Hello and welcome to this series on growth and decay this is our first lesson which is a recap of percentages so what I'd like you to do is to make sure you've got a pen and paper ready to go you've got a calculator ready and at hand because you're going to be doing a lot of calculating work today and just make sure you've got that quiet space that's distraction free and that you can really learn and do as much math as possible so without further ado lets take it away with Mr. Thomas lesson so for your "Try This" what I'd like you to consider is to use the digits 0-9 no more than once for each of them to complete this number frame in as many ways as possible you may leave blanks so for example you've got this student down here saying 1 0 and then a blank 3 6 because 10% of 360 is 36 so play around with your calculator see what you can get maybe use some number factor of 9 pause the video now and have a go trying for ten minuets to create as many as you can off you go excellent! Lets come back to it then and see what we can get so I'm thinking at the moment we could have for example 20% of 360 would that give us a number that we could put in there? That would give us 72 wouldn't it? So we couldn't have that so unfortunately that wouldn't work what about for example 30% of 360? Would that work? Well that would be 3 times the student after that so that would be 108 we couldn't do that one as well because that would leave us with 0 so what we could do maybe would 90% work? 90% work? Try it on your calculator now with 90% of 360 work? It would, wouldn't it? Right? 90% of 360 being 324 what other one could you think of? Well how about what about 15% ? Would that work? 3 of 360 that would give you 54 wouldn't it? So unfortunately that doesn't work because the 5 comes up again so its about all the time playing around with these numbers seeing what you can get because some of them will come up low some of them won't come up so much you've got to make sure as well you're not getting a decimal after you've got to get a whole number so that you can really really be sure that you've got it right and that it can go specifically in that number frame so keep playing around with it and I'm sure you'll get somewhere at some point its quite a - quite a tough little puzzle because you'll find a lot of them aren't necessarily springing up the nice answer that you always really want all the time so I'll leave you one final one you can have for example 25% would give you 90 right? You could also have you could also have 50% that would give you 180 yeah so a few different combinations there to get you started just check your answers those are the three I got you may work on more you got more? Fantastic very very good so for our "connect" today what I'd like to considerate is to use a calculator to workout the following now you'd want to start using your calculator to convert the percentage into a decimal because unfortunately calculators can't really do percentages very well there are very specific calculators that can but most calculators you need to convert it into a decimal so in order to do this what we need to do is we need to divide it by 100 of course so if we do that what were going to get is that is going to be 0.

91 multiply by 84 because when we see "of" in math we think multiply so were going to have to multiply that so if we do 0.

9 jump into my calculator now times by 84 we should get 76.

44 same principal for this one that's going to be doing the same calculation as 0.

14 multiplied by 12 so if I do that 0.

14 multiply by 12 I get 1.

68 converting 5.

8% though that's a little trickier that's going to be 0.

058 just be very careful some people think its 0.

58 unfortunately that's not the case so then multiply it by 3 what would that give us? Jump into your calculator see if you're going to beat me you got it? Oh you've beaten me well done 0.

174 very good what about this one? If you want to do an amount is that even possible? Of course it is it just means you're going over slightly right? So 109% would be 1.

09 multiply by 134.

9 so if we chuck that into our calculator what we get we get 147.

041 awesome if you got that well done without me having to help you what about this one? This one will be 2.

40 or 2.

4 either one multiply by 1423 one thousand four hundred and twenty three so if I do that I get and you've probably beaten me well done if you have 3415.

2 excellent and the final one that's a really big number that's going to be 9.

316 multiply by 2315.

4 so that's going to be equal to 21570.

2664 very good if you got that without having to have me help you so just some playing around with our calculators here making sure were getting somewhere and knowing the percentage of something we need to divide the percentage by 100 to get it to a decimal and then of course we can go from there by multiplying so for your "independent task" today very very similar to what we had just a moment ago what I'd like you to do is to simply change the numbers that I want you to have a go at making sure your really good with your calculator I'm going to give you five minuets to do that because I reckon you can do it really fast off you go! Awesome! Did you get these answers then? Its quite a lot to compute there and carry through so I'm just going to give you a moment just to mark your work but just remember all we're doing is we're saying that at 73% for example we divide it by 100 and get 0.

73 etc etc etc only ones that may oppose some real real issues may have been the bottom one just remember divide by 100 divide by 100 you should get that so mark your work right or wrong now I'll be moving on in 3.

and 1 lets go so for your "explore" today I want you to consider is using only orthogonal moves so you can not go diagonal you can go for example down here here here here and then down up down up sorry up across up across up across etc or even at some point here so you could start here down down across down down down across so you're going perpendicular all the time so quite roadboxy you cannot go diagonal then what is the longest chain of descending values you can find? so remember descending means decreasing so have a go at that pause the video now I'll give you ten minuets to work out those numbers and then I'll give you ten more minuets to think about which ones going to be the longest chain so off you go excellent! So I was thinking in the moment if we wanted to think about memes we could start off like I said here go down down down across down down down across down etc now it only works though if we start off 1000 and go 900,800,700,600,500,400,300 etc it for example would go when 1000 and then to 1100 there we couldn't do mould we could only do this one here so the answers were those did you get those? Because that's the first chapter first 10 minuets I set you you're supposed to do that and then we're thinking about which ones provide the longest chains well I'm trying it with the highest value to begin with so I'm thinking 550 seems like quite a big number I could go I could go down to here but then I can't really go anywhere else can I? I'm sort of stuck here aren't I? So I could start here that's a big number I can't go anywhere there so so far apart from up there and then I'm stuck again so the best I've got so far is two two in a chain that's rubbish isn't it? What about if I went from I could go from here down to here I could then go oh where could I go from here? I could go down to there and there so I've got a chain of four so far so starts off with two I've now got four see if I can get any further could you go hmm you could go to I can go here one two three four hmm not particularly helpful is it? What else could I get? I could go ooo where else could I go? Where else could I go? I could go now that would be a really nice one to end on wouldn't it be? 16.
