Hello everyone, it's Miss Doherty here.

We're going to be creating a persuasive piece.

Are you ready, Asheen? Yes.

In this lesson, you will need: an exercise book or paper, a pencil, and of course, your brain.

You can pause the video now while you go and get those items. We're going to start today with some singing.

And there we'll create our very own persuasive piece.

Let's sing our persuasive song.

♪ We started off this unit by learning the persuasive piece, won't you buy my gingerbread.

And then we rewrote, we recycled that persuasive piece, and we changed it.

And my persuasive piece was trying to convince someone to buy my banana bread.

Now today you don't need to worry if you weren't in any of our earlier lessons, because we're going to be creating a brand new persuasive piece.

Oh, Asheen doesn't know how to persuade.

What are some of the persuasive techniques we have spoken about in our earlier lessons? Don't worry, if like Asheen, you weren't in our earlier lessons.

I can tell you.

Well, Asheen, to persuade someone we need to tell them what we're trying to persuade them.

We need to tell them what we want them to do.

We will tell them lots of facts, but we might exaggerate, we might be a little bit silly as well.

We might also ask them questions.

And we will try to use lots of emotive language, we'll talk about how amazing things are, or how terrible things are.

Do you understand how we can persuade somebody? Brilliant.

When we persuade, we might choose to persuade somebody for lots of different reasons.

We've already spoken about using persuasion to get someone to buy something.

But there are lots of other reasons why we might want to persuade someone.

Can you have a think of when you might have tried to persuade someone.

Maybe your adults at home to do something.

Asheen has tried to persuade me to let him stay up late.

That's a really good example.

What else have you tried to persuade me, Asheen? Mmm.

Oh, yes.

Asheen has also tried to persuade me to let him eat cake for breakfast.

What shall we create our persuasive piece about? Staying up late or eating cake for breakfast.

Have a think.

You might choose to create a persuasive piece about something completely different.

But Asheen, what shall we create ours about? Cake for breakfast? Staying up late? Cake for breakfast? Staying up late? Which one? Cake for breakfast.

Let's do it.

We need to start by introducing our argument.

Now our argument is that Asheen should be able to have cake for breakfast.

What's a really persuasive sentence start yourself off with? We need to say, I should be able to have cake for breakfast, because it will.

Because it will start my day happily.

Does cake make you happy, Asheen? I should be able to have cake for breakfast, because it will start my day happily.

And you may think that cake is unhealthy, but you would be wrong.

There are some healthy breakfast cakes, and those are what I should be able to eat.

What, why not? Asheen says it really is chocolate cake he's after for breakfast.

So we can't use that as our argument, because it's not going to help Asheen persuade me to let him have chocolate cake.

We can keep that first section, though.

I want to have cake for breakfast, because it will start my day happily.

Many adults like yourself love cake.

Well if you love cake, why not try it for breakfast? That was a really good line, Asheen.

Now let's start to describe what would happen if we had cake for breakfast.

Imagine waking up in the morning.

Coming downstairs, and knowing that you were going to start your day with a delicious, moist, sticky, sweet, gooey slice of chocolate cake.

You would feel so happy, in fact, you would feel the happiest that you have ever felt on a morning.

We started to exaggerate a little bit there, didn't we? Yes we did.

Now we can think about the purpose.

Why should you have cake for breakfast? We've spoken about making us happy.

Is there anything else? Mmm.

Cake is a treat.

Well why not start your day with a treat so that you know the whole day is going to be a special day.

And then we can conclude by saying, I hope now you've listened to my argument, and understand that I really should be allowed to have cake for breakfast.

Can you pause the video, and have a think about some sentences, some persuasive sentences, as to why Asheen should be able to have cake for breakfast.

Pause the video now, and just have a little think.

What reasons did you come up with? There are so many reasons.

What I would like us to do now is write down one of those reasons.

When we're writing, we say the word.

Can you write your own persuasive sentence? Think about what you want to persuade your adult to let you do, or to stop doing, or to do with you.

Maybe like Asheen, you want cake for breakfast.

Or perhaps it's something else.

Have a go at writing that in a sentence.

Remember when we're writing, we say the word, robot the word, and write the word.

I would love you to have a go at persuading your adults at home with an argument of your own.

It might be that you should be allowed to have cake for breakfast.

But I don't think they're going to let you.

Because actually cake is not very good for you, Asheen for breakfast.

It's really not a good breakfast food.

What else could you create as a persuasive argument? Mmm, I wonder.

There are so many.

Maybe it could be could be to eat your favourite dinner tonight.

Or perhaps it could be to go on your favourite walk.

And you can persuade them, tell them exactly why you should be able to do that.

You might exaggerate just a little bit, and they might find that quite funny.

I'd love to see lots of you trying out your new persuasive skills that you've learned, on your adults.
