Finding the pulse.

In any piece of music, there is a steady beat called a pulse.

It's like a beating heartbeat, which keeps on beating throughout.

It is steady.

And we can tap along to different pieces of music and find that pulse.

When you listen to music, often, you'll find yourself tapping or stomping or clapping or dancing to the pulse of the music.

We're going to give it a go with a few pieces of music.

You need to listen to each song, and as soon as you can, as you recognise where the pulse is, see if you can clap or pat or tap the pulse along with the music.

Here we go.

Ready to clap along with each of the pieces of music.

Here we go.

We are now moving on to rhythm.

Rhythm is how we organise different lengths of sounds, and it can be described as a pattern of short and long sounds.

Here's my pulse again.

One, two, three, four.

I'm now going to play the rhythm on my chest, which uses short and long sounds.

You can tell me which is more exciting, is it the pulse or the rhythm? Here we go.

I hope you agree, it was definitely the rhythm.

The rhythm is the exciting world of patterns of different lengths of sounds.

It is described as how we organise different lengths of sounds, that's rhythm.

Musical notes.

The notes.

Now the musical notes that we are going to be looking at is how we write the notes.

The lengths of sounds, the different rhythms. This is our very first note.

It is called "ta" my turn, and then your turn.

Ta, ready, your turn.

Ta, very good.

I'm going to clap on my ta, ready ta.

Ready? One, two, listen first, my turn here I go, ta, two, three, four, ta, two, three, four, ta, two, three, four, ta, two, three, four.

Your turn, here we go.

Ta, two, three, four, ta, two, three, four, ta, two, three, four, ta, two, three, four.

You're going to give me full tas like this, ta, ta, ta, ta.

Your turn, ready, here we go.

Ta, ta, ta, ta.

Say it louder, here we go.

Ta, ta, ta, ta.

Very nice.

Ta lasts for one heartbeat, it lasts for one beat.

Ta lasts for one beat, ta.

We've also got this, and it's got a joined up head here.

So it looks like there's a line here, goes straight down the line and we've got two dots at the end.

This is ti-ti, like two letter T's, ti-ti'.

My turn, then your turn.

Ti-ti, ready, off you go.

Ti-ti, very nice.

My turn, ti-ti.

Off you go.

Very nice.

I'm going to count to four, and then I'll give a ti-ti, which only for one beat as well.

One, two, three, four, ti-ti, two, three, four, ti-ti, two, three, four, ti-ti, two, three, four, Ti-ti, two, three, four.

And now it's your turn, here we go.

Ti-ti, two, three, four, ti-ti, two, three, four, ti-ti, two, three, four, ti-ti, two, three, four.

Let's do four ti-tis in a row.

One, two, three, here we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti.

Good, one more time, here we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti.

Good four ta's, we're going to go back to our ta's.

Remember, four ta's is ta ta, ta, ta.

Ready, together, and off we go, ta, ta, ta, ta.

That's good, now four ti-ti's.

Ready, one, two, and off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti.

Very nice.

This is our pulse.

You're going to give me four ti-tis.

Ready, one, two, three, here we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti.

One more time, ready, here we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti.

One more time, ready, here we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti.

One more time, ready, here we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti.

Good, so we have a ta and we have a ti-ti.

Both of them last for one beat only.

Let's see if we can do a little bit of reading over them.

So let's have a look.

On our screen we have, who can remember what these are? Absolutely right, they are tas.

We have four tas on the screen.

Brilliant.

Well, okay.

Let's say it first, ready? One, two, three, here we go.

Ta, ta, ta, ta.

Say a bit louder, off we go.

Ta, ta, ta, ta.

Good.

The next step is that we're going to clap and say it at the same time.

Like this, ta, ta, ta, ta.

Together with me, ready, here we go.

Ta, ta, ta, ta.

One more time, ready, here we go.

Ta, ta, ta, ta.

Very nice.

Now I'm going to ask you to do something.

