My name is Mr. Palekar and welcome back to music.

If you just heard some music being played, don't worry.

That is all part of our lesson today.

Let's take a look at what we're going to do.

Now in this lesson, we are going to recap all Oliver Twist from last lesson, which has six beats in a bar.

We are going to explore music with five beats in a bar and we're going to clap to music, which has five beats in a bar.

We are also going to learn a new piece, which has five beats in a bar.

Now for this lesson, you will need some headphones, if you have some, if you don't, don't worry.

Just make sure that you are somewhere quiet, where you won't be disturbed and where you can concentrate.

You'll need a pencil and some paper.

If you would like to write anything down and make some notes and you'll need your hands, your bodies and your voices.

Let's get started with Oliver Twist.

Okay, so let's add in our body percussion, so that we can keep a track of the pulse in the music.

We're going to have our bars and they are separated, by our bar lines.

A bar and then a bar line.

A bar and then a bar line.

We also got our six beats in every single bar.

And you'll notice that the first beat is a little bit bigger because we are going to pat a little bit harder on that first beat, which is also called our downbeat.

One, two, three, four, five six.

We're going to put our body percussion in.

You can see that our clap, which is on beat number four, has a little circle around it.

And that's because we are also going to clap a little bit harder on that beat because that way we can separate our bar into three beats at a time.

So one, two, three, four, five, six.

So one, two, three, all together.

Four, five, six all together.

Our fourth beat is strong, but it's not as strong as our down beat, which is always the strongest beat you.

Here we go.

Let's see if we can try pat clicking and clapping it all the way through.

Remember we're starting on our chest for the first beat.

Click, click for the second and third beat and clapping on the fourth beat and then click, click four, five and six.

Nice and even.

We also know that we don't have to click our beats two, three, and beats five and six.

We can count it with just our pat and our clap.

But I will challenge you to see if he can put those clicks in on the other beats as well.

Well done, now we know that there are six beats in every single bar, so we don't need to put all of those heartbeats above every single bar.

We can get rid of those and we can put a number six at the very start of our music, which tells us that every bar is going to have six beats.

Time signatures, five beats in a bar.

When we think about time signatures, we've done it, Two beats in the bar, three beats in the bar, four beats in the bar and six beats in a bar.

But today we are looking at five beats in a bar, which is maybe a little bit less common than the other time signatures.

With five beats in a bar, we still going to have our first beat as our downbeat.

So one, two, three, four, five.

And I would like to see if you can tap your head on number one.

Good, when we have five beats, we can divide it in different ways.

So we can have two beats plus three beats, which is still five beats together, but we can think of it in a slightly different way.

So we put emphasis, we put a stronger beat in different places.

Let me show you how.

And the then for our three beats, we have one, two, three.

Together, they make five beats, but when we count it, we can go, one, two, one, two, three.

And you will have noticed that I'm clapping a little bit harder on the downbeat for the very first beat and also the group of three.

So that's one way of thinking about five beats in a bar, but the other way is if we switch those two numbers around.

So instead of having two plus three, we have three plus two.

We just means that we are changing where we put our strong beats.

So we're going to have one, two, three, plus one, two.

Our K, you might have already realised is going to be our knees.
