Hello everybody.

Miss Hughes here.

What's your name? I've come on a relaxing day out to the beach.

It's so beautiful here.

I've got my hat and sunglasses on to protect me from the sun.

I'm drinking a nice cold glass of squash.

And if I listen carefully, I can hear the tide and the palm trees swaying gently in the breeze.

Will you join me? Great.

I'm going to take my sunglasses off so I can see you.

On this lesson its all about naming things we might see at the beach.

There are three lessons on the beach.

The first with me, the second with Miss Sidenius and this third with Mrs. Garrard.

In this lesson, we will listen to a story.

Learn about things we might see at the beach and then you're going to imagine having a beach day of your own.

You may able to get some props for your beach day.

Like a towel to lie on, a cold drink or an ice lolly a book to read or something relaxing to do, paper and a pencil to design a sandcastle and sunglasses and a hat.

Pause the video here while you get ready for your beach day and restart when you're ready.

Fantastic have you got your hat and sunglasses on? Great.

We're ready to go.

I will start by listening to a story called Sally and the Limpet.

Sally and the Limpet is by Simon James, with thanks to Walker Books for granting us permission to use this book.

So I'm just going to step off the beach to read you the story.

While you are listening to the story, I want you to try and identify as many things that Sally sees on the beach as you can.

Sally and the Limpet.

Not long ago on a Sunday, Sally was down on the beach exploring when she found a brightly coloured, bigger than usual limpet shell.

She wanted to take it home, but as she pulled the Limpet made a little squashy noise and held on to the rock.

The harder Sally tugged, the more tightly the limpets held on until suddenly Sally slipped and fell with the limpet now stuck on her finger.

So she pulled with all her might it just wouldn't come off.

So she ran over to her dad.

He heaved and groaned, but the limpet made a little squashing noise and held on even tighter.

So that afternoon Sally went home in the car with the limpet stuck to her finger.

When they got home, her dad tried using his tools.

Her brother tried offering it lettuce and cucumber but that night Sally went to bed with the limpet stuck to her finger.

Next day it was school.

All her friends tried to pull the limpet off Sally's finger.

Mr. Blueberry the nature teacher said that limpets live for 20 years and stay all their whole lives on the same rock.

In the afternoon, Sally's mother took her to the hospital to see a doctor.

He tried chemicals, injections, potions and pinches.

Sally was beginning to feel upset.

Everyone was making too much fuss all around her.

She kicked over the doctor's chair and ran.

She ran through the endless corridors.

She just wanted to be on her own.

She ran out to the hospital and through the town.

She didn't stop when she got to the beach.

What can you see in the picture? She ran through people's sandcastles.

She even ran over a big man.

When she reached the water she jumped in with all her clothes on.

Sally landed with a big splash and then just quietly in the water the limpet feeding on her once more, made the little squelching noise and wiggled off her finger.

But Sally didn't forget what Mr Blueberry the nature teacher had said.

Very carefully, she lifted the limpet by the top of its shell.

She carried it back across the beach, past the man she had walked over and gently, so gently put the limpet back on the very same rock where she had found it the day before.

Then humming to herself she took the long way home across the beach.

The end.

So in that story, a little limpet which is a little animal that lives in a shell got stuck to Sally's finger.

Now limpets along with other small animals are found in rock pools.

Little pools of water, that gather between the rocks at the beach.

What other signs of the beach did you spot in the story? Let's take a look.

We can see that the beach is covered in sand.

It also has the sea, a large body of water.

I can see little plants and little animals all over the rocks.

The beach is a really interesting place.

So let's think of some of the things Sally might have seen at the beach.

Have you been to the beach? Maybe you have or maybe you haven't.

Using the picture, tell your screen some of the things that Sally might have seen at the beach.

You had lots of suggestions.

Sally might have seen some sand.

Sand is what makes up a lot of beaches.

Tiny grains of rocks that have eroded over thousands of years to form sand.

Sally would have seen the sea.

The large body of water connected to the main land.

If you've ever swallowed sea water by accident, you will know that it tastes quite salty and disgusting.

Maybe, Sally saw some seagulls.

Seagulls are large birds that like to live near the sea.

Be careful if you go to the beach and eat chips because seagulls like to swoop down and eat them.

And we know Sally saw some rock pools.

Some holes in the rocks where little pools of water gather and some creatures are left in.

And we know that Sally saw a shell.

Shells are the homes for tiny little animals that live in the sea.

