Hi, there.

I'm Mrs. Howley, and I am really pleased to be learning with you as part of this unit.

Now, I love stories.

I love reading stories.

I love listening to stories.

I love telling stories.

I love writing stories.

I wonder what your favourite story is.

Now, I've got a helper and you might have met him before.

His name is Cedric, and he's very shy.

I wonder if you could persuade him to come out of his shell.

Could you say a really quiet, hello, Cedric? Let's try it.

One, two, three.

I think it's worked.

Hello, Cedric.

He's said he can't wait to get learning.

Let's see what we're up to today.

In this lesson, we're going to listen to a new story.

And we're going to respond to that story with a story map.

We're going to start with a nursery rhyme.

Then, yes Cedric, it's your favourite part.

It's story time.

And then we're going to try mapping the story.

You will need a pencil and a piece of paper or an exercise book.

You'll need your brilliant brain, and you might want to bring a teddy talk partner.

Pause the video now, if you need to collect any of those things and then press play when you're ready.

It's time for our nursery rhyme.

We're going to sing today, "Row, row your boat." You might know it.

You're going to need your rowing action.

Can you get that ready? Can you get your oars ready for rowing on the rowing boat? It goes like this.

♪ Row, row, row your boat ♪ ♪ Gently down the stream ♪ ♪ Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily ♪ ♪ Life is but a dream ♪ Can you sing it with me this time? ♪ Row, row, row your boat ♪ ♪ Gently down the stream ♪ ♪ Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily ♪ ♪ Life is but a dream ♪ Well done.

Can you do that with a big grin on your face, showing how merry we are? Let's try it one more time.

♪ Row, row, row your boat ♪ ♪ Gently down the stream ♪ ♪ Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily ♪ ♪ Life is but a dream ♪ You might know a different verse that goes like this.

♪ Row, row, row your boat ♪ ♪ Gently down the stream ♪ ♪ If you see a crocodile ♪ ♪ Don't forget to swim ♪ Could you hear the difference that time? We had to look out for the crocodile and then make a big snap.

Let's try that verse one more time.

♪ Row, row, row your boat ♪ ♪ Gently down the stream ♪ ♪ If you see a crocodile ♪ ♪ Don't forget to scream ♪ Fantastic.

It's time for Cedric's favourite part of the lesson.

It is story time.

Cedric, Cedric! It's story time.

What's the story about today? It's about somebody that loves clothes.

In fact, the person in this story loves clothes more than anything else in the world.

I need something fancy to wear.

Okay.

I'll have a look and see what I've got.

Have a look down there for me, Cedric.

Let's see.

Oh, oh! This is pretty fancy, Cedric.

Oh, yes.

I think the character in the story would love this jacket.

What do you think, Cedric? Oh, yes.

Very fancy.

And I also need my story hat because there's something very magical in this story.

So I like to wear my magic hat.

When we're ready for a story, we say our story chant.

You might have heard it before.

Join in with me.

It's story time.

It's story time.

Look, listen, wow.

It's story time.

It's story time.

Look, listen, wow.

Once upon a time, there was an emperor.

He was very important and he loved new clothes.

He liked to spend and spend and spend his money on new clothes all the time.

He felt very proud of his clothes.

One day, a stranger came to speak to the emperor.

He said, "I'm a tailor.

"and I can make you the best clothes.

"The cloth is so amazing "that only wise people can see it.

"Foolish people can't see it at all." "Wow," said the king.

"Make me some clothes at once.

"I will pay you a big bag of gold." "Certainly," said the tailor.

"They will be ready in one week." The next day, the king sent his servant to go and see what the tailor was doing.

The servant went to the tailor's house and he looked through the window.

He could see the tailor snipping and sewing in thin air.

"Oh, no," thought the servant.

"I can't see the cloth.

"I must be foolish.

"I can't tell the king." So he went back to the emperor and said, "Your majesty, I saw the tailor working.

"The cloth is wonderful." Oh, the king was excited.

The next day, the king sent his minister to go and see what the tailor was doing.

The minister went to the tailor's house and looked through the window.

He could see the tailor snipping and sewing in thin air.

"Oh, no," thought the minister.

"I can't see the cloth.

"I must be foolish.

"I can't tell the king." So he went back to the king and when the king asked what he'd seen, he said, "I saw the tailor working.

"The cloth is magnificent." The king was excited.

The next day the king wanted to see the tailor's work for himself.

So he went to the tailor's house and he looked through the window and he saw the tailor snipping and sewing in thin air.

