Hello, I'm Mr. Ballam.
Thanks for choosing this lesson.
This lesson is all about eating in and eating out.
Let's get started.
So what are we going to learn or be able to do by the end of today's lesson? Well, you're going to be discussing the food that you eat in and out of the home, and there are some keywords that I want you to think about as we're going through today's lesson.
The first one is home, and that's the place where you live.
The second word is occasion, and that's an event or a time when something takes place.
And the third keyword is meals, and that's the food eaten at a particular time or occasion.
So for example, breakfast, lunch, or an evening meal.
So let's get started with the first part of the lesson and it's called Where, who and occasion.
Now the food and drink that we eat depend on a number of factors, and that might be where we are, it could be who we are with, and also the occasion.
So let's look at each of these in turn, shall we? So where we are can affect what we eat and drink.
So for example, what we have in and out of the home can be different.
So for example, we can have breakfast at home or perhaps breakfast at a cafe.
And like Jacob saying here, "How might the food be different?" What do you think? What would be the differences of you having breakfast at home compared to you having breakfast out at a cafe or a restaurant? Well, it might be things like it's different from usual.
So it might be a treat.
You might have different types of foods, for example, not the same thing.
Or it might be different types of foods that you have as well.
So that would be really nice, wouldn't it too? Or it might be a limited selection.
So at home, you might have similar things each day, but if you ate out, there might be greater variety of things that you could choose from.
Or perhaps it might be less or more healthy.
So that's really important too, isn't it? And also it could cost more.
So it might cost more if you eat out the home than compared to eating in the home.
Let's look at another example together, shall we? So you might have lunch at home or perhaps lunch at school.
Now how might the food be different here? What do you think? Think about what you've had for lunch at home compared to what your lunch at school might be.
And you might have a packed lunch or have the meals that's provided at school, but these probably will be different to the lunches that you might have at home.
So what would be the difference, do you think? Hmm.
Well, yeah, at school, you might have set meals if you don't have a packed lunch.
So that would be different.
Where at home, there might be a bit more variety, for example, a bit more choice.
Or the choice might be very limited perhaps, so you can only pick between two or three different things.
Or perhaps there's less freedom to choose.
That might be important, that might be a difference.
Or how about you can make what you want for lunch so you can think about the foods that you like and make it.
How about a meal at home compared to a meal in a restaurant? So how might these be different? What do you think? Well, there are lots of different answers you could come up with there.
But there could be things like, at home, it might be more a limited choice and perhaps there's more variety if you eat out.
'Cause you might have different meals perhaps from different cuisines and tastes from around the world.
Or perhaps there are family favourites.
So at home, there might be a favourite in your family, perhaps your grandparents made it or perhaps it's from a country where your parents originally came from.
And it's traditional.
It's a real good family favourite that you enjoy, all of you enjoy at home.
But it might cost more perhaps, for example, if you eat out compared to eating at home.
So that might be really important too.
Or perhaps it's less or more tasty.
Perhaps you feel that the food at home is boring or perhaps the food you eat out isn't very nice.
So it could work both ways.
And it might be less healthy perhaps because maybe at home you can watch what you put in, but that eating in a restaurant or a cafe perhaps the food might be fried or deep fried, for example, so it's less healthy.
So the food we have at home compared to what we eat out might be different for lots of different reasons.
So another example might be a snacks at home.
So snacks at home could be grapes, for example, which are delicious.
Or perhaps if we're out and about, we might be at a cinema and perhaps we might have popcorn at a cinema.
But again, how might the food be different from a snack at home compared to being in a cinema here? What do you think? Well, yes, perhaps the snacks at home could be healthier, for example, so we could have fresh fruits and vegetables at home.
Perhaps a choice might be a bit more limited, just like we're saying here.
So a limited choice at the cinema.
And perhaps it might be food that's less healthy for us too.
It could cost more too.
So foods at home, we could have more of them, lots of fruits and vegetables, but perhaps in the cinema, they're more expensive 'cause we're out.
And they could be larger sizes too.
So actually we don't need to eat so much.
So we need to think about the portion that we have.
So let's just see if you've been listening, shall we? So how might food eating outside the home be different? A, B, or C? So yes, it might be unfamiliar to you.
