Hi, there.

I'm Mrs. Howley, and this is Cedric.

But he's asleep.

I can hear him snoring.

We're going to have to wake him up 'cause we've got lots to do today.

We're going to be writing.

Can you say, wake up Cedric.

One, two, three.

Wake up, Cedric! Oh, a big yawn.

Oh, and now he's ready to learn.

Let's see what we're up to today.

In this lesson, lesson five of this unit, we're going to draw and describe a character from The Emperor's New Clothes.

We're going to start with a nursery rhyme.

Then we're going to draw and describe the character.

And then we're going to write about the character.

For this lesson, you will need a pencil and some paper, your brilliant brain and a teddy talk partner to share ideas with.

Pause the video now, so you can collect those things.

Press play when you're ready.

We're going to start with our nursery rhyme.

And in this unit we started with ♪ Row, row, row, your boat ♪ ♪ Gently down the stream ♪ That's right.

But then we recycled it for The Emperor's New Clothes story.

I've got a new verse for us today and I think you'll like it.

In this one, we think about the people watching the emperor when he comes walking out in his pants.

And after the silence, everybody starts laughing.

That's right.

It goes like this.

Listen, first.

♪ Laugh, laugh, laugh with me ♪ ♪ Do the laughing dance ♪ ♪ The emperor is so foolish ♪ ♪ He's standing in his pants ♪ Should we try that with the actions first? ♪ Laugh, laugh, laugh with me ♪ ♪ Do the laughing dance ♪ ♪ The emperor is so foolish ♪ ♪ He's standing in his pants ♪ You can join in this time.

♪ Laugh, laugh, laugh with me ♪ ♪ Do the laughing dance ♪ ♪ The emperor is so foolish ♪ ♪ He's standing in his pants ♪ Well done.

The emperor is very foolish, isn't he? I wonder what he might say when he walks out in front of the crowd.

When we're thinking about character and writing about character, we think about what the character thinks, what the character says, and what the character does.

That's right, Cedric.

We could sing, "The Character Song." That's a great idea to help us remember.

Can you join in? ♪ Character, how do we do it ♪ ♪ Character, how do we do it ♪ ♪ Character, how do we do it ♪ ♪ Let me show you how ♪ ♪ We show what they think ♪ ♪ We show what they say ♪ ♪ We show what they do ♪ ♪ That's how we do it ♪ Got it, Cedric? We describe what the characters think, what they say and what they do.

The emperor, when he walks out in front of the crowd, what do you think he's thinking? He doesn't know that he's not wearing any clothes.

What do you think he might be thinking, Cedric? I look fantastic.

I bet he does.

We're going to have a go at drawing the character.

That's right, Cedric, we're going to describe the character while we're drawing him.

So, let's have a think.

Let's imagine that moment of the story.

The emperor walks out in front of the crowds.

How might we describe him? I wonder if you could think of a describing word, Cedric.

An adjective.

Foolish.

He is foolish.

He's so silly because he thinks he's wearing really fancy clothes.

What else do we know about the emperor? He has got lots of money, Cedric, because he spends lots and lots on new clothes.

So we could say he is rich.

Right.

So he's foolish.

He's rich.

I wonder what he might look like.

We know he's wearing his underpants.

but what could he be wearing on his head? That's right, he could be wearing a crown, Cedric.

What could he be wearing on his feet? When I draw the emperor I'm going to draw him with some special golden boots.

I'm going to have a go now.

And while I'm drawing, I'm going to describe what I can see.

Okay, so I'm going to start with a circle for his head.

I'll give him some ears, and then I'm going to use Cedric's idea and I'm going to give him a golden crown on top of his head.

I think it's sparkling in the sun, that crown.

He feels very proud of it.

Oh, look, he's got a big grin.

I think he's thinking, I look fantastic.

And then, oh yes, I'm going to draw him with his arms behind his back.

He feels so fantastic because he thinks he's wearing the fancy clothes.

He doesn't know that the clothes aren't real.

Give him some legs, and then very importantly he's going to be wearing some golden boots.

And they are also going to be sparkling in the sun.

He thinks he looks fantastic.

Could you have a go now at drawing the emperor? I wonder what you might put on his head.

What would he wear, that would go with the fancy clothes he thinks he's wearing? You could draw a big sun hat.

I wonder what you might draw on his feet.

You might have gold boots or red boots or yellow boots.

Pause the video now and have a go at drawing the emperor.

Remember to describe what you can see while you're drawing.

Press play when you're ready.

How did you get on? I'd love to see your pictures, and so would Cedric.

We're going to write some sentences now to go with our drawing.

And when we write sentences, we remember our capital letters, finger spaces, spellings, our full stop, and we make sure it makes sense.

We've got some high frequency words here that we're going to use in our sentences.

Could you practise them with me? My turn, then your turn.

The, the, he, he, has, has, is, is, a, a.

We've also got some star words.

Some tricky words that we know are going to be hard to spell, but we need them in our writing.

We've got, foolish, gold, crowd, and boots.

Also, when we're writing we're going to use our phonics to spell some words.

What do we have to do Cedric? Say the word.

That's right.

Robot the word.

And then write the word.

Let's have a think about our first sentence, Cedric.

Cedric would like to describe something about what he looks like.

Can I describe his gold boots? Right, let me see.

He has golden boots.

He has shining boots.

He has gold boots.

Okay.

He has gold boots.

Capital letter.

He has gold boots.

Full stop.

He, that's one of our high frequency words, has, high-frequency words.

He has gold, that was one of our star words, that's right.

He has gold boots.

B, oo, t, s.

So, we'll start with our capital letter for he, one of our high-frequency words.

He, finger space.

He has, another one of our high-frequency words.

He has, he has gold, finger space, gold, one of our star words.

He has gold, he has gold boots.

B, oo, t, s.

You might not have learnt that oo sound yet, but we've put that on to our star words.

He has gold, b, oo, t, s.

He has gold boots.

Full stop.

Now, the emperor does lots of very silly things.

Like he thinks the cloth was unreal.

So, what could we say about the emperor? He is foolish.

He is foolish.

That would make a great sentence.

He, capital letter at the start.

He is foolish.

Full stop.

He is foolish.

So, he is foolish.

We start with our capital letter for our high-frequency word, he.

He, finger space.

He is, another one of our high frequency words.

He is, finger space, foolish.

He is foolish.

This is one of our star words today.

He is foolish.

What do we need at the end of our sentence? A? He is foolish.

Full stop, that's right.

Now in our character song we said that we should describe what the character does.

What do you think that the emperor might do in front of the crowd? He might wave.

He might, he might, grin, I love that one, Cedric.

He grins at the crowd.

He grins at the crowd.

He, that's one of our high frequency word, grins, let's see if we can use our phonics.

Grins.

G, r, i, n, s.

Grins.

He grins at the, high frequency words, crowd.

You might not have learned that ou sound yet.

So I'll put that in our star words.

But let's have a go.

Crowd.

C, r, ow, d.

Crowd.

He grins at the crowd.

Capital letter.

He grins at the crowd.

Full stop.

So capital letter for he, one of our high frequency words finger space, grins, g, r, i, n, s, grins g, r, i, n, s.

Now it's your turn to have a go at describing the emperor.

Maybe using some sentences, just like me and Cedric.

You might describe his boots or his crown.

You might say he has a gold crown.

You might talk about what he's like.

I wrote, he is foolish.

You could write he is rich.

But what else is he doing? You could write he waves at the crowd.

Have a go.

I've put some high-frequency words and some star words for you.
