Hello everyone, my name is Miss Barron.

Now you already know that I love stories.

I love telling stories, I love writing stories, and I love making up stories.

So it makes sense that I also love reading stories.

And today we are going to do some reading together.

We are going to practise one of our key reading skills today, and that is to retrieve information.

So let's just practise saying that word together in case it's a new word.

So my turn first, retrieve, your turn.

Brilliant, again, retrieve, your turn.

Fantastic.

Now, to retrieve means to find and bring back.

So for example, I might retrieve a pencil case for my friend, I might retrieve my bag that my mum borrowed.

So to retrieve means to find and bring back.

And today we are going to practise retrieving information from the texts that we read.

And we're going to do that because when we retrieve information, when we find information in the text that's important, it really helps us to understand what we're reading.

So in today's lesson, we are first going to do a spelling activity.

Then we are going to do our strategy check to help us be amazing readers today.

After that, we are going to read together, and we're going to practise retrieving information.

So we're going to do some of that practise together, and you're going to have a go at doing some practise on your own.

So in today's lesson, you will need an exercise book or a piece of paper to write on, a pencil to write with, and if you can download and print the reading extract now that comes with this lesson.

If not, don't worry about it, you can just read along on the screen with me.

So pause the video now and go and get those things if you need to.

Fantastic job, you're back and ready to begin the learning today.

So first of all, let's do our strategy check.

Let's have a think about some of the strategies we can do to help us read the words on the page.

So, if a word is difficult to read, we can look at the letters, make the sounds, and blend them together, can't we? Go on do that with me.

We can look at the letters, make the sounds, and blend them together.

Fantastic.

Now, if it's a tricky word, or some of you might call them sight words, we can't sound them out, can we? We just have to learn them, we just have to remember them.

So in that case, we are going to see the words and say the words.

What are we going to do? We're going to see the words and say the word, aren't we? Fantastic.

Now, if we don't understand a sentence that we've read, we're going to go back and reread it.

We're going to go back and reread it.

So those are our strategies to help us read the words today.

Now let's have a look at some of the keywords that we are going to come across when we read, these words might be new words.

So the first word, my turn, your turn.

Jagged, your turn.

Deep voice, jagged, your turn.

Brilliant.

Now, there is a picture of some jagged rocks on a mountain.

Often mountains can be jagged.

Jagged means that they have sharp points.

So you can see that mountain is really jagged, isn't it? Now, then the next word is hawk.

My turn hawk, your turn.

Brilliant, again, hawk, your turn.

Fantastic.

Now, there is a picture of a hawk.

A hawk is a bird of prey, and hawks have fantastic eyesight.

So sometimes we say that we watch things like hawks, which means that we watch over them really closely.

Now, another two words that we are going to come across in our reading, guardians.

My turn, guardians, your turn.

Fantastic.

Now, you know that word already from our story.

For example, the fire giant is a guardian of the sun.

So guardians watch over things, they guide things.

And finally, stealthily.

So listen again, stealthily, your turn.

Brilliant job, one more time, stealthily, your turn.

Fantastic.

Now, if we do something stealthily, it means we do it without wanting people to know that we're doing it.

So we do it secretly, we do it quietly.

So for example, I might say, Coyote crept stealthily back into the sky world.

which means he did it without wanting anyone to know that he was there.

So these are some words that we are going to meet in today's reading.

Now, here is a tricky word that we are going to meet, or a sight word, through.

So let's say it a few times together.

Through, my turn, through, your turn, brilliant.

Let's do a squeaky voice your turn.

Let's do a whisper your turn.

Fantastic, the word is through.

So we can't sound that word out.

If we see it in the text, which we will, let's see if we can remember it.

And we're just going to see it and say it, aren't we? Fantastic.

Now then, we know that our key reading skill that we are practising today is retrieval.

Can you remind me what were retrieval meant again? What does it mean? Retrieval means, go on, tell me to the screen, have a go.

Excellent job, you listened really well at the beginning.

Retrieve means to find and bring back.

So when we practise our retrieval skills today, we are going to be looking carefully for key information in the text, and we are going to be looking to spot it, find it, and then use it to help us understand what we're reading.

So these are some strategies that can really help us to do that today.

Well, not just today, any day when you're retrieving.

But let's have a look at them.

So, number one, we're going to read the question really carefully, and look out for some key words.

So we're going to look for key words in the question, which we can then try and spot in the text that we're reading.

So, number two, we're going to scan the text.

Now to scan means to look over something with our eyes.

So we move quickly over the text with our eyes, scanning for those key words that we spotted in the question.

And once we find them, we're going to then read around them, and see if we can find the answer to pull out.

And there's number three, find the information.

So those are our key strategies that we are going to be practising today.

We are going to look for key words in the question.

When we spot the key words, the important words, we are going to scan with our eyes to find them quickly in the text.