Anything else? Yeah, sometimes it might cost more too.
But great work, and the unfamiliar, well, it's great to try new foods from around the world, different cuisines and different traditions and cultures.
Brilliant work, well done to you.
Now another thing that might affect what we eat in and out the home is who we are with.
So for example, this might be your parents or carers, for example.
And just like Sofia is saying here, "I eat what my parents cook for me." So who you're with can change what you eat.
Or perhaps with your grandparents, and Aisha is here saying, "They like to cook food from their culture." So the foods that they like, they might cook for you.
So depends on who you're with, you might eat different foods.
So we might eat food that's traditional in our family and our culture, our preferences, what we like and dislike, the money we have, our religion, and who we live with can affect what we eat.
So there are lots of different factors that influence what we eat, where we are and who we're with.
A few more examples might be your auntie that you're with and perhaps that she's a vegetarian, for example.
So we eat what she has.
So you might not be a vegetarian, but she cooks vegetarian meals, which are absolutely delicious too.
Or perhaps you might be with your friends, and you like to choose then the foods that your friends like because you're a good friend and you all want to be together and have the same things.
So a quick question for you here.
Does the food that you have change depending who you are with? What about compared to your parents or carers to your friends? Would you choose different things? I'm sure some of you might choose different foods depending on who you are with.
Perhaps the food's just provided to you or perhaps you've got a bit more freedom to choose.
But again, who we're with can influence what we eat.
So let's have a quick check, shall we again? So true or false? So who we are with does not affect what we eat and drink.
True or false? That's right.
That's false, isn't it? Remember what we've just been through.
And why is that? Well, who we are with often does affect what we eat and drink.
So for example, we might eat what our parents cook or might pick the same foods as our friends too.
Brilliant, well done.
And thirdly, the occasion is also a factor that decides what we eat and what we drink too.
So for example, what we have at breakfast might change or perhaps at lunch or perhaps our evening meal.
So we might eat different things depending on the time of the day, for example.
Or it might be different types of snacks during the day too.
So what might we eat and drink on these different occasions here? Can you tell me? What might you have for breakfast? Well, there are lots of different options, aren't there? So one of my favourites is porridge with sliced banana, for example, and an orange juice too.
And how about you? What's your favourite breakfast? And how about your friends in the class? Do they have the same thing for breakfast or something different? And lunch? What sort of things do you have for lunch? Well, often I might have a soup, for example, and some bread roll and maybe a yoghourt too.
What do you have? The same or something different? An evening meal.
Again that will depend on who you are with, for example, or perhaps the occasion too.
And lastly, you might have different snacks, perhaps you might have healthier snacks or less healthy if you are out, for example, like at the cinema.
Also, the food and drinks offered on different occasions might change too.
So for example, at a barbecue, the foods there might be quite different compared to, for example, having something at breakfast time.
So just think about the foods that you might have at a barbecue or perhaps at a birthday party.
Those would be quite different, wouldn't they, compared to a barbecue and a birthday.
Or how about a festival or perhaps an event at a park, for example, where there are different food stalls? So the foods there might be different again.
Or how about a picnic in the park? Again, all these different occasions, the food that's presented to us or offered to us will be different.
So how does the occasion affect what food we have? What do you think? Can you tell me? Well, let's have a quick example together, shall we? So if it's a barbecue, we might have things that easily cook on the barbecue.
Often that might be beef or veggie burgers, for example.
Or perhaps some delicious fish and vegetable kebabs.
A birthday party, we might want things as easy to eat, you know, sociable, fun too.
Perhaps at a festival, again, things are easier to eat or we might try foods from around the world too.
And at a picnic, again, we want things that are easy to carry and tasty to eat too.
And perhaps we can use our fingers or a fork.
So keep it nice and simple.
So again, where we are and the occasion can affect the food that we're offered and what we eat and drink.
So let's have another quick check, shall we? So which of these would be a special occasion? A, B, C, D? Brilliant.
Yeah, a festival.
That would be a special occasion.
Is there anything else? Yes, birthday, of course.
A birthday is a special occasion.
So these are special occasions, not just everyday things.
And sometimes where we are and who we're with and the occasion can play a role in determining what we eat and drink.
