Hello everyone, my name is Miss Barron.

And welcome to lesson five in our instructions unit.

In today's lesson, we are going to do some reading.

And we are going to learn to summarise what we have read.

Now summarise might be a new word.

So let's just practise saying it together.

Ready? My turn, your turn.

My turn, summarise, your turn.

Brilliant.

Again, summarise, your turn.

Fantastic.

Now to summarise just means, to pick out the main points in what we read.

And it's a really useful reading skill.

Because sometimes we have quite a lot to read.

And so we need to learn how to pick out the main points quickly, to help us understand what we read.

So in today's lesson, we are first going to begin with a spelling activity.

Then we are going to do our strategy check.

We're going to read together and practise summarising together.

And then you are going to have a go at practising summarising skills on your own.

So in today's lesson, you will need something to write on, a piece of paper or your exercise book, a pen or pencil to write with.

And if you can download the reading extract and print it off.

So pause the video now and go and get those things if you need to.

Amazing job, you are back with everything you need to start the learning today.

Now don't worry.

If you can't download it, print the reading extract.

You can just read along on the screen.

So let's begin with our spelling activity, shall we? In this unit, we are learning how to make nouns plural.

Now let's just remind ourselves what a noun is.

A noun, is a naming word.

And it names, a person, place or thing.

Go on tell me what it names.

Say it names.

Fantastic.

It names a person, place or thing.

Fantastic.

And we are looking at how we can make nouns plural, which means that we have more than one of them.

So in lesson three, we learnt that if a noun ends in the letter S with the sound s, the letters S S the sound s or the letter X the sound x, then we need to add es to make the word plural.

Don't we? So for example, Bus ends in S.

we have to add es to make it plural, and it becomes buses.

Let's have a look at class.

Class ends in ss, S S.

To make it plural, we have to add es and it becomes classes.

And then let's have a look at fox.

Fox ends in X, the sound x.

We have to add es to make it plural.

Don't we? And it becomes foxes.

So let's have a look at some more words.

Now, I would like you to look carefully at the words in the purple table now.

What do you notice about these words? What's happening here? See if you can work out the rule.

Pause the video and have a go at that.

How did you get on? Did you manage to work out the rule? Go on, tell me your screen now.

Say the rule is, tell me your screen.

Fantastic efforts.

Now, I think you've spotted it.

The rule is the same.

Isn't it? That we have to add es to these words.

Now, why is that? What's going on here with these words? Let's have a look, shall we? Well, again, if nouns end in, the letters S H, which makes the sound sh, the letters C H making a sound ch, or the letter Z making the sound z.

Then again, we have to add es to make them plural.

So let's have a look at that with these words.

Wish, wish ends in S H, doesn't it? Sh So to make it plural, so that we have more than one wish we have to add es, and it becomes wishes.

Let's have a look at the word match.

Match ends in C H the sound ch.

To make it plural so that we have more than one match.

We have to add e s and it becomes matches.

And let's have a look at a word ending in Z, waltz.

Now waltz is a type of dance.

So waltz ends in the letter Z the sound z.

And to make it plural, we have to add e s and it becomes waltzes.

So we have learned that F nouns and in these letters.

Listen to the letters and the sounds.

S s, S S s, S H sh, C H ch, X x and Z z, then we have to add e s to the word to make it plural.

So well done with your spellings today.

It's a tricky rule to remember.

But one that's really useful, because plural nouns come up all of the time.

And I'm sure that we are going to be writing some of them, when we come to write our set of instructions in this unit.

Now let's get onto our reading.

The first thing that we know that we need to do before we read is our strategy check.

This is going to help us be amazing readers.

So what do we do? If we come across a word that's difficult to read, I think you know by now.

Say it with me, we look at the letters, make the sounds and blend them together.

What do we do? We look at the letters, make the sounds and blend them together.

Fantastic.

Now, if it's a tricky word or a sight word, we can't sound it out.

Can we? So we see it, we say it.

We see it, we say it, fantastic.

We also need to get our reading fingers ready.

Our reading fingers are going to go under the words so that we can follow along as we read.

And if we don't understand something, we're going to go back and reread it.

Aren't we? What are we going to do? Well done.

We're going to go back and reread it.

So those strategies help us to read the words correctly.

Now let's think about our key reading skill, which is summary.

So today we are learning how to summarise.

Aren't we? To summarise.

Now to summarise means, to decide what is important in our reading so that we can pick out the main points.

