Hi there.

I'm Mrs Howley.

And this is Cedric.

He's really pleased to see you today.

Cedric you're right.

He's really excited because today we're going to help you become the storytellers of the Emperor's new clothes In today's lesson, we're going to step and speak the story.

We're going to start with the nursery rhyme.

Then we're going to step the story and then we're going to speak the story.

For today's lesson you will need a pencil and some paper, your brilliant brain and you might need a Teddy talk partner.

Pause the video now, if you need to collect any of those things and press play when you're ready.

Can you remember our nursery rhyme from lesson one? Don't worry if you can't.

It was ♪ Row, row, row, your boat ♪ ♪ Gently down the stream.

♪ But we're going to recycle that nursery rhyme for our Emperor's new clothes story.

Now, I wonder what can you remember about that story? The Emperor is very funny.

He's very foolish and a tailor who sews clothes tricks him.

I'm going to recycle our nursery rhyme, all about the tailor.

Are you ready? What's the actions this time? It goes like this.

♪ sew, sew, sew the clothes ♪ ♪ He wants something to wear ♪ ♪ Trick him with your clever plan.

♪ ♪ And sew them in thin air.

♪ Let's try the actions.

So, he's sewing.

sew, sew, sew, then we're saying he wants something to wear.

So is if you're putting on some clothes, trick him with your clever plan.

And sew them in thin air.

Let's try singing the actions.

♪ Sew, sew, sew the clothes ♪ ♪ He wants something to wear ♪ ♪ Trick him with your clever plan.

♪ ♪ And so them with thin air.

♪ Fantastic.

Let's try it one more time.

Maybe you could join in with the words, and the actions.

Let's try it.

♪ Sew, sew, sew the clothes ♪ ♪ He wants something to wear ♪ ♪ Trick him with your clever plan ♪ ♪ And sew them in then in thin air.

♪ Well done.

In lesson one, we created a map of the story of the Emperor's new clothes.

If you've got one, you might want to get it handy.

Now, before we start, I wonder what Cedric can remember about the the story.

Cedric Cedric, Cedric, Cedric, Cedric Oh, here he is.

I know you like the story, Cedric.

What do you like about the story of the Emperor's new clothes? He likes it when the Emperor walks out in front of all the crowds in his pants.

Ah, what do we know about the character, Cedric? He's foolish.

That's right.

He likes fancy clothes.

He does.

And he gets tricked by the tailor.

In this unit, we're going to think all about character.

We have got a song about character Cedric, that's right.

We're learning, now.

It goes like this.

♪ Character, how do we do it ♪ ♪ Character, how do we do it ♪ ♪ Character, how do we do it ♪ ♪ Let me show you how ♪ ♪ We show what they think.

♪ ♪ We show what they say.

♪ ♪ We show what they do.

♪ ♪ That's how we do it.

♪ That's right, Cedric.

So when we're writing about character or storytelling about character we tell the listener what the character thinks, feels and does.

Let's see if we can think about character, when we recap the story by talking the map.

So this pic at the start shows the Emperor.

He is very proud, that's right, Cedric, of his clothes.

He loves new clothes.

But then one day a stranger comes to visit the King.

Tells him he's a tailor and there's something special about the clothes he can make.

That was right, Cedric.

He tells him that the clothes he makes can only be seen by people that are really clever.

Foolish people can't see the clothes.

So he pays him some money and he tells him the clothes will be ready in one week.

The next day, the King sends his servant, that's right.

He sends his servant to go and check on the tailor.

The servant sees the tailor snipping and sewing in thin air.

Oh, no.

Thanks to servant.

I must be foolish.

He goes back to the King and he tells the King, "Your clothes look magnificent." How does the King feel then? Really excited, that's right.

Then the next day the King sends his minister to go and check on the tailor.

The minister sees the tailor snipping and sewing in thin air and thinks, Oh no, I must be foolish.

