Hi, I'm Rebecca, your computing teacher for the "IT and the World of Work" unit.

Now, for this lesson, you're going to need a pen and paper so that you can answer any of the questions that I give you in this lesson.

You're also going to need to try your best to remove as many distractions as you possibly can so that you can really focus in this lesson.

Once you've got all of that ready, we can begin.

In this lesson, you will evaluate the importance of mental well-being to individuals, you'll evaluate the importance of physical well-being to individuals, and you'll learn how to create a positive working environment.

What are these devices typically used for? Pause your video while you have a think about that.

Well, the first one is a mobile phone.

And a mobile phone will typically be used for making phone calls.

That's its primary thing.

But also, it would be used for all sorts of things like text messages, checking on emails, internet browsing, listening to music, so, quite a lot of things that can be done on a mobile device.

The beauty of a mobile phone is that it's quite small, so it can usually fit in a pocket.

So it's very easy to take a mobile phone out and about.

The next one is a tablet.

Now, a tablet does a lot of the same things as a mobile phone.

But it has a much larger screen.

You wouldn't necessarily use it for phone calls, but you might use it for video calls, and also, for things like watching films and listening to music, too.

It is quite tricky to make a phone call on a tablet device, just because it's so large, but it is possible.

And then, the final one is a laptop.

Now, a laptop can also be used when you're out and about, because it's easy to move it around.

It hasn't got lots of wires and things connected to it, unless you're wanting to plug it into power.

So you can use it for all sorts of things like work, and schoolwork, and also, you could watch videos and things, too.

So you can do lots of things with it, but you're more likely to do actual work where you needed a keyboard, like typing documents and that kind of thing with a laptop.

Now, we're going to look at a case study.

And it's of an occupational health worker.

For your first activity, you'll be given a transcript of an interview with a remote worker.

You should read this carefully.

It will give you an insight into what remote working might be like.

So, go to the case study section of your worksheet, read the transcript carefully to discover what remote worker might be like.

Excellent, so what is well-being? Well-being is the state of feeling and being healthy and happy.

It involves taking physical exercise, talking to people, eating well, sleeping well, and learning new skills.

Now, you have two categories, and the first one is mental well-being.

Mental well-being describes your mental health, how well you cope with day-to-day life, how you feel, and how confident you are, so, having good self-esteem.

It involves identifying stress indicators, taking time to rest, being kind to yourself, and talking to others.

You've then got physical well-being.

Maintaining physical well-being involves making good lifestyles behaviour choices.

These can help to maintain health and avoid preventable diseases and conditions.

It includes eating a balanced diet, getting the right amount of exercise and fresh air, and avoiding substance abuse.

Finding a balance.

For good overall well-being, it is essential that a balance is found between mental and physical well-being.

Now, we have the impact of technology on well-being, so, positives.

Apps can encourage physical activity, it enhances access to learning, wearable technology can track your heart rate, diabetics can track blood sugar levels and receive warnings if it is high or low, helping them to manage their well-being, and it allows flexibility in choosing a working style.

The negatives, though, it can reduce sleep quality, it can give you eye strain or poor vision.

repetitive strain injuries, physical inactivity can lead to weaker muscles, overuse can lead to loneliness, depression, and anxiety.

Here's a quiz, then.

What is a state of feeling and being healthy and happy called? What do you think? Pause the video while you have a look at those answers.

Here's the answer, then.

It is well-being.

How you cope with day-to-day life is called what? Pause the video while you think.

So it is mental well-being.

How does technology impact everyday life? Which one is it? Pause the video.

Both negatively and positively.

Which of these should you have in a good working environment? Ventilation, definitely.

As well as sitting incorrectly, what else can cause neck strain, do you think? Having the monitor in the wrong position.

So, positive and negative.

Go to the "Positive and Negative" section of your worksheet.

Decide which statements are positive or negative impacts of technology.

Pause the video while you have a go at that.

Excellent, so here are the solutions.

Pause the video while you mark your work.

Creating a positive remote working environment, a lot like mine here, 'cause I work remotely.

So, identify the things you will need and have everything close by, make the room airy with a good window and plenty of light, set break times and stick to them, sit correctly, support your back and wrists, and have a good ergonomic setup.

A negative working environment includes not having what you need close by, having the wrong type of chair to sit on, poor lighting, the monitor position is too high or too low, lack of ventilation, no window, not taking breaks, and a poor ergonomic setup.

What I'd like you to do is to rate this remote workspace.

So, have a look and see if you can see positives and negatives in that image there.

Pause the video while you have a go.

Let's take a look, then.

So, the negatives, poor seat position.

She's very crouched over her desk.

Not enough space for working.

There's hardly any space, really, on that desk for working.

Monitor is not at eye level.

It's very below her eyes.

And then, the positives, though, it is a light and airy space.

There's a plant nearby to support well-being, and it is neat and tidy, too.

So, well done! We're now at the end of lesson six and the end of the "IT and the World of Work" unit.

Hopefully, this unit has given you a good insight into how technology is used in the modern workplace, and to give you a bit of an idea of what the working life might be like when you start work as well later on.

If you'd like to, please ask your parent or carer to share your work on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, tagging @OakNational and the hashtag, #LearnwithOak if you'd like to.

And hopefully, I'll see you again soon for another unit.
