Hi, everybody, my name is Mr Palekar and welcome back to music.

Now, today, in our lesson about rhythm, we're going to be developing your rhythmic reading.

We are going to recap our chant from last week, called Diddle Diddle Dumpling.

We are going to explore a new note and we are going to develop your rhythm reading as well.

We are also going to learn a new piece of music and clap along to the rhythm as well.

Now, for this lesson, you will need some headphones, if you have some, if you don't, don't worry, just make sure that you are somewhere quiet where you won't get disturbed and where you can listen to this video.

You'll need a pencil and paper, if you would like to take any notes, you will need your hands and your bodies, so that we can tap the pulse and the rhythm.

And finally, you'll need a plastic cup or beaker, just like this one.

Please make sure it's not made of glass because we don't want it to break and also if you're not sure, make sure you ask a parent or carer, just to be sure.

Let's get started.

Diddle Diddle Dumpling.

Diddle Diddle Dumpling from our lesson last time, it sounds like this.

Diddle diddle dumpling, my son John, went to bed with trousers on, one shoe off and one shoe on, diddle diddle dumpling, my son John.

My turn first and then your turn.

My turn, ready, here I go.

Diddle diddle dumpling, my son John, diddle diddle dumpling, my son John, went to bed with trousers on, went to bed with trousers on, one shoe off and one shoe on, one shoe off and one shoe on, diddle diddle dumpling, my son John, diddle diddle dumpling, my son John.

Well remembered, all the way through from the top, ready and off we go.

Diddle diddle dumpling, my son John, went to bed with trousers on, one shoe off and one shoe on, diddle diddle dumpling, my son John.

You can see that I am patting the pulse, one, two, three, four.

Can you pat the pulse on your chest or on your table or on your knees, while you say the chant? Ready, one, two, three, here we go.

Diddle diddle dumpling, my son John, went to bed with trousers on, one shoe off and one shoe on, diddle diddle dumpling, my son John.

Good, let's remind ourselves of the rhythm of this song.

Here are our heartbeats, remember, you can see there are four heartbeats in every single bar, four beats in every bar.

Here's our rhythm for the first two bars, let's say it first, one, two and off we go.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Very good, clap and say it, off we go.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

One more time.

Clap and say it, ready, off we go.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Very good, just clap it and say it in your head.

Ti-ka-ti-ka.

One more time, clap it only, off we go.

Very good, let's add in our bar three and our bar four.

Just the bottom line.

Here we go, say it first.

One, two and off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Very good, one more time, say it out loud.

Ready, one, two, three, here we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Very good, clap it and say it, off we go! Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

One more time, clap and say it, ready off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Clap it by itself but say it in your head.

One more time, here we go.

Ready, one, two, three, here we go, Very good.

Let's clap and say it from the very top.

Here we go, one, two, three, here we go.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Very good, one more time.

Ready, here we go.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Clap it on its own but say it in your head.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Very good.

Now, let's take out our rhythm syllables and let's see if we can remember what each of the notes are and read it just as if we were reading music, which we are.

Ready? Clap and say, one, two, three, here we go.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Clap it by itself but say in your head.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Great job.

Let's now add in our chant from before.

Here we go.

Here's the words of Diddle Diddle Dumpling and we're going to clap the rhythm of the words in our music, while chanting the words at the same time.

Let's give it a go.

Diddle diddle, ready, off we go.

Diddle diddle dumpling, my son John, went to bed with trousers on, one shoe off and one shoe on, diddle diddle dumpling, my son John One more time, ready, off we go.

Diddle diddle dumpling, my son John, went to bed with trousers on, one shoe off and one shoe on, diddle diddle dumpling, my son John.

Great job.

Pause the video now, so that you can practise chanting Diddle Diddle Dumpling all the way through and clapping the rhythm of the music at the same time.

If you would like to do it with me one more time, rewind 20 seconds and we can practise together.

When you're ready to continue, click the play button.

A new musical note.

So, over the last few lessons, we have been discovering new notes that we can write and that we can read.

Let's remind ourselves of some of those notes.

This first note is a ta.

Let's do four ta's, my turn and then your turn.

Ta, ta, ta, ta.

Your turn, ready, off you go.

Ta, ta, ta, ta.

Say it a bit louder, here we go.

Ta, ta, ta, ta.

Very good, so that's our ta's.

One ta is one beat.

We also have our joined, can you remember what it's called? A ti-ti, ti-ti, and those two ti-ti's, those two notes together, make up one beat.

One, two, three, four.

Ti-ti, ready, your turn.

Ti-ti, two, three, four, ti-ti.

