Hello and welcome to today's design and technology lesson.

We are studying shell, solid and combination structures.

And in today's lesson, we're going to learn how to develop a design brief and how to sketch ideas for our product that we are designing.

My name is Mrs. Bishop and I'm so happy to be your teacher today.

Lets begin.

In today's lesson you will need an exercise book or some paper and a pencil.

Pause the video so you can go and get those things now.

Now that you're ready we can begin.

Today you should have already completed your intro quiz.

Well done for giving that a go.

Now we are going to look at our design brief.

After that we shall look at sketching some of our ideas for our structures.

Then we shall annotate our sketches.

And finally I would like you to complete your exit quiz today.

Today there are some keywords that we will use throughout this lesson.

The first key words is design brief.

Can you say those words? This is a description of the product We will design.

It states how a product will function to meet the needs of a user.

The next word that you might see today is purpose.

Can you say the word purpose? The purpose is the reason why an item is created.

Next is the word product.

Can you say the word product? Product is the item we will design and make.

Next word is user.

Can you say the word user? User is the person who will use our product.

Then we have the word sketch.

Can you say the word sketch? Sketch is to make a rough drawing of a product.

The next word is annotate.

Can you say the word annotate? Annotate is to add notes, which state opinions or make comments about the product.

Now we shall look at our design brief.

Writing a design brief together.

Nice.

Why should we write a design brief? Well, with a clear starting point for the design of the structure, it's kind of like the purpose of the structure or outline the problem the structures will solve.

It may identify the user or users of the structure.

That's a very important step that we start with our design brief.

Well, what might our design brief say? well, it might say something like this.

Let's read it together, I will design make and evaluate some type of structure for some type of user to meet some sort of purpose.

Now, this is where you've got to get involved because you've got to decide what is your structure going to be? Who is the user going to be? And what is the purpose of your structure? So here's an example to help you quite it say, well, it might say I will design and make a tent for myself to go camping in the garden.

So the tent is the structure, myself is the user and the purpose is going camping in the garden.

Of course, it might say something different it might say, I will design and make a cycling helmet for my friend to keep him safe when he is cycling.

So what's the structure here.

Can you shout it out? That's right.

It's a cycling helmet.

What is the user? you shout it out? That's right.

Just my friend.

And what's the purpose? That's right.

It's to keep him safe when he is cycling.

Here's another example.

Oh, and I am feeling in the same sentence.

I will design make and evaluate a party box for my family members to contain slices of birthday cake.

So again, shall I tell you what the structure is? What's the structure? That's right.

It's a party box.

Who's the users of the structures? Can you shout it out? That's right.

It's family members.

And finally, what's the purpose? Can you shout it out so I can hear it? That's right.

The purpose is to contain slices of birthday cake.

So all design briefs contain a structure, a user and a purpose.

And what I want you to do today is think what might your design brief say? What is your structure going to be that you're going to design make and evaluate? And what's your user going to be? And what will the purpose be? But to give you a little bit of help, here's some examples of what it could be.

So some possible structures could be a tent, pencil case, a desk organiser, a lunchbox, a packaging box, a pet shelter, a second helmet or a toy.

But of course it could be other things if you can get your creative juices going and think of different structures.

Some of the purpose possible users could be yourself, a parent or carer, a sibling, a relative, a friend, a neighbour or a guest to your home.

Of course, there may be other users that you can think of.

And finally, our cox possible purposes could be for a celebration or storage or packaging or protecting a product for presentation or for postage of a particular product.

Of course, there may be other purposes.

Now, I want you to know you could pause the video to complete your first task and that is to write a design brief.

I want you to write the following sentence, filling in the structure that want to design and also decide who the user will be and what the purpose of your product will be.

Pause the video now to complete your task.

Welcome back.

I hope, you know, I have a really clear design brief.

This is so important within this unit.

So now that you know what structure you will be designing and the user and purpose, it will help you know to begin to sketch some ideas.

Now that I have written down my design brief.

I have written down, I will design and make a pet shelter for a dog to keep him dry and safe in the garden.

Now what I want to start to do, is start to sketch a new page for this okay.

All that we need today is the pencil, but if I need to, I might want to use a ruler too, so that I can do some straight lines.

I'm just going to leave that there for now.

