Hello, my name's Miss Parnham and in this lesson, we're going to interpret timetables and distance tables.

In this example, we have parts of a timetable for a steam railway.

How long does the journey take on the first train between Pickering and Goathland? So we can see the first train departing from Pickering is the 0925 and that arrived at 1010 in Goathland, so that takes 45 minutes.

If we need to get to Whitby by 4:00 pm in 24 hour time, this is 1600.

So looking at those times, the last train we could catch would be the one that arrives at 1500.

And that leaves Levisham at 1320.

Here are some questions for you to try.

Here are the answers, even though we have a train arriving in Harrogate at 0945, this is a limited stop train and doesn't call at Headingley.

So Ron must catch the earlier train at 0907.

Here's another question for you to try.

Here are the answers, with a mode of transport such as a tram, they tend to keep very regular journey times.

So we can use the clues that we have from the timetable to complete all the other times.

So the journey times between Middlewood and Hillsborough are always six minutes as is Hillsborough to Shalesmoor.

And then from there to the Cathedral is nine minutes.

It is a very steep hill, and finally, the Cathedral and Castle Square stops are a minute apart.

Here we have a chart showing the distance in kilometres by road between seven cities.

If you have seen a road atlas before, these are often in the inside front cover or inside back cover for the major cities of the UK.

And this is how we read from them.

So let's look at the first question.

How far is it between Leeds and Bradford? So Bradford is above Leeds in this sort of stepped chart.

So we're going to read down from Bradford and across right to left from Leeds.

And we can see that that gives us 15.

So the answer is 15 kilometres.

If you start in Wakefield, how much further is it to Hull than York? So we've got two things to find out here.

We need to find out how far it is from Wakefield to Hull.

So Hull is above Wakefield in this sort of stepped situation.

So we're going to read down from Hull and from right to left from Wakefield.

And that gets us to 94.

So we know that the distance from Wakefield to Hull is 94 kilometres.

And then we need to work out how far it is from Wakefield to York.

So we're going to read down from Wakefield and across from York because Wakefield's above York in the list.

And that gets us 52 kilometres.

So a quick subtraction gets us 42 kilometres different.

Here's a question for you to try.

Here are the answers, Perth, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, roughly form a right-angle triangle.

So to go from Perth to Edinburgh, and then Glasgow would be a longer journey than going there directly.

So using the chart, we can find that Perth to Edinburgh is 70 kilometres and then Edinburgh to Glasgow is 73 giving it as a total of 143 kilometres.

And when we subtract that distance directly from Perth to Glasgow, which is 94, then we get 49 kilometres.

Another question for you to try.

Here are the answers, Because services are spaced along the same motorway and that's what you use to travel between them, then we can use addition and subtraction to complete the missing values in this instance.

It wouldn't be the same for other mileage charts.

That's all for this lesson.

Thank you for watching.
