For this lesson, you will need: an exercise book or some paper, a pencil or something to write with and your brain needs to be switched on ready for our learning.

If you need to go and get anything, pause the video now and go and get it.

In this lesson, we will start with a Writing warm-up, move on to a Story staircase, then we will Watch the climax and complete a task and then we will Watch the resolution and complete a task.

For this Writing warm-up, I would like you to write and match the sentence type with its conjunctions.

There are two sentence types and the rest are conjunctions.

Let's start reading from left to right, all the conjunctions and sentence types.

Let's do my turn, your turn.

'If, compound, but, while, when, as, complex, and, so, or, because and whilst.

' Let's find the sentence types and match them with the conjunctions.

Pause the video and complete this task.

Okay.

Let's have a look at our sentence types and conjunctions.

The first sentence type we have was Compound sentences.

Compound sentences are made up of a main clause and they are joined by a coordinating conjunction.

We also have a complex sentence made up of Mr. main clause and Mr. subordinate clause joined by subordinating conjunction.

Let's take a look at the conjunctions.

For a compound sentence we have: but, or and and.

For complex sentence we have: if, while, so, because, when, whilst and as.

Well done, if you managed to match the compound and complex sentences with their correct conjunctions.

Okay, so let's have a look at our Story staircase.

Can you remember the four main parts of the story? Say them to your screen? Wow, you're absolutely right.

We have the Opening, Build-up, Climax and Resolution.

We have completed our writing for the Opening and for the Build-up.

In today's lesson, we are going to be focusing on the Climax and Resolution.

Okay, so now we're going to watch the climax.

While we're watching the climax, I want you to have a real thinking about what you can hear in this clip.

Let's find out what happens.

[Foot Steps] [Arrietty screams] Okay.

So now we've watched the climax.

I asked you to focus on what you could hear during the clip.

What could you hear during the clip? Can you say it to your screen? Great.

One of the examples that I heard too was: birds tweeting, I could also hear the rustling of trees and leaves.

I want you now to pause the video and have a go at writing down some of the things that you heard in the clip.

Well done for writing down the things that you could hear in that clip.

The three main things that I could hear in that clip where: the birds tweeting, the rustling of the trees and leaves while they were swaying in the wind and Arrietty's really high pitch screaming.

You can write these ideas down and add them to your own.

Pause the video to do that now.

Now we're going to watch the climax again but this time, I really want you to focus on what you can see.

What is surrounding Arrietty? What can you see her looking at? What is she doing in the clip? Let's watch and find out.

[Foot Steps] [Thud Sound] [Screems] Okay.

So we watched the clip again and this time I got you to focus on what you could see.

What was Arrietty surrounded by? What was she looking at? One of the things that I saw was the lush, green garden.

Can you come up with some ideas of what you can see too? Pause the video and complete the task.

Write down as many things that you could see in that clip.

Well done for coming up with what you could see in that clip.

Here's some of the ideas that I came up with.

I had: Arrietty wandered off; I could see that she was wandering off into the garden.

The lush, green garden, a glistening marble in the distance; we can see a glistening marble, that attracts Arrietty's attention.

The towering boy; when Arrietty looks up, the boy is towering over her.

An enormous shadow; when Arrietty is looking at the marble, we can see that she is overcome by a shadow.

The scorching sunshine; we can see it's a very sunny day in the garden.

You can now write down these ideas and add them to your own.

Pause the video, to do this now.

Now I'd like you to think about how Arrietty feels.

What does she feel like now that she's outside and able to borrow? She's going into the garden and exploring all of these different things.

My example is that she feels free.

She's free to explore and look in the garden and walk out into the beautiful sunshine.

I would like you to come up with some adjectives to describe how Arrietty is feeling in this clip.

Think about her exploring the garden and when the tall boy towers over her, how is she feeling? Pause the video and complete this task.

Well done for having a go and coming up with some adjectives to describe how Arrietty is feeling.

I had to go on my own and I came up with: that she felt free, she feels unrestrained; before she felt quite restrained in her home.

Her parents wouldn't let her out and now she's free to explore.

She's quite terrified when the boy towers over her and she screams at a really high pitch and she seems quite frightened by the towering boy.

If you'd like to, you can write down these ideas and add them to your own.

Pause the video to do this now.

For your next task, I would like you to write a sentence about the climax.

You can use all of the ideas you have generated through what you could hear, see and how Arrietty was feeling.

Here's some example of sentences that I came up with.

Let's have a look at the first one.

'The curious borrower walked into the lush, green garden and the soft breeze caressed her skin.

' I've used the idea of the lush, green garden and Arrietty is walking into the garden.

She's exploring the garden.

I have written a compound sentence using 'and' as my coordinating conjunction.

'The curious borrower walked into the lush, green garden,' is a main clause and make sense on its own.

Then we have my coordinating conjunction 'and,' 'The soft breeze caressed her skin,' is a main clause and makes sense on its own.

So this is a compound sentence.

You might like to write a compound sentence for your sentence.

Let's have a look at another example.

' In the garden, Arrietty spotted a mysterious, glistening object so she crept towards it.

' Here, Arrietty doesn't realise that that is a marble.

So I've decided to call it an object.

I've described it as mysterious, glistening object.

You can use these ideas in your own sentences.