So what I start to think about what will my pet shelter look like? And today I want to use my sketching skills.

Just start to show those ideas.

So thinking about your structure now, how are you going to sketch your structure now in a moment.

So I'm going to start by thinking about what do I really need to have in my structure to make sure that the dog will stay dry and safe.

So I'm trying to think about, I'll need a roof to keep the dog nice and safe inside.

I'm trying to think about what sort of angle will I want my roof to be.

What I want to do is just start by sketching, sketching my different shapes.

I'm starting with the roof.

I'm just thinking about a traditional roof that I've had before, my base of a nice angled one.

And see that I'm just using nice little short lines to start sketching and that doesn't limit.

It doesn't matter if I go outside of what I need to do like here cause I can always go back at the end and erase those lines.

So I'm going to start with that type of shape for the roof of my dog shelter.

And then I need to build some walls.

I'm just going to sketch the walls of my dog shelter.

And also I'll need a floor, somewhere for the dog to sit.

And I might think about trying to make it more comfortable for the dog by including a different cushion at the bottom.

Remember this is going to be a shell, solid and combinations structure so I can use different materials and different types of structure within my design today.

So I'm going to just do a nice cushion like this, and then I'm going to think, well, I will need a sort of a cover at the front too.

So think of what different shapes can I use here to make my front cover.

That'd be a nice window for the dog, a little cutout bit here at the top, I'm going to do the little heart shape cause I really love my dog.

And I think that's my first design.

Done.

I mean, what I can do is I can start to sketch another design and maybe try and make it a bit different this time.

How could I use different shapes or the circular shapes to make different designs? And I want to just spend some time working on my designs and changing them, changing the shapes slightly until I get the sweet design that I want.

I kind of, if I want to go back and rub out any construction lines I've made at the end, just to meet my designs up.

But the purpose of a sketches is that it should be, it should be a sketch.

It should be sketchy because at the minute, we're just trying to gather some ideas.

Now I would like you to pause the video to complete your ideas.

I would like you to sketch some ideas for your own structure and try to make it one that you are really interested in designing.

I want you to pause the video now and have a go at this task.

Welcome Back.

I hope you've enjoyed sketching your ideas.

And that next thing we are going to do is we are going to annotate our sketches.

I'm going to show you how I could annotate my sketches now.

The next thing I want to do is think about how I can annotate my sketches.

So now I've had an idea, two ideas, and I sketch them here.

Okay.

Annotating is when I add notes to my sketches, to explain the different features and why they might be important.

So I just do is I draw an arrow to each picture and I started to add some short notes about each of the features.

So why have I chosen to have a sloping roof? I've chosen to have a sloping roof.

So I'm going to write it's a sloping roof and I might just quickly add, Keeps keeps the dog dry.

Okay, why did I decide to add the cushion I decided to add the cushion to make the dog comfortable.

So cushion for comfort.

What material did I say I was going to make my dog shelter from, I think I might make it from painted wood.

Okay.

So I'm just beginning to annotate my sketches.

And the second one I did was more of a novelty one looks a little bit like a cupcake.

So I'm going to write down on it Cupcake design.

I also shown the dog inside the design this time.

So I'm going to write I've done that because I want to show how the shape and size is good for this dog.

And this one's actually going to be made from a fabric, so I'm going to write down made from fabric.

I might say because it's cosy and warm.

So the reason I annotate my designs is that, so that I can remember all the different features that would be part of my structure.

Now I want you to think about your own structures and how you could annotate your designs that you have done.

Right? I want you to pause the video to complete your task.

I want you to annotate to your own sketches, including all the different features that you can see in your sketch and try and think about why each feature is important and why it's important to include it in your final structure design.

Pause the video now to complete your task.

Welcome back.

I hope you've enjoyed annotating your ideas today.

Remember, this is such an important step, so we know what each part of your structure is there for and why it's important.

Thank you for joining me today to develop your very own design brief for your structure and also for creating such wonderful sketches.

Will you hold them up to me now so I can see them? They are wonderful.

Well done everybody.

I hope you're enjoying learning about structures and I hope that you're getting ready now to start to make your own structure.

Remember we were studying solid, shell and combination structures.

And our final structure would be a combination of all of those.

I hope to see you again soon, but in the meantime, stay safe and goodbye.
