Hello, my name is Miss Robson.

In our previous lesson, we were looking at numbers to 30.

In this lesson, we're going to be going even bigger and looking at numbers to 40.

We're going to look at how to write them and what's in different representations of them looks like.

We're also then going to practise counting them by finding things in our big picture to count.

For today's lesson, it might be helpful to have 40 things with you that you can use to count along with me.

You'll also need to be able to see a big picture later when it's time for you to do your task.

We're going to be looking at numbers to 40.

When we're looking at such big numbers, it's helpful to organise our thinking and our counting by grouping things in 10.

On the screen, you can see 40 straws they grouped in tens.

So there's four groups of 10, just like I have here 10, 20,30 and 40,40 straws all together, but they're grouped in tens to make them easier to count.

I'm going to show you how to write numbers to 40.

And I'm going to show you some different representations of numbers to 40.

I thought it might help if we started by looking at the group of 40 so that you can see how much that is.

Here are 40 cubes, they are not organised, they're just put down on the table.

And they are quite tricky to count like this because they're not in a line and then not grouped for us to count easily.

But you can see what 40 looks like.

I think if I stick these all into groups of 10, into nice long sticks it'll be easier for me to count them quickly and accurately.

Let me put them into groups of 10 now, here are my 40 cubes, but organised into sticks of 10 because they're all the same size I'm just going to count one to check they are 10 and then I'm going to count in multiples of 10.

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 there's 10 cubes in that state.

So they must all have 10 cubes or they are all the exact same height.

So counting in 10s 10,20,30,40.

All together, there are 40 cubes.

There are a lot easier to count like this, aren't they? Let's have a look to see what 40 straws might look like.

This is what 40 straws looks like.

There are a lot of straws here aren't there.

But again, because they're not organised and because they're not sorted at all.

It's quite tricky for me to count these.

I think I might bundle these into my sticks of 10 too, so that way I can count them quickly and efficiently.

Here are my four bundles.

Each bundle has 10 straws inside, that means that we can count them in tens 10,20,30,40 all together there are 40 straws here, but they're a lot faster and easier to count when they're bundled like this.

Now that we've done our bundling, let's look at how to write these numbers.

To start with, we have 30 straws.

That's three lots of 10 and zero loose straws.

1,2.

3, three lots of 10.

Then we add one loose straw to make 31 three lots of 10 and 1,1, three lots of 10 and one one.

Add one more and we have 32 straws.

Add another and we have 33 straws, 10,20 30,31 32,33 three lots of 10 and three loose straws.

Then we add one more and we have 34, three lots of 10 and four loose straws.

Add one more to make 35 three lots of 10,30 31,32 33,34, 35 add one more, one more than 35 is 36,30, 31,32,33,34,35,36.

add one more to make 37 three lots of 10 1,2,3 and seven ones 1,2,3,4,5,6,7.

Add one more straw to make 38 add one more straw to make 39 and now we have nine straws, if I add if I add one more loose straw, I will have 10 loose straws.

So I'm going to bundle them together using an elastic band to make a group of 10 10,20 ,30,40 one more than 39 is 40 which is four lots of 10s and zero ones.

Now that we've had a look at these numbers written down, I'm going to show you some different representations and give you a choice of numbers.

You just need to point to which number you think I've made.

So I have three lots of 10 One, two ones, can you point to which number you think I've made with my straws 10,20, 30,31, 32 three Lots of 10 and two ones.

It's the number 32.

What number do you think I've made with my straws now? 10,20, 30,31, 32,33, 33 it's this number here.

Here's one more remember to point to the screen, if that helps you to count 10,20, 30,31, 32,33,34,35,36, three lots of 10 and six ones.

The number is 36.

If you've got that one, right, give yourself a really big pat on the back.

Now that we've written and looked at our numbers to 40, it might be helpful for us to count from 30 to 40, to practise saying those numbers.

Are you ready? We're going to start at 30 and count to 40 in ones ready 30,31, 32,33,34,35,36,37,38,39,40.

Can we try one more time? You can use a really big, loud voice so you ready 30,31,32,33,34,35,36,37,38,39,40 fantastic counting, now that we've practised counting to 40, and we've practised reading numbers to 40, and we've looked at some different representations, we're going to look back at the big picture, like we did in our previous lesson to count some different sets of objects.

Let's zoom in on the big picture so that we can see up close the details.

I'm going to start by counting the trees.

Can you join in please? 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 there are 10 trees on this side of the hill I'm going to keep counting over here.

So counting from 10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20 there are 20 trees in the picture all together.

This time I'm going to count houses.

I don't think there are going to be enough houses for me to be able to practise counting all the way to 40 but I'd like to count them anyway just to check the start over this side 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 there are 10 houses.

Some of the other things that you could count in this picture are big stars.

Small stars, all of the stars together, flowers, characters, there are loads of different things that you can count in this big picture, including the shapes on the floor.

Your task is to go and count as many things as you can in this picture.

Your challenge is to try and find 40 of something 40 cows or 40 houses or maybe even 40 stars, you'll have to count and see.

Now that we've counted some things together, it's your turn to see if you can count some things from the big picture.

Your challenge is to see if you can find 40 of something.

So did you find anything that let you practise your counting all the way up to 40? I found one thing in the picture that there were 40 of.

Did you find anything there there was 40 of? I found 40 stars should we have a quick look, I managed to find 40 stars, and I noticed that they were in groups.

So at the top here, there is one group here.

And we're going to count those stars first 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, there are 10 stars.

Then there's another group at the bottom here 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10.

They're in groups of 10 that's going to make it easier for us to count them all together.

Let me check the groups over here.

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 10 in the top group, on the right hand side, and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 10 in the bottom group.

So all together that's 10,20,30 and 40 40 stars all together if you managed to count 40 stars all together as well, you deserve a really big pat on the back.