Good, let's do four ti's, four ti-ti's, one, two, three, here we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti.

One last time, off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, stop.

Very good, so we have our ta and we have our ti-ti.

Well done.

We also have this note, which has a big empty hole in the middle of it, can you remember what it's called? It is a ta-ah and it sounds and it looks like this.

Ta-ah, one more time.

Ta-ah, clap it with me.

Ta-ah, here we go.

Ready, one, two, three, four, ta-ah, three, four and ta-ah.

Good, let's do two ta-ah's in a row.

Ready, one, two, three, four.

Ta-ah, ta-ah.

One more time, ready, here we go.

Ta-ah, ta-ah.

Super, you've obviously been practising.

Okay, let's have a look at our next notes.

Hmm, can you remember what this is called? This had a great set of syllables, a great set of sounds to go with it.

It was ti-ka-ti-ka, ready, my turn first.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, off you go.

Say it a bit louder.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ready, your turn.

Really good.

My turn first, I'm going to do it four times.

Ready? My turn, listen first.

Ti-ka-ti-ka ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ka-ti-ka.

Your turn, ready, off we go.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ka-ti-ka.

Good, a ti-ka-ti-ka has four notes, ti-ka-ti-ka, but together, they last for the same amount of time as a ta or a ti-ti, which is one beat, one heartbeat.

We have a new note, which actually is a rest and a rest is something that we do nothing and we just are absolutely silent and we are very, very quiet in that rest.

It means that we don't play or make any sound during that time, so if you see this rest, this is called a ta rest but we're not going to say ta! We are going to whisper it as a ta.

Try it with me, one, two, three, four, ta.

Ready, one more time, ta.

Good, can you redo it four times? One, two, three, here we go.

Ta, ta, ta, ta.

Say it a bit quieter, off we go.

Ta, ta, ta, ta.

Good and that is a rest, we don't click or clap or pat at all, we rest, relax, just for that one beat because this ta rest lasts for one beat only, ta.

Okay, let's do some rhythm reading.

As you remember from our previous lessons, we have our rhythm and this is the order of what we need to do, so, we first of all, we say the notes and then we clap and say the notes and then we clap only but say it in our heads.

Let's take a look and remind ourselves of what these notes are.

Have we got our beats? Okay, there we go, there's our beats.

Ta, ti-ti, ta, ta.

Now, for that last ta rest, it's a whisper, ta.

Or it's even better if you can say it in your head, even better, ta.

Let's say it first, one, two, three, here we go.

Ta, ti-ti, ta, ta.

One more time, ready, off we go.

Ta, ti-ti, ta, ta.

Good, clap it and say it, off we go.

Ta, ti-ti, ta, ta.

One more time, off we go.

Ta, ti-ti, ta, ta.

One more time but clap it by itself.

One more time and off we go.

Great job.

Let's see what other rhythms we can read with our new found rest, our ta rest.

Okay, new rhythm, let's say it first.

Can you remember what these notes are called? They are joined at the top, of course they are called our ti-ti's, good, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ta.

Are you ready? One, two, say it, ready, here we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ta.

One more time, ready, off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ta.

Clap it and say it, ready, off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ta.

Very well done but clap it on its own.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ta.

One more time but say it in your head.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ta.

One more time, here we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ta.

Brilliant, great job.

Okay, we need something a little bit harder, okay.

Ooh, a mixture, we've got our, can you remember what they're called? We have our ta, ta, a ti-ka-ti-ka and we have a ta.

Let's give it a go, a little bit slower.

Say it first, one, two and off we go.

Ta, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta.

One more time and here we go.

Ta, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta.

Clap it and say it, ready, off we go.

Ta, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta.

One more time, ready, off we go.

Ta, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta.

Very nice, clap it by itself, here we go.

Ta, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta.

Say it in your head but clap it out loud.

Ta, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta.

One last time, ready, here we go.

Ta, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta.

Good job.

Our next rhythm, ooh, we're starting with a rest, we're starting with a ta rest, that's on our first beat, our second beat has a ti-ka-ti-ka, our third beat has a ta and our forth beat has a ta.

Let's say it, ready, off we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ta.

One more time, just say it by itself.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ta.

Clap it and say it, ready, off we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ta.

Clap it and say it, ready, off we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ta.

One more time, ready, here we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ta.

Very good, clap it by itself, here we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ta.

Last time, ready, here we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ta.

Very well done.

Okay, we need something more of a challenge, okay? Two rests in the middle, okay, so we start with a ti-ka-ti-ka, then we have a ta and another ta and then we finish with a ta.

