Hello, I am Adam, and this is Panda.

And we are now on units five, lesson one, using the story Mouse Deer.

Let's see what's on the agenda today.

So our warm-up today, is going to be nursery rhymes that have a lot of rain in them.

And that's because the setting to our new story has a lot of rain in it.

It's going to be a tropical rain forest.

After that, Panda and I will introduce you to the characters and you can listen and join in with the story of Mouse Deer.

Later in the session, you will need a piece of paper and something to draw with.

But you won't need that for awhile.

Right, let's move on to the warm-up.

Can you hear that sound? The sound of rain.

That's the sound in the story today.

When we hear the story of Mouse Deer the sound of rain is all around.

the sound around is now.

So let's sing some nursery rhymes with rain in them.

Are you ready Panda? Here we go.

♪ Doctor Foster went to Gloucester ♪ ♪ In a shower of rain ♪ ♪ He stepped in a puddle ♪ ♪ Right up to his middle ♪ ♪ And never went there again ♪ We should do that again.

I think it's time, Panda and I introduce you to the characters and some of the things that will be happening in this tropical rain forest for the story.

Here we go.

Hi there, Panda and I are over here.

A blue screen but only for a moment.

I'm going to give you some clues as to what this first character might be.

Let's just think of it as an animal, first.

So, this animal is scary, likes hunting for food, has a orange-y red furry coat with black stripes, and roars! That's right, it's a tiger.

And Tiger is one of the main characters in this story.

Tiger.

Now, Tiger is hunting for food in this story.

And you may not have seen this animal before, so she's a little bit like a, a dog, a deer, little bigger than a dog.

But if you're ever seen a young deer, that has whiskers, like a mouse.

So you could picture her.

She's called a mouse deer.

That's how you write it there, mouse deer.

And it's a real animal.

We don't see them over here, except perhaps in the wild life park.

So tiger, a mouse deer, are the animals in this story.

There's a few other things, there's a big, muddy, sludgy puddle, that's important in this story.

There's a tree with a wasps nest hanging from it.

So that's crops up in the story.

And finally, there's a long slithery shiny snake.

So there you are, the animals that are in the story.

Let's talk about some of the things that happen where you can join in with the story.

Let me do that next.

So before I share with you the story of Mouse Deer, can I ask you to join in with one of the bits of the story.

You see, Mouse Deer sings a song and it goes.

♪ I'm quick and I'm sharp ♪ ♪ And I have no fear ♪ ♪ Who am I ♪ ♪ I'm the little mouse deer ♪ Shall I do it again? ♪ I'm quick and I'm sharp ♪ ♪ And I have no fear ♪ ♪ Who am I ♪ ♪ I'm the little mouse deer ♪ Could you sing along with me? ♪ I'm quick and I'm sharp ♪ ♪ And I have no fear ♪ ♪ Who am I ♪ ♪ I'm the little mouse deer ♪ ♪ I'm quick and I'm sharp ♪ ♪ And I have no fear ♪ ♪ Who am I ♪ ♪ I'm the little mouse deer ♪ So in that bit, happens in the story, could you join in? Either singing out loud or singing in your head.

Now, when I tell this story as well, it's going to be in a setting of a rain forest a lush green place with lots of trees and vegetation, and the sound of rain.

Okay, I hope you enjoy the story.

♪ It's story time ♪ ♪ it's story time ♪ ♪ look, listen, learn ♪ Once in a rain forest, damp, lush, and green, a big hungry tiger went hunting unseen.

Around him the sound of rain striking the leaves, then a soft, sweet voice sang out through the trees.

♪ I'm quick and I'm sharp ♪ ♪ And I have no fear ♪ ♪ Who am I ♪ ♪ I'm the little mouse deer ♪ ♪ I'm quick and sharp ♪ ♪ And I have no fear ♪ ♪ Who am I ♪ ♪ I'm the little mouse deer ♪ Tiger peered, and he saw the creature quite small, just a bit bigger than a dog, and with whiskers like a mouse.

It was the Mouse Deer, and Tiger was hungry.

He pounced with a roar! " Mouse Deer! I'm going to eat you up for my breakfast." " ", said Mouse Deer.

"I would love to be your breakfast, dear Tiger.

But I'm too busy to be breakfast because I'm guarding the king's pudding." "The king's pudding?", said the Tiger.

"Where is the king's pudding?" Mouse Deer pointed with her paw on to the ground where there's a big, muddy, sludgy puddle.

"Here it is.", she said.

"It's all chocolatey, and creamy, and yummy, and sweet.

The king loves his chocolate pudding." "Oh.", said the Tiger.

"Could I try some of the king's pudding?" " ", sighed the Mouse Deer.

"You could try but I would have to skedaddle." So the Mouse Deer skedaddled, disappeared into the trees.

And the Tiger took his paw and he scooped up some of the king's pudding.

" Mmm, Yuck! That's not pudding! That's mud!" And now, the Tiger was really angry.

