- Hi, everyone.

Welcome to lesson five in our unit on The Sweet-Talking Potato.

I am so excited for our lesson today because we are going to be thinking all about the characters.

I'm looking to get out some special puppets of those characters in our story and see what they do.

We're also going to play some games and sing some songs.

So let's see what you're going to need today.

In today's lesson you are going to need a piece of paper, a pencil.

You will have Teddy talk partner and your thinking brain.

So if you need to go and get any of those things, press the pause button now and press play when you are ready.

We are going to start off by singing a song together.

Then we're going to play a game.

And then we're going to think about all the characters in the story.

First off today, we're going to sing our story song all about The Sweet-Talking Potato.

If you have joined in with any of our other lessons and you can remember some of the words join in, otherwise we're going to do my turn, your turn and you can copy the words after me.

You're ready? ♪ One sweet potato, one sweet potato ♪ ♪ Set hands off, set hands off ♪ ♪ The farmer screamed and he ran away ♪ ♪ The farmer screamed and he ran away ♪ ♪ He ran and he ran on such a hot day ♪ ♪ He ran and he ran on such a hot day ♪ ♪ Until he came to the market place ♪ ♪ Until he came to the market place ♪ ♪ One sweet potato, one sweet potato ♪ ♪ One talking dog, one talking dog ♪ ♪ Said it was him, said it was him ♪ ♪ The farmer screamed and he ran away ♪ ♪ The farmer screamed and he ran away ♪ ♪ He ran and he ran on such a hot day ♪ ♪ He ran and he ran on such a hot day ♪ ♪ Until he came to the check in shop ♪ ♪ Until he came to the check in shop ♪ ♪ One talking dog, one talking dog ♪ Now it's time to add on a new verse.

I hope you joined in at the actions.

And I hope that you're starting to remember some of those words now, because that song can really, really help us to remember, what happens in the story.

We've got a very special visitor for our game today.

The farmer is going to come and help us tell the story.

Should we call him and see if he'll come out? Farmer, farmer.

Come and help us.

Look he's here.

The farmer has come to help us tell the story.

Are you ready farmer? "Ugh, once upon a time, there was a farmer." "He was feeling very, very hungry." "So he went to pick a potato," but the potato yells, "hands off." The farmer was amazed.

He looked at his dog and he said, "was that you that spoke?" The dog said, "oh no, it wasn't me, it was the potato." "Ugh," screamed the farmer.

And he ran, and he ran, and he ran.

All the way to the marketplace where he met a man who was selling chickens.

The man asked the farmer, "why are you running so fast when the day is so hot?" What did the farmer reply? "First, my potato spoke to me." "Then my dog spoke to me." "That's impossible," replied the man.

"Oh no, it isn't," said the chicken.

"Ugh," screamed the farmer.

And he ran away as fast as his legs would carry him.

He ran and he ran all the way until he came to the baker.

The baker was selling, loaves of bread.

The baker said to the farmer, "why are you running so fast when the day is so hot?" "First, a potato spoke to me." "Then a dog spoke to me." "And now, a chicken has spoken to me," replied the farmer.

"No, that's impossible," said the baker.

"Oh no, it's not," cries the loaf of bread.

"Ugh," screamed the farmer.

And he ran away as fast as his legs would carry him.

He ran and he ran and he ran all the way until he came to the palace.

But he met the King who was sitting on his throne.

The King said to the farmer, "why are you running so fast when the day is so hot?" "Well, first," he spoke to him.

"A potato spoke to me, then a dog spoke to me, then a chicken and now a loaf of bread has spoken to me." "That's impossible," said the King.

"Get out." And he sent the farmer away.

The King couldn't believe his ears! Talking bread, talking potatoes, and talking dogs.

I can't believe how foolish that man was to think those things could talk.

There was a low silence.

"Whoever heard of a talking potato," said the throne.

That's the end of our story.

I hope that you enjoyed watching the puppets help tell our story today.

And I hope that you could join in with some of our words.

We're going to be thinking of all of these puppets in a minute.

For our next part of the lesson today you are going to need your Teddy talk partner.

Because we are going to be thinking and naming all of the characters in our story.

So I want you to start off by having, oh, oh, Teddy says, "what is a character?" So sorry Teddy, a character is a person, an animal or a thing in a story that can perform an action, that can do something or that can speak.

So in our story this week talking potato, there are lots and lots of characters.