Let's try it, ready? Say it out loud, ready, here we go.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ta, ta.

Make that last ta nice and strong, here we go.

One, two, three, here we go.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ta, ta.

Very good, now clap it and say it.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ta, ta.

One more time, ready, here we go.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ta, ta.

Very good, clap it by itself, here we go.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ta, ta.

One more time, ready, here we go.

Ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ta, ta.

Last time, ready, here we go.

Very good, okay, let's do another rhythm.

So, we have a ta rest, we have a ta rest, we have a ti-ka-ti-ka, another ta and then a ti-ka-ti-ka.

Say it, ready, here we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka.

Say it, ready, here we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka.

Say it one more time, ready, here we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka.

Clap it, say it, ready, off we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka.

One more time, ready, here we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka.

Clap it by yourself, ready, here we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka.

Last time, ready, here we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka.

Very nice, okay.

We haven't done this note in a little while, so this is our, can you remember? Ta-ah and then a ta and then a ti-ka-ti-ka.

Try it, say it, off we go.

Ta-ah, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka.

Clap it and say it, ready, off we go.

Ta-ah, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka.

Very well done, maybe one more time.

Ta-ah, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka.

Clap it only, off we go.

One more time, ready, off we go.

One more time, here we go.

Ta-ah, ta, ti-ka-ti-ka.

Very good, well done.

Okay, we are starting with a ta rest, another ta rest and then we finish with a ta-ah.

Here we go, one, two, say it, here we go.

Ta, ta, ta-ah.

Clap it and say it, ready, off we go.

Ta, ta, ta-ah.

One more time but clap it by itself.

One last time, ready, here we go.

Ta, ta, ta-ah.

Good job, well done.

Okay, we are starting with a ta and then a ti-ti and then finishing with a ta-ah.

Say it by itself, ready, here we go.

Ta, ti-ti, ta-ah.

One more time, ready, here we go.

Ta, ti-ti, ta-ah.

Clap it and say it, ready, here we go.

Ta, ti-ti, ta-ah.

One more time, ready, here we go.

Ta, ti-ti, ta-ah.

Clap it by itself, ready, here we go.

Ta, ti-ti, ta-ah.

One last time, here we go.

Very nice, well done.

Last one.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta-ah.

Say it, ready, off we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta-ah.

Clap it and say it, ready, off we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta-ah.

Clap it by itself, ready, here we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta-ah.

One last time, ready, here we go.

Ta, ti-ka-ti-ka, ta-ah.

Very well done.

Pause the video now and let's try clapping the rhythms one more time.

Rewind the video 20 seconds and let's practise together once more.

When you're ready to continue, click the play button.

The Cup Game.

As it might have mentioned in the title, for this game you will need a cup.

Now, please make sure that this cup is made of something that won't break, so make sure it's made out of something like plastic or cardboard, absolutely fine.

Please make sure it's not made out of glass and if you're not sure, make sure you ask a parent or a carer to find one for you.

Make sure that you have your cup in front of you but we are going to start first with the words.

If you need to pause the video now, so that you can get that cup, do that now.

My turn first.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap, clap, up, down.

Clap, now turn it all around.

For this game, there is a chant, I'm going to say a line and you can say it back to me.

My turn first.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap.

Ready, you're turn, off you go.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap.

My turn, here I go.

Clap, up, down.

Your turn.

Clap, up, down.

Good, let's stick it together from the top.

Ready, steady and off we go.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap, clap, up, down.

One more time.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap, clap, up, down.

Good, the last two lines, they sound like this.

My turn first, listen very carefully.

Clap, now turn it all around.

Your turn.

Clap, now turn it all around.

Very good, let's put it together from the top.

Here we go, one, two, three, off we go.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap, clap, up, down, clap, now turn it all around.

Very good, let's say it two times in a row.

Ready, one, two and off we go.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap, clap, up, down, clap, now turn it all around.

And again, clap, clap, tap tap tap, clap, up, down, clap, now turn it all around.

Very good, now make sure that you have your cup in front of you because we'll need it in a little while.

Let's work out the rhythm of our words in our music.

Now, for this piece, we have two beats in every single bar, there's our two beats going into every single bar.

Let's take a look at our first part and let's see if we can recognise any of the notes that are popping up.

I can definitely see some ta's in there, a ti-ti and that squiggle at the end, remember, that's a ta rest, okay.

Let's see if we can say the rhythm first, say it first.

One, two, ready, off we go.

Ta, ta, ti-ti, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta.

Good, one more time, ready, off we go.

Ta, ta, ti-ti, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta.