So where, let's say we're at home, for example, and who we're with, our family, and the occasion, well, let's say it's breakfast time.
So what we have here will depend.
So it might depend on what food is already at home, our likes and dislikes, and what we typically have for breakfast at home.
And that will depend on who you live with, where you are, how you've been brought up, for example, too.
So what might we eat and drink? Why? Well, what might you have at home with your family for breakfast? Ah, there's some great ideas there.
So often, it might be things that you typically have every day, and things that are easy to share, may be quick 'cause you've got to get to school and your parents or carers have got to get to work too.
So breakfast at home can be different.
Well, how about this one, where we are, we're at a park, and we're with some friends and we're having a picnic.
So these are different.
So where we are, who we are with, and the occasion.
So what we have here will depend on things like we want it easy to carry and eat.
We might want to check what our friends do and don't eat too.
And for example, we also need to check for any allergies too, because we might not know what some of our friends are allergic to.
So what, again, might we eat or drink, and why? Well, there are lots of different types of foods that we might have for picnics, but again, they need to be easy to carry, easy to eat.
And we need to make sure that we know what our friends like and also if they've got any allergies too.
So let's have a quick task, shall we? So what I want you to do is to list and explain the food and drink Jacob might have on these different occasions.
So let's just quickly go through them.
So where, he's at home, he's with his brothers, and the occasion is breakfast.
So what food and drink might Jacob have, and why? And then the next one, he's in the park with his family having a picnic.
So what food and drink would you choose for Jacob here, and why? And lastly, he's gone to the cinema, he is with his friends and it's a birthday, so he's gone to the cinema for his birthday with his friends.
So what might they all eat and drink there? And why do you think? So, good luck, be creative, think about all the different things we've talked about today, about where you are, who you are with, and the occasion.
And I'm sure you'll do brilliantly.
Pause the video and we'll come back very shortly to see how you got on.
Great.
Oh, I'm sure you did fantastic.
Let's have a look at some example answers together, shall we? So for example, at home, you could have had things like, well, perhaps he has cereal and milk with banana and a juice.
And why? Well, we always has these.
It's quick, easy, tasty and healthy too.
At the park, well, they've had sandwiches, pasta salad, and fruit kebabs, mm.
So they're really easy to carry in full pots and bowls, and they're easy to eat too.
The kebabs, well, you can just pick them up and eat them.
Or perhaps the pasta, you just need a simple spoon.
And why? Again, yes, they're easy to carry and eat.
So that's really important in determining what food they have.
And lastly, at the cinema, well, they've had pizza, smoothies, and nachos too.
So this was the only food that was available.
It was a very limited choice, and all the friends had the same thing.
Because they all wanted to eat together and be sociable and have fun too.
Brilliant, well done.
That's great work.
So now let's move on to the second part of the lesson, which is, Meals for occasions and people.
So meals can be planned for different occasions and people.
So for example, this might include a breakfast for parents or perhaps a summer picnic for a family or a party for friends, or a Chinese New Year lunch for the family.
So there are different occasions and people that we can plan meals for.
And the food served for meals will change depending on the occasion, for example.
So we need to think about the food and drinks that you usually serve, well, a traditional, for example.
We need to think about the way that the food is presented too.
So it might be a picnic, a buffet, perhaps in a bowl with chopsticks being used or perhaps any traditions that are linked to the occasion too.
Or where it is, perhaps you've got to take the food to a park or perhaps you can just eat at home, so it's a bit easier too.
And Aisha here is saying that her family celebrates Eid.
So there's certain foods that she'll have to celebrate that festival.
So let's have a quick check, shall we? So which of these shows are buffet? A, B, or C? Yes, that's right.
It's B, isn't it? You can see that's some nice easy food to pick up, a buffet food.
The food served for meals also changes, depending on the people.
So we need to know the food they do and do not eat.
We need to know their likes or dislikes, their preferences.
We also need to know about any allergies that they might have.
So for example, Sam here is saying, "I'm a vegan, so I don't need food from animals." So when we're planning the meals, we need to take into account the people, what they like, and the foods they eat and don't eat.
So let's just have a quick check, shall we? So when planning a meal for different people, you can always serve the food you like.