" Oh, no," thought the king.

"I can't see the cloth.

"I must be foolish.

"I can't tell anyone this." The next day, the tailor arrived with his hands out stretched and said to the king, "Here are your new clothes, your majesty.

"What do you think of them?" The king couldn't see anything.

But he felt so embarrassed.

So he said, "Oh yes, very fine clothes.

"Thank you tailor." "Shall I dress you?" Said the tailor.

"Yes," said the king.

So the king took off his jacket.

He took off his shirt.

He took off his trousers until he was standing in his underpants.

Now, the tailor pretended to put a shirt on the king and pretended to do up the buttons.

"Very good," said the king.

Next, the tailor pretended to put on a pair of trousers and a jacket.

"Very fine," said the king.

The king said, "I will now go and show the crowds "my wonderful new clothes." He walked out in front of the crowds, in his underpants.

The crowd fell silent.

The king looked very pleased with himself.

The people looked at the ground and then a child called out, "Look, the king doesn't have any clothes on!" Everybody started laughing, including the king.

He realised how foolish he'd been.

From that moment, he stopped spending all of his money on clothes and started using some of his money to help the poor.

That was the story of The Emperor's New Clothes.

What was your favourite part of the story? My favourite part of the story was when the emperor was pretending he could see the clothes.

What was your favourite part, Cedric? I wonder if you can guess.

Cedric thought it was very funny when the emperor walked out in front of the crowds in his, pants! It was funny.

What was your favourite part? Could you tell me in a sentence? My favourite part was, great.

I think you're right Cedric.

I think we're ready now to map the story.

We're going to draw some pictures that are going to help us retell the story.

I'm going to have a go first.

So, when I'm mapping the story the first thing I do is draw my scriggly line which will map out the story of The Emperor's New Clothes.

First, I'm going to draw the emperor that we hear about at the start of the story.

I'll give him a big crown, 'cause he loves buying new clothes.

He's very proud of those.

And then he meets the tailor.

And the tailor offers to make him the most amazing clothes, but says that the cloth is very special because only those people that are clever that are wise, can see the cloth.

So then the emperor offers to pay him a big bag of gold.

So then the next day, I'm going to draw my arrow, next day because it's the next part of the story, we have, oh, he sends the servant to the tailor's house to look through the window, to see what the tailor is doing.

And he sees him snipping, that's my pair of scissors and sewing in thin air.

Oh no, the servant is really worried because he can't see the cloth.

So he can't tell the king that.

So he tells the king that the cloth is wonderful.

The king is very excited.

So then the king sends the minister to the tailor's house to look through the window.

And the minister sees him snipping, there's my scissors and sewing in thin air.

Oh no, the minister is very worried that he must be foolish because he can't see the cloth.

And he tells the king that the cloth is looking magnificent.

The king is very excited.

But then the king decides to go and see what the tailor is doing himself.

And he looks through the window.

And he sees the tailor snipping, there's my scissors, and sewing in thin air.

Oh, no! The king must be foolish because he can't see the cloth.

He can't tell anyone.

So, the next day when the tailor comes to the king with the cloth, and I think I'll draw, oh yeah, a coat hanger with the invisible clothes on to trick the king.

The king says, "What wonderful clothes." Even though he can't see anything.

And then the tailor offers to dress the king.

So the king ends up standing in his pants.

I'm going to draw him with a pair of pants on there.

And then the king walks out to the crowds of people wearing nothing but his pants.

The crowd is silent, but then a child shouts out, "The king is just wearing his pants!" And everybody laughs.

There's my map.

Now it's your turn to have a go at creating a map of the story yourself.

That's a really good tip Cedric.

Cedric's asked me to remind you the pictures don't need to be perfect.

It's just so you can remember what happens in the story in order.

Good luck.

Pause the video, then press play when you're ready.

How did you get on? What was your favourite part of today's lesson, I wonder.

What was your favourite part Cedric? Cedric's favourite part was drawing the emperor in his underpants.

Now, we are very excited because in next lesson of this unit you get to be the storytellers of The Emperor's New Clothes.

Now, before we finish, I've got a different version of "Row, row your boat" for our story.

This is something we might sing to the tailor.

It goes like this.

♪ Sew, sew, sew the clothes ♪ ♪ He wants something to wear ♪ ♪ Trick him with your clever plan ♪ ♪ And sew them within air.

♪ We'll learn that in our next lesson.

Have a fantastic day, and we'll see you soon.

Bye.