I would like you now to pause the video and have a go at writing your own sentence about the climax.

Okay.

Well done for writing your sentence about the climax.

I'm sure you've used lots of your brilliant ideas about what you could hear and see and how Arrietty felt walking through the garden.

Now we're going to move on to the Resolution.

We're going to watch the clip and again, I want you to think about what you can hear in this clip.

Let's watch and find out.

I'm going home.

Don't go.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean it.

I'll go and try and find your uncle and aunt.

Maybe I could take a letter from you and post it down the hall.

Good to hear.

Whereabouts in the house do you live? I'll leave it under the front doormat.

Should I get that book? If you like.

Arrietty? There you are.

[Foot Steps] What are you doing out here? Supposing that I didn't come by then you'd be shut out.

I'm sorry.

It wouldn't be any good being sorry then, would it? Now listen, if you want to go borrowing again, there are certain rules that must be kept.

Come on.

It's time we're back indoors again.

What the matter with your foot? You hurt yourself? Nothing.

I just tripped.

Ah, you see what happens when you go out on your own like this.

If it wasn't you got hurt, worst you've got stuck out here.

I didn't get stuck.

Well, what did you see? What was it like? Mom I saw the clock with a balling room and I saw the hole and I saw the most enormous fire place and this great big mantle place.

That's where the yoga mat was when there were no loss I can tell you.

Oh, and mother the garden, the sun was so bright you could hardly believe it.

[Mumbles inaudible words] Yes, yes.

Okay.

So we've watched the resolution and we see what happens when Arrietty meets with the boy.

He then offers to take a letter to her uncle and auntie.

Then Pod finally finds Arrietty after being so worried about her and then takes her home.

What did you hear in that scene? What were some of the noises you could hear? What were some of the things that you could hear in the background? Here's some of the things that I heard: birds tweeting, the rustling of trees and leaves; just like in the climax and Pod calling for Arrietty.

I would like you to pause the video and write down all of the things that you could hear in that clip.

Well done for writing down all of the things that you could hear in that clip.

Now we're going to focus on what we can see.

I'm going to play the clip again and I want you to focus on what can you see in this clip? Let's watch it and find out.

I'm going home.

Don't go.

I'm sorry.

I didn't mean it.

I'll go and try and find your uncle and aunt.

Maybe I could take a letter from you and post it down the hall.

Good to hear.

Whereabouts in the house do you live? I'll leave it under the front doormat.

Should I get that book? If you like.

Arriettty? There you are.

[Foot Steps] What are you doing out here? Suppose that I didn't come by then you'd be shut out! I'm sorry.

It wouldn't be any good being sorry then, would it? Now listen, if you want to go borrowing again, there are certain rules that must be kept.

Come on.

It's time we're back in doors again.

What's the matter with your foot? You hurt yourself? Nothing.

I just tripped.

Oh, you see what happens when you go out on your own like this.

If it wasn't you got hurt, worst you got stuck out here.

[Inaudible] Yes, yes.

Okay.

So this time I asked you to focus on what you could see in that clip.

One of the ideas that I came up with was that Arrietty is in the scorching sunshine.

She's standing in the sunshine in that clip.

I want you now to pause the video and come up with some different ideas of what you could see in that clip, pause the video now to complete the task.

Well done for coming up with some ideas of what you can see in that clip.

Here is some of the ideas that I came up with.

Feel free to take some of these ideas and write them down.

The first one is Arrietty in the scorching sunshine, Arrietty and James sitting side by side, Pod found Arrietty, Arrietty is limping on the way back and Pod is questioning If she's hurt and they return home.

You can pause the video and add these to your ideas.

Okay.

So now I want you to think about how Arrietty felt in that clip.

How did Arrietty feel? My example is that she felt disappointed.

She felt disappointed that she had wandered off and her father was disappointed in her.

So how did Pod feel? Pod seems like he felt very worried about his daughter and where she had gone.

I would like you now to write down some adjectives to describe how Arrietty felt and how Pod felt in that clip.

Pause the video to complete the task.

Well done for writing down some adjectives about how Pod and Arrietty feel in this clip.

For Arrietty I put that she felt disappointed, excited and thrilled.

She's disappointed that she walked away from her father but she's very excited about going borrowing and she's thrilled when she returns to tell Homily all about her borrowing experience.

Pod was feeling quite worried and he also felt quite relieved that he had found his daughter.

He's also quite protective of her.

You can write these ideas down If you would like.

Pause the video now and you can add these ideas to your own.

Okay.

Now I would like you to write your own sentence for the resolution.

Here's an example of a sentence that I came up with.

' While her worried father called for her, Arrietty stood in the scorching sunshine.

' What type of sentence have I written? You're absolutely right.

It's a complex sentence.

I've got my subordinating conjunction at the start, It is 'while.

' ' While her worried father called for her,' does not make sense on its own.

It's Mr. subordinate.

'Arrietty stood in the scorching sunshine'.

That is a main clause and makes sense on its own.

You could write a complex sentence for your sentence for the resolution.

Pause the video and complete this task.

Congratulations on completing the 14th lesson in this unit.

You have done a fantastic job working throughout.

We have looked at the Opening, Build-up, Climax and Resolution for 'The Borrowers'.

Next lesson, you will be working with Ms. Madden.
