Hi everyone, my name is Miss Dhillon and in the lesson today, we will be exploring the following question.

How do Christians express their faith today? This is what the structure of our lesson is going to look like.

We will start with the star words.

Then we will look at who is a Christian.

We will then move on to looking at Christian symbols, in particular, the crucifix.

Then we will move on to looking at Christian dress, Christian art, and finally we'll be recapping the parable of the Good Samaritan, but also how do Christians live by this in today's society? But first of all, please make sure you have all the equipment that you need, ready for the lesson.

Okay, so how do you know who was a Christian? Well, any of these people can be a Christian.

There are Christians all over the world.

The USA has a largest population of Christians, but there are also millions of Christians in other places around the world.

For example, in Mexico, Brazil, the Philippines and parts of Africa, for example, Ethiopia and Nigeria have some very high numbers of Christians.

So hopefully you've learned not to judge a book by its cover.

A Christian doesn't look one particular way, and so it's quite hard to spot who is a Christian.

Today we will be learning about how some Christians might express their faith.

We are only studying some of the ways they might do this.

And remember, everyone is different.

So different Christians might express their faith in slightly different ways.

The most common symbol in Christianity is the crucifix.

The crucifix is a cross with an image of Christ on it.

Have you seen this symbol before? The crucifix is the symbol of Christianity and it reminds everyone of the death and resurrection of Christ.

What is resurrection? Can you remind me? Okay, you should have said resurrection is when Jesus came back to life.

This crucifix serves as a reminder of God's sacrifice of His only son, so that humanity may have salvation.

This means that the humanity, which is people, will have protection from home ruin or loss.

Some Christians might also show their faith by having the crucifix in the homes, or by wearing a crucifix around their neck, or having a beaded crucifix as they pray as you can see in the image.

We are now going to learn a bit about the Christian dress, worshipers who go to the church may dress formerly, which means they might dress formally wearing a suit or smart dress, for example, or smart trousers, or they might even wear casual wear, which is everyday wear for example, jeans and a top.

Christians can wear casual wear as well like jeans and a top.

So it's not always formal, it just depends what kind of church they go to, and what is the norm there.

In a church, a priest might be dressed in special clothing because they have a special job in the church.

They might be wearing an ankle length robe, which are called cassocks, and strips of fabric that goes around their neck and these are called stoles.

And what do we call robes that the priests man wear? Say out loud, good job, cassocks.

Although this may be seen in some churches, in other churches, priests might be wearing formal clothing, for example, a smart suit, or they might be wearing more casual wear.

So it depends on what church people have different opinions about what to wear.

We are now going to look at Christian art.

We would look at two very famous paintings and a famous sculpture.

The last supper, which is the painting that you can see on the screen, is a late 15th century mural painting by Italian artists, Leonardo Da Vinci.

What is going on in this painting? So this is a very popular and influential painting, and we have already seen this in an earlier lesson.

This painting shows the evening before Christ was betrayed by one of his disciples.

Do you remember the name of the disciple that betrayed Jesus? Say aloud, excellent.

It is Judas.

Judas was the disciple that betrayed Jesus.

So on the last supper, Jesus gathered everyone to tell them, that he knew what was coming and he gathered them so they can eat together one final time.

Another famous Christian artwork is the painting completed by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel.

The Sistine Chapel, you can see on the map, is in the Vatican city, which is in Rome, in Italy.

On the right, you can see some of the paintings on the walls and ceilings inside the Sistine Chapel.

Statues are another form of arts that feature predominantly in the Catholic church.

Statue serve as reminders of key events, beliefs and individuals in church history.

Some statues tell stories of events, such as Michelangelo's Pieta statue.

This allows an individual to gain an insight into the biblical accounts.

Now, we have learned about the story of the Good Samaritan already, which is a parable of Jesus, but it's good to recap it.

Firstly, a man was attacked by some robbers.

Excellent.

And they took away his clothing and they beat him and left him half dead.

Who was the first person to spot this man? Good job.

It was the priest and the priest was from the same religion as the man on the ground.

But what did this priest do when you saw the injured man? Fantastic.

Yes, he crossed the road and pretended like he didn't see the man on the floor.

Then who came along after that? Good job, a Levite who was also from the same religion as a man on the ground.

What did he do? Excellent.

He also did the same as a priest and crossed the road and ignore the injured man.

Finally, who came along next? Good job.

The Samaritan.

And the Samaritan was from a different religion and background, but what did the Samaritan do? Fantastic.

So he showed pity on the injured man and he helped the injured man by doing what? What did he do? Yes, he put bandages on him and he put him on a donkey, so that he can take him away to an end.

He then gave the innkeeper some money.

What is that money called? Fantastic, denari.

And he asked the innkeeper to look after the man.

So through this parable, Jesus teaches the importance of loving and being kind to everyone regardless of their religion and background.

The message of the parable of the Good Samaritan is to love thy neighbour and be kind to everyone around you, regardless of their background.

So, if you didn't get love thy neighbour, that's okay, but just a reminder that that is a key message, should love thy neighbour, and by neighbour, it means anyone around you, not literally the neighbour who lives next door to you.

So Christians show their faith in society today by praying.

This can be done in the church or in the home, or while they're out and about.

They might pray for the goodness and happiness of the people around them.

Christians also try to practise their faith by showing people around them, kindness, compassion, which is being there for other people and listening to them and trying to understand them, by sharing, which means if they have something and they can see that someone else doesn't have that thing, then they will share it with that person.

And finally, by forgiving.

So Christians endeavour to forgive others.

Christians also share their faith in society today by helping the needy.

There are many Christian charities that do precisely that.

One example is the Salvation Army, which is a Christian organisation that provides practical help for people in need, by defending those who are vulnerable or abused and fighting against injustice.

The services they provide, are diverse depending on the needs of the communities.

Examples include champ teashop volunteering, community programmes, supporting people who have experienced homelessness and helping them move on with their lives.

You are now going to draw a mind map to write down all the different ways that Christians might practise loving their neighbour and showing kindness to the people around them.

On the screen, you can see in the middle, I have written love thy neighbour, which is a key message of this parable of the Good Samaritan.

And I have drawn out arrows to write down all the different ways that Christians might do this.

So for example, I might write down, sharing as one thing they might do, and giving to other people who might not have the same as them.
