Hello, my name's Mrs. Jones.

And I'm pleased you decided to join this lesson today.

In this lesson, we will look at how people communicate digitally, which means using technology on different devices to send and receive messages.

This could be from a phone or a computer.

And messages can be sent in different ways.

And we're going to look at these different ways, like typing a message from one person to another.

And this could be sending a message to say, "I'm on my way home.

" So let's get started and think about ways people communicate digitally and the different devices that could be used.

Welcome to today's lesson.

Today's lesson is called Communicating Digitally, from the unit Message Makers.

And by the end of this lesson, you'll be able to recognize how people communicate digitally on different devices.

There are three keywords to today's lesson.

Device.

Device is an object that uses computer technology to work.

It stores and processes information.

Digital.

Digital means using technology.

And voice.

Voice is sounds we make when we speak.

There are two sections to today's lesson.

The first is recognize ways people communicate digitally, and the second, identify devices used for digital communication.

So let's start with recognize ways people communicate digitally.

Digital communication is when messages are sent using technology.

These messages are sent using digital devices.

That could be a tablet, computer, or a phone.

Laura says, "My mom sends my dad a message on her phone when we are out.

" It's a good example of using a digital device.

And Laura's mom uses her phone to send a message to the dad to say that they are out.

Digital communication uses devices to send messages from one person to another.

The message can travel from one place to another.

For example, a message can be sent from home to school.

You can see here showing going from a phone, the message, which looks like the envelope there, being sent from one device to the other, to the computer.

And when it goes from one place to another, it could be over a long distance, outside of the building, outside the country.

It could be sent a long way.

Digital messages can be sent in different ways.

Some use writing, some use pictures, and some use sound.

Let's have a quick check.

Which of these show digital communication?

Is it a, talking to a friend next to you, b, drawing a picture on paper, c, sending a text message using a device, or d, waving to someone?

Pause the video and think which one of those shows digital communication.

Is it a, b, c, or d?

And then we'll go through the answer.

Let's check your answer.

The answer was c.

Sending a text message using a device is an example of digital communication.

Well done if you got that correct.

Some digital messages use sound instead of writing.

This is called a voice message.

Voice messages can be listened to later.

Andeep shows a good example here.

"I send a voice message so I don't have to write as much down.

" It's a really good way 'cause we can talk into the device, it will record it, and send it as a message for the other person to listen to it through their device.

Pictures can also be sent using digital devices.

A picture can help show ideas or information.

Laura gives a good example.

"I send pictures to show what I am doing.

And it might be that you send a picture of you playing in the park from one parent to another parent, or from one family to another family, or from friends to friends.

It's a good way to show what is happening and share those pictures.

Let's have a quick check.

True or false?

Sending a message using a device is digital communication.

Pause the video and think if that is true or false.

Is sending a message using a device digital communication?

Pause the video and then we'll go through the answer.

Let's check your answer.

The answer was true.

Sending a message using a device is digital communication.

Well done if you got that correct.

A message is digital when it is sent using a device and technology.

Talking face-to-face does not use technology.

Let's do the activity.

Which of these examples shows digital communication?

Explain how you know.

So we have a, sending a message, b, talking to a teacher face-to-face, c, sending a picture, d, drawing on paper.

So explain how you know which of those examples are digital communication.

And the second part of this task is to think of one example of digital communication you have seen or used.

And write your idea down.

So you'll need your worksheet for that part.

Pause the video, and have a go at task, and use both parts, one and two, and then we'll go through the answer.

Let's have a look at the answers.

So the first part of the task was: which of these examples showed digital communication?

And explain how you know.

So the first one was sending a message, and that is digital communication.

The second was talking to a teacher face-to-face, and that was not digital communication.

The third was sending a picture, and that was digital communication.

And the fourth was drawing on paper, and that's not digital communication.

How do we know?

Got to think about whether it's using a device.

So a and c, where it's sending a message or a picture, was using technology.