When you're reading each of the notes, we need to make sure that you're watching every single note that goes past.

One more time, ready, off we go.

And, ta, ta, ta, ta.

Good.

So that was step two.

Number three is that we are going to swallow our tas, I'm going to say it loudly in our head, and we're going to clap the tas, ready? One, two, three, here we go.

One more time, ready, here we go.

Last time, here we go, and.

Brilliant.

I think you've nailed those tas, fantastic.

So that is the order of how we're going to read our rhythms. We're going to say the notes first, ta, ta, ta, ta.

Then we're going to clap and say them at the same time, ta, ta, ta, ta.

And finally, we're going to clap only, but make sure we are saying it in our head.

Ready? Just like that.

Let's take a look at another rhythm.

Hmm, these are not tas because they are joined at the very top.

Can you remember what they are called? Brilliant, each of these are ti-ti.

See if you can say it with me.

One, two, ready off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, Say it again, ready off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti.

Good, one more time, ready off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti.

Good.

This time we're going to clap it and say it at the same time.

One, two, three, here we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti.

One more time, ready, here we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti.

Last time, ready, here we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti.

Good.

Now, this is the last step.

We're going to swallow our words and we're going to just clap, but say it in our head.

One, two, ready, off we go.

One more time, ready, off we go.

Watch the notes, ready, off we go.

Last time, off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti.

Good.

Very well done.

Too easy for some of you, okay, fine.

Let's give you a little bit something a little difficult, a little bit more challenging.

Let's have it.

Hmm, hmm? What have we got? Okay, let's have a look.

So we've got a ta, then a ta, and then a ta, and what's that last one? It is, yeah.

It's a ti-ti, when we've got two T's.

Brilliant, let's say it first.

Ready, one, two, off we go.

Ta, ta, ta, ti-ti.

One more time, ready, off we go.

Ta, ta, ta, ti-ti.

Clap it and say it, ready, off we go.

Ta, ta, ta, ti-ti.

One more time, clap it and say it.

Ta, ta, ta, ti-ti.

Clap it by itself, say in your head.

One more time, ready off we go.

Last time, off we go.

Good.

Don't forget to watch each of the notes as you are reading them.

And when you're reading each of the notes, you're reading it like a book.

You're reading it from the left all the way through to the right.

Should we try a new rhythm? Here we go.

Ooh, interesting.

Okay, so we have, what do we have? I'll give you five seconds to see if you can figure it out.

Four, three, two, one.

It is a ta, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti.

Let's say it first, ready? One, two, and off we go.

Ta, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti.

Clap it and say it, ready, off we go.

Ta, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti.

One more time, ready, off we go.

Ta, ta, ti-ti, ti-ti.

Clap it by itself, and say in your head.

One more time, off we go.

Well done, let's try a new rhythm.

Hmm, interesting.

It looks a little bit back-to-front actually.

Let's take a look and I'll give you five seconds, can you figure out what they are? Three, two, one, yes! Ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ta.

Let's say it, ready, one, two, and off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ta.

Clap it and say it, ready, off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ta, ta.

Clap it by itself, and say it in your head.

Do that one more time, ready, off we go.

Last time, ready, here we go.

Good job.

A new rhythm.

Ooh, okay.

Five seconds, can you tell me what each of these are? Four, three, two, one.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Ready, say it, off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Clap it and say it, ready, off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Just clap it, ready, off we go.

Last time, off we go.

Very nice, indeed.

Okay, let's make it a little bit harder for you.

Hang on a second, wait.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

That's the rhythm that we've just clapped.

We've used that before.

Engine, engine number nine.

Hmm, my turn, and then your turn.

Engine, engine number nine.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Let's see if we can work out the rhythm for engine, engine number nine.

Okay, let's break it down.

In our first box, our first bar, we are going to have this rhythm.

Let's say it together.

I'm going to see if you can say it without the words underneath.

Take a look, and see if you can think, is it a ta or a ti-ti to begin with? And what's on the second heartbeat, what's under the third heartbeat, what's under the fourth heartbeat.

