So in our lesson today, we're going to be looking at the star words, so we're going to look at the key vocabulary.

Then we're going to recap last week's, in our last previous lesson's knowledge, which was all about the five pillars of Islam.

I hope you remember all five of them, then we're going to talk about the Qur'an.

We're going to talk about The Hadith.

And then there's going to be our end of lesson quiz.

So things that you're going to need today are, you're going to need your exercise book or paper.

We're going to do a little bit of writing today.

You're going to need a pencil or a pen.

And most importantly, your humongous brain.

So if you want to pause the video now go get those things, you can do that now.

Okay, let's have a look at the stars words for today.

So the star words today are Islam.

So remember Islam is a monotheistic religion, which believes in one God and Mohammed as the last prophet.

And now religion, if you remember, is a set of beliefs about how the universe was made and what its purpose is, and religion usually involves the worship of one God or more than one God.

And the belief that in certain ideas about what is right and about what is wrong.

Now, Holy my turn then your turn.

Holy, Holy, good job.

Holy is that something is sacred according to a particular religion.

But if something is sacred to a particular religion that is deemed to be holy.

In the Qur'an, we're going to talk about the Surah and the Surah is the name for the chapters of the Qur'an.

So the chapters of the Qur'an are called Surahs.

The Qur'an is also divided in sections, and these sections are known as the Juz.

So the Qur'an is divided into Surahs, chapters, and sections called the Juz.

And a person who memorises the Qur'an is called a Hafiz.

So Hafiz is someone who memorises the entire Quran.

And the last word, in the middle, at the bottom, is the Hadith and the Hadith is a book containing the teaching and actions of the Prophet Muhammad.

That's different from the Qur'an.

And later in the lesson, we'll see how it's different.

So let's have a look at the five pillars of Islam.

So let's recap our previous lesson's knowledge.

So I hope you can, I hope you can remember the five pillars of Islam.

So if you said, Shahadah, good job.

Remember that Shahadah is declaring faith in Allah, with Muhammad as his messenger.

If you said Salat awesome job, remember that the Salat is obligatory prayer, so praying five times every single day.

If you said Zakat, awesome job.

Remember Zakat is giving money to charity, giving money to the poor and the most needy.

And remember that in some Muslim majority countries like Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and Yemen and Pakistan, Zakat is obligatory, so 2.

5% of your income will be given, will be taken by the government in the form of Zakat.

Then we got Sawm which is fasting in the month of Ramadan and making sure that you don't drink or eat during daylight hours.

Remember that there are exceptions to people who are allowed to fast, but if you are pregnant, if you are elderly, if you're sick, if you're very young, then you don't have to fast.

But if you are healthy and able, then you're encouraged to fast.

And then the last one is the Hajj, which is making a pilgrimage to Mecca.

Remember that a pilgrimage is a visit to a Holy place.

And Mecca is the holiest place in Islam because it contains the Kabah, which is the house of God, and that is located in the middle of Masjid al-Haram, which is the sacred mosque.

Now the first activity is, is we are going to match the pillar of Islam, which is on the left hand side to the definition, which is on the right hand side.

If you're working from a book, then you can draw the, you can draw on the left hand side, you can using a ruler, you can draw the left, you can draw a table.

You can draw, you can write down all the five pillars.

And then on the right hand side, you can write the definitions.

And all you're got to do is you're going to match them up.

The way that I would do it is I would read the first pillar.

So it's Zakat and I would think, okay, what does a Zakat mean? Does it mean this? Does it mean prayer five times a day? Once you think you've got the definition, then match it with a ruler.

So at this point, if you want to pause the video to do that, you can do that now.

Okay, let's have a look at the answers, ready? So let's have a look, how many out of five did you get? I think you got all five out of five.

So, Sakat means giving money to charity.

Hajj means making a pilgrimage to Mecca.

Shahadah means the separation of faith, remember the belief in one God and Muhammad as his last messenger.

And then Sawm is fasting during Ramadan.

And then we've got Salat, which is praying five times.

So let's learn a little bit about the Qur'an.

Now, every religion, almost every religion has a sacred text and a sacred text is a book or a collection of writings that are inspired or said to be inspired by God or gods, or they reveal great spiritual truth.

And often sacred texts give really specific rules about how humans should live and how they should worship.

And Sacred texts can often be written by one person or by a group of people.

So some examples of sacred texts are, the Bible in Christianity.

The Christian Bible is divided into old Testament and the new Testament.

In Sikhism, we have the Guru Granth Sahib and the Guru Granth Sahib was compiled by the 5th Sahib Guru, around 400 years ago in India.

The Tripitaka, which is considered to be a record of the words of the Buddha.

And as we know the Qur'an, which is the Muslim Holy book.

But why is the Qur'an the Muslim Holy book? So, the Qur'an is the Holy book for Muslims and as we know it was written in Arabic, it was written in Arabic, because that was the language that Mohammed spoke when the angel Gabriel revealed himself in 609 CE.

And remember that Muslims believe that the Qur'an is the direct word from God passed on by the angel Gabriel to Mohammed.

And so the first revelation was in 609 CE, it took 23 years for the Qur'an to be fully revealed.