Can you remember the little animals that lived in the shell that got stuck to Sally's finger? That's right.

It was a limpet.

So there are lots of things at the beach.

Let's think a little more closely about sand.

How did sand get to the beach? Well, thousands of years ago, the sand used to be part of big rocks and slowly overtime those rocks have got smaller and smaller until they were pebbles.

And years years later, they have become fine grains of sand.

Sand is really fun when we visit the beach, it feels funny between our toes and we can use it to build sandcastles.

Also at the beach is the sea.

The sea is the large body of water.

Can you point to the sea in the picture? And the sea is made of salt water, it's made of? salt water.

It tastes really salty and disgusting if you accidentally swallow it.

And the sea washes up onto the shore of the beach, moving with the tide.

The tide goes in and out of the beach every day covering the sand as it goes.

Also at the beach, just like in Sally and the Limpet, there are some times rock pools.

Little pools that gather in between the holes in the rocks.

And you may have gone fishing in the rock pools to see what creatures you could find.

Here are some of the creatures that gather in rock pools.

What creatures can you think of? That's right sometimes if we look carefully, we see crabs in the rock pools.

And sometimes we see little animals that live in shells like Sally's limpet and other animals too.

Also, animals like shrimps like to gather in rock pools because there are loads of plants and places for them to hide.

If you ever go fishing in a rock pool, you must be really careful not to harm the animals and to always put them back before you leave the beach.

So, there lots of different things that we may find at the beach pause the video here and tell the screen some of them.

What did you remember? Call them out with me.

Sand, sea, seagulls, rock pools, and shells and maybe you thought of some other things too.

Now that we know what we might find at the beach, we're going to get ready for our beach day.

So you should already have your hat and your sunglasses on.

And let's begin by thinking about some of the things we might like to do on our beach day.

Here are some pictures of things that people do at the beach.

What would you like to do if you visited a beach? Maybe you'd like to swim or paddle in the sea.

Remember the sea is really big so you should always be supervised by an adult if you go in the sea.

You may like to relax, maybe read a book or lie down and have a nap.

You may like to build sandcastles or even a whole sand village.

Or you may like to take some food to the beach and have a picnic but be careful not to get sand in your sandwiches or they'll taste a little crunchy.

So if there's anything you'd like to get, pause the video here and restart when you're ready.

Great.

Now the first thing we need to do is set up for our beach day.

So roll your towel out on the floor, make sure you have your hats and sunglasses on and stay cool.

Toffee is so ready for his day out to the beach.

He's wearing his hat and sunglasses.

He's put his sun cream on to stop him from getting burned.

And he's got a cold bottle of water next to him so that he can stay hydrated.

I wonder what your set up is going to look like.

Pause here and get ready.

Great.

Your beach day is looking amazing.

Now that we're set up, it's time to build a sandcastle.

Sandcastles are castles made entirely of sand.

You might have built a sand castle before.

Using your bucket and spade, Not got any sand in your home? That's okay.

Because we're just going to design our sandcastles on some paper.

I wonder what yours is going to look like.

Is it going to be in the shape of a castle? Maybe it will be round and maybe you will decorate it with some shells.

Tell your screen what your sandcastle is going to look like.

My sand castle will have.

Wow your sandcastles sound fantastic.

Here is a picture of my sandcastle that I've designed.

I've done a tall turret at the top with two turrets either side of it.

I've put a flag in red and green, which are the colours of Wales the country where I'm from.

I put some shelves on top of the door to decorate it and some really pretty grey pebbles along the sides.

I wonder what your sandcastle looks like.

Pause the video here, and design your sandcastle.

Labelling it if you feel confident with writing.

Great work everybody your sandcastles are looking very impressive.

I think we have a whole sand village between us.

Now, it was thirsty work building our sandcastles.

So make sure to have a nice cold drink and find a way to relax.

Think about how you like relaxing.

Do you like drawing? Do you like reading? Or do you like listening to music? Now is your time to pick your activity and spend some time relaxing on the beach.

Pause the video here, and choose your way to relax.

Wow we've had a very busy time on the beach.

I've really enjoyed seeing the different ways that you like to spend your time on the beach.

I can see the sun is starting to go in now.

So it's time to go home.

But if you'd like to please ask your parents or carer to share your work on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, tagging Oak National and hashtag learn with Oak.

I hope you've enjoyed your beach day as much as me.

Have a lovely time at home.

And make sure to wash all of the sand off you when you get in.

Bye.
