Hello superstars! I'm Ms. Brittain and this is my talk partner Cedric who's going to be helping us with our work on telling amazing stories.

I just love stories.

Do you love stories, Cedric? Oh he does.

Do you love stories, children? Wow, we're going to have so much fun together.

Now before me and Cedric tell a story we like to say our story telling chant.

Shall we tell them Cedric? Shall we tell them about our chant? He thinks we should.

It goes like this.

It's story time, it's story time.

Look, listen, wow.

You can try it any time.

It's story time, it's story time.

Look, listen, wow.

In today's lesson, you are going to be listening to and joining in with a story.

And this is going to help us with our writing later on in the unit.

Well what will we do in today's lesson? Well fist, we'll listen to and join in with a nursery rhyme.

And then you'll listen to and join in with the story because I need you to help me be a super storyteller.

And then we're going to answer some questions about our story.

For this lesson you will need a piece of paper and a pencil, you eyes and your ears, and your teddy talk partner.

And if you don't have one, you can always use something else.

You can pause the video here to go and get whatever you need.

First let's start with a nursery rhyme.

Me and Cedric absolutely love nursery rhymes.

Don't we Cedric? And the one we're going to sing today is a clue as to where our story is set.

And it's called Old McDonald Had A Farm.

You love this one don't you Cedric.

What's that? Can we do actions? Of course we can.

Now I'll sing it first with Cedric, and then you could join in afterwards if you'd like.

Are you ready? ♪ Old McDonald had a farm ♪ ♪ E I E I O ♪ Your turn.

It's finally time to listen to our story, The Giant Turnip.

This story is from Russia.

I challenge you to see if you can find Russia on a map of the world with your parent or carer.

I'll give you a clue.

It's really big, just like the turnip in our story.

Now get your eyes and listening ears ready.

Once upon a time, there was a farmer who lived in a house on a farm with his wife, his son Jack, his daughter Jill, a sheep dog, and a mouse.

One day he went out into this field and he planted a turnip seed.

And every day he watered it.

The roots went down, the shoots came up, and soon the seed was the size of a nut.

Then a tomato, then a potato, then the size of a head.

But still the turnip got bigger, and bigger, and bigger.

One day the farmer's wife said, "Pull up that turnip, we'll have it for our tea." So the farmer went outside and he grabbed hold of the turnip.

And pulled, and he sang, ♪ Heave ho heave ho pull the turnip free ♪ ♪ Heave ho heave ho we'll have it for our tea ♪ but the turnip did not budge.

Confused, the farmer shouted to his wife for help.

"Come and help me pull up this turnip." So the farmer grabbed the turnip, the wife grabbed the farmer, and they pulled and they sang, ♪ Heave ho heave ho pull the turnip free ♪ ♪ Heave ho heave ho we'll have it for our tea ♪ But the turnip did not budge.

The farmer was feeling quite angry by this point.

So his wife called for her son Jack.

"Come and help us pull up this turnip." And so the farmer grabbed the turnip, the wife grabbed the farmer, Jack grabbed his mother, and they pulled and they sang, ♪ Heave ho heave ho pull the turnip free ♪ ♪ Heave ho heave ho we'll have it for our tea ♪ And they pulled and they sang, but the turnip did not budge.

That's right.

By now the farmer and his wife were feeling fed up and a bit sad so Jack called for his sister Jill.

And Jill came out to help.

The farmer grabbed the turnip, his wife grabbed the farmer, Jack grabbed his mother, and Jill grabbed Jack.

And they heaved and they pulled, and they sang, ♪ Heave ho heave ho pull the turnip free ♪ ♪ Heave ho heave ho we'll have it for our tea ♪ That's right, well done.

But the turnip didn't budge.

By this time, the farmer, his wife, and Jack were feeling tired.

So Jill called for the sheep dog.

I what will happen next.

The farmer grabbed the turnip, the wife grabbed the farmer, Jack grabbed his mother, Jill grabbed Jack, and the sheep dog grabbed Jill.

And they pulled and they sang, ♪ Heave ho heave ho pull the turnip free ♪ ♪ Heave ho heave ho we'll have it for our tea ♪ But the turnip did not budge.

But by this time, the farmer was determined and that means he didn't want to give up.

So Jill and the sheep dog called for a mouse.

And the mouse came to help.