Have a think now.

What characters can you remember from our story? Hm, I can remember, who was this? Do you remember? The farmer, who was this character? This character is the potato.

Who was the next character? The next character is the dog.

Then we have got a, who's this Teddy? "This is the loaf of bread." We also had, who's this Ted? "The chicken, the talking chicken." Then who did we meet near the end of the story? We met the King.

And the King had his throne to sit on.

His special, special chair.

So these are the characters in our story.

So today we are going to have a go with our Teddy talk partners at describing the characters and especially describing what the characters are doing.

Me and Ted are now going to play a game.

Because what we're going to think about is what characters in our story are doing.

So we're going to start off by having to think about what we're doing.

So Teddy is going to watch, I'm going to perform an action and you and Teddy are going to join together and tell me what I'm doing.

I want you to describe to me what I'm doing.

So Ted, you sit over here and watch and I want you to have a go at telling me what I'm doing.

So first of all, this is what I'm going to do.

What am I doing? I am reading a story.

Let's see if you can have a go at describing what I'm doing now.

What are these? Oh! What am I doing? I am using a green pen and I'm using a piece of paper and I am drawing a picture.

So well done for describing what I was doing with Teddy.

First, I was reading a book, then I was doing some drawing.

I wonder if we can have a go at describing what one of the characters in our story is doing.

I think there are lots of different things that we could draw and write about the farmer.

We could write about him being hungry and picking the potato.

We could write about him running and being scared.

We could write and draw about him, meeting all the other characters.

I'm going to pick, to draw when the farmer is running.

But if you want to choose a different part of the story and draw what the farmer is doing, at a different time.

Then of course you can draw something different to me.

Let's try this all together first though.

So, I'm going to draw the farmer running.

What does the farmer look like when he's running? His head is up.

He's looking where he's going.

His body might be back a little bit because he's running really fast.

And when you're running your arms bend, don't they? So we're going to draw his arms bent.

They're going backwards and forwards.

And we can have a go at drawing his legs being bent because when you are running, you need to pick your knees up as fast as you can.

So we have also got his bent knees.

He might still have his hat on but maybe he's back a little bit and blowing in the wind.

So here we have got our farmer and he is running.

Let us have a go at labelling what our farmer is doing.

The farmer runs.

Let's write the word runs.

Do you remember what we're doing when, what we do when we're writing? We have to say the word, robot the word.

Write the word.

Can you join in with me? Say the word, robot the word.

Write the word, well done.

So, our word is runs? Say it with me, runs.

Write by the word, r-u-n-s, runs.

What's that first sound? Runs, r-u, runs.

r-u-n, runs.

r-u-n-s.

Let's check again, r-u-n-s, runs.

Wow! We have just drawn a picture of the farmer and labelled what the farmer is doing.

So now that we've drawn one of the characters from the story all together, it's going to be your turn.

You need to get out you're talking Ted, and you need to get out your piece of paper and your pencil.

First of all, I would like you to decide with your Teddy which is your favourite character from the story and which character you would like to draw, and think about what they are doing.

So press the pause button now, talk with your Ted about what your favourite character is doing and then press the play button.

So now you're going to need to use that piece of paper and pencil to draw a picture of your favourite character.

If you pick the farmer, you could do the farmer running and running as fast as he could.

You could do the farmer picking a potato.

You might want to do the farmer talking to the man or talking to the King.

You might want to draw the farmer being sent away from the palace by the King.

Remember that whatever you draw think about what the farmer is doing.

Okay? I can't wait to see your lovely pictures.

You might want to write a word to show us what your character is doing.

You might want to write a whole sentence to show us what the character is doing.

I can't wait to see your lovely pictures.

So press the pause button now, have a go at drawing your character and showing and writing what they are doing.

When you finished your picture, press the play button.

I loved seeing all of your amazing pictures well done if you had to go a drawing your favourite character from the story and thinking about what they were doing.

We have thought so much about the action that's happening in the story today.

Can you remember what action is? It's all the things that happen in the story.

What the characters are doing and what happens to them.

Well done on all of your hard work, to follow our lesson six, you might want to have a go at drawing some of the different characters from the story and thinking about what happens to them.

Me and Teddy would love to see your pictures.

You might also want to have a go and making your own puppets like we did earlier on in the lesson.

I can't wait to see you in lesson six, have a lovely day.

Bye.
