Hello, everyone, welcome to today's lesson.
My name is Mrs. Jenkins.
Today's lesson is called Creating Online Safety Guidelines, and it is taken from the unit, the Digital Discovery Squad.
Let's get started.
In today's lesson, our learning outcome is, I can create clear guidelines for being safe online.
In our lesson today, we have two keywords.
Those words are responsible and guideline.
These words will appear throughout the lesson, so it's really important we know what they mean before we get started.
Responsible is making careful choices and thinking about results.
Guideline is a rule or piece of advice to help people act safely.
In our lesson, Creating Online Safety Guidelines, we have two learning cycles.
Create rules for being safe online and create a set of online safety guidelines.
We're going to begin with create rules for being safe online.
Let's get started.
What activities do you do online?
Sam says, "I watch videos online.
" Lucas says, "I like to play games online with my friends.
" And Alex says, "I go online to complete my maths homework.
" Interesting!
Well done all of you.
An action is something a person does.
Online actions include posting, sharing, clicking on things, and sending messages.
Some online actions are safe.
Others are unsafe.
What does it mean to be responsible about your actions online?
Sam says, "Being responsible means making careful choices and thinking about results.
" Great job, Sam.
Safe online actions include: ignoring messages from people you do not know, using kind words online, keeping personal information private, telling a trusted adult if something feels wrong, and using websites or apps approved by parents or teachers.
An online action is unsafe if it shares personal information publicly, allows unknown people to identify or contact you, involves clicking or responding to unknown content.
Okay, we've got a little check now.
I would like you to identify which of the following online actions are safe or unsafe.
So we have, sharing your password with a friend, telling a teacher if someone sends a message you are not comfortable with, clicking a pop-up that says you won a prize, or playing an online game with your friends.
What do you think?
Have a go.
How did you get on?
I asked you to identify which of the following online actions are safe or unsafe.
You should have, under safe, playing an online game with friends, or telling a teacher if someone sends a message you are not so comfortable with.
Unsafe is clicking a pop-up that says, "You won a prize!
", or sharing your password with a friend.
Great job, everyone.
Personal information is information that can identify a person.
It could help someone find out who you are.
Some personal information should be kept private.
Private means it is not meant to be shared with everyone.
When information is shared online, it can be copied and shared again.
You cannot always control who sees it.
So if Jun sent something to Sam and she sent it on to Izzy, Alex, and Sofia, each of them could send it on again and we would have no control of who can see it.
Risk means the chance that something harmful or unwanted could happen.
Unsafe actions increase risk.
Let's have a little check.
True or false?
When you share information online, you can control who sees it.
What do you think?
Have a go.
How did you get on?
I asked you, true or false.
When you share information online, you can control who sees it.
The answer is false.
And the reason why, you cannot always control who sees information you share online.
When information is shared online, it can be copied and shared again.
Great job, everyone.
Artificial intelligence, or AI, is a type of computer system or application that is trained using examples.
An AI system generates answers, but it does not understand them.
It does not think or feel like a human.
Humans understand meaning, but AI systems just compare patterns and follow rules.
Sam says, "I understand what this means.
" It is up to humans to decide whether an AI application is reliable for a particular task.
Reliable means something that works correctly most of the time.
AI applications are more reliable when: the goal is clearly defined, the task depends on patterns, and the AI application uses correct and complete data.
AI applications are less reliable when the task requires understanding feelings, involves personal values, or needs human judgment.
We are going to move on to task A now.
I would like you to create a rule for each of the following areas of being safe online.
So we have protecting privacy and personal information, safe and unsafe online actions.
What is AI?
When should AI applications be trusted?
And checking outputs from AI applications.
To note, you may already have some rules in your logbook.
Have a go.
How did you get on?
I asked you to create a rule for each of the following areas of being safe online.
Protecting privacy and personal information, safe and unsafe online actions.
What is AI?
When should AI applications be trusted?
And checking outputs from AI applications.
And some of these rules might already be in your logbook.
So protecting privacy and personal information, a rule could be, always keep information private.
Safe and unsafe online actions could be, before clicking, posting, or replying, think about who will see it.
For what is AI, AI follows rules, it does not think or feel like a human.
And for when should AI applications be trusted, remember that AI can make mistakes.
Checking outputs from AI applications, to make sure the output from an AI application is correct, check it with another source.
Great job, everyone.
Going to move on to learning cycle two now, Create a set of online safety guidelines.
A guideline is a rule or piece of advice to help people act safely.
For example, a guideline for crossing a road is always look both ways before crossing.
Online safety means protecting your personal information and privacy, being careful about who you talk to, making safe and responsible choices online.
In the next stage of the lesson, you are going to create a set of guidelines that can be shared with your friends and family on how to stay safe online and when using AI tools.
