Hello, everyone.
My name is Mrs. Jenkins.
Welcome to today's lesson.
Our lesson today is called "Pet data," and it is taken from our unit "Perfect pets.
" I can't wait to get started!
In today's lesson, our learning outcome is: I can recognize that data can be used to make information about pets.
We have three keywords.
These words will appear throughout the lesson, so it's really important that we know what they mean before we get started.
We have fact, data, and information.
A fact is something that is true and can be proved.
Data is numbers, words, or pictures that you collect to learn something.
Information is important knowledge or facts you get from the data you collected.
So those three words are fact, data, and information.
In today's lesson, "Pet data," we have two learning cycles.
We have "Identify data about pets" and "Recognize that data is used to make information.
" We're going to begin with "Identify data about pets.
" People can describe pets using facts.
A fact is something that is true and can be proved.
So Laura says, "That pet is brown.
" And we can see that is a fact and it is true.
We can see a brown cat.
When a fact is written down or recorded, it becomes a data point.
So that pet is brown.
Data is made up of lots of data points.
So we can see our example here of data, and it's got data point, data point, data point, data point, data point all the way around it.
Okay, we have a quick check-in here.
I want you to think, which of these could be collected as a data point about a pet?
A, a toy dog, B, a black dog, or C, a pencil.
Have a go.
How did you get on?
I asked you: Which of these could be collected as a data point about a pet?
A, a toy dog, B, a black dog, or C, a pencil.
And the answer is B, a black dog.
A black dog could be collected as a data point about a pet.
Data points can be written in different ways.
Some can be written as numbers, and others as words.
So we have some examples here.
We have 25, red, banana, blue, 78.
So some are numbers, and some are words.
Okay, we're going to have another check-in here.
True or false?
Data about pets is only written using words.
Have a go.
How did you get on?
I asked you: True or false?
Data about pets is only written using words.
The answer is false.
The reason why is data can be written using numbers as well as words depending on what is being described.
For example, the dog is three years old.
Okay, we are going to move on to our first task now.
I would like you to look at these two pets.
What data can you gather about each pet from the pictures?
Have a go.
How did you get on?
For Task A, I asked you to look at these two pets.
What data can you gather about each pet from the pictures?
So let's have a look at these are some examples of data points you could have collected from the picture.
This is a creative task, so your data might be different to other people's.
Some examples for the dog.
He is black and white, so we could have collected data about his color.
He has two ears, so we could have collected data about how many ears he has.
He has four legs, so we could have collected data about how many legs he has.
He has fur.
Okay, so some other animals might not have fur.
For our rabbit, we have he is brown and white, so they are the colors.
He's small, okay, so you might be able to compare sizes.
He has two eyes, and he has one tail.
Great job, everyone.
We are going to move on to learning cycle two, "Recognize that data is used to make information.
" People can collect data about pets.
This data can be used to help people learn about the pet.
So we have a cat here, and the cat has two ears, the color is brown, it has four legs, and it is small.
So we have collected four pieces of data about this cat.
When people look at data points together, they can make information.
So we know some information about this cat.
Let's have a little check-in.
Which of these options is information made using data about a pet?
A, the pet is small and brown, B, small, or C, brown.
Have a go.
How did you get on?
I asked you: Which of these options is information made using data about a pet?
A, the pet is small and brown, B, small, C, brown.
The answer is the pet is small and brown.
Small and brown on their own don't tell us any information.
Information can help people learn about pets.
Laura says, "That pet is small and brown.
" Using more data points can help make information clearer.
Laura says, "The pet is small.
" But Jun says, "The pet is small and three years old.
" So we know even more about the pet from Jun's information.
Okay, let's have another check-in here.
True or false?
Looking at one data point on its own always gives you full information about a pet.
Have a go.
How did you get on?
I asked you: True or false?
Looking at one data point on its own always gives you full information about a pet.
The answer is false.
The reason why, information is made clearer when you use data points together.
When people put data points together, they make information.
Information tells you something new about the pet.
So here we have our cat.
It has two ears, it is brown, four legs, and small.
And Jun turns that into information of the pet is brown and has two ears.
Thank you, Jun.
Okay, we are going to move on to our Task B now.
Here is a list of data points about a pet.
Use some of the data points to make one sentence of information about the pet.
So we have got brown, small, three years old, and four legs.
Your sentence must use more than one data point.
Have a go.
How did you get on?
So for Task B, we said: Here's a list of data points about a pet.
Use some of the data points to make one sentence of information about the pet.
So we've got brown, small, three years old, and four legs.
Your sentence must use more than one data point.
Share your information.
This is a creative task, so your information might be different to other people's.
Andeep has said, "The pet is small and brown.
" And Jun has said, "The pet is brown and three years old.
" Well done, both of you.
Your examples each have two data points in your sentence.
Well done.
Well done.
You have worked really hard in today's lesson.
Let's summarize what we have learned.
A fact is one thing that can be said about a pet.
When facts are written down, they become data points.
Data is made up of many data points.
Using data helps people make information about pets.
Well done, everyone.
You have worked really hard today.
I can't wait to learn with you again soon!
