Hi, everybody! My name is Mr. Palekar, and welcome back to our music lessons.

This is lesson number two, exploring four beats in a bar.

Today, we are going to recap, we are going to go back and see if we can remember our chant from last lesson.

And we are going to spend a few minutes playing a very special and fun game.

Then we are going to explore and look at music, which has four beats in every bar.

Now, don't worry if you don't know that already, because that's what we're going to take a look at.

Then we're going to look at exploring the 'strong beat' in the pulse, the strong beat in the pulse.

Again, don't worry if you don't know what that is, we're going to take a look at that today.

And finally, we are going to learn a new piece of music called Crazy Glue, Crazy Glue, hmm.

I'll let that sit in the back of your mind today.

For this lesson, you will need some headphones.

Again, if you don't have any headphones, don't worry.

Find a place where you can concentrate and you won't be disturbed.

You will need a pencil and paper.

If you would like to make notes, if it will help you remember.

And finally you will need your hands as well as yourself.

So your hands and your selves.

Let's get started with our chant from last week, Get with the Flow.

My turn first.

I'm going to sing it all the way through.

Have a listen first.

Hey, you, get with the flow.

Touch the sky then reach down low.

Clap your hands to the beat.

Click, clap and off we go.

Really good listening that time, okay, let's try it again.

But this time we're going to do it, my turn and then your turn, my turn first, and then you're going to copy it and say it back to me.

Here we go.

Ready to chant the words, my turn first, one, two, off I go.

Hey, you, get with the flow.

Touch the sky then reach down low.

Clap your hands to the beat.

Click, clap, then off we go.

Really well remembered.

If you need to use the words on the screen, you can use the words on the screen.

Here we go, one more time.

One, two, off I go.

Hey, you, get with the flow.

Touch the sky, then reach down low.

Clap your hands to the beat.

Click, clap, and off we go.

Super, we're going to try that one more time, but actually let's put in our, click, clap, and off we go.

Remember, that our click and our clap land on the same time as we say the words, but our off we go, our off we go, we slide our hands all the way through the words, off we go, off we go.

One more time, off we go.

So click, clap and off we go.

From the top, my turn first.

One, two, off we go.

Hey, you, get with the flow.

Touch the sky then reach down low.

Clap your hands to the beat.

Click, clap, and off we go! Super job.

Okay, now we've got that, we need to add it in our 'clap our hands to the beat.

' Try it, one, two, three, here we go! Clap our hands to the beat! Very good.

Let's see if we can put that into our song.

Remember, clap your hands to the beat.

Click, clap and off we go.

Let's try it from the top, a little bit slower.

My turn first, one, two, and off I go.

Hey, you, get with the flow.

Touch the sky then reach down low.

Clap your hands to the beat.

Click, clap and off we go.

Super job.

Hmm.

Can you remember our first line, what we do? Yeah, brilliant, so with our, Hey, you, get with the flow.

We clap the rhythm, we clap the rhythm.

Hey, you, get with the flow.

My turn first and then you can try it after.

Hey, you, get with the flow.

Good, let's try that one more time.

Hey, you, get with the flow.

Brilliant, let's put that into our chant.

Ready? One, two, and off I go.

Hey, you, get with the flow.

Ooh, what did I forget to do? I forgot to clap the rhythm, really well done if you stopped me right there.

Ready? One, two, and off I go.

Hey, you, get with the flow.

Touch the sky then reach down low.

Clap your hands to the beat.

click, clap and off we go.

Super job, but there is one more line in our chant, there is one more line, which is 'touch the sky then reach down low'.

Can you remember how that goes? Yes, it does, it goes, touch the sky, then reach down low.

Can we try it? Ready? Here we go.

Touch the sky then reach down low, One more time, here we go.

Touch the sky then reach down low.

Let's see if we can put it all the way through our chant with our actions, are you ready? Here we go.

I've got my hands ready.

Have you got your hands ready? My turn, one, two, off I go.

Hey, you, get with the flow.

Touch the sky then reach down low.

Clap your hands to the beat.

Click, clap and off we go.

Hey, you, get with the flow.

Touch the sky then reach down low.

Clap your chest to the beat.

Click, clap and off we go.

Pause the video now, and see if you can work on the chant 'Get with the Flow' all the way through with the actions.

