Hello.
My name is Mrs. Tipping, and I'm really looking forward to learning with you today all about significant rulers from the past.
And we're going to explore the question what can those rulers, their stories, what can they tell us? So shall we get started? Let's go.
By the end of today's lesson, you will be able to describe how the Romans allowed Prasutagus and Boudica to rule the east of England.
Before we start, I would like to introduce you to some keywords.
We'll be using these keywords during the lesson, so it might be a good idea to write these words down.
The keywords we'll be using today are Ancient Romans, tribe, loyal, government.
I'm going to say those again, and I'd like you to repeat them after me.
Ancient Romans.
Tribe.
Loyal.
Government.
Good job.
Now, let's think in more detail about what these keywords mean.
Here are each of the definitions for our keywords.
So the Ancient Romans were a group of people from Italy that took over lots of land across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
A tribe is a group of people, families or villages that share the same language, customs and ancestors.
To be loyal means to give or show strong support.
And a government is a group of leaders who make laws and decisions for a country.
Pause the video here to make a note of these keywords, and when you're ready to continue, press play.
These are the learning cycles that we will be working through together in today's lesson.
The Romans and the tribes of Britain.
Who were Boudica and Prasutagus? In the first learning cycle, we will explore the Romans and the tribes of Britain.
In 43 CE, a group of people called the Ancient Romans came to Britain.
They forced the people living there, the tribes of Britain, to follow their rules.
A tribe is a group of people, families or villages that share the same language, customs and ancestors.
So there were a few different tribes in Britain, and the Ancient Romans wanted them to follow their rules.
The Roman Emperor Claudius reached out to the tribes in Britain, and he gave them a choice to either fight or make peace with the Ancient Romans and do as they said.
Have a look at that photo there.
That's a bust of Claudius, Emperor Claudius.
I wonder what choice the tribes wanted to make? Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.
What two choices were the tribes given when the Ancient Romans arrived in Britain? To fight, to make peace, to run away, to hide.
Pause the video here and have a moment to think, and then press play when you're ready to continue.
What did you think? If you said the two choices given to the tribes were to fight or to make peace with the Ancient Romans, that's absolutely right.
Well done! Now, many of the tribes did not want to be ruled by the Ancient Romans.
So the Ancient Romans tried to keep the peace and prevent fighting in many ways.
First they began to give the local tribe leaders different jobs in the Roman government.
I wonder why they did that? Hmm, maybe to make those tribe leaders to feel included.
Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding here.
Fill in the missing words to complete this sentence.
The Ancient Romans gave local tribe leaders different, in the Roman.
So what is missing from those two gaps? Pause the video here and have a quick discussion with your learning partner, and press play when you're ready to continue.
How did you get on? Shall we take a look? So the Ancient Romans gave local tribe leaders different jobs in the Roman government.
And could you remember what a government was? That's right, a government is a group of leaders who make laws and decisions for a country.
So after the Ancient Romans gave local tribe leaders different jobs in the Roman government, they also allowed the tribal leaders to keep the land that they owned if they promised to be loyal.
Can you remember what it means to be loyal? It means to give or show strong support.
You can see there on that map the area of one of the British tribes, the Iceni tribe.
That's where they lived.
Now, finally the Ancient Roman armies also promised to protect the loyal tribes from any other tribes that may attack them.
So it seems like a pretty good deal.
Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.
The Ancient Romans promised to protect the loyal tribes.
Is that true or false? Pause the video here and give yourself a moment to think, and press play when you're ready to continue.
What did you think? If you said that was true, you're absolutely right.
Well done! Now, looking at these two statements, which one would help to justify your answer? They would help any other tribes that attacked them.
They would stop any other tribes that attacked them.
Pause the video here and have a discussion with your learning partner.
Which of these two statements would help to justify your answer, and press play when you're ready to continue.
What did you think? If you said they would stop any other tribes that attacked them, you're absolutely right.
Well done! This brings us to our first learning task.
I'd like you to describe to your learning partner how the Ancient Romans tried to make peace with the tribes of Britain.
Try to use these words, jobs, government, loyal, land, protect.
Pause the video here and make sure you give yourself enough time to describe to your learning partner how the Ancient Romans tried to make peace with the tribes of Britain, and press play when you're ready to continue.