True or false? Yes.
That's false, isn't it? And why is that? Well, the needs of the people need to be taken into consideration.
So for example, some people might not eat certain foods due to allergies or perhaps being a vegan or vegetarian.
Brilliant, well done.
And we also need to consider other factors too.
So for example, we might need to think about healthy eating, for example.
And we can use the Eatwell Guide to help us plan the food too.
We also need to think about the eating style.
So Lucas here is saying, "Let's use chopsticks!" because they've got some lovely sushi presented.
Or perhaps some money, so they might say, "I'm on a budget, so I'm gonna cook the food at home, not buy it." So let's have another task, shall we? So I want you to pick one occasion from column A and one person from column B.
And I want you to plan a meal for that occasion and that person.
There'll be lots of things that you can think of.
So just go down and pick one from A, so it could be breakfast or party or festival.
And then pick a person.
And I want you to invent a meal that you could cook for them.
And I'm sure they would find it really tasty.
So good luck to you and pause the video, and we'll come back and look at a couple examples together very soon.
Okay, how do you get on? I bet you did really well, didn't you? Let's look at a couple of examples together.
So here I've picked breakfast and then I've also picked friends.
So what sorts of things could I make? Well, I like cheese and tomato toasties.
I think they're absolutely delicious.
Some can be a bit different for my friends for breakfast too.
And we're also gonna have some fresh fruit and yoghourt.
And I'm gonna have some home baked muffins.
Hmm, there's quite a lot here, but it's gonna be delicious.
And we're gonna have some apple juice too.
I'm also thinking about healthy eating too, a five a day.
How about another example? Yes, I've chosen picnic, for example, with my family.
So they might have things like sandwiches with lots of different fillings or perhaps tuna and sweetcorn quiches.
They're really nice, they're little mini ones.
They're great to eat.
Or perhaps coleslaw and also slices of fruit loaf.
So I've come up with some simple things that are delicious but also easy to eat too.
And I'm sure you've come up with some great ideas.
Brilliant work.
Well done.
So let's move on to task two now, shall we? And what I want you to do is to list three occasions when you have eaten in or out your home.
And I want you to explain why you had the food that you did.
So come up with three things.
So food that you've eaten in the home and out the home and why you've had that food.
So have a good think, write down your answers, and we'll come back very soon to see how you've got on.
Good luck.
Great.
Well, how do you get on? I bet you did really well.
Have you thought about the different food you've eaten in the home and out the home, and why you've done it? Well, let's look at some examples, shall we, together now.
So it could be, for example, you put breakfast at home, and why? Well, it's things you have every day.
So it's easy, it's quick, and it's what I like too.
Or perhaps it's lunch at school and it's easy to have.
I don't have to carry in my packed lunch, for example.
I can eat with my friends and there's a little bit of choice too.
And lastly, it could be a meal at a restaurant.
So it's a real treat, it's a celebration.
And as pizzas are my favourite, it's great to go to a pizzeria.
It's fun and tasty too.
So there are lots of occasions when you eat in the home and out the home, and there are lots of different reasons why we do that.
Brilliant work.
Well done.
Well, I hope you really enjoyed today's lesson all about eating in and out the home.
And remember, it's all about where we are, who we're with, and the occasion, and they all play a factor in determining what we eat and drink.
Let's have a quick summary of what we've learned today, shall we? Well, the first one is remember the food and drinks we eat depend on a number of factors, such as where we are, who we're with, and the occasion.
Secondly, the food that we have in and out the home can be different.
So for example, breakfast at home compared to what we might have in a cafe.
Thirdly, we might choose different foods depending on who we're with.
So for example, we might eat different foods if we're with our parents and carers compared to when we're with our friends, for example.
Fourthly, well, the occasion can determine what we eat, so for example, the food that we might have lunch at school will be different to a party that we might have too.
And fifthly, meals can be planned for different occasions and people.
So we take into account different occasions and the needs of different people.
Well, that's brilliant work.
Well done to you.
It is quite a complicated thing, but you've done fantastic today.
I'm really proud of you, and I hope you come back again very soon for another cooking and nutrition lesson with me.
Thanks a lot.
Bye.
