Oh, hi there.

I'm Mrs. Howley, and this is Cedric.

And you just caught us reading Cedric's diary.

He loves to tell me all about what he's been up to, but sometimes he likes to write it down in a diary.

We're going to be looking at diaries in this unit of work.

Let's get ready for our learning now.

In today's lesson, we're going to listen to a recount.

We're going to do some spelling.

We're going to listen to the text to our recount, and then we're going to create a recount map.

You will need a piece of paper or an exercise book, a pencil or a pen, and your brilliant brain.

Just read in Cedric's diary.

You wouldn't believe the things he's been up to.

He's been having a great time.

Diaries are a great way of recording things that you've said and done and how you think and feel about them.

Cedric, you're right.

We know a song about diaries, will teach it to you now.

The first part goes like this.

♪ When we write our diaries, we're going to be checking our spelling.

And this week, we're going to look at some of our common exception words, our tricky words.

They're the ones that we can't sound out, We've just got to know them.

Let's start off with the word, my.

In this unit of work, we're going to be writing diary entries.

We're going to recount events, clearly, in a diary entry.

We're going to be using the story of The Magic Paintbrush.

Now we learned that story in unit 10.

But don't worry if you've missed that because you can download the story.

Now, we've got a very special visitor.

Ma Liang, the painter himself is here today, and he's going to read you some of his diary.

Well hello there, I'm Ma Liang.

I'm going to read you some of my special diary today from a really important time in my life.

Okay, are you ready? What a few days I've had.

You won't believe what has happened to me.

My life has changed forever.

Yesterday, I woke up from a very strange dream to find a magic paintbrush next to my bed.

I was amazed.

I felt nervous and excited.

As soon as I could, I rushed to the fields so that I could use the paintbrush to help other people.

First, I saw that the people didn't have any water, so I painted a river.

It came to life.

Water splashed everywhere.

Next, I saw that people were hungry, so I painted delicious plates of food.

Next, I saw someone who was homeless and scared, so I painted them a house.

They were so happy.

Everyone was so pleased about my magic paintbrush.

But, last night, the king's men came to steal my paintbrush and threw me in jail.

It was cold and dark, and I felt scared and lonely.

Moments later, I was being called to the palace to help the king.

The magic paintbrush wouldn't work for him.

He wanted me to paint him a golden mountain.

I didn't know what to do.

I knew he was a bad man.

But then, I had an idea.

I drew a big ocean.

Then I drew the golden mountain far away.

Then I drew a big ship for the king and the men to travel on.

Then when they were on the ocean, I drew a giant wave.

That was the end of him.

Now I can use the magic paintbrush to help those that need it.

What was your favourite part of that recount? I liked the bit where heard about how Ma Liang felt when he was in jail.

Now that we've heard the recount, we're going to have a go at mapping it.

Oh, but first, Cedric has asked about the structure of a recount, of a diary entry.

I think we could do a little bit of stepping now.

We'll do it in more detail in the next lesson to help us think about the structure of a recount.

So the basic recap structure goes like this.

That's a big capital I for introduction.

So introduction, first event, second event, third event, conclusion.

So it really tells the events in order.

So now we know the basic structure of a recount.

We can map Ma Liang's diary entry.

We can think about what's in the introduction, what's the first event he recounts, what's the second, what's the third, and what's the conclusion like? This will help us when we want to retell Ma Liang's diary entry.

So at the start of my text, start of my recap, I've got the introduction.

So I'm going to draw that in a big bubble.

That's a really important part.

And in this one Ma Liang talked about his feelings, what an amazing day he'd had.

Amazing few days he'd had.

Okay, and then I'm going to draw an arrow to show that it goes on to our next section, which is event one.

So I'm going to draw a round bubble around that.

And then in event one, he talks of course about getting the magic paintbrush.

And he talked about helping other people with it.

He told us about, can you remember which thing he drew first? The river, that's right.

And also about drawing the plates of food when he saw that people were hungry.

And also, that he when he saw people who were homeless, he drew a house.

And then move on to the next section, which was event two.

Now in event two, can you remember what happens? I want to ask Ma Liang about how he felt at this, because in this section, the magic paintbrush is stolen from him, so I have drawn a line to the magic paintbrush there, and he was thrown into jail.

And he talked about how he felt lonely and sad and scared.

Then it goes on to event three.

And in event three, this was where the greedy king summoned him, called him to the palace.

He wasn't happy because the paintbrush wasn't working.

And then instead of drawing the golden mountain, Ma Liang drew the sea.

Then he drew the mountain.

Then he drew the ship, that the greedy king and his men got on to.

And then he drew the giant wave.

And then he said that was the end of him.

And then we got to, can you remember what that final part was called? The conclusion.

That's right.

We've got the conclusion, when Ma Liang talked about it being a happy life with the magic paintbrush.

That he got to help other people, and that he carried on living a happy life.

So now it's your turn to create your own recount map for Ma Liang's and diary entry.

Wow, what a busy lesson we've had.

In fact, we've done so much, I'm going to have to write it all down in my diary.

I love doing that.

And then we get to write down what we thought, how we felt, and we can look back on it in years to come.