If you want to try this with a friend or a family member, you can join with them to chant it all the way through and teach them the actions.

When you're ready to resume, click the play button.

That's right, it is time to play our game, Don't Clap This One Back.

Now, you should remember from last lesson that there is a forbidden rhythm, forbidden, meaning not to clap the rhythm.

And it sounds like this.

Don't, clap, this one back.

I'm going to say it again, but this time I'm going to say it a lot softer so you can hear the rhythm, the forbidden rhythm.

Don't clap this one back.

I'm going to say it even softer, listen to the rhythm, listen to my hands.

Last time, I'm not going to say it at all, I'm going to say it in my head, not out loud.

Listen to the rhythm.

If you hear that rhythm, you cannot clap.

All other rhythms, you must clap, but if you hear that rhythm, don't clap.

Remember, I get a point, if I trick you into clapping the forbidden rhythm, if I trick you into clapping 'don't clap this one back'.

You get a point, if when I clap 'don't clap this one back', you don't clap it back.

Are you ready? Here we go.

Starting just with the hands, my turn, and then your turn.

Okay.

If you clapped there, unfortunately I've got the point, hopefully you won that game.

Okay, let's try it one more time, here we go.

That was our forbidden rhythm, hopefully you didn't clap there, be really honest guys.

Make sure that you are scoring really, really correctly.

Did I get the point or did you? Okay, let's make it a bit trickier.

Now I'm going to use my chest as well, and I might use some clicks as well, so it might be, that the forbidden, that, that rhythm that you can't clap might sound like this.

It might sound like this or it could be a combination.

It could be one or two or three sounds, I might go.

Did you hear it? I'll do that again.

Be very, very careful.

Let's see who's going to get the point.

My turn then your turn, have you got your hands ready? Good.

That was our forbidden rhythm, don't clap this one back.

I think I probably got the point there.

Okay, another one, we'll see if we make it a little bit trickier for all of you who are listening super, super, super well.

Okay, here we go.

Just a point I want to make, if you're thinking, 'Oh no, I can't click', don't worry, you can tap your shoulders very quickly, and that sounds very similar to a click, here we go.

My turn.

That was our rhythm not to clap.

Okay, really well done, okay, I'm going to make it super hard, super difficult one, guys, super difficult one.

Okay, all right, alright, right, okay, have you got your hands ready? Hands ready, okay, we're going.

That was our forbidden rhythm, that was the rhythm not to clap.

Well done, if you noticed that, that was a bit of a tricky one.

Pause the video now to play the game with a partner now.

You can play with a family member or a friend, or if you would like to, rewind 20 seconds and let's play again one more time.

I wonder who will get the points.

When you're ready to resume, click play, and let's continue.

Let's take a look at time signatures.

Now, time signatures involves thinking about music like your bedroom.

Your bedroom needs to be tidied from time to time, and that means that we can put things, we can put your items in boxes.

Now, in music, we sort of do the same thing.

We put music into boxes, which are called bars.

Let's take a look at these bars, we have our first bar, second bar, third bar and fourth bar.

And we've put these boxes, these bars, next to each other.

So that we know, which box is which, let's put a line between them so it's really easy to see, which is the first box and the second box and the third box and the fourth box.

This line, we'll call a bar line.

So we've got our bars and we have our bar lines, which separate, keep them separate from each other.

In a piece of music that uses four beats in a bar, that means we can have lots of music in that bar with lots of notes, lots of sounds in that bar, but they can only be four beats for music.

Can you count four beats with me? Ready? One two, off we go, one, two, three, four, one more time, ready, here we go.

One, two, three, four.

Lovely.

Well, let's take a look, so we have our four beats for our first bar, but I know that in this piece of music, that it has four beats in every single bar.

So how would that look? Let's take a look.

Okay.

Right, that makes sense.

So we have four beats for every single bar.

Let's pat it on our chest or you can click, clap, or you can pat on your knees.

Ready? One, two, off we go.

One, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four.

Good.

The bar line doesn't mean to pause and to stop, it shouldn't be one, two, three, four, stop, have a think, make a cup of tea, come back and carry on with a one, two, three, four.

No, it shouldn't be that.

It needs to be continuous, like our pulse.

