Hello.

I'm Adam.

And this is Panda.

Panda's been really working hard.

She's been building this tower out of Lego.

Can you see it? But three times its been knocked down, She knocked it down herself, by accident.

And then I accidentally knocked it down and then the cat knocked it down.

And each time she had to start again.

But she didn't give up.

She's been really determined and this is what she's done.

Being determined is a good characteristic.

We find it in the character in our story, in this unit.

"The Little Red Hen".

This is unit three, lesson two, Let's see what's on the agenda today.

So we're going to start with a warm up today.

And Panda and I we're going to teach you these song of The Little Red Hen with some actions.

And it's a really brilliant way of learning this story.

After that, we're going to put the story into a story map.

And that's the big challenge of this lesson because it's a bigger story than the ones that we've used so far.

Later in the session then.

Not now, but later we will need a piece of plain paper and a pencil to draw with.

Okay, let's learn the actions to the song.

So the first thing is to learn some of the actions in the song.

So, for The Little Red Hen should we do this.

So, it's going to go ♪ Once there was ♪ ♪ A Little Red Hen ♪ ♪ A Little Red Hen ♪ ♪ A Little Red Hen ♪ ♪ Once there was ♪ ♪ A Little Red Hen ♪ ♪ Who wanted to bake bread ♪ And we'll do that for bread, shall we? And imagine that we're eating some bread.

Well.

Three animals.

They all say they won't help.

There's the cow, "Not I." Can we do that for Cow? "Not I," said the cow.

"Not I," said the dog.

Can you make yourself look and sound like a dog? It's fun.

"Not I".

And a mouse, imagine you've got whiskers, "Not I" Let's do it together.

"Not I," said the cow.

"Not I," said the dog.

"Not I," said the mouse.

Very good.

The other actions are for sowing the seeds.

So we'll imagine we've got some seeds and we'll throw them like that.

We're imagining we're putting them out in the field into trenches, long trenches.

Which will be filled with soil and then the seeds would grow.

So we'll sow the seeds like this.

We need to chop the wheat.

So we'll use one arm as the wheat and then we'll imagine we're chopping the wheat like that.

We've got to grind the grain.

Taking the little bits of grain and grinding them.

In olden days it would've been between two stones to turn into flour.

The flour that we need to make bread.

So do that for grinding.

Then for baking the bread, we'll do that.

So if you can try and join in with the actions and even if you don't say "Not I." Have a go at being the cow, the dog and the mouse.

Okay.

Enjoy.

Let's do all those actions with the song.

She ate the whole loaf.

So how was that? ♪ Once there was ♪ ♪ A Little Red Hen ♪ Its a very jolly tune, isn't it? And if you joined in, thank you.

But if you didn't join in like Panda and just watched that's fine too.

Because sometimes we have to imagine ourselves doing something before we actually do it as well.

And by listening to the song we're starting to really get to know this story really well.

And that is what we're trying to do.

So the next thing we're going to take the story we've heard and the song we've heard and put them together into a story map.

Okay, let's move on to that.

So some of you may have drawn a story map before.

This is the hardest one that we've done so far.

Each one gets a little harder.

So how about first, you watch me draw the map and then I'll pause the video and then you can have a go at drawing it yourselves.

So the first thing is the story starts once upon a time there was A Little Red Hen.

So that's where I'm going to start.

The Little Red Hen.

Now the drawing only has to work for you remember so along as you can remember as Little Red Hen that's fine.

Now she lived on a farm in a farm house.

A hen house I should say.

So that's the hen house.

And she wants to make a loaf of bread.

So I want to draw an arrow to the next bit.

The first thing she had to do, do you remember she had to heave the sacks of seed out.

So, to remember that I want to draw a sack.

I'm just going to draw some little dots cause they remind me that they're seeds.

And she sows the seeds into the ground.

But she says first doesn't she, "who will help me do that?" And these three animals come round all the time.

So I'm going to put them in the middle of my map.

