Hello everybody my name's Ms. Chamberlain-Webber.

And I'm really excited about this spelling lesson.

This is because it's a follow up lesson from lesson two in this unit, which was a spelling lesson about the suffixes -ant, -ant, -ant.

If you haven't yet watched that video, please stop this video now and go and watch lesson two of this unit.

Because in that lesson, we investigate why these suffixes are quite difficult to spell.

They sound the same.

So what we did is we looked at some spelling rules and some spelling patterns that will help us decide which spelling to use a bit better.

In this lesson today, we're going to review those rules and patterns, and then we're going to look at a way we can practise our spellings.

Finally, we will have a test of the 10 spelling words I set at the end of last lesson.

Let's get started.

First we will review spelling patterns and our spelling words.

We are going to learn a new strategy and finally have a test at the end of the lesson.

You're going to need paper and a pencil for this lesson pause the video now, if you need to go and get these things.

Also try and be in a nice, calm, quiet space with your brain switched on ready for your learning.

Key vocabulary, have a read of each of these definitions.

What is the key word? Pause the video to give you some time.

A person place or thing is a noun.

The word onto which a prefix or suffix attached is root.

And finally, a group of letters at the end of a word that change its meaning are suffixes or a suffix.

Review spelling rules.

How a look at these two words, how are they different and how are they the same? They both have a suffix at the end.

What is the suffix for a brilliant? Ant, what is the suffix for a recent? Ent, they slightly differ.

So let's look at some spelling rules.

Contest, they won the talent contest.

What happens when we add a suffix to the end, ant becomes contestant.

Read the sentence with me.

The contestant refused to perform.

This is interesting because contest is a noun.

What word class is contestant? Also a noun.

I want you to pause the video and think about which suffix will be added to the root word differ and how the word class might change.

Differ, Spanish differs from English.

Is it -ant or - ent added? Different with a -ent.

The apples tastes different.

What's happened to the word class? It's changed from a verb to defer to an adjective, to describe something as different means it's an adjective.

How about the spelling of the root word? It's the same for both.

What's happened let have a look at suffix spelling mind map to help us with this rule.

In fact, this time can you point out the one that's been applied? We've just added the suffix, having a look at the words again, you can see -ant and -ent were just added straight onto the end.

Let's look at this word excel.

The team excels under pressure.

It means doing very well and it's an adjective.

Which suffix is added to this root word? It's -ent, can you tell me what's happened to the spelling of the root wood excel? It's doubled the consonant l.

Point at the spelling rule that's been applied for excellent.

The consonant has been doubled.

Have a go, adding -ent or -ant to this word repel.

A reptiles skin repels predators.

Repel becomes repellent with an -ent use this insect repellent.

These time, the word class has changed to a noun.

And what's happened to the spelling? I hope you remembered to double your l.

How about for the root word observe? Time to observe the experiment this time -ant suffix is added on and something's changed out the root word.

Can you point at the letter that's been removed? The e has being removed before adding the suffix, have a go by yourself with this word, preside.

The preside is a verb meaning to take charge.

He asked if I would preside over the meeting, which suffix is added to this word? And what happens to the spelling? Write down the answers and pause your video now.

Preside has the suffix -ent added to it, but it's important to remove the e before adding -ent.

Who is the president of the USA? The word has changed from a verb to noun, a person.

So please point at the spelling rule that was applied to the root word preside to form president.

Removing the e and adding the suffix -ent.

Finally, our spelling rule for the root word comply.

Can you already spot what needs to be done? To comply is a verb.

She refused to comply with the rules.

Please write down what the word will be once this suffix has been added to it and how the word has changed.

Compliant, the suffix -ant has been added but what happened to the y? It's removed and changed to an I.

The students were to compliant.

Time to point at the spending rule that was applied for compliant.

Pause the video here and changed the root word vary into the word with the suffix added on the end.

Vary becomes variant with -ant.

It means something that is different.

Handball is a variant of basketball.

Time for those key words, read the sentence and pause the video, deciding which keywords should go in the missing space.

Let's read it together.

Adding the -ent or -ant suffix to the end of the word sometimes changes the meaning of the root word into a noun.

But how are we going to decide whether to add -ant or -ent to our words? Choosing the right word is not easy as they both sound the same in many words, and are often on stress.