It goes all the way through the piece of music.

Let's try it one more time.

I'm going to change that, I'm going to Just click.

One, two, together, have you got your fingers ready or your hands? One, two, off we go.

One, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, one two, three, four.

Brilliant, now that means we count our beats to four, and then we start back at number one for our next bar.

Very good.

Let's listen to this piece of music and see if you can remember how to clap to the pulse.

If you can, make sure that you can count the pulse as well.

Are we ready? Here we go.

Now there is a way that instead of writing all of our heartbeats across the piece of music that we can make it really, really simple.

What could we do to make sure that we know that every single bar will have four beats for it? Four beats in a bar and every bar? Well, let's take away all the heartbeats and then maybe just put a number four at the beginning.

That way, we know every single bar has four beats.

Pause the video now and see if you can try clapping to the pulse.

But this time, making sure that you are counting out loud.

Our beats are four beats in a bar with our one, two, three, four, all the way through.

If you would like to rewind 20 seconds, and we can do it together.

When you're ready to continue, click the play button.

Strong Beats.

Now that we know how to find the pulse in a piece of music, and we know how many beats there are in a bar, let's take a look at the strong beats.

Now there are strong beats and weaker beats in a piece of music.

You need to know that beat number one, the very first beat of every bar is our strongest beat.

We're going to call this the downbeat.

We're going to call this the downbeat, downbeat.

Have you said it? Downbeat, good.

That downbeat, we are going to clap stronger, a harder clap.

One.

Let's try it.

We're going to go, one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, we're going to do it four times.

Ready? With your hands, ready? Here we go.

One, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, one two, three, four.

Let's quickly recap.

The first beat in a bar is called the downbeat.

This downbeat is a strong beat and our strong beat, we clap harder.

That way, we know every single time where the first beat is of every bar in a piece of music.

Let's try to clap the downbeat with our strong clap and our weaker beats, two, three, and four along with some pieces of music.

Make sure that your hands are ready.

Hands at the ready.

Great job, remember that, is a big one on the downbeat, one.

Here's our next song.

Great job, well done.

Pause the video now, and you can try clapping along with the pulse.

There is a bonus song coming up now.

Lovely job.

Pause the video now and rewind so that you can listen to the bonus track.

Clap the pulse of the music and count the beats.

One, two, three, four, at the same time.

Remember to clap the downbeat, the first beat of every bar, a little bit stronger.

When you're ready to resume, click play.

It's time for song of the day, a brand new piece called Crazy Glue.

We're going to listen to the song first.

If you think you can, clap along to the pulse.

Here's Josh Woodward on guitar and many other instruments, singing Crazy Glue.

♪ There's no gravity that sucked me in your orbit ♪ ♪ There's no magnet that was in your heart ♪ ♪ The one restriction was the friction that was keeping us ♪ ♪ A little too far apart ♪ ♪ Why fight it, I was secretly delighted ♪ ♪ I gave chase but then I let you win ♪ ♪ You felt lovely when you loved me like a fool ♪ ♪ But now I can't let go of your skin ♪ ♪ You know that I never knew ♪ ♪ That you are crazy glue, my darling ♪ ♪ And I'm stuck to you ♪ ♪ I am cosy and I don't going to wiggle loose ♪ ♪ You're honey like a finger in the beehive ♪ ♪ The bees are buzzing in a tizzy fit ♪ ♪ They're stinging but I'm singing like a fool ♪ ♪ 'cause you're as sweet as a banana split ♪ ♪ You're sticky like a hippie in the summer ♪ ♪ You're like syrup in the slushie tray ♪ ♪ One touch of you and I will never leave ♪ ♪ 'cause I believe that I can't get away ♪ ♪ You know that I never knew ♪ ♪ That you are crazy glue, my darling ♪ ♪ And I'm stuck to you ♪ ♪ I am cosy and I don't going to wiggle loose ♪ ♪ I don't want to wiggle loose ♪ ♪ Hold onto me ♪ ♪ And hand in hand we'll follow ♪ ♪ Hold onto me ♪ ♪ As if you had a choice ♪ ♪ I never knew that you are crazy glue, my darling ♪ ♪ And I'm stuck to you ♪ ♪ I am cosy and I don't want to wiggle loose ♪ ♪ I don't want to wiggle loose ♪ Were you able to clap to the pulse? I really like this tune a lot.

