Hello super-storytellers, and welcome to the English lesson.

My name is Ms Cashin, and this is lesson one of this unit.

So it's our very first lesson all about information text.

In this lesson, you are going to listen to me telling you an information text all about witches.

And then we're going to see if we can map it out and answer some questions about it.

Later in this unit, you are going to invent your very own witch and write an information text about them for a special book, "All About witches".

So let's get started with today's lesson.

We're going to start today's lesson with some spellings, then you're going to hear the information text, all about witches.

And you're going to hear lots of really clear information about witches when we listen to that.

Then we're going to map the information text, and then we're going to use our map to answer some questions about it.

So in this lesson, this is what you're going to need.

You're going to need an exercise book or some paper, and it would be brilliant, if you could get some plain paper for your map.

You're going to need something to write with, a pen or a pencil and of course you're going to need your brilliant brain that hopefully you've got that already.

So if you need any of these things, pause the video now and go and get them.

Well done super-storytellers, you are all ready for our learning.

So let's get started with our spelling.

For our spellings today, we are looking at some common exception words.

Remember, common exception words are common.

We use them all the time.

So we really want to make sure that we can spell them.

But they are exception words, they don't always follow our spelling rules, and we can't always use our sounds to work them out.

So sometimes we just have to know how that's about.

Let's have a look at our first common exception word.

Have a look at it, magnet eyes.

Can you read the word to me? So many super readers.

It is the word every, every, every, every, fantastic.

I can see there, that if I was going to sound this out, it looks like it says every, but that's not really how we say it.

Sometimes we do, but most of the time we just say, every witch or every broomstick.

We don't say every.

So we just have to remember that the r sound is in there, but we don't really say it.

Let's say the letters because we need to remember them.

E-V-E-R-Y, E-V-E-R-Y, E-V-E-R-Y.

Well done, super-storytellers.

Let's have a look at our next common exception word.

Put your magnet eyes on it.

Can you read it to me? Prove, prove.

I will prove witches exist.

Super storytellers, okay.

The word prove, I would expect, p-r-oo, has two os in it, but it doesn't.

It just has one o.

So let's have a look at the letters that are in the word prove.

P-R-O-V-E, P-R-O-V-E, P-R-O-V-E.

Fantastic super-storytellers.

So we've looked at every, which remember every and prove with one o.

Let's have a look at our next common exception word.

We'll have a look.

Can you read it to me? Climb, climb, climb.

I will climb to escape the witch.

Well done super-storytellers.

Okay, climb.

I've got a b at the end.

So we just need to remember that there is a b at the end of the word climb.

And also my, i sound, looks to me like an i sound, but it makes i, so let's remember the letters.

C-L-I-M-B, C-L-I-M-B, C-L-I-M-B.

Fantastic superstars.

Let's have a look at our spelling activity now.

We've looked at three words, every, prove and climb.

But here they've all been jumbled up.

I want to see if you can unravel these letters and putting them back in the right order.

So you can spell the word correctly.

Because our common exception was quite tricky, you might want to write them up a few times.

So they get in your hand, and in your head.

So you pause the video to see if you can unravel these letters.

Well done super-storytellers.

Let's have a look at how these words were spelt.

There they are, every, proof and climb.

You can pause the video again, to see if you need to give yourself three big ticks, or if you made any mistakes, you can cross it out and write it correctly, so you won't make the same mistake next time.

Well done, super-storytellers.

You have worked so hard on our spellings today.

Now, you're going to hear information text all about witches.

Introduction.

There are many types of witches in the world.

There are forest witches, ocean witches, and even city witches.

There are kind witches, wicked witches, and even funny witches.

I am going to tell you about one of the most magical witches of all, the ice witch.

I will tell you about their appearance, how they look.

I will tell you about their habitat, where they live.

And I will tell you how they behave.

Appearance.

Ice witches, are very hard to see because they are almost completely transparent.

Their lips are thin and grey.

Their eyes are completely white and their mouth never smiles.

Their fingers are claw-like with sharp talons at the end, and their feet have sharp talons as well, so that they can grip in the snow and climb up snowy mountains.

They wear completely white clothes, which are very hard to see in the snow, but they never ever wear warm clothes.

They love it when it's freezing cold.

If you ever see an ice witch, you will not forget it.

Habitat.

Ice witches, can only live in very cold climates.