Good, clap it and say it.

Ready, steady, off we go.

Ta, ta, ti-ti, ta, ta, ta, ta, rest.

One more time, clap it on its own but say it in your head, ready, off we go.

Ta, ta, ti-ti, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta.

One more time, clap it out loud, say it in your head.

Ready, off we go.

Ta, ta, ti-ti, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta.

Great job, okay, let's add in that second line.

This is slightly easier because actually most of these notes are all ta, except for our last squiggle, which means a ta, it's a ta rest.

Let's see if we can read that second line all the way through.

One, two, say it, off we go.

Ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta.

Don't forget that rest of the end.

Clap it and say it, ready, off we go.

Ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta.

Good, let's clap it but say it in our heads.

One, two, three, here we go.

Ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta.

Great, okay, let's do it from the very, very top.

Okay, we're going to clap it and say it together.

One, two, three, here we go.

Ta, ta, ti-ti, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta.

Good, okay, let's see if we can clap it and say it in our heads.

One, two, three, here we go.

Shh, very nice.

Okay, let's do it one more time but without those rhythm syllables, without those sounds underneath.

One, two, clap it on its own.

Very nice.

Let's add in those words again, from our Cup Game, ready? We're going to say the words and we are going to clap the rhythm at the same time.

Ready, a one, two, three, here we go.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap, clap, up, down, shh, clap, now turn it all around, shh.

One more time, ready, here we go.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap, clap, up, down, shh, clap, now turn it all around, shh.

Well done.

Okay, it is finally time for us to use our cups and make sure it is upside down and in front of you.

My turn first.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap.

So, we're going to clap when we say clap and when we say tap three times, we're going to tap on the top of the cup, so our cups upside down, tap tap tap, ready? Tap tap tap.

My turn first and then your turn.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap.

Ready, your turn, ready, here we go.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap.

Very good, one more time, here we go.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap.

Good, now I'm going to use my right hand on my next part, it goes clap, up, down.

Just try that part with me.

One, two, three, here we go.

Clap, up, down.

Let's try it one more time, ready, here we go.

Clap, up, down.

Good.

Right, let's put those two parts together.

One, two, three, here we go.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap, clap, up, down.

Good, one last time, ready, here we go.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap, clap, up, down.

Good, well done.

The next part.

Clap, now, we're just going to do that part, so we're using our right hand, we're going to go, clap, and then we're going to reach over and grab it when we say, now.

Can we try that really slowly? Clap, now.

Let's try that one more time, a bit faster.

Clap, now.

A bit faster.

Clap, now, and again.

Clap, now, one more time.

Clap, now, good.

The next time we do it, we're going to freeze and keep our hand here.

One, two, three, here we go.

Clap, now, freeze! And then when we pick it up, we're going to turn it around and when we turn, we're going to hit this part of the cup against our left hand.

Turn it, turn it.

Try it with me.

Turn it, turn it, turn it, turn it.

Now, let's try that from the very, very top, really slowly.

One, two, three, here we go.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap, clap, up, down, good, clap, now turn it.

Good, let's try that one more time.

One, two, three, here we go.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap, clap, up, down, clap, now turn it, freeze and when we turn it over, we're going to carry on turning it and grab it with the left hand, all, let go with your right hand, around.

Let's do that last bit together.

So, clap, clap, tap tap tap, clap, up, down, clap, now turn it, keep on turning it, all, with our left hand, put your right hand down, around.

Good, so that last bit we are moving our cup from our right hand to our left hand, so we go, all around.

So, we've turned it, turned it, turned it, turned it, all around, let's try it from the top.

Don't worry if you don't get this first time, it will take a little bit of practise and we will be doing it in the next couple of lessons as well.

Really slowly, one, two, three, here we go.

Clap, clap, tap tap tap, clap, up, down, clap, now turn it all round.

Very good.

Pause the video now, so that you can practise the Cup Game all the way through.

Now, if you would like to practise once more together, rewind 20 seconds and we can go through each of the steps.

When you're ready to continue, click the play button.

Great job! Now from today's lesson, you now can sing and clap to Hey Ho Nobody Home, you can understand our new notes, called ti-ka-ti-ka, ti-ka-ti-ka, you can read some basic rhythms and you can read the rhythm for the Cup Game.

If you would like to share any of your work with Oak National, you can ask your parent or carer to share your work on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, tagging @OakNational and #LearnWithOak.

A huge well done for all of your work today, I know that the Cup Game is a little bit more complicated but we're going to be practising it over the next two lessons as well.

So, practise as much as you can and I will see you in the next lesson, goodbye.
