Hello, my name's Mrs. Jones and I'm pleased you decided to join this lesson today.

In this lesson, we will look at the ways people communicate.

We communicate when we send messages to someone.

When we are talking, we are communicating with someone as we share messages back and forth between us.

I'm sharing a message with you now.

You'll have talked to someone today.

What message did you share with them?

What message did they share with you?

There are other ways we can communicate with others and we'll look at drawing, writing and even using a device to send messages.

We're gonna think about how to choose the best way to share a message between people and think about if it is with or without a digital device.

So let's get started and think about different ways we communicate and which way is best in different situations.

Welcome to today's lesson.

Today's lesson is called "How People Communicate" from the unit "Message Makers".

And by the end of this lesson, you'll be able to recognize the different ways people communicate and choose a suitable way to share a message.

There are three keywords to today's lesson.

Message.

Message is something we tell or show someone.

Communicate.

Communicate is to share a message with others.

Digital device.

Digital device is an object that uses computer technology to work.

It stores and processes information.

There are two sections to today's lesson.

The first is recognize different ways people communicate.

And the second is choose suitable ways to communicate.

So let's start with recognize different ways people communicate.

People communicate to share messages with other people.

Messages can convey ideas, information or simple greetings.

Greetings are ways of saying hello and goodbye, and we might want to share lots of ideas and information when we talk or send messages to each other.

Talking is a common way that people communicate when they are together.

People can hear the messages straight away.

Some people may use signs to communicate.

And there are lots of times that we're in the same place as people that we can talk to them and they can hear our messages.

Lucas says, "I talk to my teacher when I need help in class.

" Where else do you talk to people?

Do you talk to friends, family, teachers?

There's lots of ways that we talk to somebody else and share our messages because they can hear our message straight away.

Drawing can help you share ideas or show meaning.

Pictures can be understood without using words.

And Aisha gives a really good example here.

I draw pictures to show my grandma what I did at the weekend.

When did you do a really good drawing that showed somebody something that you did that interested you?

Whether that was something that you had done, maybe something you want to do, but you used it to show what you were thinking?

Let's have a quick check.

True or false?

Talking is a way to communicate.

Pause the video and think.

Is that true or false?

Is talking a way to communicate?

Pause the video and then we'll go through the answer.

Let's check your answer.

The answer was true.

Talking is a way to communicate.

Well done if you got that correct.

You can use writing to share messages that can be read later.

People often use writing when talking is not possible.

Now, Aisha gives a really good example here.

"My brother leaves a note when he has popped to the shop.

" And it might be that her brother couldn't talk to her because she wasn't there, so he left a message to say where he had gone.

When did you last leave a message for somebody?

Did you write it down on paper?

Did you leave it somewhere for them to see?

Sometimes you can send a message using a digital device.

Digital devices help people share messages when they're not together.

And it could be just not in the same room, not in the same house, not in the same country.

Lucas gives an example here.

"My mom sends my dad a message on her phone when we are out.

" Have you seen somebody send a message?

Have you shared a message on a digital device?

This is a good way when you're not with them.

Let's have a quick check.

Which of these is an example of communication?

Is it A, a house, B, a drawing, or C, a chair?

Pause the video and think which of those is an example of communication?

Is it A, B or C?

And then we'll go through the answer.

Let's check your answer.

The answer was B, a drawing.

Well done if you got that correct.

There are many different ways to communicate.

People communicate by talking, drawing, writing and using digital devices.

All of these can be used to share messages.

Let's do the activity.

Look at the pictures.

Which pictures show people communicating?

This is picture number one where it shows Sofia and Aisha talking.

And Sofia says, "Hello, how are you?

" And Aisha says, "I am great.

Shall we play a game?

" So that is picture number one: talking.

Picture number two shows somebody drawing.

Picture number three shows somebody writing.

And picture number four shows somebody sleeping.

Pause the video and think which one of those is communicating, there might be more than one, so which ones are communicating?

Which one isn't?

And then, we'll go through the answer.

Let's check your answers.

So we were looking at those pictures and seeing which ones show people communicating.

Picture number one had those two children talking, and that is communicating.

Well done if you got that one.

Picture two was someone drawing a picture, and that is somebody communicating.

Well done if you got that one.

Picture three shows somebody writing something down, and that is communicating too.

Well done if you got that one.

And number four was somebody sleeping, and that's not communicating.

So the talking, drawing and writing were all pictures of somebody communicating.

But the picture of sleeping was not.

Well done if you got those four correct.

Let's move on to the second part of this lesson.

Choose suitable ways to communicate.

People need to communicate in different situations.

They may choose different ways to share a message.

And here, we've got a picture of using a digital device, talking or writing it down.

Talking works well when people are nearby and can listen.

Messages can be shared and answered quickly.

Aisha says, "I talk to my friends when we are playing together.

" How do you talk to your friends?

Drawing or writing can be useful when someone will look at the message later.

These messages stay even when the person is not there.

When did you last write down a message for somebody else?

Let's have a quick check.

True or false?

The same way of communicating works in every situation.

Pause the video and think is that true or false?

And then, we'll check your answer.

Let's check your answer.

The answer was false.

Why is that false?

Pause the video.

Can you answer why is that false?

Then we'll go through the answer.

Let's have a look at that answer.

Different situations need different ways of communicating.

For example, talking works well when people are together, but writing or using a device can be better when someone is not there.

Well done if you got that correct.

Digital devices can be useful when people are apart.

They help you send messages over a distance.

And you can see different forms of digital device.

Here, we've got a tablet, a laptop and a phone.

People think about what they want to say and where they are before they communicate.

For example, if you want to tell someone something quickly while they are nearby, you might talk.

If you want someone to see it later, you might write or draw it.

Aisha says, "I think about who will see my message before I choose how to share it.

" Really good point there.

You have to think who's gonna see it?

Who do we want to see our message?

Let's have a quick check.

If you want to ask your teacher a question and you are both in the same room, which would work best?

Is it A, send a message on a tablet, B, talk or sign to them, C, draw a picture, or D, write a note.

Pause the video and think which is the correct answer.

A, B, C or D?

Then we'll check your answer.

Let's check your answer.

The answer was B.

Well done if you got that correct.

Being in the same room as somebody, it is easier to talk or sign to them.

Let's do the activity.

Look at each way of communicating.

Describe a situation where you would use it.

Think about a situation where you would use talking, a situation where you would use drawing, a situation where you would use writing, and a situation where you would use a digital device.

Pause the video, have a go at describing a situation for each of those ways of communicating, and then we'll go through some example answers.

Let's have a look at some answers.

So we were looking at each way of communicating and describing a situation where we would use it.

The first was talking, and in this one we've got when the person is with you.

For example, asking a teacher for help.

The second was drawing when you want to show an idea.

For example, a picture of your family.

The third was writing when someone will read the message later, and that could be a note.

And the fourth was using a digital device when the person is far away and you want them to get the message quickly.

For example, sending a message to someone in another country.

Well done if you got those correct and came up with some really good situations where you used talking, drawing, writing or using a digital device.

In summary, people communicate to share messages with other people.

Messages can convey ideas, information or simple greetings.

Messages are most commonly spoken, drawn or written.

People need to communicate in different ways for different situations.

People may choose different ways to share a message.

For example, people may use digital devices to communicate.

Well done for completing this lesson on how people communicate.