Most ice switches live near the North or the South pole where it is below zero all year round.

Although they sometimes fly to other countries if it is snowing there.

They love to feel the harsh wind on their face and the snow crunching beneath that bare feet.

Each ice witch digs a hole in the snow and the ice and lives down there in a burrow.

However, inside their burrow, they decorate it with the most beautiful and intricate patterns, so it is a lovely place for them to live.

Behaviour.

All day, ice witches sing a sad, screeching song from down in their burrow.

Their song is beautiful, but if you listen to it, you will feel like crying.

At night, they fly across the land in search of food.

They can dive into the freezing ocean and snatch up fish with their sharp claws.

When a snow witch meets a human, they are usually very kind.

But if you upset them, they can turn you into ice, with one hard stare.

If an ice witch feels too hot, they immediately fall asleep.

Conclusion.

Ice witches are fascinating, magical creatures.

I hope you get to meet an ice witch one day, because they are so incredible to see and hear.

They build beautiful burrows, they look so unusual, and they sing a haunting song.

If you read the rest of this book, you can find out about all the other witches in the world.

Now that you've heard our information text, I'm going to map out the information text and then you will have a go at creating your very own map.

I'm now going to map out our information text.

So we started with the introduction, where I said that there are a lot of different witches in the world.

So I'm going to draw the earth, and there are lots of different witches, there were city witches, forest witches, kind witches, wicked witches, but our information text is going to tell you all about the ice witch.

So I'll put a little snowflake there to represent our ice witch.

Then, I described the appearance, which is what the ice witch looks like.

And I start off by saying that they have transparent skin.

That means they are see-through.

There's that unsmiling mouth, so you can see all of their veins, and the blood pumping around their body.

I also described their hair and their face.

I said they have completely white eyes, thin grey lips that never smile, and their hair is made of solid, but beautiful and delicate icicles.

And when we do a map, remember, we're just doing some quick pictures to help us remember.

What else did I say in their appearance? They have see-through transparent skin, they have completely white eyes, these thin grey lips and the delicate icicle hair.

I remember their sharp talons.

Oh my goodness.

So they have sharp talons on their hands, but also on their feet.

And do you remember, one, two, three, four, five toes, that Do you remember what they can do with these sharp talons? Do you remember? That's right, they can stomp through the snow and grip the snow and climb things.

So if they're my introduction, I've explained there are lots of different witches in the world.

And we're now talking about the appearance of the ice witch.

Their skin, their face, their hands and feet.

I remember what else.

What they wear.

Do you remember what kind of clothes does my ice witch wear? They wear completely white clothes and they wear quite summery clothes because they actually love it when they're really, really cold.

So I'm going to give them shorts and a vest.

'Cause those are quite summery clothes and they're completely white, so they're hard to see.

Okay, so I've explained about the ice witches appearance.

We also got some information about their habitat, where they live.

Do you remember where in the world do they live? It was the North pole and the South pole.

So we're going to put and it's a North and South pole and they love it there because they love to feel the harsh wind on their face and the snow crunching beneath their feet.

The rest of us might be quite cold or they find that quite uncomfortable, but the ice witch doesn't.

So that's where in the world they live.

But what kind of home do they live in? That's right, they live in a burrow, which they dig themselves.

So here's my tunnel that they build and here's the burrow under the ice.

So that's the top.

And although they're underground, and that sounds quite sad.

Do you remember what they're do on the walls to make it beautiful? That's right, they use their sharp talons to scratch out some beautiful patterns.

So I'm going to put some really nice patterns on the wall.

A swirl, a flower, some lovely, lovely patterns.

And there is my ice witch down in the burrow.

They're having a good time, but they still didn't smile.

Okay, what do they do during the day in that burrow? Do you remember? They sing their sad and screeching song.

And if you hear that song, this is beautiful, but incredibly sad and it'll make you want to cry.

So that's what they do during the day, they sing the song.

But if you hear it, it will make you want to cry.

And what do they do at night? That's right.

They fly around, and they dive into the ocean and grab fish with their sharp talons.

There's one other bit about their behaviour.

'Cause we've thought about where they live, now we're thinking about their behaviour.

What do they do? They sing during the day, they hunt for fish and other food at night.

What do they do if it gets hot? That's right, they fall asleep.

