Hello, mathematicians! It's me, Mrs. Charleton, and my talk partner Hedwig back for some more learning.

Before we get started, I want to share something exciting you.

I've been trying really hard to grow some fruit.

And I have managed to grow, three blueberries! I know there are only three, but I'm very proud of myself nonetheless.

I think they might be a bit sour, so I might need to put some sugar on them.

But I'm still proud of it.

Have you done anything that you've been proud of lately? I bet you have! Maybe you can tell your talk partner what you've been proud of.

Now, let's get started with today's lesson.

We are going to be recognising and creating repeating patterns.

We'll explore and create some shape and colour patterns, and then we're going to describe them and see if we can continue the patterns.

A little bit like problem-solving, like detectives.

Then you are going to do an independent task.

Now, there are no answers today, and no quiz.

Because all of you will be creating slightly different patterns, so it is difficult for us to check together.

You'll need a pencil, some paper, and if you're creating your own shapes you might need to use some scissors, and a ruler, and some crayons to colour them in.

Let's start off with a brain teaser to get ourselves warmed up.

Now, I've got a bead string and some cubes and a number line, and I can see that the bead string is showing two, two, two, two, two, and the cubes are showing two, two, two, two, two.

So, we're going to practise skip counting in two's.

Increasing by two's, so I've got two and another two makes four.

What would the next number be? Hmmmm? Two, three, four, six, eight, ten! Let's check that together on the number line.

Are you ready? Two, four, six, eight, ten! Two, four, six, eight, ten! Can you say that? Two, four, six, eight, ten.

That's skip counting in two's! Really well done! Let's go through our star words.

Get your hands ready.

Hands up, star words! Pat-tern, re-pea-ting be-fore, af-ter Those are the star words that are going to come up in today's lesson that are going to help you workout the patterns.

In front of us, we have got a pattern.

There are some cubes, and I can see that each of the cubes are square.

But, what's different about them? Hmmm? Well, that one's a red cube, and then a yellow cube, and then a red cube, and then a yellow cube.

Red, yellow, red, yellow.

So, what comes next? Red, yellow, red, yellow, Can you shout it at me? Red, yellow, red, yellow Red! Well, done! That was a pattern.

It was a colour pattern, because the colour has changed each time.

Red, yellow, red, yellow, red and the next one would be yellow.

What about this one? I've still got cubes again, so they're all cubes.

But the colours are changing.

Should we same the names of the colours together? Ready? Put your finger on the first one.

Blue, green, yellow, blue, green, hmmm? What would come next? Let's do it again.

Blue, green, yellow, blue, green, yellow! Well done, everybody! We found another colour pattern.

Blue, green, yellow, blue, green, yellow.

It's a pattern because we can figure out which one comes next.

What about this one? This is a little trickier.

Hmmm? Let's look carefully.

Let's go through the colours, just like we did before.

Can you point to the first blue triangle? Blue, purple, purple, orange, hmmm? Does that help us figure out what colour might come next? Blue, purple, purple, orange.

There's no pattern there with the colours is there? So, if there isn't a pattern with the colours, there might be a pattern with something else.

Let's look at the shapes.

Triangle, circle, triangle, circle Now, our options for the next ones are either a triangle or a circle.

Ahhhh! This pattern is a shape pattern.

Triangle, circle, triangle, circle What will come next? Triangle! This one will come next because it's a shape pattern.

Triangle, circle, triangle, circle, triangle So, sometimes the patterns are colour patterns, sometimes the patterns are shape patterns, sometimes they can be both! Let's try this one.

Is this a shape pattern, a colour pattern, or both? Let's check the colours again, like we did before.

Put your finger on the first one, let's do the colours together.

Yellow, red, blue, yellow, red, blue.

Oh! Yellow, red, blue, yellow, red, blue.

It sometimes helps if you speed it up a bit, it helps you figure out what the next one might be.

Yellow, red, blue, yellow, red, blue So, the next colour would be? Can you shout it? Yellow! Well, done! The next one would be a yellow.

But what shape would it be? Let's check the shapes now.

Circle, square, triangle, circle, square, triangle.

Hmmm.

Let's say it again to be sure.

Circle, square, triangle, circle, square, triangle.

So, the next shape would be a? Circle! So, we know the colour needs to be yellow, and the shape needs to be a circle! Let's say that pattern together.

Yellow circle, red square, blue triangle, yellow circle, red square, blue triangle, yellow circle.

We have created another pattern.

And this pattern is a colour pattern and a shape pattern.

I think it was trying to trick us, but we weren't tricked, were we? I think we should have a celebration for that, shall we have a pat on the back? Ready? Pat on the back, pat on the back, fancy that! What about this one? Remember, we need to check the colours, and then we'll check the shapes.

Let's look at the colours together.

Yellow, orange, pink, red, pink, red.

Hmmm? Is that a colour pattern? Can you spot a pattern in those colours? I can't.

So, now let's check the shapes.

Circle, square, circle, square, circle, square.

So, the next one must be a circle! But can we be sure, what colour that circle needs to be? Not really, because we don't know the colour pattern.

We just know that it's a shape pattern.

Your turn.

Are you ready? I want you to look carefully at this and see if you can figure it out.

I'm going to try it as well, and say it in my head as I go.

Ready? Let's try.

Hmmm.

Colours first.

Did you do the colours? Let's check them together.

Blue, orange, blue, orange, blue, orange Blue! The next one will be blue.

Now, I know I need to check the shapes.

Hmmm.

Hmmm.

Did you spot the shape? Was there a pattern? Let's try.

Triangle, square, rectangle, triangle, rectangle, circle.

Was there a shape pattern there? No.

So, we have a colour pattern, but not a shape pattern.

So, we know the next must be blue, but we don't know exactly what shape it will be.

Now, it's your turn to try this as your independent task.

You've got all of these different shapes here, and they're in different colours, and you can use them by cutting them out and putting them in patterns.

See if you can make a pattern with them.

Be very, very careful if you're using scissors.

Maybe see if there is someone around to help you.

If you don't want to use the shapes that are there, that's fine.

You can draw your own shapes, and then you can colour them in and create your own patterns! I think you'll have a really good time doing that.

Now, before you go we need to wake up that sleepy, sleepy owl because she missed all of our learning again.

Oh, Hedwig! Wakey! Wakey! Say, wakey, wakey, Hedwig! What did we do today? Well, we moved on to patterns today, didn't we? And we had a look at different patterns, and we had to identify what type of pattern they were.

So, we checked first to see if there was a colour pattern, and then we checked to see if there was a shape pattern.

And then, we used all of that to create our own patterns.

It was really good fun! Well, I had fun anyway.
