Hello! I'm Adam, and this is Panda.

And we are on Unit 6, Lesson 8, using the story The King and the Moon.

Let's see what's on the agenda for today's lesson.

So for our warmup today, Panda and I are going to teach you a pirate song.

Why are we doing that? Because this story about The King and the Moon has turned into a story about pirate fairies.

After that, we're going to do some reading, looking at some of the words that we can say in the story when we tell it, and then Panda and I are going to teach you how to step out the new story.

And we're doing that because in Lesson 10, you'll be telling the story independently.

We know that word, don't we, Panda, because it's one of the words of our unit.

Let's start with learning a pirate song.

So for our warmup today, Panda and I are going to teach you one of our favourite songs.

It's called, That's the Life for Me.

And we sing it pretending that we're pirates.

So it's one of those songs with numbers in, and each of the numbers has a rhyme.

Let me teach you the first verse, and then I'll tell you the rhyme each time we sing a new verse.

So the first one goes, you can imagine, it's the number one.

When I was one.

oh, the tune.

♪ When I was one I'd just begun ♪ ♪ The day I went to sea ♪ ♪ I jumped aboard a pirate ship ♪ ♪ And the captain said to me ♪ ♪ We're going this way, that way, forwards, backwards ♪ ♪ Over the deep blue sea ♪ ♪ A bottle of rum to fill my tum ♪ ♪ And that's the life for me ♪ So I'm hoping you can join in and try some of the actions, although I'll be playing the guitar, so it's difficult for me to do those things but.

♪ This way, that way, forwards, backwards ♪ ♪ Over the deep blue sea ♪ It would be great if you could do that.

And rum, well, rum was one of those drinks that pirates were supposed to love.

♪ A bottle of rum to fill my tum ♪ ♪ And that's the life for me ♪ Here we go.

Are we ready? Here we go.

I think it's time for some reading.

So you can see for this reading activity, I've got my reading glasses on, and they're blue, and that helps me read.

Okay, with your teachers, you have been working on the sounds that letters make in sounding out words.

When you're reading and you're writing with Panda and I, we've been focusing on high-frequency words, words that we see a lot in our reading.

Some of them, you just have to know them because you can't sound them out.

Anyway, here's a high-frequency word we're going to use.

It's "was." And "was" is a great word we can use in this story.

Here's the crab.

Do you remember, he's in his little hole, and he's saying, "Please keep the noise down!" And then something happens.

Yeah, a pirate fairy puts their foot into his little hole.

Now the crab doesn't know that.

Can you see the word "was" here? There it is.

"What was that?" said the crab.

Here we go again because it happens with all the characters.

Was.

See if you can spot it in this next sentence.

It's the gorilla.

He says, "What was that?" said the gorilla.

What was that? It was the second word.

Was.

Did you spot it? Shall we read it together? "What was that?" said the gorilla.

You can probably guess what the writing's going to say here.

Maybe we'll just show you the writing.

Do you want to read it in your head? The mango is just hitting the whale on the head, and the whale goes, "What was that?" said the whale.

We could use that today in our character reactions to all the things that happen.

So that's the word "was." Very useful word.

This brings us to our stepping activity.

So before we step, though, let's have a look at the map.

Now we've got these pirate fairies.

They've got everything.

Lots of treasure, lots of gold, but they haven't got the moon.

And they want the moon.

And they love it so much, they sing to the moon.

♪ We're pirate fairies, we love the moon ♪ while this poor little crab can't bear the noise.

"Please, stop the noise!" And then one of the pirate fairies steps on his little home.

"What was that?" goes the crab.

And he scuttles and he scuttles and he scuttles so fast, he runs over the foot of a great big hairy gorilla.

"What was that?" says the gorilla, and he throws the mango.

Whee! Boing! "What was that?" goes the whale, and the whale flicks her tail and makes a wave.

Psshhhoow! And gets the pirate fairies soaking wet.

So now we follow the red lines back because on this map, we use the word "because" to explain all the characters' arguments, their explanations.

So they go, "Why did you flick your tail, Whale, and get us wet?" "It was not me," said the whale, "because I was scared by the mango thrown by the great big hairy gorilla." So it's the gorilla's fault.

So the pirate fairies go to the gorilla.

