Hello there.

I'm Mrs Howley and this is Cedric and we're really pleased to be here with you today for lesson six of this unit, all about explanation writing.

I can tell that Cedric is excited because of his face.

We're going to be thinking about how people show their feelings in our lesson today.

In this lesson, we're going to show how a character feels.

We're going to start with a nursery rhyme.

Then we're going to play a game.

And then we're going to write about the character's feelings in our explanation text.

For this lesson you will need, a pencil and a piece of paper, your brilliant brain and you might want to bring a teddy talk partner.

Cedric helps me when I'm learning.

If you need to collect any of those things, pause the video now then press play when you're ready.

Now it's time for our nursery rhyme.

In our explanation, the king is amazed by what he sees.

What amazes you when you see it Cedric? A rainbow? Me too.

And I know a song about a rainbow.

You might know it.

If you do join in, but don't worry if you don't just have a listen.

♪ Red and yellow want pink and green ♪ ♪ Purple and orange and blue ♪ ♪ I can sing a rainbow ♪ ♪ Sing a rainbow ♪ ♪ Sing a rainbow too ♪ Should we sing it again? Can you join in and show a beautiful rainbow this time? Off we go.

♪ Red and yellow want pink and green ♪ ♪ Purple and orange and blue ♪ ♪ I can sing a rainbow ♪ ♪ Sing a rainbow ♪ ♪ Sing a rainbow too ♪ All of those gorgeous colours.

I wonder which is your favourite colour? I think mine today is red.

I feel amazed when I see a rainbow.

We're going to play a game now.

All about showing feelings.

How do people show their feelings? What do you think Cedric? With their voice.

Yes.

With the things that they say and how they say it.

So people show feelings with their voice.

How else do people show their feelings? With their face.

That's right.

So they show feelings with their voice and their face.

How else do people show feelings Cedric? Oh, I know.

With their actions, the things that they do.

So we're going to have a go at showing feelings with our voice, our face and in action.

At the start of our explanation, how does the farmer feel? The farmer feels scared.

What do you think he might say with his voice to show how scared he feels? I think he might say, "What is that?" My turn, your turn, with your voice.

What is that? You seemed very scared then.

So we've tried to show scared with our voice.

Could we do a big scared face now? My turn, your turn.

Oh! Fantastic.

And then an action.

Ooh, what might somebody do if they're feeling really scared? What does the farmer do? He runs away.

Ready? My turn, your turn.

My turn, your turn.

Excellent.

So, we've shown with our voice and our face and in action, the feeling of being scared.

Now let's have another think about our explanation in this unit.

The king feels amazed when the throne talks.

what do you think he might say when that throne talks to show how amazed he is? A talking throne? My turn, your turn.

A talking throne? Your turn.

Brilliant.

Can you show an amazed face? My turn, your turn.

Your turn.

And now, let's think about an action for being amazed.

I'm going to put it with the word wow like this.

My turn, wow.

Your turn.

Wow.

Excellent, let's have a try with one more feeling.

How about in my new idea for why the king was amazed, the king's crown ran away and he felt so sad because it was his favourite crown.

So what might he say to show how sad he is when the crown has ran away? He might say, "I miss my crown." Your turn, I miss my crown.

That's her voice.

Now, can you show me a sad face? your turn.

Oh, too sad.

And then what might the action be? I think it might be crying.

Can you show me a crying action.

Don't worry Cedric, we're just acting.

We're not really sad.

We did a great job then of showing feelings with our voice, with our face and with an action.

You might want to pause the video now and have a go at acting out those feelings again with your teddy talk partner.

Press play when you're ready.

let's focus in on the king's feelings, when the throne talks.

How can we show in words his feeling of amazement through what he says and what he does? What do you think the king might say? And what do you think he might do? I've got some ideas.

Here are some high-frequency words we might need to use.

Can you practise them with me now? My turn, your turn.

It, it, the, the, he, he, away away, my, my.

And then here is a couple of tricky words, our star words that we might need to use.

How, talk, throne.

Don't forget that when we are writing, we're going to have a go at spelling some words ourselves using our phonics.

That's right Cedric.

We're going to say the word, robot the word, then write the word.

Let's have a go.

Let's start with our speech bubble.

What might the king say when the throne talks? "what is going on?" He could say, "My throne is talking?" "How can it talk?" That's why I'm going to go with, how can it talk? How can it talk? That's a question, so we're going to need a question mark at the end of it and a capital letter at the start.

How can, Can we robot that word can.

C-A-N, can.

How can it talk? So first I'll draw my speech bubble.

Nice and big.

And I'm thinking about my sentence.

How can it talk? He can't believe it.

Capital H, how, how, finger space can, C-A-N.

C-A-N.

How can, finger space, but I'll move to the next line.

How can it, finger space, talk.

That's one of our star words, a tricky word and we've got that displayed for you.

And the question mark.

How can it talk? Now, we'll think about what the king might do when he's really amazed.

He jumped up.

He ran away.

That's what I'm going to use.

The king ran away.

The king ran away.

Full stop.

Capital letter, The king, ooh, can we robot about that word? K-I-N-G, king.

The king ran, R-A-N, ran.

The king ran away.

Full stop.

So, capital letter for our tricky first high-frequency word, the.

The, finger space, the King, K-I-NG, K-I-NG.

The king, finger space, ran.

R-A-N The king ran, finger space, away.

Away.

One of our high frequency words, the king ran away.

Full stop.

Now its your go to have a go at writing about the king's feelings when he felt amazed.

You could choose a speech bubble to show what he says and a sentence to show what he does.

Don't forget, you've got some high-frequency words here and some star words.

That's right Cedric we've got how, talk and throne.

And don't forget to use your phonics.

And you can say the word, robot the word, then write the word.

Have a go, then press play when you're ready.

How did it go on? Cedric things I've forgotten all about the word because today.

I haven't forgotten about it.

It's so important when we're explaining why or how things happen.

Let's think.

Why was the king so amazed? Are you ready to use because? The king was amazed because his throne spoke.

Fantastic.

And we'll get to use because even more in our next lesson of this unit.

We can't wait to see you soon.

Bye-bye.
