Hi everybody.

My name is Mr. Palekar and welcome back to our music lessons.

Now in today's lesson, we are going to recap "Lil' Liza Jane," we are going to explore some music which has three beats in a bar, we're going to clap to the pulse of the music which has three beats in a bar, and we're going to learn a brand new piece which has three beats in a bar.

Now for this lesson, you will need some headphones if you have some.

If you don't, don't panic, just make sure you are somewhere where you can concentrate and where you won't be distracted.

You'll need a pencil and paper if you would like to take any notes, and you would need some of these, your hands, your bodies and your voices as well.

Let's get started with "Lil' Liza Jane." Let's see if we can remember how it looks and how it sounds.

Have a listen first.

I've got a house in Baltimore, Lil' Liza Jane Streetcar runs right by my door, Lil' Liza Jane Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane My turn, and then your turn.

My turn first.

I've got a house in Baltimore Ready? Your turn, off you go.

I've got a house in Baltimore My turn, here I go.

I've got a house in Baltimore Lil' Liza Jane Try it.

Ready? Off we go.

I've got a house in Baltimore Lil' Liza Jane Good! My turn.

Ready? Here I go.

Streetcar runs right by my door Lil' Liza Jane Try it.

Ready? Off you go.

Streetcar runs right by my door Lil' Liza Jane Good.

Let's put those two lines together.

Here we go.

A bit slower.

One, two, off we go.

I've got a house in Baltimore Lil' Liza Jane Streetcar runs right by my door Lil' Liza Jane Good.

Let's try that one more time.

One, two, one, two, off we go.

I've got a house in Baltimore Lil' Liza Jane Streetcar runs right by my door Lil' Liza Jane Good.

The next part goes, Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane Let's try that.

Ready? My turn, and then your turn.

Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane Try it.

Ready? Off you go.

Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane Good, my turn.

The last line, it goes like this.

Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane Try it, and ready, and off you go.

Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane Good.

Let's put these two last lines together.

Oh, Eliza one, two, three, and Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane Good, let's see if we can sing it all the way through.

Here we go.

One, two, one, two, off we go.

I've got a house in Baltimore Lil' Liza Jane Streetcar runs right past my door Lil' Liza Jane Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane Well done.

Let's sing it one more time.

Ready? One, two, one, two, off we go.

I've got a house in Baltimore Lil' Liza Jane Streetcar runs right by my door Lil' Liza Jane Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane Good job.

Let's add our pulse to our music.

Now on the screen, you can see some bar lines.

And if you remember back to last lesson, we have two beats in every single bar.

One, two, one, two, one, two, one, two, all the way through.

We added a clap to our first beat of the bar.

Can you remember what that first beat is called? It's called our downbeat and our downbeat is our strong beat.

It's always number one.

It's going to be one , two one , two , one , two one , two , one , two Okay, let's see if we can read it all the way through and count the one and the two.

Remember that the first beat, the downbeat, it needs to be clapped a little bit harder.

Ready? One, two off we go.

One , two , one , two , one , two , one , two , one , two , one , two , one , two , one , two.

Good.

Well done if you stopped just there.

If you didn't, let's try it one more time.

Remember to look at where the claps and the clicks are.

Remember the click is that star and the clap is our hands.

Here we go.

One, two, one, two, off we go.

One , two , one , two , one , two , one , two , one , two , one , two , one , two , one , two.

Stop right there.

Well done.

Now we can get rid of all of these hearts because we know that every single bar is going to have two beats in it.

We're going to put a number two at the very beginning of our music, which tells us that every single bar is going to have two beats.

Okay, let's put our clapping and clicking of the pulse back with our song.

See if you can start clapping with me.

One , two , one , two one , two , one , two.

Now say it in your head.

Good.

I want to count us in, and let's see if we can start slow.

I've been, one, two, off we go.

I've got a house in Baltimore Lil' Liza Jane Streetcar runs right past my door Lil' Liza Jane Oh, Eliza Lil' Liza Jane Oh, Eliza Lil' Liza Jane One more time, off we go.

I've got a house in Baltimore Lil' Liza Jane Streetcar runs right by my door Lil' Liza Jane Oh, Eliza Lil' Liza Jane Oh, Eliza Lil' Liza Jane.

Very good.

Keep on going.

Clap, click, clap, click, one, two, one, two.

Clap, click, clap, click, ready, off we go.

I've got a house in Baltimore Lil' Liza Jane Streetcar runs right by my door Lil' Liza Jane Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane Oh Eliza, Lil' Liza Jane Well done.

Pause the video now so that you can practise singing "Lil' Liza Jane" all the way through.

Clap and click the pulse and remember to clap harder on the first beat, the downbeat of every bar.

If you would like to practise together with me, rewind 20 seconds and let's go through the steps one more time.

When you're ready to continue, click the play button.

Time Signatures: three beats in a bar.

So far, we've looked at a number of different time signatures.

That means a number of beats in a bar, so, let's have a look.

We've got our four beats in a bar because we've got our four heartbeats.

Our first beat is a little bit bigger because we would clap harder on that downbeat, but let's make it into three beats in a bar.

Okay so I've got my three heartbeats and I've got my bar underneath.

Okay, well, now we have four bars, four of those boxes.

And remember what they're separated by.

They are bar lines.

Bar lines.

We have our bars and we have our bar lines and each of the bars has three beats.

Let's add in our clap on the downbeat and for the weaker beats two and three, we are going to click.

So it will sound like this.

One , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three.

Try it with me.

Ready and, off we go.

One , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three.

Now don't worry if you can't click.

Clap is absolutely fine as well.

Ready.

One more time.

Remember to clap that downbeat a little bit harder and you can call out number one a little bit louder as well.

One, two, three, off we go One , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , and stop.

Well done.

Now we can get rid of those heartbeats.

Why? Because we know that every single bar has three beats.

So we're going to put the number three at the very start of our music.

Okay so we are going to clap, click, click the pulse of different pieces of music.

Make sure that you clap a little bit harder on that first, on that downbeat of every single bar.

Now every piece of music has three beats in a bar so let's see if you can find it a bit faster than I can.

Here we go.

♪Come away with me ♪ ♪ and we'll write ♪ ♪ you ♪ Okay One , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three one , two , three.

Well done if you got that quicker than I did.

Okay let's, let's go to our second piece of music.

One , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , , , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three.

Well done! Okay.

We have a bonus track now.

Let's see if you can be the one to find that pulse and to clap that downbeat faster than I can.

Here we go.

One , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three , one , two , three.