"It was not me because I was scared by the crab scuttling across my foot." And the crab said, "Well, it was not me because it was your horrible singing and the fact that one of you put your foot through my little house! So it's all your fault.

You love the moon too much." And the pirate fairies go, "It's true.

We do love the moon." And they get excited.

And they climb the highest mountain to try and reach the moon with their nets.

And who knows? Those pirate fairies are still trying to do that, singing their song.

♪ We're pirate fairies, we love the moon ♪ ♪ We're pirate fairies, we sing this tune ♪ So that is our story map, and now we're going to step the story out.

I'll show you what to do first.

So for this activity, I am standing up, and I'll ask you just to watch for the first time if that's okay.

We're going to step the story in two halves.

And so I've got to think of how I'm going to be the characters.

So for Crab, I think I might do that.

Do you want to try that? For great big hairy Gorilla, I think I'll do that.

And for the whale, because whales have a blowhole, psshhh, I might do that.

But of course the whale also flicks her tail.

What else? Oh, I'm a pirate fairy, and I love to dance, so I might do that action for that.

Okay.

For stepping the story, we imagine that on the floor are some stepping stones, and every time we put a foot on a stepping stone, we do an action, and we might say something that helps us remember the story.

It's fun.

Right.

Do you want to watch for the first time? My first step might be, once upon a time, there were some pirate fairies.

And they were rich, but they loved the moon.

They really wanted the moon.

♪ We're pirate fairies, we love the moon ♪ First, they scared a crab.

The crab scared a great big hairy gorilla.

The gorilla scared - pssshhh! - the whale.

The whale flicked her tail.

Pssshhhh, came a wave, pssshhh! Uaaagh! And got the pirate fairies wet.

Should we do that together? If you're able to, could you stand, and we'll do the actions together.

You can say the words in your head if you would like to.

That's fine.

If you want to say them out loud, that's fine too.

So our first step will go, once upon a time, there were some pirate fairies, and they loved the moon.

♪ We're pirate fairies, we love the moon ♪ ♪ We're pirate fairies, we sing this tune ♪ First they scared a crab.

Good.

The crab scared a great big hairy gorilla.

The gorilla threw a mango.

Boing! The mango scared the whale.

Pssshhh! The whale flicked her tail.

Pssshhh! Ooh! Pssshhh! And the pirates got wet.

Pirates, they love the moon, they scare a crab, then it's the gorilla, then it's the whale.

I'm going to pause the video now.

Could you try on your own to step the story to the bit where the pirates get soaking wet? And when you're finished, come back and we'll look at the next bit of the story.

Okay? Time for work.

So how are you getting on? We are really challenging you with these stories.

But once you know the story up until the bit where the pirates get wet, it really helps with the next bit.

So would you like to watch me first? So the pirates are wet, and they are angry.

Show me how angry they are.

Hrrm! Now they want to know who is to blame.

So then my next step.

First, they see the whale.

Pssshhh.

"Not me," says the whale, "Because I was scared by the gorilla." "Not me," said the gorilla, "I was scared by the crab." "Not me," said the crab, "I was scared by you and your horrible singing to the moon!" "Oh," said the fairies, and they climbed the mountain, and they tried to catch the moon with fishing nets, singing their songs.

Perhaps they're there still.

Should we do that together? Are you ready? If you're able to, stand up.

And it's fine if you watch and do these things in your imagination too.

So our next step would be, "Hrrmm! I blame you, Whale!" "Not me," said the whale.

"I was scared by the gorilla." "Not me," said Gorilla.

"I was scared by the crab." "Not me," said the crab.

"I was scared by you and your horrible singing to the moon!" "We do love the moon.

Ah! Let's try and catch it!" ♪ We're pirate fairies, we love the moon ♪ Would you like to try that? So first, the whale, "Not me.

It was the gorilla." The gorilla says, "Not me.

It was the crab." The crab says, "Not me.

It was you." Try that now.

Time to work.

I'm going to pause the video.

So how are you getting on? Remember, we love to see your work, even your stepping.

So if your carers and teachers are able to, please share your work with us, Oak Academy.

We love to see it.

Well, we'll be putting those two halves of the story together in the next lesson and also looking at how we can use the word "because" when we tell the story as well.
