Hello everyone.

My name is Miss Barron and I love stories.

I love telling stories, I love listening to stories, and I love writing stories.

In this unit, we are going to learn and work with one of my favourite stories.

Now, I'm not going to tell you what it is yet, because I want to keep it a surprise until a little bit later.

In this unit, we are learning about character and why character is important for us as great storytellers and great story writers.

And so to help us think about that a bit more, I've made up a song.

Now, I would like you to listen to me sing the song first, and then you're going to join in with me a second time.

So, are you ready? It goes like this.

♪ We are learning about character, character, character ♪ ♪ We are learning about character ♪ ♪ Characters we care about ♪ ♪ We need to care about character, character, character ♪ ♪ We need to care about character to make our stories great ♪ ♪ We need to show what we say and do, say and do, say and do ♪ ♪ We need to show what we say and do ♪ ♪ So we know what they're like ♪ ♪ We need to show what they think and feel ♪ ♪ Think and feel, think and feel ♪ ♪ We need to show what they think and feel ♪ ♪ So we care what happens to them ♪ ♪ So who is the character we'll meet today ♪ ♪ Meet today, meet today ♪ ♪ Who is the character we'll meet today ♪ ♪ It's the Unlucky Man ♪ So I've given you a clue there about our story and who the character is in our story.

We're going to meet a character today called The Unlucky Man.

Now, I would like you to join in with me this time and sing that song a second time.

Are you ready? I think you can join in, and do the actions too.

Let's go.

♪ We are learning about character, character, character ♪ ♪ We are learning about character ♪ ♪ Characters we care about ♪ ♪ We need to care about character, character, character ♪ ♪ We need to care about character ♪ ♪ To make our stories great ♪ ♪ We need to show what they say and do ♪ ♪ Say and do, say and do ♪ ♪ We need to show what they say and do ♪ ♪ So we know what they're like ♪ ♪ We need to show how they think and feel ♪ ♪ Think and feel, think and feel ♪ ♪ We need to show how they think and feel ♪ ♪ So we care what happens to them ♪ ♪ So, who is the character we'll meet today ♪ ♪ Meet today, meet today ♪ ♪ Who is the character we'll meet today ♪ ♪ It's ♪ ♪ The Unlucky Man ♪ So today you are going to listen and respond to the story of The Unlucky Man.

This is what's going to happen in the lesson.

First, we're going to do a quick spelling activity.

Then it's Story time, and I'm going to tell you the story.

And after that, we're going to Plot matrix the story.

So we're going to talk about it a bit together and check our understanding of the story.

So in this lesson, you will need something to write on, a piece of paper or an exercise book, and a pencil or a pen to write with.

So pause the video now and go and get those things if you need to.

Fabulous.

You are ready to start the learning today.

Now let's begin with our spelling activity.

I would like you to have a look, at the words in the white boxes on your screen.

What do you notice about the ending of these words? And how do they change the meaning of the words? I'd like you to pause the video now and have a think about that, and you're going to tell me in a few moments.

What did you notice about the ending of these words? Tell me in a full sentence starting, these words end in, go on tell me with your screen now.

Well done.

Well remembered.

These words all end in suffixes, don't they? And what is a suffix? Can you remind me.

Say a suffix is, go on, tell me to your screen again.

Fantastic.

A suffix is a letter or group of letters that we add to the end of a word to change its meaning.

Now, I know you've already learned about these suffixes in previous units, so I'm not going to go into them in any more detail today.

But I would like you to notice that when we add these suffixes, the spelling of the root word does not change.

Today, we are going to be learning about a suffix, where the spelling of the roots word does change when we add it to the end of the word.

So let's have a look at this suffix.

This suffix is, -ied.

When we add it to the end of a word, then the spelling of the root word changes, and I want you to see if you can work out how.

So have a look at the words in the green box to help you.

Can you work out the rule? How does the spelling of the root word change when we add -ied? Pause the video now and see if you can work it out.

How did you get on? See if you can tell me in a full sentence.

Say, I think the rule is.

Go on, tell me to your screen.

Let's see if you're right, shall we? So, the rule is that if the word ends in 'y' with a consonant before the 'y', then when we add -ied we have to drop the 'y'.

Now remember, a consonant is any other letter of the alphabet that is not a vowel.

There are five vowels in our alphabet, a, e, i, o, u.

All the other letters are called consonants.

So, if the word ends in a 'y' with a consonant before it, when we put -ied on the end we have to drop the 'y'.

Let's take a look at that with some other words in the green box.

