Hi everybody, my name is Mr. Palekar and welcome back to music.

This is lesson four and in today's lesson, we are going to recap our song, Down in the Valley, which has three beats in a bar.

We are going to explore music that has six beats in a bar, and we are going to clap to the pulse of different pieces of music that has six beats in a bar.

Finally, we are going to learn a brand new piece which uses six beats in a bar.

Now for this lesson, you will need some headphones.

If you don't have any headphones, don't worry.

Just make sure that you are somewhere quiet where you can concentrate and where you can, you won't be disturbed.

You'll need a pencil and some paper, if you would like to take any notes, and you will need your hands, your bodies and your voices.

Let's start with, Down in the Valley.

So carrying on from last lesson, Down in the Valley sounds like this.

One, two, three, one, two, three, ♪ Down in the valley, Valley so low ♪ ♪ Hang you head over, Hear the wind blow ♪ ♪ Hear the wind blow dear, Hear the wind blow ♪ ♪ Hang your head over, Hear the wind blow ♪ Now this piece has three beats in every single bar.

Let's see if we can remind ourselves of how it goes.

Now we know that we are going to clap on that downbeat.

On that first beat every time, and on our beats two and three, we are going to click.

Let's read our clap, click, clicks on the screen right now.

Off we go.

Stop.

Good.

One more time.

This time, make sure that you are reading every single clap and click on the screen.

And don't forget, we need to clap a little bit harder, because that first beat is our downbeat.

Okay, let's get rid of those three heartbeats above every bar.

We know that every single bar is going to have three beats, which means we can put the number three at the beginning of our music.

Okay.

Okay.

Let's go back to our lyrics, our words.

It should sound something like this.

Time signatures, six beats in a bar.

Now we have had four beats.

We've had two beats.

We have had three beats.

We are going to be looking at six beats and above.

That's a lot of beats.

On the screen, you can see our six heartbeats, and we can often think about those six beats in two lots.

So we can have our one, two, three together, and our four, five, six together.

That means we have our clap on our down beat, our strongest beat, and we have a less strong, but still stronger than our weaker beats, on our four.

So it goes one, two, three, four, five, six.

It sounds a little bit like this.

That's adding those claps as well.

So instead of doing the downbeat on our clap we would instead, we're going to do our clap Sorry, a downbeat on our chest.

Okay? So we're going to go one, two, three Try it, and One, two, three.

Now our slightly weaker beat is going to be on our claps.

It's going to go, one, two, three, four, five, six.

Try it with me really slowly.

Here we go.

Good.

Now that sun with the letter, C in is our chest symbol.

There stars are our clicks and that clap, those hands are our clap, but you can see that behind it, there is a pink circle, and that pink circle tells us that it's still another type of stronger beat, not our first downbeat, but it indicates the, it tells us that it's the second part of that bar.

So we go one, two, three, four, five, six.

Let's try it together.

Let's read the two bars of six on the screen.

And here we go.

Now let's try again this time, but we're going to take out our clicks.

We're not going to do the clicks.

We are going to do the clicks in our heads.

I'll leave it to you to decide which one's going to be easier for you.

I'm going to to challenge you to do the one, two, three, four, five, six with the clicks in between.

But if you want to concentrate on the pat, the downbeat, and the clap on beat number four, that's also absolutely fine.

Okay.

Let's see if we can put it into practise.

So we're going to to hear some music and we need to clap to the pulse.

See if you can find the pulse quicker than I can, and you can start clap, clicking, and patting to the pulse.

Remember our pat now is our downbeat.

So one, here we go.

Maybe that was a bit too simple.

Let's see if we can make it a little bit more challenging.

Remember, you don't have to do the clicks in between, but you must count it out loud.

For our next part, we need to remember that we have six beats in a bar and there's a very important way that we've been practising to make sure that we have a strong downbeat and on our fourth beat, we clap.

We know that we don't need six heartbeats above every bar, because if there are six beats in every bar, we just need a number six at the very beginning of our music.
