Hi friends my name is Ms. Molnar and I'm going to be doing some learning with you today.

Oh is that someone at the door? I wonder who it could be.

Oh it's Harold the Hedgehog.

Say hi to everyone Harold.

Well, if you don't know Harold, he's very very good at his maths.

So Harold is going to be helping us today to explore the concept of zero.

So what you're going to need for this lesson is some number cards labelled from zero to six.

You're also going to need a pencil and a piece of paper.

As well as some objects to do some counting with.

So I've got some cubes to count with today, but you might use some other small objects that you have at home.

Maybe you're even going to use some dry pasta pieces, but make sure you ask your parent or carer first.

Now pause the video, go and grab the items you need and a quiet space to learn.

And when you're ready, let's begin.

All right, we're going to start off by doing some counting together.

So I've got those number cards face down on the table for me.

Harold is going to choose me one of those cards and I'm going to have to either clap or make a tapping noise like that on my table to represent the same number.

Are you ready to play? Okay, choose me a number card Harold.

I wonder what number he's going to choose me first.

Here we go.

Ready? Three taps for the number three.

Can you make a clapping or tapping noise to show number three as well? Have a go.

Well done.

Okay, let's do another one.

All right Harold's going to choose another one for me.

Here we go.

Ready? Five taps for the number five.

Can you have a go at clapping or tapping out the number five? Great job everyone.

That was really good.

All right.

Harold.

Okay, Harold thinks that actually it's time for you to have a go now.

So Harold's going to get another number card.

And we would like you to clap or tap out this number here.

Okay, we're going to start our new learning now.

Let's take a look at the picture that's up on the screen.

How many people are sitting on the bench? That's right.

If you said two, you're right.

There are two people sitting on the bench.

How many roses are in the pot beside the bench? That's right, there's three red roses in the pot beside the bench.

All right, ready for my next question? How many cars are in the picture? Harold looks a bit confused.

Harold says there aren't any cars in the picture.

He says there are none.

Is that what you said? We could use the word none to represent how many cars are in the image.

I say, you say.

None.

Well done.

We could also say the word nothing.

We can't represent any of the cars because there's nothing.

There are no cars.

I say, you say.

Nothing.

Well done.

Harold thinks that there is a number to represent nothing.

Do you know what it is? If you said zero, you are right.

Zero is a number that we can use to represent nothing.

I say, you say.

Zero.

Can you say it in a whisper voice? Zero.

Can you say it in a superhero voice? Zero.

Can you say it in a mouse voice? Zero.

Well done everyone.

I wonder if there's a way to write zero as a number.

Do you know how to write it? This is the zero number block.

It kind of looks like a really big hoop.

So let's practise writing it together.

Get your writing finger ready everyone.

So we can start at the top.

We can go down and around, up the hoop and join at the top.

There we go.

Can you try that three times in the air? Well done.

Now we can also practise it on our hand.

So I can start at the top again, go down, around, up.

And loop at the top.

Try that three times.

Well done.

All right, now I'm going to show us how we can write it down on a piece of paper.

So when we write the number zero with our pen or pencil, we can start again at the top.

Remember it's going to be that loop we practised it.

So I can start at the top, go down and around, up, and join the loop at the top.

Just like that.

Now you can have a go as well with a pencil and a piece of paper.

See if you can write that three times.

Let's go back to this picture now.

I'm going to think of what else there could be zero of, or none of, in this picture.

Let's think.

Oh Harold's got an idea.

Harold says there are zero bicycles in the picture.

Or there are no bicycles in the picture.

All right I'm going to have a go this time.

What are there zero of or none of in the picture? There are zero toys in the picture because I don't see nay toys in the picture.

Now can you pause the video and have a go at this worksheet.

Can you think of any questions where the answer will be zero? What are there zero of in the picture? All right, pause the video and have a go at that now.

Well done everyone at trying to explain what there are zero of in the picture.

Now I want you to take a look at my number line I got here from one to six.

I've also got the number zero here which we've been talking about.

I wonder where should my zero go in the number line.

Should it go before one, or should it come after one? And why? Have a think about that.

If you said zero should come before one, you are right because zero is one less than one.

Fantastic.

Now I think it's time we played a little it of a game.

Harold is going to whisper a number in my ear and I'm going to need to take my counting objects now and I'm going to have to build that number and then match it to my number card.

Okay, are we ready to play everyone? Fantastic.

Harold's going to whisper the first number in my ear.

Four, okay I think I can find that.

All right I have found my number four card.

It's got the number written as four.

It has one, two, three, four dots.

And it's got the word four written.

Now Harold would like me to get my counting objects and count out four of them to match to it.

So I've got one, two, three, and four.

Four cubes to match the number four.

Now can you have a go with your counting objects to count out four of them.

All right, were you able to show the number four as well with your counting objects? Well done everyone.

Now Harold would like to have you have a go now.

He's going to whisper a number in my ear and then he would like you to pause the video, find the matching number card for it, and build it with your counting objects.

Are you ready everyone? Okay.

All right, Harold would like you to find the number three in your number cards and build it with your counting objects.

Pause the video and have a go at that now.

All right, I hope you were able to find the number three.

We've got the number written at the top, the three dots across, and the word three underneath.

And hopefully you've had your objects to count out.

One, two, and three.

Three cubes matches the number three.

Great effort everyone.

All right, for your final task Harold would like you to go and represent all of the numbers on the screen with your counting objects.

Oh, well Harold seemed to have a little bit of a problem.

He said that he didn't know how to represent the number zero using cubes.

I wonder why that was.

Well if you said you couldn't use any cubes to represent zero.

You were so right because remember zero means there are none of them or zero.

So we couldn't use any cubes to represent it.
