Hi, my name's Mrs. Harris.

Thank you for joining me to do some maths.

We're going to do some sorting together.

Here's our lesson agenda.

Agenda means the things we're going to do.

Now, we're going to start with you doing some sorting with me, then because I can't do everything.

You need to do some sorting, and then I'd love you finally, to come back and show me your sorting.

Don't worry if you can't remember all that, we'll work through it together.

So we know what we're going to do.

Let's find out what we're going to need.

So you're going to need the printed worksheet.

I've done your worksheet with lots of nice vehicles on and the other one has a big circle on.

The other thing you'll need, with your parent or carer's permission, is a pair of scissors.

Now they could help you with the cutting out.

But don't worry, I'll show you how to cut out too.

I'd like you to pause the video now and make sure that you have your worksheets, and a pair of scissors.

If you're allowed them.

Come back to me when you've got the things you need.

Okay.

So we're about to start our sorting and we're going to be sorting the pictures to make a set.

And I'll tell you a bit more about that in a minute.

First though, I thought it might be useful for me to show you how to use a pair of scissors.

Now, if your parent or carer said you could use them, remember, you put your thumb in the top hole, And your pointer finger, this one, in the bottom hole.

Just like I have.

Like that.

And then you point the scissors away from you.

And look, we can open and close them.

They cut when we do the close.

Now to cut out all my pictures, it's going to take me a little while.

And what I'm going to do, is I'm actually going to keep my scissors in just one place.

I'm going to move the paper, open, close, open, close.

And my scissors are staying the same.

I'm just moving the paper and I'm opening and closing the scissors.

Started to cut out this lovely, big red lorry at the top.

And now I need to go the other way.

So instead of me trying to move my scissors, I'm going to keep my scissors still, I'm going to stay like that, so you can see them.

I'm going to change my paper.

Scissors is still still.

Just open and closing, open and closing.

And look, I'm moving my paper.

And I've got my first vehicle.

I'd like you to spend a little bit of time, cutting them all out.

Now, remember, a grownup, your parent or carer can help you as well.

Be resilient.

Try not to give up.

When you've got all of them cut out, come back to me because we're going to need them.

I've cut out all of my vehicles and here they are, all ready around my circle.

I'm going to use my circle to make a set.

But before I do that, I just want you to look at them.

What do you notice about my vehicles? Are there some, that are red? Some that are blue? Are there any that are my favourite colour, pink? No.

Are there any motorbikes? Cars? Lorries? Just have a little think and see what you can notice.

Okay.

So this is how we're going to do some sorting.

Intersects.

Now I've got all my bits cut out here, or my vehicles.

If I lift my piece of paper up to show you, they all fall off.

I'm not using glue today.

It wasn't one of the things I said you need.

And the reason I'm not using glue, is because I might want to move my vehicles around.

So, the first set I'm going to make, well, I might make a set of things that have the same colour as each other, or I might make a set of things that are the same type of vehicle as each other.

I think the first set I'm going to make is, a set of cars.

So I'm going to move my cars into my circle and I'm going to leave all the others round the edge, but just so I can show you, I'm going to move them off the paper and I'm going to stretch my fingers to show you.

I have a set of cars and a set of not cars.

Now there's lots of other ways of sorting.

That's your job.

I told you, I wasn't going to do all the sorting today.

And in a minute, I would like you to pause the video and find all the different ways that you can use the vehicles that you've cut out to make a set.

Remember, in your set, everything is going to have something in common with all the other ones in a set.

Maybe it's the colour.

Maybe it's the type of vehicle.

So pause the video now and go and do that.

Brilliant.

You're back.

I thought I'd show you some of the ways I found to sort, maybe you found some the same.

So the first set I made, was a set of red vehicles and everything around the edge of my sorting circle, are not red vehicles.

But that wasn't the only way I found.

Quite enjoyed making a set using colour.

So I did it again.

I have a set of blue vehicles and the others are not blue.

That's why they're not in my circle.

How have I sorted a set here? I did it by colour again, didn't I? I have sorted the vehicles by colour.

My set are all yellow and around the edge, they are not yellow.

But I still wasn't done with my sorting.

That's why I didn't want you to use glue, isn't it? This time I decided to sort by type of vehicle.

And here, I have all my motorbikes.

Next, I chose to sort by cars.

I have a set of cars, around the edge, not cars.

I still wasn't finished with my sorting there.

I found so many ways to sort.

Did you? This is my final way though.

I have sorted, except of lorries, maybe trucks, we could call them trucks or lorries.

I have a set of trucks.

Around the edge, not in my set, are not lorries.

Well done if you got any sets the same as mine.

Don't worry if you didn't, because you can still make some more because we didn't stick the vehicles down, did we? So you can keep playing with them and making your own sets.

Just remember when you've made a set, to say, I have sorted the vehicles by colour, or by type, maybe you even thought of a different way.

As long as you explain how you've sorted it, it's fine.

We just need to know what you were thinking.

We've reached the end of our "sorting into sets" lesson.

Well done for sticking with me and for finding so many ways of making sets with the vehicles.

Maybe you'd like to share your work with me or with the whole world.

If you would, you could ask your parent or carer to take a quick photo of some of your sorting and they could put it on Twitter, tagging @OakNational.

Bye.
