Hi team, and welcome to today's lesson with me, Mrs. Garrard.

Now, in today's lesson, we're going to be thinking about ocean pollution, and we're going to think about how we can persuade people to stop polluting the oceans.

Let's share my screen and we'll see what we'll do first.

So the first thing we're going to need to do is gather some resources for the creating part of the lesson right at the end.

Then we're going to look at what ocean pollution is.

We'll look at the effects of ocean pollution, and we'll think of ways that we can help.

And finally, we'll get to do our creating part at the end of the lesson.

So for this lesson, you will need a clear plastic bottle, a plastic bag and some scissors, an elastic band and some blue food colouring.

Pause the video now and gather the resources that you'll need for the end of the lesson.

Come back and press play once you're ready.

Great, now that you're back, it's time to think about what ocean pollution is.

Have a look at the pictures on your screen and see if you can tell me some of the things that you see.

Great job, team.

I can see a picture of a beach, and lots of things have washed up onto the beach from the ocean.

I see a plastic bottle.

I see a bag.

I can see some bottle tops.

And in the next picture, I can see things floating on the top of the ocean, little pieces of plastic like bottle tops and bits of straws.

This is all waste that has got into the ocean from things that we use, and that's not okay.

Some of the items that are commonly found in the ocean, polluting the ocean, are plastic bottles, plastic bags, bottle tops and lids, and plastic straws.

Most of these things are made from plastic.

Plastic is very hard to degrade, so it lasts a long time and it can cause lots of damage in our oceans.

Let's see what the effects of the pollution in our oceans has on the wildlife that lives there.

So can you see there's a picture of a turtle and the turtle has eaten a plastic bag? The plastic bag was floating in the water, and it looked like a jellyfish, and turtles love to eat jellyfish.

The turtle thought the plastic bag was a jellyfish and he ate it, and that can cause him trouble in his tummy.

It can make him feel very poorly, and that's not a great thing to happen.

And can you see the pictures of the pelicans? Pelicans are a type of seabird that like to feed on the surface of the water.

And quite often, they will pick up things that are floating on the top of the water, like bits of plastic bottle top and bits of straw.

And they'll eat them, and that will cause them trouble too in their tummies.

And they'll also try and feed them to their chicks, and that's really damaging for the chicks as well.

I can see that the polar bear has got a traffic cone trapped on his head.

That's not okay.

It's making it very difficult for him to swim.

And it will also make it very difficult for him to hunt and catch his prey that he needs to eat.

I can also see in the next picture there's a picture of a bird and it looks like there is lots of fishing wire and fishing net.

This is really dangerous for seabirds.

They sometimes use it in their nests.

They think it's something like twigs and things that they could use to build with, but it's not very safe.

It's very easy for them to get tangled up in it.

They could get it tangled round their legs and their beaks.

If they get it tangled round their legs, it can stop them moving around.

And if they get it tangled in their beaks, it can stop them being able to eat.

Sometimes they even swallow it, and that's a really big problem.

Let's think about ways that we can help stop pollution getting into our oceans.

So the first thing we could do is quite often single-use water containers or drinks containers.

They end up in our oceans, so we could help that problem by not using them.

We could always use reusable containers, just like the red one.

Can you see? That one you can refill and use it lots and lots of times.

That's a really great way of stopping plastic bottles getting into our oceans.

Another great thing you can do is not use single-use plastic bags to carry your shopping.

You could use a reusable bag to carry your shopping.

You just have to remember to take it to the shops with you.

Another way that we can stop plastic getting into our oceans is to not use plastic straws.

People don't really make plastic straws very much anymore, but we could always choose to use paper straws.

And finally, we can all do our bit to stop plastic and other items getting into our oceans and polluting them by recycling.

I wonder if you recycle at home.

I recycle at home.

Now it's time for us to do our creating part.

Now, we've spoken about the way that turtles sometimes mistake plastic bags as jellyfish.

They look like jellyfish and they eat them.

The thing we're going to make now is a jellyfish in a bottle made from a plastic bag, and that will show you just how much they look like jellyfish and how they can confuse the turtles.

Let's find the video.

Watch carefully and listen to my instructions, and you can make your very own jellyfish in a bottle.

So can you see I've got a plastic bag that's a food bag? And I'm going to cut the sticky bit off at the end.

And then I'm going to use my scissors to cut pieces all the way, not quite to the end, but quite a way up the plastic bag.

I'm using really big scissors.

That's because I've been using scissors for a long time and I'm really good at using them now, but you should always have an adult to supervise you if you're using scissors.

And you should use ones that are appropriate for you, so smaller ones that are a little bit safer.

Can you see how I'm making snips in the plastic bag about 2/3 of the way up? So not quite to the top.

These are going to make the tentacles of the jellyfish.

Keep cutting.

I haven't got all the way to the end yet.

I have to get all the way to the end, making lots of little cuts to make lots of tentacles on our jellyfish.

I'm being very careful to make sure my fingers are not near the blades of the scissors.

Once I've finished cutting the tentacles, I'm going to make the body of the jellyfish.

And to do that, I'm going to need to put some water in my plastic bag.

It's a little bit tricky, and because we're using water, you're going to need some supervision from an adult to make sure that you're safe.

So I'm going to hold the bag.

It's a bit tricky to see, but I'm going to hold the bag and make it into like a balloon shape at the end.

Can you see how I'm shaping it? Making sure all the tentacles are one side of my hand, and then the other bit of plastic is the other side.

I'm going to use an elastic band to tie it.

You might need some help with this bit because it's a little bit fiddly.

I'm not going to tie it too tightly because I'm going to need to make a hole and put the water in the hole to make the body of the jellyfish.

Can you see how I'm making the hole? So you have to move all the little tentacles away and make a hole and put some water in.

Can you see the water goes in that little hole there? Can you see? It looks a little bit like a balloon full of water.

That's our jellyfish.

And now it's time to fill our bottle with water.

I'm going to put a little bit of blue food colouring, a couple of drops, and then fill my bottle with water.

I'm using a jug to pour water into my bottle.

And then I'm going to put my jellyfish inside.

Squishing him in.

I'm making sure the tentacles go first so that his body is at the top of the bottle.

Using my fingers to poke it in.

Let me show you a picture.

It's a bit easier to see in the picture.

Do you see? Can you look closely and see how much the plastic bag that we filled with water now looks like a jellyfish? Do you see how a turtle could be confused and think that that was food? Yeah, I can too.

That's really sad that the turtle can mistake the plastic bag as a jellyfish, 'cause it can make him poorly.

Team, we've thought about some different ways that we can stop pollution getting into our oceans.

Can you think of one way that you can change the way you behave to stop pollution getting into our oceans? I'm going to always remember to take my own bags shopping, not plastic bags, reusable bags, so that that's one way I can stop pollution getting into the ocean.

Tell the screen one way that you will stop pollution getting into the ocean.

Great job, team.

You've done a really great job of listening and thinking about how pollution affects our oceans and what we can do to stop that.

I hope you enjoy making your jellyfish in a bottle.

And if you'd like to share that with me, you could do that by sharing your work on Oak National.

If you'd like to do that, you'll need to ask a parent or carer to share your work on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, tagging @OakNational and #LearnwithOak.

Team, that's the end of our lesson for today.

I hope you enjoy making your jellyfish, and I look forward to seeing some of them on social media.

Bye, team.
