Hello, super storytellers.

Welcome to the English lesson.

This is lesson one of unit three, and this unit is all about writing instructions.

My name is Ms. Cashin and together we're going to be learning about a set of instructions that tells us how to defeat the fire giants.

In this lesson, you are going to hear me give you some instructions, then you're going to map out those instructions.

And in our next lesson we will use that map to learn them by memory.

I'm really excited to get going with our instructions.

So let's see what we're going to be doing in our lesson today.

We're going to start our lesson with a spelling activity.

Then you're going to hear the instructions, then map the instructions.

And then we're going to answer some questions about the instructions to check that we've understood them.

These are the things that we need for today's lesson.

You're going to need an exercise book or some paper and it would be brilliant if you had some plain paper for our map.

You're going to need something to write with, a pen or pencil, and you're going to need your brilliant, brilliant brain.

So if you need to go and get any of those things, hopefully you have your brain.

So let's get started with our spellings.

We are learning about common exception words.

These are words that are common, we use them all the time, but they don't follow our spelling rules.

They are exceptions.

So we're going to just have to learn some of these words.

So when we look at them, we're going to think carefully, "What letters are there, and how can I remember them?" Here's my first word.

Can you put your magnet eyes on it? Can you read it to me? Find, find, fantastic.

F-i-n-d.

Say the letters with me, f-i-n-d.

Super-duper spellers, well done.

Let's look at our next common exception word.

Put your magnet eyes on the word.

Can you read it? Can you say it to me? Behind, behind.

Let's look at those letters.

B-e-h-i-n-d.

Can you say it with me? B-e-h-i-n-d.

Fantastic, let's look at our next common exception word.

Put your magnet eyes on this word.

Can you read it? Can you say it to me? Pretty, the word is pretty.

My turn, your turn.

Pretty, pretty, fantastic.

It looks like it says preti, but to actually says pretty.

So when we're spelling the word pretty, we need to think, Puh, ruh, oh, it's an E, actually.

P-r-e-t-t-y.

If I was just trying to use my sounds, I think I would go and puh, ruh, ih, and put an I, but that would be wrong.

So we've got p-r-e-t-t-y.

Fantastic, super spellers.

One last common exception word.

Oh, what's this word? Magnet eyes.

Can you read it? Can you say it? The word is beautiful.

My turn, your turn.

Beautiful, beautiful.

And this is a tricky word because b-e-a-u-t, that's my beaut part of the word, but it's got a lot of vowels there, b-e-a-u.

I have a way that I remember how to spell beautiful.

I say b-e-a-utiful.

Can you say that with me? B-e-a-utiful.

Can we say it one more time, so it's definitely in our heads? B-e-a-utiful.

Fantastic, so if you are going to spell beautiful, you can write b-e-a and then you use the sounds for the rest of the word.

Right, I have got here some jumbled up common exception words.

These are the four words that we've just looked at, but they're all jumbled up.

I wonder if you could un jumble them for me.

So can you pause the video and see if you can write these words out correctly? Well done, super spellers.

Let's have a look at those words.

There they are, so the first one was our b-e-a-utiful, beautiful.

Then find, then behind, and then pretty.

So you can pause the video now and check how you've got on with the spellings.

Whether you can give yourself a tick, or whether you might need to write the spelling down correctly so that you'll get it right next time.

Now we are going to hear a set of instructions.

So I'm going to tell you the instructions, and then we will map it.

Introduction.

I am an expert at catching and defeating giants.

And I'm going to give you some instructions so you can do the same.

I have caught beanstalk giants, I have caught stone giants, and I've caught frost giants.

But my favourite giant to defeat is the fire giants.

Fire giants glow like the sun.

And they sound like burning twigs.

But they can be very dangerous.

If you listen to my instructions, you will be able to defeat the fire giants too.

Equipment.

To catch a fire giant you will need a strong shovel, a tall ladder, a bag of red-hot chilies, a confident singing voice, and a bucket of cold water.

Instructions.

Number one.

First, walk to the fire giant's house.

Number two.

Next, dig a deep hole outside their house.

If the fire giant hears you, stop and hide behind a bush.

Three.

When you have finished the hole, climb out with your ladder.

Four.

Carefully lay a trail of red-hot chilies from the house to the hole.

If you have any chilies left, place them around the edge of the hole.

Five.

Creep back to the giant's house and sing their favourite song.

♪ Fire, fire, I love fire ♪ ♪ Fire is light, and fire is bright ♪ ♪ Fire, fire, I love fire ♪ ♪ Fire is light, and fire is bright ♪ If the giant doesn't come out, sing a bit louder.

♪ Fire, fire, I love fire ♪ ♪ Fire is light, and fire is bright ♪ Six.

Watch the giant eat the delicious chilies and wait until they reach the hole.

Seven.

When the giant is by the edge of the hole, sneak up and push them in.

Eight.

Finally, get your ice bucket and cover the fire giant in ice.

If the fire goes out, you have defeated the fire giants.

Now that you've heard the instructions, the instruction, the equipment we're going to need, and then the instructions themselves.

We're going to map them out.

Now I'm going to map out our instructions.

So for our introduction, we met our expert fire catcher.

Not fire catcher, sorry, giant catcher.

And they said, "Hello, I am an expert at catching giants." And they said that they have caught beanstalk giants, so draw a beanstalk.

They have caught stone giants, and they've even caught frost giants.