How did that go? Shall we take a look at an example? So your answers might have included the Ancient Romans tried to make peace with the tribes by giving local tribe leaders different jobs in the Roman government.
If they were loyal to the Ancient Romans, the tribes were allowed to keep the land they owned.
The Ancient Roman armies also promised to protect the loyal tribes from any other tribes that tried to attack them.
Well done for completing that learning task.
This brings us to the second part of our lesson.
We're going to explore who Boudica and Prasutagus were.
King Prasutagus ruled a British Celtic tribe called the Iceni tribe, alongside his wife Boudica.
We saw the Iceni tribe on the map before, and we see that area where the tribe lived.
Let's take a moment to pause here and just check our understanding.
Which tribe did Prasutagus and Boudica rule? Roman, Iceni, Britain.
Pause the video here and give yourself a moment to think, and press play when you're ready to continue.
What did you think? If you said that they ruled the Iceni tribe, you're absolutely right.
Well done! Now, Prasutagus and Boudica got married around 45 CE, and they lived with their daughters in the east of England.
Take a look there at that illustration of Boudica.
The Ancient Romans, they allowed King Prasutagus to keep ruling his land as long as he followed Roman rules and laws.
Hmm, I wonder, do you think that was a good deal? What do you think? Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding here.
Can you complete this sentence? If King Prasutagus followed the Roman rules and laws, he could what? Pause the video here and have a discussion with your learning partner to complete this sentence, and press play when you're ready to continue.
What did you think? If you said if King Prasutagus followed the Roman rules and laws, he could keep ruling his land, then you're absolutely right.
Well done! King Prasutagus agreed, and he made sure that when he died, his kingdom would go to his daughters and the Roman emperor, so they would share it.
When King Prasutagus died, around 59 CE, his wife, Boudica, became the queen.
However, the Roman Emperor Nero did not want to share power with Boudica and wanted to take control of all of her lands.
Emperor Nero was well-known as a very cruel leader.
He became emperor in 54 CE, age just 16 years old.
So Boudica was left with little choice but to defend her land and protect her daughters from Emperor Nero.
Have a look at that illustration there.
You can see Boudica standing up and her daughters behind her in the carriage.
I wonder what Boudica is going to do next? Let's take a moment to pause and check our understanding.
The Ancient Romans let Prasutagus and Boudica rule their land.
Is that true or false? Hmm, what do you think? Well, that is true.
Now, looking at these two statements, which of these would help to justify your answer? Emperor Nero wanted to share power with Boudica when Prasutagus died.
Emperor Nero did not want to share power when Prasutagus died.
Pause the video here and have a discussion with your learning partner.
Which of these two statements would help to justify your answer, and press play when you're ready to continue.
What did you think? If you said that Emperor Nero did not want to share power when Prasutagus died, you're absolutely right.
Well done! This brings us to our final learning task.
I'd like you to complete the following sentences.
King Prasutagus and Boudica ruled.
King Prasutagus and Boudica lived with.
If he followed Roman rules and laws, King Prasutagus.
When Prasutagus died, Emperor Nero.
So pause the video here and give yourself enough time.
Make sure you have a pen and some paper, and complete the following sentences.
And press play when you're ready to continue.
How did that go? Shall we take a look at some answers? So your answers could include King Prasutagus and Boudica ruled the Iceni tribe.
King Prasutagus and Boudica lived with their two daughters.
If he followed Roman rules and laws, King Prasutagus could keep ruling his land.
When Prasutagus died, Emperor Nero did not want to share power with Boudica.
Well done if you're able to complete those sentences.
And well done for completing that learning task.
Before we finish this lesson, let's summarise what we've learned about Boudica and Prasutagus.
By 43 CE, Britain was ruled over by a group of people called the Ancient Romans.
The Ancient Romans came to Britain and forced the tribes there to do what they said.
King Prasutagus ruled the Iceni tribe with his wife Boudica.
They lived with their daughters in the east of England.
The Ancient Romans allowed some kings, like Prasutagus, to keep on ruling their land if they followed Roman rules and laws.
When Prasutagus died, Boudica became queen, but the Roman Emperor Nero wanted to take control of all of her lands.
Thank you for joining me in this lesson today.
I hope to see you in the next one.
See you next time.
