Hi everyone.
My name is Mrs. Jenkins.
I can't wait to learn with you today.
Welcome to today's lesson, digital devices for different activities from the unit computer networks.
In the lesson, we were going to be able to explain how digital devices can be used for different activities.
In the lesson, we'll be having some key words.
These will appear throughout the lesson and it's really useful if we know what they mean before we get started.
So today, we are going to have digital device, which is an object that uses computer technology to work.
It stores or processes information.
That is digital device.
Then we have non-digital tool, an object that does not need computer technology to work.
So a non-digital tool.
Keep an eye out for these throughout the lesson.
In today's lesson, digital devices for different activities, we have two learning cycles.
The first is explore the benefits of digital devices.
The second is identify digital and non-digital devices.
Let's begin with explore the benefits of digital devices.
Jacob asks, "What do digital devices do?" Digital devices help us to complete tasks.
These can be simple or more complex tasks.
Do you enjoy any of these activities? Writing a story, playing music, talking to a friend, taking a photo, or painting a picture.
Can you think of any digital devices that could help with these activities? When writing a story, you might use a pen and paper, or a computer, or tablet.
What are the differences between using a computer to write and using pens and paper? Here are some of the differences between writing on paper and on a computer.
When we write on paper, we use a pencil or a pen to write, we rub out mistakes with a rubber, we underline using a ruler, and we write on paper.
When we use a computer, we type using a keyboard, we press backspace or undo to make changes, we change textile with colour or bold, and we can save our writing as a file.
Sofia says, "But what are the benefits of using a computer to write?" Typing can be quicker.
You can use backspace to correct mistakes quickly.
Any changes you make are invisible.
You can change how the text looks with a button click.
And use spell check to help with spelling.
True or false? You can only write a story using pen and paper.
How did you get on? I asked you true or false? You can only write a story using pen and paper.
The answer is false.
You can use a computer too.
Great job.
When painting, you could use paints and brushes or a painting programme on a tablet or computer.
Here are some of the differences between using real paint or a computer to paint.
When you paint, you use paint and brushes on paper, you mix colours yourself, to fix mistakes, you may use a new page or paint over the old picture, the picture is kept on paper.
For a computer, you use tools in a painting app, you pick colours from a colour menu, you undo or erase mistakes, and you save your artwork digitally.
Sofia asks us, "What are the benefits of using a computer to paint?" Good question.
You can use a wide range of colours.
You can try out different brush styles.
You can undo mistakes very easily and fix errors quickly.
You don't need to wait for the paint to dry.
And it can be less messy than physical paints.
Which of these is a benefit of using a digital device to make art? A, you can mix real paint colours.
B, you can undo mistakes quickly.
Or C, you can make lots of mess.
Have a go.
How did you get on? I asked you, which of these is a benefit of using a digital device to make art? A, you can mix real paint colours.
B, you can undo mistakes quickly.
Or C, you can make lots of mess.
The answer is B.
You can undo mistakes quickly when using a digital device to create art.
When reading, you could use a physical book or an ebook on a tablet or e-reader.
Here are some of the differences between reading a book or reading an ebook.
When reading a book, you can turn real pages, read with a natural light or a lamp, but carrying lots of books can be heavy, the text size stays the same.
When you read with an ebook, you tap or swipe to turn pages, you read on a screen even in the dark, you can carry many books on one device, you can change your text size.
Sofia says, "What are the benefits of reading on an e-reader?" Great question, Sofia.
You can carry lots of books on one device.
You can change the font size to make text easier to read.
You can read in the dark with a screen light.
With listening to music, you can listen to music on a digital device such as a phone or a tablet.
You can also hear music played live on instruments at concerts.
So listening to music: non-digital, music is played live by people, you hear it in real time, each performance is different, you need instruments or tickets.
Digital, music is played through speakers, you can pause, rewind, or skip songs, the music stays the same every time, you need a music app or files.
Digital devices often make tasks faster to complete, easier to fix or change, neater to present, and easy to share with others.
It is still important to make good choices and use devices carefully.
For task A, I would like you to complete the table to show what digital device you could use and how it could be helpful.
So we have four activities.
We have writing, painting, reading a book, and listening to music.
And the columns are, what digital device could you use and how could it help? Have a go.
How did you get on? I asked you to complete the table to show what digital device you could use and how it could be helpful for writing, painting, reading a book, and listening to music.
Let's have a look at the answers.
With writing, you could use a laptop or computer.
It could help because it is easier to correct mistakes.
