Hi team and welcome to today's lesson with me, Mrs. Garrard.

Now in today's lesson, we're going to be thinking about the nativity.

So the first thing we're going to need today is to bring together some resources.

Then we're going to think about who the important people were that were at the nativity and then we're going to make our very own nativity scene.

For this lesson you will need toilet roll tubes, you'll need quite a few so you'll need to save some up.

If you haven't got toilet roll tubes, you could use kitchen roll tubes and cut them into smaller pieces.

You'll need some paper and some scissors, some paint, some pens, some glue, and some felt.

Felt is a type of material.

If you don't have felt you could use any other type of material that you have at home.

You'll also need a cardboard box, some elastic bands and some straw.

If you have straw, that's great.

If you don't no big deal, you could just use some material or you could paint the bottom of the box when we get to that part.

Let's see what we'll need to do first.

So pause your video now and gather all of the resources that you'll need to make your nativity scene at the end of our lesson.

Come back and press play when you're ready.

Great, now you're back we're ready to think about who the important people were that were at the nativity.

The nativity scene recreates the night of Jesus's birth and showed who visited the new baby.

Have a look at the picture.

Can you name some of the people that came to visit the new baby Jesus? If you can tell the screen now.

Wow, you've got so many ideas about who came to visit the baby Jesus.

Let's see if they're the same as of some of the things I noticed.

At the nativity scene, we had Mary and Joseph and baby Jesus and the shepherds left their hillside and they came to visit the baby Jesus too.

Some wisemen, sometimes in the Bible they're called the wise men or magi.

They came to visit the baby Jesus.

There were three wise men or magi and of course there was the angel Gabriel, too.

Those are all the really important people that came to visit Jesus or were at the nativity scene.

Now it's time for us to make our very own nativity.

Now we know who needs to be present we can make our own nativity.

You'll need to watch the video and listen carefully to my instructions.

So the first thing I did was I got my toilet role tubes and I painted them in different colours to represent the different people.

This one is brown.

I think I'm going to make it into a shepherd.

But I'll need a blue one and a purple one for one of the magi.

The blue one could be Mary and Joseph.

So I'll need to paint all of my tubes into different colours to represent the different people that were at the nativity scene.

I wonder what colour I will paint the tube for the angel Gabriel? Hm, maybe white.

Can you see how I'm making sure all the paint covers all of the tube.

Then I'll need to put my tubes to one side so that they dry.

I think that's nearly all of the tube.

I'll need to be patient now and wait for them to dry.

Once they're dry, you can move on to the next part of our creating.

There we go put them to one side.

Now this is going to be one of the magi or the wise men.

Can you see I've got some glittery paper and I've cut it into a strip.

I'm going to make it into a crown.

So I'm going to cut some triangle shapes out of the top so that it looks like a pointy crown.

I've got my big scissors.

You'll need to be super careful with your scissors and make sure that your fingers are away from the cutting blades.

Can you see how I'm making tiny triangle snips at the top? It's a bit tricky to see.

As I get further down, you'll be able to see better.

I'm making triangle snips to make the crown.

Can you see? I'll do that all the way along my gold sparkly piece of paper.

Once I've got to the other end and I've made the shape of my crown, I'm going to stick it in place at the top of my toilet tube, measure to see how big it needs to be.

I've cut a circle of paper to make the face of my magi or my wise man added some eyes I'm going to stick it in place.

Can you see how I've cut a piece of paper? This is black paper and I've made a beard shape so that I can add a beard to my magi.

Can you see? Sticking it to the circle of paper that represents his face.

Now I'm going to stick it on my tube.

At the top.

Put some glue on the crown.

Add the crown to the top of the tube.

You have to hold it in place for a little while till the glue starts to dry a little bit.

Now I've got two little pieces of paper that is kind of an oval shape.

I'm sticking those on to make the hands of the magi 'cause he's going to be holding a present.

Now this is going to be either Mary or Joseph.

Can you see I've painted the tube blue? I've got my circle of paper and I've added some eyes oh and it's a beard, and we're putting a beard on so this must be Joseph.

I've made a piece of paper.

I've cut it into a shape of a beard and I'm sticking that on in place.

Then just like with the magi, I'm going to stick the paper face onto the tube at the top.

And then I have a piece of felt material.

Remember if you don't have felt no big deal, you can just use whatever material that you have in the house.

I'm going to add a mouth and then I'm going to add the felt to the top with an elastic band.

It's a little bit tricky.

You might need some help to do this.

You have to hold it in place and then put the elastic band around the top to hold it in place to secure it.

Do you see how I'm doing that? And that makes our Joseph.

And that's how I created all of the characters in the nativity.

I just thought about the different things that they would need.

This is going to be Mary so I'm going to draw her face on a circle piece of paper I've cut out carefully.

And then I have a white piece of felt material that I'm going to add with an elastic band onto the top of my tube.

Can you see I'm holding the material with one hand and then using the other hand to put my elastic band in place.

And then Mary is going to be holding baby Jesus.

So I've cut a little piece of paper into the shape of baby Jesus and drawn his face on there.

I'm going to stick it on as if Mary is holding him.

There's Mary and Joseph and we've done one of the magi.

Let's move to the next slide and we can see how I made the stable.

Can you see the stable is just a box and I opened up all of the flaps and made a pointy roof by cutting the top flap into a triangle and then I just cut out a star and added a star.

Can you see that I've made all of the people that attended the nativity scene in the same way out of tubes and I've just altered things that I've added to them.

So can you see? Look carefully.

I've used a pipe cleaner to make a crook for the shepherds and the magi or the wise men have cloaks and crowns and they're carrying a gift.

And right at the top of the barn or the stable you can see the angel Gabriel, I've painted her tube white and I've added a halo and some wings, but I noticed something that is missing from my nativity scene.

I don't see any animals in the staple.

I wonder what animals might have been in the stable on the night that Jesus was born.

Have a think, I wonder what animals you think? Maybe there was a cow or sheep or donkey and maybe they were camels.

The magi may have travelled on camels.

So maybe some camels came to visit the baby Jesus too.

So if you want to, you could add the animals to your nativity scene, too.

Team that's the end of our lesson today.

If you'd like to share your work with Oak National, you can do that by asking your parent or carer to share your work on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, tagging @OakNational and #LearnwithOak and then I'll get to see all your fabulous nativity creations.

It's time for me to say goodbye now.

See you again soon in another lesson, bye team.