Once we found them, we're going to read around them to find the answer and then pull it out so that we can use it to answer our questions.

So let's begin reading our story.

Read with me.

Coyote trotted out of the forest, up through.

Oh, look, there's our tricky word.

Up through the meadows and the steep, jagged mountains, through the door into the sky world.

Did you spot our key word, jagged? So let's read that sentence again.

Coyote trotted out of the forest, up through the meadows and the steep, jagged mountains through the door into the sky world.

Slowly and carefully, he crept towards the blazing sun.

As he got closer, he saw that the sun was a.

Oh, I don't know this word, what can I do? I can look at the letters, make the sounds, and blend them together.

So do that with me, ready? Scorching, brilliant.

As he got closer, he saw that the sun was a scorching ball of fire, watched closely by the fire guardians.

Now scorching means extremely hot.

Never blinking, they watched the sun like hawks, ready to catch any thief who might try and steal it.

Now then, let's have a look at our first question.

Which words describe the mountains? So what are our key words in that question? What are the important words? Well, the first is words.

Words tells us that we are looking for more than one word.

So we know we need more than one word in our answer.

Now the next key word is describe.

So we know that we are looking for a describing word.

We're going to be looking for adjectives.

And finally, the last key word is mountains.

So we know that we are looking for adjectives now to describe the mountains.

So I would like you to go back to the text that we just read.

So you're not going to guess the answer to this, you're not going to try and remember it, you are going to go back to the text and you are going to put your finger under the words which describe the mountains.

So go back and find the words in the text.

Pause the video now and do that.

Fantastic job, well done for going back to the text to find those words.

So tell me to your screen now, the words are.

Go on tell me what you think.

Shall we see if you're right? Which words described the mountains? There they are in bold.

It's in that first sentence, isn't it? The words are steep and jagged.

Those are the two adjectives which describe the mountains.

Now, how did we know where to look? We knew because of that key word mountains in the question.

So when we went back to the text, we could scan really quickly with our eyes to find the word mountains and then read around it.

And there we find our two adjectives, don't we? Before the noun mountains to describe the mountains.

So let's read that sentence.

Coyote trotted out of the forest, up through the meadows and the steep, jagged mountains, through the door into the sky world.

So those are two words to describe the mountains.

Fantastic job.

So let's have a look at our next question.

Here you have a statement and I want you to decide whether you think it's true or false.

So let's read the statement.

The fire guardian sometimes got distracted.

Now, to get distracted means to not focus on what you're doing.

So you might start looking elsewhere, or you might start doing something else.

So to not concentrate.

What do you think, the fire guardians sometimes got distracted, is that true or false? Now I would like you to think about that using this sentence stem to frame your idea.

This is true, or this is false because in the text it says.

So again, I want you to go back to that piece of text and find some evidence to support your answer.

So let's have a look at this statement.

What key words are we going to scan for to help us find the answer? We're going to scan for the words, fire guardians, aren't we? Those are the key words in that statement.

So when you go back to the text, look carefully, scan with your eyes to find the words, fire guardians, and read around those words, and see if you can find the evidence to support your answer.

And when you do, put your finger under it, you've got it.

So pause the video now and do that.

So well done for going back to the text to work out that that statement was false.

And here's why, let's look at the evidence in the text to tell us why it's false.

So if we scanned for the words, fire guardians, we would have found those words at the end of the first sentence that you can see on your screen here.

And if we read around those words, then just before it, we see the phrase, watched closely.

Now, if we watch something closely, we know that we don't get distracted.

So it says, doesn't it? That the son was a scorching ball of fire, watched closely by the fire guardians.

That's the first piece of evidence that tells us it's false.

Then we've got another piece of evidence, never blinking.

If we never blink, then we don't get distracted, do we? We are watching something all the time.

Then we've got another piece of evidence, they watched the sun like hawks.

So if you watch something like a hawk, again, you never take your eyes off it.

And finally, ready to catch any thief.

So if you're ready, you're not distracted, are you? So, those are four pieces of evidence that tells us that that statement is false.

Brilliant job.

Now let's carry on reading.

Read with me.

Coyote saw the fire guardians take each other's places, one by one, as they each took it in turns to eat.

Coyote came up with a cunning plan.

What do you think cunning means? Can you work it out? What kind of plan is a cunning plan? Go on, tell me to your screen now, say, I think cunning means.

Brilliant, you've worked that out really well.

So cunning means clever, but clever in a kind of devious way, in secretive way.

So he's got a cunning plan to get the better of those fire guardians, hasn't he? As he turned to leave, a twig snaps beneath his feet.

"Who comes to steal my fire?" Bellowed the fire giant.

Go on read that with me again in a bellowing voice.

"Who comes to steal my fire?" Fantastic, bellowed, the fire giant.

Coyote bolted down the mountain back to the other animals.