Let's see if we can do it together.

You ready? If you can, see if you can clap the downbeat, that's the first beat of every bar with a big strong, one.

The other beats two, three, and four, pat on your chest.

You'll have noticed there's a four at the beginning of this piece of music.

That means there are four beats in a bar.

One, two, three, four.

Let's take a listen.

Let's stop just there.

Good, really well done.

That is our pulse, and we have clapped that downbeat with a strong clap, and then done our slightly weaker beats, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, on our chest as well.

Fantastic.

Let's learn a little bit of the song.

We're going to be focusing on the chorus of our song and the chorus of the song is the part of the song that happens more than once.

Let's do it together.

It sounds like this.

Two, three, four.

I never knew that you are crazy glue, my darling, and I'm stuck to you, I am cosy and I don't want to wiggle loose.

I never knew that you are crazy glue, my darling and I'm stuck to you, I am cosy and I don't want to wiggle loose.

Let's try it, my turn, and then your turn.

Here we go, my turn first, one, two, three, four, one.

I never knew that you are crazy glue, my darling.

Try it, ready? One, two, three, four, one.

I never knew you, that you are crazy glue, my darling.

Very good job, I'm going to carry on, but starting from the top, listen first, my turn.

One, two, three, four, one.

I never knew, that you are crazy glue, my darling.

and I'm stuck to you, I am cosy and I don't want to wiggle loose.

Let's break down that last couple of lines.

And I'm stuck to you, two, three, four, one, and I'm.

Good.

The last part goes, I am cosy and I.

Let's try that, I am cosy and I, one, two, three, four, one.

I am cosy and I, one more time.

Ready? One, two, three, four, one.

I am cosy and I.

Last time, one, two, three, four, one.

I am cosy and I, one, two, three, four, one.

I am cosy and I.

Good, last few words.

Don't want to wiggle loose, your turn.

Don't want to wiggle loose.

Good, my turn, one, two, three, four, one.

I am cosy and I don't want to wiggle loose.

Try it, ready? A one, two, three, four, one, I am cosy and I don't want to wiggle loose.

Lovely job, let's see if we can sing it from the very, very top of our song.

We'll take it a little bit slower.

One, two, three, four, one.

I never knew that you are crazy glue, my darling, and I'm stuck to you, I am cosy and I don't want to wiggle loose.

And again, I never knew that you are crazy glue, my darling, and I'm stuck to you, I am cosy and I don't want to wiggle loose.

Very good.

Can we try it while patting the beat on your chest, ready? One, two, three, four, one.

I never knew that you are crazy glue, my darling, and I'm stuck to you, I am cosy and I don't want to wiggle loose.

Very good, really lovely job.

Now, we are going to add in our strong downbeat with a clap, one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, all the way through our piece.

It will go like this, one, two, three, four, one.

Woo, I made a mistake, let's try that again.

It goes one, two, three, four, one.

I never knew that you are crazy glue, my darling, and I'm stuck to you, I am cosy and I don't want to wiggle loose.

Let's try it together, let's get that beat going first of all, that pulse.

Ready? One, two, off we go.

One, two, three, four, ready, off we go.

One, I never knew that you are crazy glue, my darling.

And I'm stuck to you.

I am cosy and I don't want to wiggle loose.

Try again, here we go.

I never knew that you are crazy glue, my darling.

And I'm stuck to you.

I am cosy and I don't want to wiggle loose.

Really great job.

It's tricky at first, to make sure that your pulse is always continuing, it doesn't stop, it doesn't speed up and it doesn't slow down, it must be continuous and even, that means it must always stay the same speed.

Really great job.

Pause the video now so you can practise singing Crazy Glue, clapping and patting the four beats, and remember that the strong clap is for the first beat, the downbeat of every bar.

When you're ready to resume, click play.

Great job today, because from today's lesson, you can now chant 'Get with the Flow' with the actions.

You can recognise music that has four beats in a bar.

You can clap the strong beat, which is the downbeat, and you can also sing our brand new song, 'Crazy Glue' while clapping the pulse, counting every beat of the bar.

A huge well done in your lesson today.

I think you did an absolutely great job.