Once in a rain forest, damp, lush, and green, a big hungry tiger went hunting unseen.

Around him the sound of rain striking the leaves and then a sweet a sound ringing out through the trees.

♪ I'm quick and I'm sharp ♪ ♪ And I have no fear ♪ ♪ Who am I ♪ ♪ I'm a little mouse deer ♪ ♪ I'm quick and sharp ♪ ♪ And I have no fear ♪ ♪ Who am I ♪ ♪ I'm a little mouse deer ♪ Tiger could see the mouse deer, and he pounced, " Mouse Deer, I did not have you for breakfast, but I'm going to eat you now for my lunch." " Tiger, I'd really like to be your lunch.

I'm sorry though, I'm too busy.

I'm guarding the king's drum." "The king's drum? Where is it?" Mouse Deer pointed to a tree and on the side of the tree was a wasps nest.

"It's just here.", said Mouse Deer.

"If you hit the tree here, on the king's drum, the drum vibrates, the tree vibrates, the ground vibrates, and everybody wants to dance!" "Oh.", said Tiger.

"Please, can I hit the king's drum?" " ", said the Mouse Deer.

"You could but I would have to skedaddle." So the Mouse Deer skedaddled.

And the Tiger got his paw and he pawed it right back so he could hit the drum really hard.

And with a great big.

He hit the king's drum.

Well, the wasps inside the nest, they were angry! And they started to sting Tiger! "Oh! Ah! Oh! Ah! Oh! Ah!", that poor old Tiger.

It took him a long time to flick off all the wasps.

And by the time that he had, he was a very, very, very, angry, hungry, Tiger.

Once in a rain forest, damp, lush, and green, a great hungry tiger went hunting unseen.

Around him the sound of rain striking the leaves.

Then, through the air he heard a soft singing.

It came drifting through the trees.

♪ I'm quick and I'm sharp ♪ ♪ And I have no fear ♪ ♪ Who am I ♪ ♪ I'm a little mouse deer ♪ ♪ I'm quick and sharp ♪ ♪ And I have no fear ♪ ♪ Who am I ♪ ♪ I'm the little mouse deer ♪ Tiger followed the sound.

And then, he saw the Mouse Deer.

And he pounced with an all mighty roar.

"Mouse Deer, I did not eat you for breakfast, I did not eat you for lunch, but I am going to eat you for my evening dinner." "Tiger, I would love to help you.", said the Mouse Deer.

"I'd really like to but I'm too busy guarding the king's belt." "What?", said the Tiger.

"The king's belt? Where is it?" The clever little mouse deer pointed to a rock and on the rock, all curled up, was a long, shiny, scaly, snake.

"Here it is.", she said.

"Oh, the king loves this belt.

He puts it on and it's so colourful!" "Oh.", said the Tiger.

"I want to try on the king's belt." "All right then.", said the Mouse Deer.

"But I would have to skedaddle." So the mouse deer , skedaddled.

And Tiger picked up the king's belt and he started to wrap it around himself.

But as he did so, Snake woke up.

She started to coil herself around the tiger, until the tiger could no longer move.

The tiger roared for help! And as the snake opened its mouth and looked Tiger in the face, they say the last sound that Tiger heard, was the sound of the sweet singing, that came through the trees.

♪ I'm quick and I'm sharp ♪ ♪ And I have no fear ♪ ♪ Who am I ♪ ♪ I'm the little mouse deer ♪ And that was the end of Tiger.

Panda and I are over here.

Did you enjoy the story? It's one of Panda's favourites.

Now, lots of very funny things happened in the story and it's your turn to work now.

I would like you to choose your favourite moments of the story, whatever it might be.

Panda likes the moment when Tiger tries to eat the king's pudding and goes, "Yuck!" And I like the bit when he's being stung by wasps.

Now, we've chosen to put these pictures up just in case some of you would like to use them, to look at, before you draw.

But it's completely fine if you'd like to draw them from your imagination too.

And for those of you that want to, they are the words, mouse deer and tiger.

So, time to work.

Your job is to draw your favourite moments of the story.

When you're done, we'll talk about what's going to happen next.

Good luck, time to work.

So how was that? We wonder what your favourite moments were.

Remember you can always share your work with us here at Oak Academy, your carers and teachers, they'll know what to do.

And we'd love to see it.

So please do send your lovely work in.

Well, we've done a lot of things today.

We started to think about the setting for the story.

So we sang nursery rhymes with rain! We also introduced the characters, and we met Tiger and Mouse Deer.

I told you the story and you joined in with the song, and you've chosen your favourite moments.

So we've started our journey to be story tellers.

So by lesson five of this unit, you can tell this story by yourself.

It's quite a challenge.

For now though, keep sharing your pictures with your friends, and your families, and your teachers.

And we look forward to seeing you in the next lesson where we're going to start to think about the sounds of the forest, the way that the animals move, and importantly, we're going to draw a story map of this story.

Until then, bye bye!.