So, if we take the word, hurry, the root word is hurry.

When we add -ied we drop the 'y' and it becomes hurried, putting the verb in the past tense.

So, in a sentence that might be, I hurried to school this morning, and this is what I would like you to do today.

I would like you to have a look at the words in the table and see if you can spot the incorrect spellings and fix them.

When you come across one that doesn't look right.

I want you to say these two sentences out loud,.

is incorrect.

It should be spelt.

So pause the video now and have a go at that.

How did you get on with that? Here are the answers in the table for you to check your work.

Now, what I would like you to do, is one final part of your spelling activity today, is to make up three sentences using these words, ending in -ied in the table.

So you might want to write a story sentence, or you might want to make up a silly sentence, up to you.

Here are my examples.

Kartikeya was jealous when Ganesh married the princess.

The shark hid in the seaweed and spied on his friends.

So pause the video now, and make up three of your own sentences, using these words in the table.

Now it's time to listen to our story.

So make sure you're sitting somewhere comfortable.

Make sure you're sitting somewhere quiet, and let's begin with our story chant.

Join in when you're ready.

♪ It's story time.

♪ ♪ It's story time ♪ ♪ Look, listen, learn ♪ ♪ It's story time ♪ ♪ It's story time ♪ ♪ look, listen, learn ♪ This is the story of the Unlucky Man.

The story of the Unlucky Man.

One of my favourite stories.

Now, I wonder what your favourite moment was.

Can you have a think, and tell in your screen in a full sentence.

Say, my favourite moment was, go on tell your screen now.

Ah! So, lots of different favourite moments.

Really interesting.

My favourite moment is the ending.

I really like when the wolf eats him up, because for me, he kind of gets what he deserves.

So, let's unpick this story now in a bit more detail.

We're going to have a talk about it together.

Okay.

So now we've heard the story.

We are ready to talk about it together and check our understanding of it, and we're going to do that using a really useful tool called the Plot Matrix.

And so the Plot Matrix looks like this.

The first thing that I would like you to do is to draw your six box grid on your piece of paper and write the correct heading in each box.

So you should have a Plot Matrix on your piece of paper that looks like the one on your screen.

Pause the video now and do that.

Fantastic job.

Now we're ready to start filling in our Plot Matrix.

So as I said, the Plot Matrix is a really useful tool, for helping us to understand stories.

So let's look at that first box.

Where? Where is the story set? Where does it take place? Now, if you think you know already, start drawing a simple quick picture in that box.

If you're not sure, choose from one of these options.

Is the story of the Unlucky Man set in the forest? Is it sets in the desert? Or is it set on the mountain? Pause the video now, and draw your picture.

Good job.

Now, let's see how we got on.

Can you tell me in a full sentence, the story is set, go on tell your screen now.

Brilliant.

Well done.

The story is set on the mountain, isn't it? So here's my picture of the mountain to show you.

You can see how simple it is, and I've written the word mountain too in that box.

You can do that, you don't have to, up to you.

Now, let's move on to the next box.

So our next box has the heading.

Who? Which is all about character.

So I would like you to pause the video now and draw a picture of the characters in our story.

Let's see how you got on.

Go on, tell me in a full sentence, who the characters are.

Say, the characters in our story are.

Tell me to your screen.

Well done.

You are right.

There are five characters in our story because we have our main character, the Unlucky Man, and then the four characters that he meets on the mountain.

So let's have a look at my picture.

There he is.

There's the Unlucky Man, looking very grumpy and miserable, very unlucky with his hands on his hips.

And then we have the four characters he meets on the mountain.

First, he meets the thin, sick, old Wolf.

Then he meets the thin, leafless tree.

Then he meets the lovely young woman and finally the wise old man at the top of the mountain.

And he meets the woman, the tree and the wolf on his way back down as well, doesn't he? Well done.

Let's move on to our next box.

So the next box is, problem.

What do you think the problem is, in the story? Now, remember problems are hard to solve and they really matter to the character.

So have a think.

What do you think the problem is for the Unlucky Man? Pause the video now and draw your picture.

Well done.

Okay.

I'm ready to hear your ideas.

What did you think? Can you tell me in a full sentence? The problem is, go on tell me to your screen.

Okay.

Interesting.

I heard a few different ideas then.

Let me talk you through my picture.

So you can see I've drawn a downwards arrow and a cross through a four-leaf Clover.

Four-leaf clovers are symbols of good luck.

So those two pictures showed that the problem for the Unlucky Man is that he believes he has no luck, whatsoever.

