Hello there, I'm Mrs. Howley.

And this is my helper, Cedric.

And Cedric has been asking me lots of how and why questions today.

He's been keeping me busy.

It's a good job we're learning to be excellent explainers just like Dr.

Explanation.

In this lesson, lesson two of this unit, we're going to map and speak an explanation.

We're going to start with a nursery rhyme, then we're going to recap the explanation.

Then we're going to map the text, then we're going to have our first go at speaking the text.

For this lesson, you will need a pencil and a piece of paper.

You'll need your brilliant brain.

And you might want to bring a Teddy talk partner to help you out.

If you need to collect any of those things, press pause now.

And then press play when you're ready.

Let's get started with our nursery rhyme.

You might have sung this with me in lesson one.

But if you haven't, don't worry.

It's one of my favourites.

It's one potato, two potato.

Get your potatoes ready.

But I thought you might like to join in with the actions in the verse, today.

They go like this.

♪ In my little garden, now promise not to laugh ♪ ♪ I haven't any flowers and I haven't any grass ♪ ♪ But now I'll dig and plant ♪ ♪ And soon I'll have a show ♪ ♪ With a bit of sun and a bit of rain ♪ ♪ I'll have a lovely row ♪ ♪ Of one potato, two potato ♪ ♪ Three potato, four ♪ ♪ Five potato, six potato, seven potato, more ♪ ♪ One potato, two potato ♪ ♪ Three potato, four ♪ ♪ Five potato, six potato, seven potato, more ♪ Well, done.

Try and join in with some of the words now as well.

♪ In my little garden, now promise not to laugh ♪ ♪ I haven't any flowers and I haven't any grass ♪ ♪ But now I'll do some digging ♪ ♪ And soon I'll have a show ♪ ♪ With a bit of sun and a bit of rain ♪ ♪ I'll have a lovely row ♪ ♪ Of one potato, two potato ♪ ♪ Three potato, four ♪ ♪ Five potato, six potato, seven potato, more ♪ ♪ One potato, two potato ♪ ♪ Three potato, four ♪ ♪ Five potato, six potato, seven potato, more ♪ Phew, what a lot of potatoes.

And there's a special potato in our explanation.

A talking potato, and a talking dog.

And a talking loaf of bread.

I want to know more.

We're going to recap our explanation now.

Try and remember what we can about the explanation.

What was the explanation of? That's right, Cedric.

Why the King was amazed.

I wonder what you could remember.

I know that there was a special word we needed to use.

That word was, because.

That's right, I know who can help us with that word.

We need Dr.

Explanation back.

Dr.

Explanation, that's right.

Now, I've come back to see you because you all seem very lovely.

Now, I'm going to remind you of the explanation of why the King was amazed in the talking sweet potato story.

Let's start at the beginning.

You might want to join in, especially with our special word, because.

The farmer was scared because a dog spoke.

So he ran away.

The farmer was scared because a chicken spoke.

So he ran away again.

The farmer was scared because a loaf of bread spoke.

So he ran away again.

The King stopped him because he was running so fast.

The King stopped him to ask him where he was going because he wanted to know.

The King was surprised because dogs, and loaves of bread, and chickens don't talk.

The King was amazed because his throne spoke.

There you have it, what an explanation.

Started with a dog talking and before you know it, the throne is talking and the King is amazed.

I hope that helped because I like you.

I wonder how many sentences you can use with 'because' today.

Thank you, Dr.

Explanation.

That helped me remember.

That's right, Cedric.

He really does like to use the word 'because' a lot.

We've got a song for the word, because, and explaining.

Can you remember it? It goes like this.

♪ How, how, how did it happen ♪ ♪ Why, why, why did it happen ♪ ♪ If you explain, you need to use ♪ ♪ Because, because, because ♪ Now we're going to have a go at mapping the text.

Why do we map the text, Cedric? That's right, the pictures we draw help us remember the text, so then we can be the explainers, that's right.

Now, the pictures don't have to be perfect.

And I'm going to use to show the word, because.

Because it's so important.

What would I use, Cedric? An arrow, I like that idea.

I'm going to use a big arrow for the word, because.

So, first I'm going to draw the farmer being scared.

I'm going to give him a sad face to show him being scared.

The farmer was scared because, there's my big, explaining arrow.

Because a dog spoke to him.

There ya go, there's his nose.

Giving him some big ears.

And I'm going to draw a speech bubble because he talks, making the farmer very scared.

Next, I'm going to draw the next part of the explanation, which again the farmer is scared.

This time the farmer is scared because, do you remember which animal spoke next? It was a chicken.

There's his beak.

Tail, some legs.

I'm going to give him a speech bubble.

Now the next part of the explanation is the King.

And the King stops him, stops the farmer.

Here is his crown.

And he's looking very surprised.

The King stops him because, that's right, because he is running so fast.

There's the farmer running really fast.

Draw some speed lines there.

And then, of course, the King is surprised.

He's surprised, let's see.

He's surprised because the farmer has told him what's happened.

So he's surprised because chickens, and dogs, and loaves of bread don't talk.

So, here's my chicken talking.

And I'm going to draw loaf of bread talking.

And the dog talking.

With his big ears, yeah? And then finally, I'm going to draw the King looking amazed.

So, I'm going to give him big, wide eyes.

And a big, wide mouth.

There's his crown.

He is so amazed.

The King was amazed because the throne spoke.

I'm going to draw a throne now.

Now remember, it doesn't matter if your pictures aren't perfect.

The King was amazed because the throne spoke.

Now, it's your turn.

Have a go at creating your own text map with some pictures and some arrows to show why the King was amazed.

Pause the video, then press play when you're ready.

Now let's have a go at talking our text map.

Cedric's going to help me by asking me some questions.

And I'm going to try and use the word, the special explaining word, because, that's right.

Right, Cedric, off you go.

Why was the King scared the first time? Because the dog spoke.

Why was the King scared the second time? Because the chicken spoke.

Why did the King stop him? Because he ran so fast.

Why was the King surprised? That's right, Cedric.

Because chickens, and loaves of bread, and dogs don't talk.

Why was the King amazed, Cedric? He was amazed because the throne talked.

Pause the video now and have a go at talking your map using the word, because.

Press play when you're ready.

Wow, what a lot of explaining we've done in this lesson using that special word, because.

Fantastic, I think you deserve one of my special cheers.

It's called the superstar cheer.

It goes like this, are you ready? Superstars! Fantastic work.

In the next lesson of this unit, we're going to step that explanation so we can keep practising at being brilliant explainers.

I wonder what you can explain to somebody today.

Have a fantastic day, and me and Cedric will see you for the next lesson of this unit, bye.