Before you do that, you need to collect your last badge.
So for this check-in, I would like you to complete this rule.
When using online apps and websites, always, have a go.
So I said, before we could do that, we needed to collect our last badge.
I need you to complete this rule.
When using online apps and websites, always, so one way the rule could be completed is when using online apps and websites, always think carefully about your actions.
Do not share personal information and check the answers are valid.
And well done.
That will get us our safety guide rule.
Desktop publishing is using software to help you make documents such as cards, posters, or certificates.
Desktop means the computer or workspace you will be using and publishing means arranging text and images to produce something.
If you can, use desktop publishing software to create your guidelines.
In Canva, you can start with a template or from create a new document.
If you can, use desktop publishing software to create your guidelines, watch these video clips to help you.
We have adding text, adding images, and using templates and AI tools.
Let's watch the videos.
<v Instructor>I'm going to demonstrate</v> how we can add text in Canva, although you can use any other desktop publishing software.
On the left-hand side, we have the menu.
I'm going to select the text option from the menu.
I'm then going to select add a text box.
This will add a text box with some sample text.
I can remove this text and add my own text.
Once I've got that text, I can then edit it so I can change the font.
There are lots of different fonts that you can choose from, so have a look carefully and see what will match your document.
I can also change the text size.
I can change the position of the text by clicking and dragging it to a different location on the page.
And I can also change the text color.
I'm going to show you how to add an image to a document in Canva, although you can use any other desktop publishing software.
On the left-hand menu, I'm going to select the elements tab.
I can then search for an element to add to my document.
So I'm going to search for computer.
And it comes up with some suggestions, so computer icon, computer screen.
I'm going to choose computer icon for this example.
I then get some examples, so I've got some graphics, I've got some photos, I've got some 3D images, and some videos.
I'm going to choose a graphic in this case, so I'm just going to scroll along until I see a graphic that I like.
And I think I'm gonna go for this one here.
So it's inserted the image into the center of my page.
I can click and drag and move the image around.
I can also use the handles on the corner of the image to resize it so make it smaller or make it bigger.
Some images also allow me to change the color of the image.
Canva has some template features and some AI features that may help you with your poster design.
So for example, if I'm creating an E safety poster, I can search and see if there are any templates that I might be able to use.
So I can see here, there are some safety posters, and one of these might be useful.
If I select one of these posters, it will put it across to the page and then allow me to edit individual elements.
So if there are bits that aren't quite right, I can change it and amend it to suit my needs.
Canva also has an AI tool where we can generate our own designs.
So it's using the prompt that I put at the top and it's creating a design for me.
Okay, we can see that it's created the design and when I click on it, it moves it across.
As with all AI tools, the more specific that I get, the more likely I am to have an output that will be useful.
So I'm going to change my prompt here.
So from E safety poster, I'm going to say E safety poster with some tips for how to stay safe online.
And I'm gonna regenerate the design.
So this time, it's added some tips to my document so I can move that one across and then I might decide to start editing the poster.
If you don't like the suggestion, remember, you can always create your own from scratch.
<v ->Let's have another check-in here.
</v> What is the main purpose of desktop publishing software?
a, to write and edit code.
b, to create and design documents with text and images, or c, to browse the internet.
What do you think?
Have a go.
How did you get on?
I asked you, what is the main purpose of desktop publishing software?
a, to write and edit code.
b, to create and design documents with text and images, or c, to browse the internet.
The answer is b.
The main purpose of desktop publishing software is to create and design documents with text and images.
Great job.
We're going to move on to task B now.
If you can, use desktop publishing software to create your guidelines.
Remember to include the rules from task A and any information you have recorded in your digital discovery squad log book.
Have a go.
How did you get on?
I asked you, if you can, use desktop publishing software to create your guidelines.
Remember to include the rules from task A and any information you've recorded in your digital discovery squad log book.
So Jacob says, "I created my guidelines using desktop publishing software.
I used a template to help me and included my rules from my logbook.
" So we have got, keep personal information private, never share your full name, address, school name, or phone number online.
This should keep you safe from strangers.
Use AI tools and apps responsibly.
AI systems follow rules.
It does not think or behave like a human.
Remember, AI systems can make mistakes and outputs should be checked.
And think first before you click, post, or reply, think carefully about who will see it and what impact it may have.
Great job, Jacob.
Well done!
Your digital discovery squad member has earned their final badge.
Safety guide.
You can create clear guidelines for being safe and responsible online.
Add your safety guide badge, and your character's rule to your log book.
Well done.
You have worked really hard in today's lesson.
Let's summarize what we have learned.
Guidelines help people to be safe online.
Safe online use includes protecting personal information.
Clear rules help others make safe and responsible choices.