It was using a digital device to be able to send it from one device to another.

The second part was think of one example of digital communication you have seen or used.

And some examples of when you might have used digital communication might have been sending a message home, sending a picture to family, or listening to a voice message.

And I'm sure you came up with some great examples.

Well done if you've got those sections correct.

Let's move to the second part of today's lesson, identify devices used for digital communication.

Digital communication needs devices to send messages.

Different devices can be used for digital communication.

Some common devices include phones, tablets, and computers.

Digital messages are sent between two or more devices.

One device sends the message and another device receives the message.

Digital devices can be sent between different types of device.

The devices do not need to be the same.

For example, a phone can send a message to a tablet, or a tablet can send a message to a computer.

And on this picture here, you can see a phone sending a message to a computer.

They do not have to be the same.

The messages can be sent from different devices to another.

Different devices can be used for digital communication.

Digital messages can be sent as writing, pictures, or voice.

These message types can be sent using different digital devices.

Remember, that's the phone, tablet, or computer.

Some digital messages are seen straight away.

And this happens when the other person is using their device.

And on that picture there, you can see there's a little number one, because we get an alert on the device to tell us there's a new message.

And if we're looking at it, we're gonna see that straight away.

If not, it will stay there until we're using the device and then we can see it when we're on it.

Let's have a quick check.

What is needed to send a digital message?

Is it a, paper, b, a device, c, crayons, or d, a pen?

Pause the video and think which of those is needed to send a digital message.

Is it a, b, c, or d?

And then we'll go through the answer.

Let's check your answer.

The answer was b, a device.

Well done if you got that correct.

Some digital messages are seen later.

This happens when the other person is not using their device, the device is turned off, or it does not have a signal.

When the device is turned back on, the message can be seen.

Digital communication does not always happen at the same time for everyone.

Messages can be sent now and seen later.

Andeep says, "Sometimes I see messages later if my tablet has been turned off.

" That's a really good example, because until the tablet is turned on, those messages can't be seen.

They're not there for him to see.

Let's have a quick check.

True or false?

A digital message is always seen straight away.

Pause the video and think if that is true or false.

Is a digital message seen straight away?

Then we'll check your answer.

Let's check your answer.

The answer was false.

Why is that false?

Pause the video.

Can you explain why it is false?

Then we'll check your answer.

Let's check your answer.

A digital message might be seen later if the other device is turned off, has no signal, or is not being checked.

Well done if you got that correct.

Digital devices allow messages to be sent and received at different times.

You can see here during the day and during the night.

Andeep says, "I think digital messages are always better than talking to someone.

" Laura says, "Sometimes digital messages are helpful, but talking face-to-face can be better when people are together and want to reply straight away.

" I think I agree with Laura there.

It is better to talk face-to-face if you want an answer straight away.

Digital messages are helpful, but sometimes face-to-face is better.

Let's do the activity.

So the first part of the activity, which of these are digital devices?

And we have phone, pencil, computer, book, tablet, or crayon.

So you need to circle which one you think is a digital device.

The second part, which of these are digital message types?

And we've got jumping, writing, sleeping, voice, pictures, or running.

And you'll need to circle which ones you think are digital message types.

And the third part of that task is name one message type you could send using a digital device.

Pause the video, use your worksheet, have a go at those activities, and then we'll go through the answers.

Let's check your answers.

So the first part was which of these are digital devices?

And the answers were phone, computer, and tablet.

Well done if you've got those.

Which of these are digital message types was the second part.

And the answer was writing, voice, and pictures.

Well done if you got that.

And the third part was name one message type you could send using a digital device.

And you could send a message using voice, writing, or pictures using a digital device.

Well done if you got those correct.

In summary, digital communication uses two or more devices, such as a phone, tablet, or computer.

Messages can be sent in different ways, including voice, writing, or pictures.

Some messages are seen straight away, while others are seen later.

This can depend on whether a device is switched on or has signal.

Well done for completing this lesson, Communicating Digitally.