The most important points.

And then we're going to put them in our own words.

And the reason we do that, is because if we put them in our own words, then it helps us to understand what they are much better.

So today we are going to read a section of text at a time, and pick out the main ideas.

We're going to put them into our own words, and we're going to use these sentence stems. So this part is about, I want you say that now.

This part is about, your turn.

Brilliant.

And this sentence then.

My turn first, the main points are, your turn now.

Fantastic.

You are working really hard today.

So those are the key things.

Those are our strategies that we are going to use today to help us to summarise.

Now, we know that we are learning all about instructions and instructions tell us three main things.

Don't they? They tell us what it is that we're doing.

They tell us why we should do it.

And they tell us how we do it.

So we are going to be looking for those three key points, when we come to summarise our reading texts today.

Now, remember if you have printed the downloadable reading extract, get it now.

We're about to start reading.

But before we do, let's just go over some key words, that we are going to find in the text today.

So it's going to be my turn, your turn.

Get ready.

You're in the zone.

Brilliant.

My turn first.

Favourite, your turn.

Again favourite, your turn.

My favourite to flavour ice cream is strawberry.

The next word is shapeshift.

My turn, shapeshift, your turn.

Fantastic.

Again, shapeshift, Your turn.

Brilliant now to shapeshift means, to be able to change shape so that we can become any creature or any thing that we want.

Now, the next word is superhuman.

My turn, superhuman, your turn.

Brilliant! Again.

Superhuman, your turn.

Fantastic.

So if we're superhuman, it means that we have special powers, which make us more than just human.

Now the next word is cauldron.

My turn, cauldron, your turn.

My turn again, cauldron, your turn.

Fantastic.

And there's a picture of a cauldron.

So in a sentence that might be, the witch boiled rats in her cauldron.

And that last word, chilies.

My turn, chilies, your turn.

Fantastic.

Again, chilies, your turn.

And there is a picture of some chilies.

Now we add to chilies to our food.

To make our food hot and spicy.

Now let's think about our tricky words.

These are our tricky words that we are going to meet in our text today.

So again, my turn, your turn.

Through, your turn.

Through, your turn.

Brilliant.

I crawled through the tunnel.

Next word.

Anything.

My turn, anything, your turn, again, anything, your turn.

Is there anything left in the fridge? Next word, only.

Only, your turn.

Again only, your turn Brilliant.

I only want to go to the park today.

Next word.

Anyone.

My turn, anyone.

Your turn.

Fantastic.

Anyone, your turn.

Oh, I don't know anyone who knows how to make a magic pair of socks.

Okay.

So let's begin reading.

I'll set of instructions.

Reading finger under the first word.

It should be under the word how.

Fantastic.

So read with me.

Let's go.

How to make magic oh I don't know this word.

What could I do to help me? I can look at the letters, make the sounds and blend them together.

Let's go do that with me.

S-o-c-k-s, socks.

How to make magic socks.

Hello.

My name is Sydney, oh now, this is a long word.

I don't know it.

I can break it down into three parts, can't I? So let's take the first part or just read this word.

S-o-c-k, sock a, next part sound out that with me.

L-o-t, lot.

Sock-a-lot.

Hello.

My name is Sydney Sock-a-lot and I love socks.

I love making big socks and small socks, oh I don't know this word.

Sound just out with me.

Ready? F-l-u-f-f-y.

Fluffy.

I love making big socks and small socks, fluffy socks and smelly socks, stripey socks.

And, oh I don't know this word.

What can I do? Look at the letters make the sounds, blend them together.

Let's do it, ready? B-r-i-g-h-t.

Bright.

I love making big socks and small socks, fluffy socks, and smelly socks, stripey socks, and bright socks.

The very best socks to make are magic socks.

When you put them on, they give you any superpower you want.

They can make you fly.

They can give you superhuman strength.

Superhuman, that was one of our key words.

Wasn't it? They can give you superhuman strength and they can make you shapeshift, which means you can change into anything you want.

Shapeshift, that was another one of our key words.

Today, I am going to tell you how to make them.

So let's have a go at summarising that part that we've just read.

Now remember, instructions tell us three main things.

They tell us what it is we're doing, why you should do it and how you do it.

So what does that part tell us? Which of those three things does that part tell us about, maybe it tells us about more than one of those three things.

I would like you to go back to the text now and reread that section that we've just read and have a think about what that part is about.

Get ready to tell me your sentence, with this sentence stem.