Let's look at the patterns we looked at last lesson.

Starting with our suffix -ent.

What do you notice about these two words? This is a reminder about the soft c sound soft like our pillow.

Accent transluscent sounds a lot more like an s following a soft c is this suffix -ent.

How about these two words? Pause the video and tell me what you notice.

This time the suffix -ant has been added, and what's different about the c sound and this word.

It's a hard c.

Vacant, significant hard sounds are followed by the -ant suffix usually.

Tell me whether it's a hard or a soft c in this word, magnificent soft, applicant hard.

Patterns for -ent.

What's similar about these two words? They two has soft sounds, but this time the soft g said, diligent, urgent.

And what's different about these two? The hard g sound said extravagant, arrogant, hard or soft g? Elegant hard, intelligent, soft.

Okay point about correct spelling of excellent it's -ent.

Reminder of the spelling rule, double the consonant, Pointed the right spelling for different -ent.

And this one you can actually hear quite easily different, precedent, which spelling is correct? Ent and finally variant pointed at the correct spelling -ant.

So a reminder we use -ent following a? And we use -ant following a? Ent follows a soft c and g sound, ant follows a hard c and g sound.

Well done if you remember those.

Time for a spending strategy, this one's pulled spot a word within a word.

Can you spot a word within the word assistant assist, remembering that to assist is a verb, but an assistant is a word for a person who is doing that to help like the man in this picture.

Why is this strategy useful? Well, most importantly, it uses what we already know.

If I already know how to spell assist, then I don't need got to remember the new suffix.

It helps you visualise the word and make connections to versions of the words you've seen before.

That's how they go together for magnificent.

Can you spot any words within here.

Well, to magnify is the verb to see something clearer and make it bigger.

Well though, this time, the word magnify has been slightly altered, how? Can you point at the letter that's changed? The y has changed to an I.

This is a common rule for our suffixes that we looked at earlier in the lesson.

Why don't you have a go with some of the words from our spelling list, spot words, inside of word for servant and urgent and pause the video here to complete that.

Spelling test time.

I want you to get a new piece of paper so that you can't see any practise during the test and label it one to 10.

Pause the video here to complete that.

I'm going to read out each word one by one, and I want you to write it down and pause the video.

This is so that you double check the spelling of each word carefully.

You can always take your time, take a deep breath.

If you feel like you need a minute.

Number one, urgent.

Number two, magnificent.

Number three, servant.

Number four, subsequent.

Number five, recent.

Number six, significant.

Number seven, arrogant.

Number eight, assistant.

Number nine, diligent.

Number 10, restaurant.

Pause the video here and double check each word before moving on.

Okay if you can get a different coloured pen so that we can mark our work.

I'm going to say each correct spelling and sound it out.

Letter by letter.

Number one, urgent, U-R-G-E-N-T.

Number two, magnificent, M-A-G-N-I-F-I-C-E-N-T.

Number three servant, S-E-R-V-A-N-T.

Number four, subsequent, S-U-B-S-E-Q-U-E-N-T.

Number five, recent, R-E-C-E-N-T.

Number six significant, S-I-G-N-I-F-I-C-A-N-T.

Number seven, arrogant, A-R-R-O-G-A-N-T.

Number eight, assistant A-S-S-I-S-T-A-N-T.

Number nine, diligent, D-I-L-I-G-E-N-T.

Number 10, restaurant, R-E-S-T-A-U-R-A-N-T.

Pause the video here and take your time to back through any letters you spelled incorrectly please edit so that you've got the correct spelling written down.

And notice maybe there's a pattern that you found more difficult than the others.

Excellent work look, what you've managed to achieve.

Hopefully now you're more confident with spelling rules for all suffixes, and you're more confident with soft sounds and hard sounds and how they affect our decision to add a -ent suffix, or -ant suffix to the end of words.

You've learned a new spelling strategy.

Can you remind me what that was? Spotting a word within a word.

I hope you continue to use this strategy when you're given future spellings to learn.

And finally you completed your test.

Don't worry if there are a few words that you struggled with.

You have time now to go and practise those words and look carefully at the spelling rules you may have missed? Congratulations, you've completed your lesson today well done.