And the word, Qur'an, actually means to recite and the reason why is called the Qur'an is because if you remember, that Muhammad was illiterate, that means he couldn't read or write.

And as a result, the angel Gabriel made Muhammad recite the words of God many times over until Muhammad memorised them.

And then after his death, his followers who also memorised the Qur'an, they started to write the Qur'an down.

Now Muslims also believed that the Qur'an, corrects previous human errors, which were made in previous sacred texts, such as the Torah or the New Testament.

So they believe that the Qur'an is the final word of God.

Now let's have a look at our next task, it's a true or false task.

So Muslims believe that the Qur'an is the literal, I mean, meaning the direct word of God.

Is that true? Or is that false? So what do you guys think? Okay, pause the video and have a go.

Okay, let's have a look and see what the answer is.

So, Muslims believe that the Qur'an is the literal direct word of God, is that true or is that false? That is true.

Remember that Muslims believe that the Qur'an, which was revealed by the angel Gabriel to Mohammad is the literal words of God, as if they were spoken by God himself.

Now let's look at that Qur'an.

So we know that the Qur'an, Muslims believe as the direct God, words of God and the Qur'an is made up of 114 chapters.

And these chapters are referred to as the Surahs and the Qur'an is also divided into 30 sections and these sections are called a Juz.

Now, the Qur'an has a message.

And the main message of the Qur'an is that Allah is the only God that Muhammad is his last messenger and that also that God created the world and that humans should live their lives according to what he has taught.

The Qur'an also teaches that humans will be resurrected after death.

That they'll be brought back to life and they will be judged for their actions on Earth and whether they're going to go to heaven or hell, depending on those actions.

Now the Qur'an also teaches that God is really forgiving And he is especially forgiving to those people who seek forgiveness through prayers and good deeds, and here I have a quote from the Qur'an and it says, "And Allah would not punish them "while they seek forgiveness." And what this quote tells you about God is that he is merciful and if someone does something wrong, but they seek forgiveness, through prayer and good deeds, he will forgive them.

So now it's your turn to have a think about what a quote from the Qur'an means.

So here I have a quote.

I'm going to read it to you and then what I want you to do is I want you to write down what you think it means.

And so the quote is, "and seek help through patience and prayer "and indeed it is difficult except "for the humbly submissive to Allah." Now submissive means being very obedient.

You being very obedient, you are submissive.

So what do you think that quote might mean? So in this previous quote, before that, this quote means that God is forgiving if people seek forgiveness.

What do you think this quote might mean? Okay, a sentence starter you could use, you could say, I think this phrase means, and then you're going to have a go.

So again, if you want to pause the video and have a go, do so now.

Okay, I would be really interested to know what you guys thought about.

So let's have a look and see what I thought.

I'd love for you to share them, what you thought it meant.

So remember, submissive means being very obedient, so the quote was, "and seek help through patience and prayer "and indeed it is difficult "except for the humbly submissive to Allah." So I think what this phrase means is that when you're facing a real difficult situation, you have to remain patient and you have to seek guidance with prayer.

So God is saying that your problems are not going to be solved straight away.

That's where you got to be patient.

And the way that you seek guidance is through prayers, and you seek his help by praying to him.

I think it also means the latter part in the case, that life is probably easier for people who are the most obedient to God.

So when he says it is difficult, except for the humbly submissive to Allah, it means that life is quite difficult, except for those people who obey his commands the most.

So that's why he says, it's difficult except for the humbly submissive.

So the more that you by God's rules and what he has told you to do, the easier life is going to be.

Now, let's have a look at another book that Muslims also use to learn about the faith and also how to live their life.

So, as well as the Qur'an, Muslims also study a book called the Hadith.

My turn then your turn.

Hadith.

Hadith.

Good job.

And this book, the Hadith, contains the teachings and the actions of the prophet Muhammad.

So unlike the Qur'an though, the Hadith is not the literal word of God, but it's still an important book which Muslims use to help them understand the Qur'an and how they should act.

So the Hadith is a collection of words, the collection of the actions and words of the prophet Muhammad as written by his followers.

Now, an example of a Hadith is where Mohammed once saw a man, and this man was really thirsty, remember in Saudi Arabia, it's a really hot country.

And this man was really thirsty, but this man saw a dog that was also really thirsty.

And so this man took off his shoe, he filled it with water.

And instead of drinking that water himself, he gave it to the dog.

And so Mohammed was really pleased by that.

And Mohammed said, "God has forgiven your sins "because you have been kind to this dog." And so, the Hadith, again is a collection of words and actions from prophet Muhammad.

And so here I have your next task.

So what do you think that Hadith, about the thirsty dog teaches Muslims, about how they should treat animals? So this could be your sentence starter you could say, I think this Hadith teaches that Muslims should and then I want you to have a go.

So again, if you want to write this down, you can pause the video and then have a go.

Okay, let me see what I thought.

Okay, let's have a look.

Now, as we know, the Qur'an is the most important book in Islam and so Muslims treat it with the utmost respect and Muslims show respect for the Qur'an, by doing a couple of things.