And a big part of that problem is shown by the cross through the eyes.

That shows that he doesn't notice anything good around him.

He doesn't notice anything good in his life, and that's why he believes he's so unlucky.

So that's the problem for the Unlucky Man.

Now let's have a think about whether or not that problem gets solved.

So here's your solution box.

What do you think? Does the Unlucky Man find his luck or not? Pause the video now and draw a picture in your solution box to show what you think.

Well done.

So let's have a look at this.

This one's a bit trickier.

Now here's my picture.

First, you can see the wise man.

and that's to show, that after he visits the wise man, he does think that his problem is going to get solved, and so do we.

We think," Oh, he's going to start looking around him and he's going to find his luck." And then when all of that luck gets offered to him, as he goes down the mountain.

First the young woman offers to marry him.

Then the tree offers him all of his buried treasure.

He could have all the luck in the world.

But he doesn't take any time to notice what's right in front of his face, does he? So therefore, there is no solution for the Unlucky Man.

His problem does not get solved.

So, what happens as a result of that? What happens at the end of our story? Have a think, and draw your picture in the Ending box.

Pause the video and do that now.

Go on then, tell me what happens at the end of the story.

Start your sentence, at the end of the story.

Go on, tell your screen now.

You're absolutely right.

At the end of the story the sick, old wolf eats up the Unlucky Man, doesn't he? So this is my picture to show that.

Now, I have a question for you about the ending.

Do you think the Unlucky Man deserved what he got? Did he deserve to be eaten by the Wolf? Have a think now.

Think of a reason to justify your answer.

Pause the video and have a think and get ready to tell me in a few moments.

Okay.

I am ready to hear your ideas.

So, I would like you to tell me in your full sentence.

He did or did not deserve what he got because.

Go on, tell your screen.

Oh, very interesting.

Lots of different opinions there.

So, I think, he did deserve what he got because he was a real fool.

He got offered all of that great luck on the way down the mountain and he just didn't even take any time to notice or to listen to what they were saying.

So I think he did.

But I really liked the ending of this story.

So, it's quite unexpected, isn't it ? It's real sudden twist at the end of the story.

We don't expect that to happen to him.

He's talking to the wolf.

He says, "Oh, you need to eat the first food that comes along." And the Wolf does just that.

So, for me the ending of the story really works.

I think it's really satisfying.

I wonder what you think about the end of the story.

Maybe that's something for you to have a think about.

Maybe you could discuss it with somebody else in your household.

So let's move on to the last box in our Plot Matrix.

The learning.

What do you think you learned from this story? And that might be different for everybody.

What did you learn? So I would like you to pause the video now and draw a picture in your final box.

Okay.

Now I'm really interested to hear your thoughts about this.

So again, tell me in a full sentence.

I learned that.

Tell to your screen.

Okay.

A few different ideas there.

So this is what I learned from this story.

This is what I think the learning is, and I actually think it's really powerful learning.

The learning for me, and I'll show you my picture, is that we should appreciate what's around us.

We need to appreciate and notice the good things in life, and when we do that we will feel lucky.

And the second thing is that if we believe ourselves to be unlucky, then we'll have bad luck.

But if we believe ourselves to be lucky, then we'll have good luck.

I think there's two things that we learned from this story, and those are two things that I want to take with me into my life from now on.

So I'm going to try really hard to notice all of the good things about my life.

All of the good things around me, so that I feel lucky, and I'm going to try and believe that I am lucky.

I'm going to try and think really positively so that positive things happen to me.

So, that's my learning.

Again, that might be something that you want to think about a bit more, after the lesson today.

You might want to discuss this as well with somebody else at home.

So, that brings us to the end of our Plot Matrix activity.

So I hope you've enjoyed talking about the story with me then.

Now your Plot Matrix should look something a bit like this.

Your pictures don't have to look the same as mine, but they need to reflect what happens in the story.

So you might want to pause the video again here and take a bit more time just to finish Plot Matrix, if you need to.

If you finished it, why not take this time now to talk through the Plot Matrix and remind yourself what happens in the story.

So that brings us to the end of our learning today.

I hope you enjoyed listening to the story of the Unlucky Man.

In the next lesson, you are going to get to become the storyteller yourself.

I am going to teach you to tell that story from memory.

So I really look forward to seeing you then.

And remember I told you that four-leaf clovers are symbols of good luck.

Well, I'm going to finish now by saying, four-leaf Clover.

This lesson's over.

Bye!.