When painting, you could use a laptop or tablet, and it could help because it is a lot less messy.
When reading a book, you could use an e-reader or tablet, and it could help because it can hold many books at once.
Listening to music, you could use an app on your phone, you could choose any song.
Great job, everyone.
We are going to move on to learning cycle two now: identify digital and non-digital devices.
Some tasks can be done in different ways using a digital device or a non-digital tool.
Digital devices can help people do things faster or more easily.
There are also times when non-digital tools are better.
Digital devices can be more expensive than non-digital tools.
Would you choose a digital device or a non-digital tool to do these things? Writing a story, playing music, talking to a friend, taking a photo, or painting a picture.
Can you name a digital way to do each of these tasks? Writing a story, playing music, talking to a friend, taking a photo, or painting a picture.
And now can you name a non-digital way to do each task? Writing a story, playing music, talking to a friend, taking a photo, or painting a picture.
Digital devices are not always better.
It can depend on: what you are trying to do, where you are, what tools you have, and what do you find easy.
You might find it easier to draw with a real pencil instead of a mouse or finger.
You might be somewhere with no power, so reading a paper book might be easier than an ebook.
Digital devices often cost a lot more money than the non-digital alternative.
True or false? You always get better results if you use a computer.
Have a go.
How did you get on? I asked you, true or false? You always get better results if you use a computer.
The answer is false.
It depends on the task and what suits you best.
So let's have a little look at some of the tasks that we've discussed and what the digital and non-digital versions of them are.
So writing a story, the digital would be a word processor programme, the non-digital would be using a pen and paper.
The task, drawing a picture, the digital, you might use a paint programme, the non-digital, you might use pencil and paper.
The task, listening to music, you might use a music app, or the non-digital, be listening to live music.
The task, reading, the digital version, you might read an ebook, the non-digital is a paper book.
And the task, chatting to a friend, the digital version might be video calling or messaging apps, the non-digital would be talking in person to someone.
Which of these is a benefit of using a pencil and paper? A, you can save your work digitally.
B, you don't need electricity.
Or C, you can use the undo button.
Have a go.
How did you get on? I asked you, which of these is a benefit of using a pencil and paper? A, you can save your work digitally.
B, you don't need electricity.
Or C, you can use the undo button.
The answer is B, you don't need electricity.
Great job.
For task B, you're gonna choose one task that can be done in both a digital and non-digital way and answer these questions.
What digital device could you use? What non-digital tool could you use? And which one would you choose and why? Some suggested tasks you could choose: writing a story, reading, drawing a picture, or listening to music.
Have a go.
How did you get on? I asked you to choose one task that can be done in a both a digital and a non digital way, and answer the questions: what digital device could you use? What non-digital tool could you use? Which one would you choose and why? Some suggested tasks were: writing a story, reading, drawing a picture, or listening to music.
For writing a story, the digital device you could use is a laptop or tablet with a word processor, non-digital would be pen and paper.
So which one would I choose? I would choose the computer because I can type fast and correct mistakes easily.
Or someone might have chosen to say, "I would choose pen and paper because I find typing takes me a long time." As we said before, each of these are a personal preference, so different people might have a different opinion.
For reading, what digital device could you use? An ebook or a tablet, a non-digital device could be a physical book.
Which one would you choose and why? I would choose an ebook because it can hold many books at once.
Or someone might have said, "I would choose a physical book because I like turning the pages." Drawing a picture, what digital device could you use? A paint programme on a computer or tablet.
What non-digital tool could you use? Pens and paper.
Which one would you choose and why? I would choose a tablet because it is less messy and easy to undo mistakes.
Or someone might have said, "I would choose pens and paper because I find it easier to draw with my hands." Listening to music, what digital device could you use? A music app on phone.
What non-digital tool could you use? Could go to a concert.
Which would you choose and why? I would choose a music app because I can listen to any song I choose, or I would choose going to a concert because I like the experience of listening to live music.
Great job, everyone.
You've done really well here.
You have worked so hard today.
Let's summarise our learning.
Digital devices for different activities.
Digital devices help us to complete tasks.
These can be simple or more complex tasks.
There are many benefits to using digital devices such as saving time, being more accurate, and being easier to share with others.
Non-digital tools can also be useful depending on the time and place.
This could include finding it easier to draw with a pen and paper than on a screen.
They're often a lot cheaper than digital devices.
Both digital and non-digital have benefits and can be used for different purposes.
Great job everyone.
You've worked so hard today.
I hope to learn with you again soon.
