- ♪ Hello, everyone ♪ Welcome back to lesson two.

My name is Miss Hart.

If you haven't done already, make sure you have completed lesson one in this unit first.

I hope you're ready to do lots of learning about syncopation.

Today, we're going to be layering different rhythms on top of each other.

So get your hands ready, your voice ready, let's go.

In lesson two, we are going to recap what syncopation means.

We are going to learn a syncopated song.

We are going to move on and off the beat.

And we're going to perform the song with a syncopated rhythm.

In this lesson, you will need your hands and brain again.

Activity one, recapping what syncopation means.

Let's have a look at the definition for syncopation.

Rhythm patterns where stressed notes are placed off the beat.

Right, let's remind ourselves of our hello warmup.

Are you ready? Straight in.

♪ Hello, hello, hello, hello ♪ ♪ Get your body moving, let's go ♪ ♪ Stamp your feet and clap your hands ♪ ♪ Turn your brain on, focus now ♪ ♪ Turn your brain on, focus now ♪ Well done.

This time, what I would like you to do is I would just like you to keep the pulse rather than the rhythm.

Okay? ♪ Hello, hello, hello, hello ♪ ♪ Get your body moving, let's go ♪ ♪ Stamp your feet and clap your hands ♪ ♪ Stamp your feet and clap your hands ♪ ♪ Turn your brain on, focus now ♪ ♪ Turn your brain on, focus now ♪ Well done.

You could make up your own hello warmup if you like.

See if you can change the words of this.

If you want to pause the video and have a go, feel free.

In the last lesson, we played ♪ Don't clap this back ♪ What kind of rhythm did we use? It was a syncopated rhythm and we went.

♪ Ti ta ti ta ♪ ♪ Or syncopa ta ♪ Okay, if you hear that rhythm, you're not allowed to clap it.

Are we ready? Let's go straight in.

♪ Syncopa at ♪ ♪ Don't clap this back ♪ Did you clap it? Let's carry on.

♪ Syncopa at ♪ ♪ Don't clap this back ♪ Last go, are we ready? ♪ Don't clap this back ♪ Well done if you managed to not clap those three times.

In lesson one, we leart a new song called "Take Time in Life," didn't we? I'm going to sing it once in this lesson just to remind you, okay? So I'm going to keep my pulse going.

I'm going to sing it first, okay? ♪ I was passing by ♪ ♪ My brother called me in ♪ ♪ And he said to me ♪ ♪ You better take time in life ♪ ♪ People take time in life ♪ ♪ People take time in life ♪ ♪ People take time in life ♪ ♪ 'Cause you got far way to go ♪ Has that reminded you how it goes? Let's see if we can have a go at these different rhythms. So the first one that we're going to have a go at is our syncopa ta.

So after four, we're going to clap syncopa ta.

Shall we have a go layering them all together now? So we'll have three rhythms, and the song, which means there are four in total.

We call this a polyrhythm.

Poly means lots.

Like a polygon has lots and lots of sides.

Polyrhythms is where we've got lots of rhythms layered on top of each other.

Right, let's have a got at layering those rhythms up now, and we'll finish with a song on the end, okay? You can choose which rhythm you clap along or you can rewind this video and do all three, okay? So we're going to start with the syncopa ta, ready? A one, two, three, four.

Let's recap.

What is syncopation? Is it rhythm patterns where stressed notes are placed off the beat? The heartbeat of the music? Making sounds using our bodies.

Or the length of sound, whether it is long or short.

Have a think.

It's a rhythm pattern where stressed notes are placed off the beat.

Well done if you got this right.

Activity two, layering syncopated rhythms. Right, we are going to layer some different rhythms now and you will be able to see notation in grids.

Every time you need to clap a note, you will see an X.

There are on-beat and off-beat.

Number one, all the notes are on the beat.

It is not syncopated.

Rhythm number two and three feature syncopation.

So let's see if we can practise those rhythms now.