The first one that they do is before they touch the Qur'an, they always wash their hands.

And when the Qur'an is not being used.

Also Muslims believe that the Qur'an should never be placed on the floor, under any circumstances.

And as a result, when it's not being used, they tend to place it in a high place on a high shelf for giving it prominence.

Remember the Qur'an is the holiest book in Islam, they think it's the most important thing, so they think that they should place it somewhere where it can be revered and shown respect.

And when it's not being used, it tends to be covered in a cloth.

But under no circumstances do they ever place it on the floor.

Now when they read it, they tend to place it on a special stand called a Rehal.

So my turn then your turn, Rehal.

Rehal, good job.

This book rest tends to be made out of wood and it's foldable and when you fold it out, tends to make an X shape.

And they use this book rest to place the Qur'an and they read from it.

And this book rest is also quite common.

It's commonly used in other religions, such as Hinduism and Sikhism.

Now many Muslims, they respect the Qur'an so much that they try to learn off by heart.

So they try to memorise the entire Qur'an.

And there's a special name for somebody who is able to do this and that name is the Hafiz.

We're going to talk about that later.

Let's have a look at your next activity.

So in the text we have a sentence, but the sentence is missing some key words.

So have a look at the sentence when it says, when it does a blank, I'm just going to say, mm.

So, it says Muslim show the respect for the Qur'an by, mm, their hands.

It's believed that the Qur'an should, mm, touch the floor and is therefore placed high on a shelf, covered by a special, mm.

When being read, it is placed on a special x-shaped wooden stand called a, mm.

So guys what I want you to do now is I want you to have a look at those four words.

So you've got never, washing, cloth and Rehal, think about where they're going to fit in those sentences, in those paragraphs.

Have a go, write it down in your book or your piece of paper.

Once you think you've got it, read it back and see if it makes sense.

That's the way that you're going to check, read it back, does it make sense? If it does, then we're going to mark it together at the end.

But at this point, pause the vide and then have a go.

Okay, let's have a look and see how you did, ready? So, it should be, Muslims show their respect for the Qur'an by washing their hands, that's number one.

It's sometimes also known as a Qur'an stand, but most commonly known as a Rehal.

Now, we said before that many Muslims love to learn the Qur'an off by heart and that's a special name for that somebody, that person, and that is a Hafiz.

So what is a Hafiz? A Hafiz, the person who memorises the entire Qur'an off by heart.

An ambition in many Muslims is to do that.

So many Muslims believe that to learn the Qur'an off by heart is one of the most noblest things that they could do.

And they are seen, Hafiz are seen as important because they are seen as being the guardians of the Muslim community because they are memorising the words of God, which they can pass down onto the next generations.

And those who want to become a Hafiz, they tend to have to start doing so from a very young age.

So they start to read and memorise from very, very young.

And they often do this by attending special study sessions at the local Mosque.

Now being a Hafiz is a very, it's highly valued in the Muslim community because it's seen as being that the words of God, of Allah, are present in their minds at all times.

So, what does it mean? So, an individual who learns that the entire Qur'an is called a Hafiz.

But do you remember what term Hafiz means? Got to tick one of these options.

So does Hafiz mean quick learner? So does Hafiz mean guardian? Does Hafiz mean intelligent? Does it mean warrior? Does it mean wealthy? Or does it mean strong? What does Hafiz mean? Quick learner, guardian, intelligent, warrior, wealthy or strong? Have a go.

Okay, let's have a look.

So what does Hafiz mean? So an individual who learns then Qur'an is called a Hafiz.

What does Hafiz mean? It means, please tell me you said wealthy.

No, I'm only joking.

It means guardian, they're the guardian.

So remember that the person who memorised the entire Qur'an is seen as a guardian of their community by preserving their religion and being able to pass it down to the next generations.

Excellent job guys, well done.

Now last section.

So here we're going to talk about the 99 names for God.

So Muslims believe that God is the greatest being and he cannot be rivalled by any, any human.

And so they believe that God has no rival.

He hasn't, there's no comparison to be made between any human, however great they are, to God.

God is just the greatest person, is the greatest being.

So there's no other being or object that can have the qualities of God.

And as a result, they showed this by referring to him in 99 different ways.

So through his 99 names.

And his 99 names actually refer to his qualities as a being.

And because no other person or object can have these qualities, this is something called transcendence.

So my turn then your turn, transcendence.

So transcendence is the belief that there is no other being or object that can have a quality as great as God.

So some examples of transcendence of the 99 names of God.

So all of those are the 99 names of God in Arabic.

And so some famous examples are, I'm going to give you the Arabic and then the English.

So, Al Hakim, meaning the wise.

So God as being the wise.

Ar-Rahmaan, which is the Beneficent, and beneficent refers to performing acts of kindness and charity.

That means God is kind and charitable.

Then you've got Ar-Raheem, which is merciful.

So God as being merciful.

And Al-Quddus, which is the most sacred.

So God is the most sacred.

And again, all of the 99 names for God, are listing his qualities as a being, as the greatest being.

And that's how Muslims show respect for him.

Now, true or false.

So, easiest question, the Qur'an contains a hundred different names for God.