But he says to the King, "Your clothes look wonderful." How does the King feel then? So excited, Cedric, that's right.

So the King goes himself the next day.

But what does he see? He sees the tailor snipping and sewing in thin air.

Oh, no, how does the King feel now? He's so foolish.

He can't see the cloth.

"I can't tell anybody that," says the King.

The next day, the tailor brings him his new clothes and the King lets him dress him in his imaginary clothes until the King is standing in his pants.

What does the King do then? Ah, that's right.

He walks out in front of all the crowds in his pants feeling very proud of his new clothes.

But then someone in the crowd shouts out, a child shouts out.

"The King is in his pants." And everybody laughs.

I think the King feels really foolish then.

Now we've heard the story.

We've mapped the story.

We're going to step the story.

And all of these things will help us to be able to speak the story ourselves.

So when we step the story, we imagine that there are stepping stones across a river.

And with each step we take we're going into a different important part of the story.

You might have done this before but if you haven't, don't worry.

I'm going to have a go at mapping it now.

Cedric is so full of good advice.

Cedric said, "If I get stuck, when doing my stepping, I can use my map to help." Thank you Cedric.

So for each important part of the story, I'm going to create an action like this.

So the King loves his clothes.

Do you want to try that action action? Kind loves his clothes.

Step.

Tailor brings him clothes.

Then says you can only see them if you are clever.

Brilliant.

The next part of the story.

Let me look at my map.

Yes.

The King sends his servant to look what the tailor is doing.

Step.

The servant sees him sewing and snipping in thin air.

Oh no.

But he tells the King the clothes are wonderful.

Then he sends his minister, looks through the window.

He sees the tailor snipping and sewing in thin air.

Oh, no.

But he tells the King, the clothes are wonderful.

Then the King looks for himself and see the tailor snipping and sewing in thin air.

Oh, no.

Then the tailor brings him the clothes and pretends to button them up.

But the King is standing in his pants.

The King walks out into the crowd and everybody laughs.

Should we try those actions again? Join in with me.

Fantastic.

Why don't you have a go now at stepping the story with your own actions? Yes Cedric, don't forget you can use your map to help.

Pause the video now, have a go at stepping, then press play when you're ready.

Now we've heard the story.

We've mapped the story.

We've stepped the story.

You're ready to speak the story.

Remember, this is your version.

You can use your words, but what can we use to help us? Our story map.

That's right, Cedric.

What else can we use to help us remember the story? Our stepping actions.

That's right.

You might also want to think about the character while you're telling the story.

I'm going to do that now.

While I tell the start of the story, I'm going to get my magic story hat because it helps me when I'm telling the story.

Once upon a time there was an Emperor.

He was very proud of his fancy clothes.

He loved buying new clothes.

He used to spend and spend and spend on new clothes all the time.

That's right.

Then a stranger visited the King.

"I'm a tailor." he said, "and I can make you the finest clothes, but these clothes are special." Can you remember how these clothes were special? That's right.

He told the King, they could only be seen by people who are very clever and they couldn't be seen by people that were foolish.

Well, the King liked the sound of that.

He was very excited and he offered to pay the tailor a big bag of gold.

"Your clothes will be ready in a week," said the tailor.

How did I get on? I told the first part of the story and I used my map and I used my actions to help me remember.

Now, it's your turn.

Could you retell the whole story using your map and your actions to help? Have a go.

Try speaking the story.

Pause the video now, then press play when you're ready.

How did you get on? Was it easy? Was it hard? Was it fun? What do you think Cedric? How was your storytelling? Cedric said it was fun but he kept forgetting the end of the story.

Don't worry Cedric, we'll keep practising.

I wonder if before lessons three, you could practise telling the story to your Teddy top partner or to someone at home.

We'd love that.

I hope you enjoyed being a storyteller today.

We can't wait to see you for the next lesson of this unit.

We'll see you soon.