Try it with me.

One, two, off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Let's take a look.

Good.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Do it together, ready, off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Very nice, okay.

Let's carry on with this sentence and see where the music goes.

Okay so we've got another four heartbeats.

Hmm.

That looks the same, doesn't it? Brilliant, okay.

So we can do that.

That we can do, that top right box.

One, two, and off we go.

Ti-ti, oops.

One, two, and off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Very nice, okay, alright.

What about this third box? Okay, we've got four more heartbeats.

Do you notice anything? Yeah, it's the same rhythm in this bar as well in this box.

Hmm.

Let's see if we do that third box, ready, steady, off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Very good, a-one more time.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Good, shall we see what's in that fourth box? That last box.

Four heartbeats.

And it's the same rhythm.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Well, let's clap and say that last box as well.

One, two, and off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Alright.

Let's see if we can read the rhythm all the way through from the first box, all the way through to the end, to the fourth box.

The first bar all the way through to the last bar.

That's all the way from to the top.

All the way through that top line to the bottom line.

Just like we're reading a book, we go back to the beginning of the sentence and we go to the next line underneath.

Here we go.

We're going to say it all the way through first, so no clapping.

You can put your hands behind your back.

One, two, off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

One more time, pat the pulse, one, two, and off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Good.

This time, let's clap and say our rhythm.

One, two, ready, off we go.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, ta.

Swallow those words, now clap it by itself, here we go.

One more time, ready, off we go.

Well done.

Let's see what those words look like.

So we've got the same rhythm all the way through without the words, hmm.

I wonder if we can chant our words while clapping the rhythm.

It will sound like this.

Engine, engine number nine going down the central line see it sparkle, see it shine engine, engine number nine.

Try it together, ready, off we go.

Engine, engine number nine going down the central line see it sparkle, see it shine engine, engine number nine.

One more time, ready, off we go.

Engine, engine number nine going down the central line see it sparkle, see it shine engine, engine number nine.

Very well done.

There is another verse that happens as well.

Shall we'll try it straight away.

Ready, steady, and off we go.

Engine, engine number nine going down the central line if the train should jump the track do you want your money back? One more time, ready, here we go.

Engine, engine number nine going down the central line if the train should jump the track do you want your money back? Really great job, well done.

Clap the rhythm of the music at the same time.

Queen Caroline.

There once was a queen who had very shiny hair, but only when she washed it in turpentine.

And turpentine is a kind of oil.

Can you imagine washing your hair in oil? Ugh, not water, oil.

The chant sounds like this.

Queen Queen Caroline washed her hair in turpentine turpentine made it shine Queen Queen Caroline.

My turn first, and then your turn.

Listen, my turn, here I go.

Queen Queen Caroline Queen Queen Caroline washed her hair in turpentine washed her hair in turpentine turpentine made it shine turpentine made it shine Queen Queen Caroline Queen Queen Caroline.

That's great, let's try it from the top.

Ready, off we go.

The even pulse.

Try it to say it one more time.

Ready? Ready, steady, off we go.

Queen Queen Caroline washed her hair in turpentine turpentine made it shine Queen Queen Caroline.

Well done.

Let's see if we can figure out the rhythm.

So we've got our heartbeats and you'll notice that in every single bar and every single box, there's the same number of beats.

Let's see, we've got one, two, three, four.

So on every bar, we have four beats.

Let's have a look at our first bar.

Hmm, can you remember what those notes are? They are, ta, ta, ti-ti, ta.

Let's say it first, ready? One, two, and off we go.

Say it first, one, two, and ready, one, two, three, here we go.

A huge well done for all of your work today, great job.

From today's lesson.

you now can find the pulse in a piece of music.

You can understand some basic rhythms. You can understand our ta and our ti-ti, clap them and read them.

And you can read some basic rhythms as well.

If you would like to, you can ask a parent or carer to share some of the work that you've been doing in your music lessons.