Then this part is about mmh.

And I said extra challenge.

See if you can work out what the main points are.

Now to help you do that, you might want to have a look for what you think are the most important words in that section.

And you could circle those or underline them.

So go back to the texts now, see if you can work out what that part is about, is it about what it is? Why you should do it? Or how you do it? Maybe it's about more than one of those and what you think the main points are.

So pause the video and have it go at that.

Fantastic effort.

Let's see how you got on.

Now this is quite a tricky skill.

So I'm really impressed that you're having a go.

So this part is about what it is, what it is we're doing? We're making magic socks.

Aren't we, and why we should do it.

What did it say in the text? Why should we make magic socks? Go on tell me to your screen now.

We should make magic socks because tell me.

You're right.

Well, spotted in the text.

We should make magic socks because they give us any superpower we want.

So those are the main points, of that part of text.

The main points are, we find out how to make magic socks and that those other best socks, because they give us any superpower we want.

Can you remember what three super powers it said we could have in the text? Do you remember? It gave us three examples of super powers.

Didn't it? Can you remember what they are? Have it go, tell me your screen now.

Say they are, brilliant job.

Again well spotted in the text.

They are the power to fly, super human strength, and the power to shapeshift.

Which means that we can change shape into anything that we want.

So it gave those three examples of superpowers that we might have with our magic socks.

Fantastic.

Now let's carry on reading, reading things under the first word, brilliant.

It should be into the word to you.

Let's go read with me.

You will need the, don't know this word.

Sounds out with me.

Ready? N-a-i-l, nail.

Well done.

The nail of a witch.

Oh, I don't know this word.

Help me out.

Let's look at the letters, make the sounds, blend them together.

Ready? B-o-i-l-e-d.

Boiled.

Does that sound right? It doesn't.

Does it? Now it's not boiled, even though it looks that way, it's boiled and that's because it's a verb in the past tense.

So that ed ending that you see makes the /d/ sound in boiled, boiled.

The nail of a witch boiled in a cauldron.

One of our key words.

The nail of a witch boiled in a cold drink with chilies and limes.

The ear wax of a mountain troll taken while he is, Oh, this is a long word.

I don't know.

It let's sound it out together.

S-l-e-e-p-i-n-g, sleeping.

Well done.

The ear wax of a mountain troll taken while he is sleeping.

And finally an empty jar of, oh I don't know this word either.

Sound it out with me, ready? P-e-a-n-u-t, peanut.

An empty jar of peanut butter.

I love peanut butter.

I have it on toast with breakfast.

Do you like peanut butter? So let's have a go at summarising that section of text.

Have a think.

What is that part about? Is it about what it is? Why you should do it or how you do it? So I'd like you to go back and reread the text and decide what that part is about.

And then it's an extra challenge.

If you could sum up each sentence in just one word, what word would you choose? So which do you think is the most important words in each of those sentences? Pause the video now, go back to the text and have a go at answering those questions.

Okay.

Let's see how you got on.

So go and then tell me first.

What do you think that part is about? Is it about what it is? Why you should do it or how you do it? Go on tell me to your screen now.

Say, this part is about mm.

Tell me now.

Fantastic.

Well done.

I'm so impressed.

This part is about how we do it.

Isn't it? It tells us what we need.

Which is part of finding out how we make the magic socks.

I'm going to tell you now, which words I think are the most important in each sentence.

And I'll tell you why.

So in the first sentence, the most important word is nail.

Why? Because that is what we need.

In the second sentence, it's wax or I will let you have ear wax.

Because again, that is what we need.

And then the third sentence, jar.

Again, what we really need is a jar.

So if I was going to sum up each of those sentences in just one word, those are the words I would choose.

Let's carry on reading.

Shall we? Reading finger under the first word we're going to read.

Brilliant, it should be under the word, what.

Let's go.

First, walk through the, oh I don't know this word.

Let's sound it out together.

F-o-r-e-s-t.

Forest.

First, walk through the forest where the wicked witch lives.

Stop outside a house with green smoke coming out of the chimney.

Sneak in and take a nail from her bedside table.

Boil it in the cauldron with chilies and limes.

Then leave as fast as you can.

So again, let's have a go at summarising this part.

So I'd like you to think, what this part is about.

Is it's about what it is, why we should do it or how we do it? So have a thinking, get ready to answer it.

Using your sentence stem.

This part is about mmh, and then I would like you to circle or underline the most important words.