I wonder, what do you think might happen next? The farmer grabbed the turnip, the wife grabbed the farmer, Jack grabbed his mother, Jill grabbed Jack, the sheep dog grabbed Jill, and the mouse grabbed the sheep dog, and they pulled and they sang, ♪ Heave ho heave ho pull the turnip free ♪ ♪ Heave ho heave ho we'll have it for our tea ♪ And this time, the turnip popped out.

Wow.

They all jumped and they cheered.

Finally the turnip was free.

That evening the wife chopped up the turnip, poured it into a pot, and they all enjoyed a delicious hot steamy bowl of turnip stew.

And after that, they sang, ♪ Heave ho heave ho we pulled the turnip free ♪ ♪ Heave ho heave ho we had it for our tea ♪ ♪ Heave ho heave ho now it's time to go ♪ ♪ Heave ho heave ho now it's time to go ♪ Oh I love that story because it's all about teamwork and working together.

I going to get Cedric and see what he thought about it.

Cedric did you enjoy the story? Oh he did.

I loved the story.

Children did you enjoy the story? What was your favourite part Cedric? Oh Cedric loved when they all had the turnip stew for their tea.

My favourite part was when the mouse came out and they all worked together and they pulled the turnip and it popped out after all their hard work.

What was your favourite part of the story? Can you tell your teddy talk partner what you favourite part of the story was? Can you say it in a full sentence? My favourite part of the story was.

Oh I loved all of those parts too.

Now we're going to be answering some questions about the story.

We're going to do this by looking at a plot matrix.

Now a plot matrix helps us to think about all the different things that happens in our story.

Who's involved, where it happens, what the problems are.

And we're going to work on this together.

So let's have a think about where is our story set? Where does everything happen? Does it happen in a zoo? No, you're right, it doesn't happen in a zoo.

Does it happen in a school? Or is it a farm? That's right children, it's a farm.

And I've drawn a picture of a farm there.

Who is the main character in our story? Is it a teacher? No it's not a teacher.

Is it a police officer? Or is it a farmer? Can you tell the screen who it is children? That's right, it's a farmer.

And what is his problem? What is his problem? I remember.

The turnip's stuck, he can't get it out.

So for this, I've drawn a turnip stuck in the ground.

Just like this one, except much, much bigger.

Now, for the farmer to be able to get the turnip out the ground, he needed lots of help.

Who were his helpers? I remember one helper.

It was his wife.

His wife was a helper.

Can you pause the video here and tell you teddy talk partner who another helper was? You could even leave it paused for a little minute and draw the little helper.

Well done children.

You might have drawn the mouse.

He helped at the end.

Jack or Jill.

Or even the sheep dog.

Wow well done children.

Our next box is all about the solution.

And solution means how was the problem solved.

Well I think this story is all about teamwork.

So they worked together and they all pulled the turnip together.

So that's our solution, teamwork.

And the ending.

Who can remember what happened in the ending? What did they do? Can you tell your screens now what happened in the ending? That's right children, they all enjoyed some delicious turnip stew.

And I've drawn some stew.

Now if you want to, you can copy up this plot matrix box.

But if not, and you want to carry on, that's fine.

But if you'd like to, pause the video now.

Children well done for today.

You have been amazing.

I've loved telling the story with you today.

I hope you enjoyed it too.

My favourite part of the lesson was when we got to sing the song in the story.

Which bit did you enjoy? Can you tell your teddy talk partner the part of the lesson that you enjoyed? Now tomorrow is going to be really exciting because you're going to become a storyteller too.

And I can't wait for that.

There's a few things you could do before tomorrow's lesson, if you'd like to.

You could draw a picture of your favourite part in the story.

Or your favourite character.

Or you could practise the song from our story.

♪ Heave ho heave ho pull the turnip free ♪ ♪ Heave ho heave ho we'll have it for our tea ♪ Now before I go, I'd like to leave you with a vegetable riddle.

And then tomorrow I'll share the answer with you.

A scarf around a snowman's neck.

His eyes are coal or a pebble.

He has two branches for his arms. His nose is this vegetable.

Have a think and see if you can guess what it is before tomorrow's lesson.

Well done on your amazing storytelling skills today.

If you'd like to, you can ask a parent or a carer to share your work so that I can see all the fantastic things that you've been doing.

I can't wait for our second lesson tomorrow.

See you there everybody.