Now he knew there was hope, but he couldn't do it alone.

He asked for help from three of his friends.

So let's have a look at this question.

How did the fire guardians realise someone was there? So again, your key words that you are going to look for are fire guardians.

So we're looking for a reaction that's going to help us.

If we find their reaction in the text and we read around it, we read before that reaction, then we're going to find how they knew, how they realised someone was there.

So pause the video now and look for that in the text.

Put your finger under the bit that tells you.

Pause the video and have a go at that.

Brilliant, so go on then tell me what you think.

Say, they realise because.

Okay, shall we see if you're right? Here's the answer.

A twig snapped beneath his feet.

That is how the fire guardians realised that someone was there.

Now then, it comes just before their reaction, doesn't it? So let's look at that sentence after beneath his feet.

"Who comes to steal my fire?" There's a question, that is the giant's reaction.

That's what the giant says once he realises someone is there.

So if we find that, and then we read just before it, there's our answer.

Why did he react like that? Because the twigs stopped beneath Coyote's feet.

And so he knew he was there.

Well done if you found that.

That was a bit trickier because there weren't any exact words from the question that we could find in the text to help us answer that.

So let's have a look at the next question, which word tells you how the fire guardian spoke, yelled, bellowed or shouted? Go back to the text and find the word that tells you, put your finger underneath it.

Pause the video now and do that.

Brilliant, well done.

So you've found it, you've got your finger under the word, go on tell me what it is then, say, the word is.

Well done, the word is bellowed, isn't it? And we practised bellowing together in our loud, booming voices, didn't we? So to bellow means to speak in a really loud, deep voice.

Let's carry on reading.

As soon as the fire guardian turned his back, Coyote nipped out from his hiding place and seized a piece of fire.

He put it in his mouth.

He crept stealthily back to the sky door.

There's our key word, stealthily.

Do you remember what it means? So to creep carefully, to creep secretly, without people knowing that you're there.

He crept stealthily back to the sky door, "Who has stolen my fire?" Roars the fire giant.

With huge, giant strides, he stormed after Coyote, following the smell at the burning fire.

Coyote's fur began to singe with the heat of the fire.

Now to singe means to burn.

Just then the fire giant reached out to grab Coyote by the tail, but luckily fearless White Crow was waiting.

Which verb tells us how Coyote took the fire? So let's have a look for the key words in that question.

Verb, we know we're looking for a verb, a doing word.

Now it's probably going to be in the past tense because our story is written in the past tense, so there's another clue.

And the verb is going to tell us how Coyote took the fire.

So other key words are Coyote and fire.

So those are words to scan for.

You're looking for a verb, one verb.

So go back to the text now and put your finger underneath that verb.

Pause the video now and have a look for it.

Okay, fantastic, you're back.

So go on and tell me what the verb is.

Say, the verb is.

Well done, the verb is seized, isn't it? That is the verb that tells us how Coyote took the fire.

So to seize means to snatch, to take quickly, to take forcefully.

He seized a piece of fire.

Let's read the whole sentence.

As soon as the fire guardian turned his back, Coyote nipped out from his hiding place and seized a piece of fire.

How did the fire giants know which way to follow Coyote? Let's have a look at the statement in the blue box.

They could hear the twigs snapping beneath his feet.

So what do you think, is that true or false? Is that how the giants knew which way to follow Coyote? Pause the video now, go back to the text, and find it to help you support your answer.

Okay, you're back, well done.

Well done for looking carefully in the text to find whether you think that statement is true or false.

So tell me to the screen now, say, I think it's true, or I think it's false because.

Okay, some different ideas there, shall we have a look? So, it's false, isn't it? Because there's the phrase that tells us, following the smell of the burning fire, that's how they knew which way to follow him.

Let's read it in the sentence.

With huge giant strides, he stormed after Coyote, following the smell of the burning fire.

So there's our key word.

Well follow with ing on the end.

So if we found that, then we would find the answer.

So don't get confused.

Remember the tweaks snapping onto Coyote's feet, that was how they knew he was there.

But how did they know which way to follow him is because of the smell of the burning fire.

Well done for spotting that in the text if you did.

Now then, we come to our final challenge task today.

When do you think Coyote was bravest in the story and why? And I would like you to go back and find evidence from the text to you support your answer.

And I'd like you to write this down.

So when was he bravest and why? And you can use your sentence stem to start your sentence.

I think Coyote was bravest when.

Go and find some evidence from the text to help you answer that question.

So pause the video now and have it go at that.

And that brings us to the end of today's learning.

Well done on your fantastic reading and your really hard work and effort practising your retrieval skills, by going back to the text to find the evidence to support your answer.

Brilliant job.

So in the meantime, keep reading stories, keep telling stories, keep writing stories, and I will see you for lesson six.

See you in lesson six.

Bye.
