Hello, everyone, welcome back to another lesson with me Ms. Sidenius.

Today, we're going to be learning all about, one of my favourite type, of creatures, Minibeasts.

So we're going to start today's lesson thinking about lots of different types of minibeasts.

Then we're going to have a think about where these minibeasts like to live, what their habitat is.

And finally, we're going to create a bug hotel.

So in this lesson, you're going to need four things, some sticks, some leaves, some stones, and a container.

Pause the video here, make sure you've got those four things, and come back when you're ready.

Star words, star words, star words, my turn habitat, habitat.

A habitat is the natural home of an animal plant or other organism.

Different animals live in different habitats.

For example, fish live in underwater habitats.

Whereas other animals like squirrels and deer, like to live in woodland habitats.

Minibeasts can be found in lots of different places.

You can find them in your garden, at the park, in the woods, and even at the beach.

Let's have a look at some specific minibeasts to find out more about where they like to live.

We're going to start with minibeast that we can find all over the place, and I'm sure lots of you have seen these before.

Can you tell me what you see on the screen? That's right, ants, I see ants just walking down the street on the pavement, and I see them in the woods, in the grass, and in flower beds too, they're everywhere.

Ants it's like to live with lots and lots and lots of other ants.

When you see ants, do you always see them with another ant as well? Yes, I don't think I've ever seen an ant all on its own, they like to be with lots of other ants, and they can live underground, in nests, like the one that you can see in the picture here.

Or in wood structures, and trees.

So they've got lots of different habitats where they like to live.

Ants come out of their homes to find food.

They like to eat almost anything, and they're very, very strong, so they can help each other to carry their food back to their habitat or home.

They will eat fruit, dead insects, grains, and even other ants.

So they like to have their habitats and their home, close to the foods that they like to eat.

What minibeasts can you see on the screen now? Shout out, that's fine, a lady bird.

And can you show me on your fingers, how many lady birds can you see on this screen? Show me, if you held up four fingers, you were right.

I can see four ladybirds on the screen.

Where do you think lady bird's like to live? Have you ever seen one before? Tell your screen, that's right in the summertime.

Lady birds like to live near plants, grasslands, flowers, and branches as well.

They like to live near these things, because they like to eat all kinds of different plants, insect and fruit.

When the weather gets colder, lady birds hide in sheltered places like trees and under rocks.

You might even find some in your house when it gets colder, when they try to come in and shelter from the cold.

I wonder if you can tell me what this minibeast is.

Tell your screen.

It's so woodlouse minibeasts, that's right.

Where have you seen woodlouse before? I'm sure you found some in your garden or outside before.

Where have you seen woodlice before? Tell your screen.

Lots of you were saying that you found them under logs, and under stones outside, and you are right.

Woodlouse like dark places, like hiding under rocks and logs.

They like dump places, which means they like things, that are a little bit wet as well.

Woodlice eat dead plants and fungi.

So they like to live close to these things, that's why they like to be underneath the logs on the rotting side, and they like to eat dead things off the woodland floor.

I'm sure all of you have know what this one is.

A wiggly wiggly wag.

Can you show me wiggly wag impression? Wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle, wiggle, good job.

Just like woodlice, worms also love to live in damp places, which means it's, it's a bit wet.

What does that mean? When it's a bit wet, that's right.

You can usually find worms anywhere that there is soil.

If you just dig around in the soil, you'll soon find a worm.

Just like Woodlice, worms also like to eat dead plants.

Seeing they like the same food as woodlice, you'll often find them living in the same place, in the same habitat.

So they might be under rocks, and stones as well.

Oh, here's a fun minibeast, what's this one? That's right, a caterpillar.

Caterpillars like to live surrounded by leaves, where they can hide by camouflaging, with the colour of the leaves.

Camouflaging means that they blend in, with the background, a bit like I do with my background.

My top is a similar colour to the wall.

So I'm kind of camouflaged in the wall here.

Caterpillars love to eat leaves and plants.

That's why they like to live in a habitat, with lots and lots of different leaves and plants.

Now that we've learned so much about different kinds of minibeasts, what they like to eat, and where they like to live, we are going to have a go at creating a bug hotel.

Do any of you know what a bug hotel is? Tell your screen.

A bug hotel is somewhere where minibeasts can come and stay, and they can live happily with lots of different food, and shelter for them, that's right.

To make a bug hotel, we need to think about all of the different things that are minibeasts like.

We need to make sure we have some soil for the worms, lots of leaves for the caterpillars and lady birds, and lots of sticks and stones for the woodlice and ants to hide under.

So let's get started on making up our bug hotel.

You can see here, I've got a box with lots of different containers.

I'm going to pour in my soil, remember woodlice and worms like the soil don't make, this is damp, and they can hide down there in the dark.

So we've got some soil for the woodlice and the worms, I've got leaves as well.

Lots of our minibeasts like to eat leaves, ants, worms like to eat dead leaves.

And ladybirds and caterpillars, they like to be surrounded by lots and lots of leaves.

Now, remember as well before you go picking any leaves, you need to ask a parent or a carer, which leaves you're allowed to take.

I took ones that I just found lying on my floor in the garden, or I found some weeds that I picked.

So I've got lots and lots of leaves.

And now I've got a couple of sticks as well, and I just found these on the ground in my garden too.

'Cause I know that ants like stick, and the woodlice like to live underneath sticks too.

And finally some stones as well.

So I've got, it's almost like I've got lots of different rooms in my bug hotel.

Some of my rooms have sticks, some have stones, some have leaves, some have soil, and I'm even mixing some of the stones in with the soil, and the leaves, so that the minibeasts can live together.

And I'm going to a mix them, put them all closer together.

Just add a few more leaves, so that there's plenty of food for more minibeasts.

So you can see here that I've completed my bug hotel.

I added some more soil to the bottom, I even added a new compartment with half of it full of stones, and the other half leaves.

So you can see I've got lots of dark damp soil for my worms and my woodlice, I've got stones for them to hide under, and I've got lots of leaves and sticks for my ants, my lady birds and my caterpillars to eat.

So have a think about making sure you've got different spaces for different minibeasts in your bug hotel.

Pause the video here, create your bug hotel, and come back when you're finish.

Well done everyone, I hope you're super proud of your bug hotel.

It looks really incredible, and I'm sure you'll get lots of different minibeasts coming to stay, for a little holiday at your bug hotel.

I wonder if there's anything you could do to make it even better.

I was thinking back to mine and I thought, I didn't really have that many sticks or logs in there, or big stones.

Maybe next time I could look for some of those to add as well.

What could you do to improve your bug hotel? Tell your screen, those are some really good ideas.

Make sure you watch over the next couple of days and weeks, to see what minibeasts live in your bug hotel, and how you can make it better, bye everyone.