This is number one.

One, two, three, four.

Join in when you've got it.

Three, four, one, two, three, four.

One, two, three, four.

One, two, three, four.

One, two, three, four.

One, two, three, four.

One, two, three, four.

Well done.

Now, number two, there are off-beat notes.

So it goes.

♪ One and two and three and four ♪ ♪ One and two and three and four ♪ ♪ One and two and three and four ♪ ♪ One and two and three and four ♪ ♪ One and two and three and four ♪ ♪ One and two and three and four ♪ ♪ One and two and three and four ♪ And the last one goes like this ♪ One and two and three and four ♪ ♪ One and two and three and four ♪ ♪ One and two and three and four ♪ ♪ One and two and three and four ♪ ♪ One and two and three and four ♪ ♪ One and two and three and four ♪ ♪ One and two and three and four ♪ ♪ One and two and three and four ♪ Well done.

If you would like to go over those again, just rewind the video.

The next part of the video, we'll be layering those rhythms on top of each other.

Right, let's have a go at layering our three rhythms now, okay? I'll add one in at a time.

I'm number one, and then two and then number three.

You choose which rhythm you would like to clap.

If you would like to do all of them, rewind this video and do a different one each time, okay? Number one, one, two, three, four, one.

Number two.

Number three.

Well done.

Remember to rewind if you'd like to try a different one.

So what is a polyrhythm? Is it rhythm patterns where stressed notes are placed off the beat? The heartbeat of the music? When two or more rhythms are performed at the same time.

Or a repeated pattern or phrase.

Have a think.

A poly rhythm is when two or more rhythms are performed at the same time.

Well done if you got this right.

Activity three, learning a syncopated song.

We're going to finish by learning a new song today called "Four White Horses." And this features lots of syncopated rhythms as well.

We'll be looking more at the rhythms in the next lesson but today, we're going to make sure we know the song.

I'm going to sing it all the way through first, and then we'll have a go at learning it together, okay? My turn.

♪ Four white horses on the river ♪ ♪ Hey, hey, hey, up tomorrow ♪ ♪ Up tomorrow is a rainy day ♪ ♪ Come on and join our shadow play ♪ ♪ Shadow play is a ripe banana ♪ ♪ Hey, hey, hey, up tomorrow ♪ ♪ Up tomorrow is a rainy day ♪ it's quite a fun one this one, isn't it? Shall we see if we can put two lots together this time? Remember, when my arms go out, it's your turn to repeat okay? My turn.

My pulse.

♪ Four white horses on the river ♪ ♪ Hey, hey, hey, up tomorrow ♪ ♪ Four white horses on the river ♪ ♪ Hey, hey, hey, up tomorrow ♪ ♪ Up tomorrow is a rainy day ♪ ♪ Come on and join our shadow play ♪ ♪ Up tomorrow is a rainy day ♪ ♪ Come on and join our shadow play ♪ ♪ Shadow play is a ripe banana ♪ ♪ Hey, hey, hey, up tomorrow ♪ ♪ Shadow play is a ripe banana ♪ ♪ Hey, hey, hey, up tomorrow ♪ ♪ Up tomorrow is a rainy day ♪ ♪ Up tomorrow is a rainy day ♪ Well done.

Shall we go a little bit quicker? Okay.

This time I'm going to click in two, okay? Because we're going to go a lot faster, instead of going all the way through, okay? So it's going to go like this.

♪ Four white horses on the river ♪ Okay, are we ready? ♪ Off we go ♪ ♪ Four white horses on the river ♪ ♪ Hey, hey, hey, up tomorrow ♪ ♪ Up tomorrow is a rainy day ♪ ♪ Come on and join our shadow play ♪ ♪ Shadow play is a ripe banana ♪ ♪ Hey, hey, hey, up tomorrow ♪ ♪ Up tomorrow is a rainy day ♪ Well done if you managed to get all the way to the end and get all the words right as well.
