Where we will be writing instructions on how to make a pizza for our monster.

In today's lesson we'll be focusing on grammar.

Looking at the verb "to be" and the different ways or the different forms of the verb "to be".

Okay.

Let's get started.

Let's go through our agenda for today.

First, we'll be looking at the verb "to be".

Then we will be looking at the singular and plural forms of the verb "to be".

After that, we will look at the present and past tense of the verb "to be" and finally we will complete our task.

In this lesson, you will need an exercise book or some paper, a pencil, and you're brain for all the thinking you're going to need to do.

Okay, let's have a look at "being verbs".

But before let's just have a remember of what an adjective is.

An adjective is a describing word.

It tells you what something is like.

Let's have a look at our verb definition.

A verb is a doing or a being word.

If you do it or you are it, then the word is a verb.

And today we are going to be looking at that type of verb, the "being" type.

So if it's a "being" word and if you "are it" then it's a verb.

And that is what we're looking at today.

The verb "to be".

The verb "to be" shows a state or a feeling.

For example, I am hungry.

He is tired.

They are happy.

Am, is and are, are all forms of the verb "to be".

Often after the verb "to be" there is an adjective.

I wonder if you can find the adjectives in the sentences below.

My sentences are: I am hungry.

He is tired.

They are happy.

The verbs have already been highlighted for you.

Can you pause the video and identify the adjectives in these sentences.

Really good job remember adjectives are describing what they describe, what something is like, so let's have a look.

Our adjectives were: hungry, tired and happy well done.

If you identified all of those adjectives in these sentences.

The verb "to be" can be written in different ways.

Let's have a look at them now.

These are all the different forms of the verb "to be".

I'm going to say the first and then you can say them after me.

Am, is, are, was, be, been, being, were Good job.

I would like you to write down the forms of the "being" verbs in these sentences.

Write down the "being" verbs in these sentences.

She is silly.

I am hungry.

They are young.

Pause the video and write down the verbs in these sentences now.

I wonder if you found them all.

The verbs were: is, am and are.

Give yourself a tick for every one that you wrote down correctly.

Can you now write down the "being" verbs in these sentences: He was happy.

I was tired.

They were brilliant at art.

Now, let's look at our singular and plural forms of the verb "to be".

What is the verb in this sentences.

I have two sentences here the first one says: He was happy.

And my second sentence says: They were happy.

Pause the video and write down the verb in each of these sentences.

Well done.

My verb in my first sentence was "was" and in the second sentence it was "were".

He was happy.

They were happy.

What is different about these sentences, what differences can you notice? Maybe you notice a difference with the pronoun, maybe notice difference about the verb.

Pause the video now and say the difference I notice is, pause the video and say our sentence aloud.

Okay, Let's have a look.

I can see my first sentence.

I have used the word "he", he is singular.

There is only one person in this sentence and that means when this is a singular I use "was" as my verb.

"They" is plural, there is more than one person in this sentence.

There are at least two people in this sentence.

And so when my pronoun there is plural, I would use the verb "were".

Forms of the singular "being" verb.

So if my pronoun is he or she meaning one person, we would use the "being" verbs "is" or "was".

when my pronoun is "I" we use the "being" verbs am or was.

When I have the pronoun they meaning more than one person, we use the "being" verbs are or were and when we have the pronoun we meaning myself and somebody else, both myself and other people.

we also use the forms of the "being" verb are or were.

Now let's have a look at the present and past tense forms of the verb "to be".

Again,I would like you to write down the verb in these sentences.

My sentences are: He is tired.

He was tired.

Can you write down the verb in each of these sentences? Good job.

I wonder if you manage to identify the verb in each sentence.

in my first sentence.

The verb was "is" He is tired And in my second sentence, It was "was".

He was tired.

What is different about these sentences? He is tired.

He was tired.

I know that "he" is the singular pronoun there and that's used in both sentences.

So my difference must be with my verb.

I bet you said a fantastic full sentence aloud.

in my first sentence of I have used the verb "is".

The verb "is" shows us that this is happening in the present.

It's happening now.

He feels tired now or he is tired now.

The verb "was" in my second sentence shows us that this happened in the past.

He's not tired anymore he was tired.

He's already been tired.

It happened in the past.

Okay, here is another one.

What is the verb in be sentences? They are tired.

They were tired Identify the verb in these sentences and write them down.

Good job.

I bet you did a brilliant job at that.

My verbs are: "are" and "were".

They are tired.

They were tired.

What is different about these sentences? Again, they both use the pronoun "they" and I know that they means more than one so my difference must be with my verbs "are" and "were" Pause the video the different I notice is____ and I think that that difference is there because_____ maybe you could stretch yourself tell me why that difference is there.

Let's have a look.

So just like before "are" and "were" show us things that are happening now in the present and things that happened in the past.

They are tired.

"Are" shows us that this is happening in the present.

They are tired now and the verb "were" shows us that this happened in the past.

They are not tired anymore.

They were tired, It's already happened.

Here is a helpful chart to help us remember, we have the present and the past tense forms of the verb "to be" and also the singular and the plural forms of the verb "to be" so singular present are: I am your turn, You are.

He/she/it is Good job, and the singular form of the verb "to be" in the past tense is: I was, You were, she was.

And now we've got our plurals.

Okay in the present tense, the plural form of the verb "to be" is: we are, you are, they are " you can see my plural pronouns there: we, they and you, which can be singular or plural? Okay, and let's have a look in the past tense.

when we're using a plural pronoun: we, you, they We use the verb "were".

We were, you were, they were.

Really good job.

Now it is time for our task.

I would like you to choose the appropriate verb for each sentence below.

I have given you the verbs:am,is,are.

You need to choose which one goes in which sentence.

my sentences are: I_____late for school.

They_______ exhausted.

She______ funny.

After you have written the appropriate verb in each sentence.

I want you to have a think, what tense are these sentences in? are they in the past? They have happened in the past or are they in the present tense? Are they happening now.

How do you know? I also have a challenge box for you there, it says challenge yourself: write two sentences using forms of the verb "to be"" see if you can write them in the past tense.

In my first sentence I needed to use the verb "am"" I am late for school my second sentence I needed to use the verb "are"" They are exhausted because they is a plural.

My third sentence I needed to use the verb "is", she is funny.

"I" and "she" are singular.

There's only one person we use: I am and she is These sentences are in the present tense and I know because am, are and is, are all my present tense forms of the verb "to be" if you didn't challenge yourself before you can always challenge yourself now, if you'd like to and write those two sentences using forms of the verb "to be".

seeing if you can write them in the past tense.