So I draw a snowflake there.

Do you remember what they said their favourites giant to catch was? Of course they said, "That my favourite giant to catch is the fire giant." They glow like the sun, and they smell like wood burning, and they sound like crackling twigs, but they can be very dangerous.

So we have to catch them and defeat them.

Then we heard about our equipment.

What was our equipment that we needed? We needed a strong shovel.

We needed a tall ladder.

We needed, oh, their favourite food that's going to lead our giant up to the hole.

What was the food they liked so much? That's right.

It was the red-hot chilli peppers.

That favourite food.

There's a red-hot chilli pepper.

You're going to need a beautiful singing voice.

So they hear the song and they want to come out and listen to it.

And you're going to need a bucket of ice-cold water.

And I'll do a little snowflake again, so we know that this is the ice-cold water.

That's going to put out the dangerous fire giant.

Okay.

So what's the first thing that we need to do in our instructions? That's right.

The first thing we needed to do is to walk to the fire giant's house so I'm going to put my fire giant in a cave.

You might have a different idea about where the fire giant might live.

So first we're going to walk to the fire giant's house.

Hopefully they won't notice us.

Next, we are going to dig a hole.

There's that strong shovel that we need so we can dig our hole.

Once we finish the hole, we're going to use the ladder to get out of the hole.

Then what're we going to do then? We've dug the hole, we've used the ladder.

That's right.

We are going to lay the chilli peppers down a trail so that we can try and get the fire giant to go there.

So here is the house, or the cave.

Here's the hole.

And here are all the chilli peppers.

So, chilli peppers all the way to the hole.

So the giant might look in the hole to see if there are any more chilli peppers.

But how are we going to get the giant to come outside? The giant is in his cave.

Can you remember? We've used the shovel.

We've used the ladder.

We've used the chilli peppers.

We're going to sing the song.

So the fire giant comes out and says, "Who is singing my favourite song all about fire?" And he might even try and join in with the song.

So, we're going to sing the song to try and get him to come out.

♪ Fire, fire, I love fire ♪ ♪ Fire is light, and fire is bright ♪ He will love that.

So, we're hoping that he comes out, and when he does, what is he going to do? That's right.

Here's our fire giant.

He's going to try to eat some of those chilli peppers.

Now we know when we do our mapping, we do quick pictures to help us remember the story.

It's not an art lesson but if you wanted to make your fire giant a bit more exciting than I have, you could do that.

So he's going to eat the chilli peppers all the way up to the hole.

He'll be going, "Oh, so delicious.

I want more and more and more." When our fire giant gets to the hole, there he is.

And he's got a final chilli pepper that he's going to eat, he's thinking, "Oh, delicious, fantastic." When he gets to the hole, you're going to sneak up and you're going to push him in so he falls down.

And once he's in the hole, do we just leave him in the hole? Do we cover him up in the hole? What we going to do now that our fire giant is in the hole? We've used the shovel, we've used the ladder, he's eaten his favourite food, the chilli peppers.

Because he heard the lovely song.

That's right, we're going to pour that ice-cold water on him.

And this will make all the fire go out.

Now it's time for you to create your own map of our instructions about how to defeat the fire giants.

Remember, although my map is up on the screen, you don't need to use the same pictures as me.

You can think of your very own pictures.

We're now going to use our maps to answer some questions.

So our first question is at the slide, and I've got my map to help me answer this question.

Our first question says what equipment do you need? Can you pause the video and look at your map to find out what equipment do you need? Let's have a look at all the equipment that we needed.

There it is, on our map.

We needed a strong shovel, a tall ladder, a bag of red-hot chilli peppers, a beautiful singing voice, and the bucket.

What's in the bucket? It's ice-cold water.

Well done, super spellers.

Let's look at our next question.

Oh, why do we need to sing the fire giant's favourite song? Hmm, why do we need to sing that? Look at your map and see if you can find where we do our singing and then think, why do we need to do it? So pause the video and see if you can answer this question.

I wonder if you were able to figure out why do we need to sing the fire giants favourite song.

There's us doing our singing.

And afterwards the giant comes out and he eats the red-hot chilli peppers.

So we needed to do our singing to get him to come out because he's going to go, "What beautiful singing is that? It's my favourite fire song.

I'm going to pop my head outside and see who is singing.

What's this on the floor? There are some chilli peppers." So that's why we're going to sing their favourite song.

Another why question? Why do we lay chilli peppers outside the giant's house, why chilli peppers? Pause the video and see if you can figure this out with your map.

Right, super storytellers.

We can see in our map that the giant really wants to eat the chilli peppers.

So they are definitely his favourite food.

So that's a good food.

But why do we want him to be eating anything in the first place? Well because after he's eaten all the chilli peppers, it's going to lead him to the hole.

So we lie the chilli peppers there, outside his house, so that he will eat them, and eat them, and eat them until he's got to the hole, and then we can push him in.

When should you pour the ice water over them? When should you pour the ice water over them? Look at your map and see, when should we pour over the ice water? So you'll pause the video to answer this question.

Right, storytelling superstars.

That is the very last thing that we do, is pour the ice water over the fire giant.

So we should do it when they are in the hole.

If you try to do it before, the fire giant might attack you.

So you want to do it when he's safely in the hole, he can't get out yet.

And before he gets chance to haul himself out, you've already poured that ice water over.

We have had such a brilliant start to this unit.