This is an unusual map.

So how about, "Not I," says the cow.

I'm just going to something that reminds me as cow.

"Not I," says the cow.

After that is the oh oh it's the dog, so dog.

Floppy ears.

Floppy eared dog.

It's not a very good dog.

But I can remember that's a dog and that's all that really matters.

Cow.

Dog.

Just drawing his face.

Cause I haven't got much room.

And the last one, cute little nose whiskers, was the mouse.

Cause he's so small he's actually got legs.

So we got the cow, the dog see if you can draw a better dog than me, bet you can.

Let me have a go.

Perfect.

So we put these in a box.

In the middle of my map.

Because my map only has to make sense to me.

So I know that's a cow, that's a dog and that's a mouse.

So not I, not I, not I.

Let's carry on.

After the sowing the seeds, fields of wheat grew.

And the hen says, "Who will help me chop the wheat?" So we'll draw a chopper.

That will remind me that the wheat is chopped.

"Not I," said the cow.

"Not I," said the dog "Not I," said the mouse.

Now this bit's quite tricky isn't it.

Who will help me grind? I did this action with my hand and I imagined two big round stones being rubbed together.

To break down all the grain and turn it into flour.

So by drawing two circles like that it helps me remember that the hen grinds the grain to make flour.

Now when we got the flour you're ready to do the final baking.

So I'm going to do a bowl for the baking.

That will remind me.

And then finally, the loaf is ready.

Let's see if I can read that from the beginning.

So here we go we'll start here.

Once upon a time there was a Little Red Hen who lived in a hen house on a farm.

Here's an arrow to the first bit.

First she goes to sow the seeds.

"Who will help me sow the seeds?" "Not I," said the cow.

"Not I," said the dog.

"Not I," said the mouse.

"Then I'll do it myself," she says.

And so she did.

Next.

When the wheat has grown she says, "Who will help me chop it?" "Not I," said the cow.

"Not I," said the dog.

"Not I," said the mouse.

"Very well I'll do it myself." And so she did.

When she's got all the grain from the wheat.

The little seeds, she has to grind them like that.

And between two stones.

"Who will help me grind it?" "Not I," said the cow.

"Not I," said the dog.

"Not I," said the mouse.

"Then I'll do it myself." And finally, the flour is ready for baking here.

"Who will help me bake it?" "Not I," said the cow.

"Not I," said the dog.

"Not I," said the mouse.

"I'll do it myself," she said.

"It's fun and it smell yum." And finally when the loaf is ready she says, "And who will help me eat it?" "I will," says the cow.

"I will," says the dog.

"I will," says the mouse.

"Well you didn't help me bake it," said the Little Red Hen.

"So I'll eat it all myself." And so she did.

So these simple pictures that I did there quite quickly, helped me remember the story.

So everybody draws in their own way.

So I'm going to pause the video now and if you want to pause it on that picture to help you, that might be a good idea.

Or maybe you can just do it from your imagination.

But when you've finished drawing your story map come back and we'll celebrate your work.

See you then.

But now, time to get to work.

So how was that? Were any bits of that map difficult to draw? Did you have to be really determined to get it right? Like Panda was with her Lego? I'm determined to draw a better dog, than I drew in that story map.

I still can tell it's a dog and that's all that matters to me but I'm getting better I think.

But I'm going to practise much more.

I'm determined to do a good one.

Well being determined is what The Little Red Hen was in that story.

She was determined to make that loaf of bread even without any help at all.

And we're going to be exploring character throughout this unit.

So what have we done today? We have learned the song, "The Little Red Hen".

With all the actions.

We'll sing it again in this unit.

And we'll add more.

And then we've put the story we've known from the telling and the song into a story map.

And my challenge to you now is to tell that story to somebody if you can from your map.

Tell them your favourite bits of that story.

And when we next meet again in the next lesson we're going to be exploring how to step the story with actions and we'll be focusing on character.

So until then, bye-bye.