So get ready to tell me the most important words are, mmh.

Pause the video now and have a go at that.

Okay.

Brilliant effort.

I'm really impressed with your hard work today.

Let's see how you got on.

Now, this part is about how to do it.

Isn't it? Again, it's how to do it.

Because it's giving us those step by step instructions about how we make these magic socks.

And the most important words.

I wonder what you underlined or circled.

These were the most important words that I picked out.

First of all, forest, because it tells me where I need to go.

Then wicked witch, I know that I need to go to the forest where the wicked witch lives, that's important.

The next important words were, green smoke.

They again, tell me where I need to be.

I need to be at the house with the green smoke coming out of a chimney.

The next important words were bedside table.

Again, that tells me where I'm going to find the nail.

And finally, the important words in the last or second to last sentence, are boil it in the cauldron with chilies and limes.

I need to know that.

I need to know that I need to boil the nail in the cauldron with chilies and limes.

So those are the most important words, in that piece of text.

And if I was going to sum up that whole text there in just one sentence, I would say, take a nail from the bedside table of the wicked witch.

So if I was to put all of that most, all of that information together, then in just one sentence, the most important point is to take a nail from the bedside table of the wicked witch.

Let's carry on reading.

Put your reading finger under the first word.

It should be under the word what, well done.

Let's go read with me.

What do you do? Oh, I don't know this word.

What can I do? I can look at the letters, make the sounds and blend them together.

Do that with me.

Ready? T-r-e-k, trek.

Now to trek means to walk or hike, usually long distances, upper mountain.

Trek up the mountain with a, oh, this is a long word.

I don't know it.

Let's break it down into two parts.

Let sound out the first part together.

Ready? B-a-c-k, back.

Second part p-a-c-k, pack, Backpack.

A backpack is a bag I put some money back, which I can carry things in.

Trek up the mountain with a backpack and a spoon.

You will know when you reach a mountain troll's cave because it will smell strongly of cheese.

Stand outside the cave and sing to it.

This will put it to sleep.

Then, oh I don't know this word.

Sound it out with me.

Ready? S-n-e-a-k, sneak.

To sneak means to creep up on someone so that they don't know you're there.

Then sneak in and use your spoon to, oh sound out this word with me.

Ready? S-c-o-o-p, scoop.

Then sneak in and use your spoon to scoop out it's air wax.

Put it in your backpack and run away.

Let's have a go at summarising that piece of text, shall we? So what do you think that part is about? Does it tell you what it is? Why you should do it or how you do it? And what do you think the most important words are? So you can point to them on the screen or circle them or underline them on your piece of text.

If you have managed to print it out.

So pause the video now and have a go at that.

Okay.

Let's see how you got on.

So this part again is about how to do it.

These are a step by step instructions for how to make magic socks.

Now, what did you think the most important words were? I think the most important words of these, backpack.

Because that tells us what we need to take with us.

Spoon, again that tells us what we need to take with us.

Cheese, that word tells me which cave I need to go to.

It's the one that smells of cheese.

Sing, that tells me what I need to do, to send it to sleep.

And that was the next word.

Then use your spoon to scoop out its ear wax.

So that tells me how I'm going to get hold of it's ear wax.

So those are the most important words.

And if I was going to sum it up in one sentence, I would say, sing it to sleep and scoop out its ear wax with your spoon.

So that's how I would sum up the main points there in one sentence.

Now, then I'm going to read the last part of our set of instructions to you.

What you need to do.

After that mix it all together in an empty peanut butter jar.

Stir it without stopping for five minutes.

A last reminder.

The magic socks will suddenly appear on your feet.

They will make you look fantastic.

And when you wear them, you will feel like you can do anything.

So the last thing that I would like you to do today is to have a go at summarising that passage that I just read to you.

And I'd like you to think about three key things.

What that part is about, what you think the most important words are and what you think the main points are.

So you can use your sentence stems in the blue box to help you.

This part is about mmh, the most important words are mmh, and that you can either point to them on the screen or you can circle or underline them if you've been able to print out the extract today.

And finally, once you've decided on the most important words, those will help you work out the main points.

The main points are mmh.

So I'm going to leave you with that today.

I'd like you to have a go at that on your own now.

And I will see you in lesson six, when we are going to take our instructions for how to make a magic hat and recycle them.

We're going to change them to make something else that's magic.

So pause the video, have a go at summarising that last piece of text.

And I will see you in lesson six.

Bye.