So I'm going to put a sun here and I'm going to put 'cause the ice witch would fall asleep it was hot.

And then the last part of our behaviour, do you remember what they do if they see human? That's right, they are usually very kind.

But if you upset them, they can turn you into ice, with one hard stare.

Now, I would usually put some pupils in my eyes here, but we know the ice witch has completely white eyes.

I will draw some kind of spell coming out of the eyes, when they turn a human into ice.

We have our conclusion at the end, we don't need to draw a picture for that because our conclusion sums up the information that we've already had in our information text.

Now that you've seen me create my map of the information text, it's time for you to do the same.

You've got my pictures on the screen to help you, but remember, you could always think of your very own pictures to map out the introduction, the ice witches appearance, their habitat and their behaviour.

Well done storytelling superstars, you can pause the video now.

Well done, the superstars, I am sure you have created an amazing story map.

Now we're going to answer some questions using our story map.

For our questions, I have got my map all ready to use.

So you need to make sure you have got your map as well.

Here is our first question.

Where does the witch live? So where in the world does the witch live? And then in that place, what is their home like? Pause the video and use your map to answer this question.

Well done storytelling superstars, lets have a look.

Where does the witch live? I can see from my map that they live in the North or the South pole, or they sometimes, they fly to other snowy places and then they live in a burrow.

How do they make that burrow? Can you tell me? I had lots of learners say that they make that burrow, with their sharp talons on their feet and their hands.

And that when they're in that burrow, they decorate it with beautiful and intricate patterns.

Well done super-storytellers, let's have a look at our next question.

Ooh, what a brilliant question.

What is the ice witches' face like? I wonder how much information you can remember from looking at your story map.

So pause the video to answer this question.

Well done super-storytellers, let's have is let's have a look.

Here's the ice witches' face, and I can see that the ice witch has got eyes which are completely white, thin, grey lips that never smile and hair made of solid, but beautiful icicles.

You might also have mentioned the transparent, that means see-through skin.

So you could see all of the veins in their face.

Okay, let's have a look at our next question.

Ooh, what might make you cry? What might the ice switch do that would make you cry? Have a look at your map and see if you can remember.

Oh, I wonder if you're able to get this one storytelling superstars.

The thing that would make you cry is their sad, screeching song.

Do you remember when they sing the song? That's right, it's during the day.

They sing this song all day and it's a beautiful song.

But it might make you cry if you listen to it.

Let's have a look at what's next.

Ooh, what special powers do they have? You might look in more than one box for this one.

So what special powers do they have? Pause the video to answer this question.

Well done storytelling superstars, let's have a look their special powers.

I think the fact that they can fly is a special power.

And I remember this here, because they fly to other countries when it's snowing.

I think it's pretty special that they can create a tunnel just with their hands and feet.

Another special power they have, is that they don't, ooh, losing my map, there we go.

They don't feel the cold or they do, but they really, really like it.

It doesn't feel unpleasant to them, it doesn't bother them and they don't get too cold.

So they wear summary clothes, they can dive into the ocean to catch fish, and of course they can turn you into ice, if you upset them.

So if you ever meet an ice witch, you must be sure not to upset them.

I wonder if you have the energy for a challenge.

How would you react if you saw an ice witch? Have a little think, what would you do? How would you feel? Have a think.

What would you do if you saw an ice witch, how would you react? So many different things to think about.

Can you tell me what you would do? So many different answers.

I heard one learner say that they would run away immediately in case they upset them and they were turned to ice.

I heard somebody else say that they would go up and be kind to them because we know that ice witches are usually very kind to humans.

So they would take that risk.

I heard somebody say that they would ask to go and see that burrow, 'cause they want to see the intricate patterns.

I heard one person say that they would ask them if they could hear that beautiful, but sad song and see if it really does make them cry.

Well done storytelling superstars, you have worked so, so hard in our very first information text lesson.

And you have learned so much about the ice witch.

I am sure when it comes to you writing your own page for our book, "All About Witches", you are going to be absolutely amazing.

So I'd love to see some of your story maps that you have created today.

So remember, you can always share your work with Oak National.

So if you'd like to please ask your parents or carer to share your work on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, tagging @OakNational and #LearnwithOak.

In our next lesson, we are going to learn our information text about the ice witch, off by heart.

So you can say it from memory.

I can't wait.

So I really hope to see you then superstars.

Bye.
