I'm Mrs. Howley.

And I'm really pleased to be here with you for this lesson.

This lesson is particularly exciting because you get to be the storytellers.

But before we get to that, there's someone who wants to say hello.

Now, he is shy.

So you might have to say a very quiet hello at first to persuade him out of his shell.

Could you say a quiet, "Hello Cedric." Cedric said he's really pleased to be here today with you.

Cedric has been playing in the garden.

He likes to play in the garden in all weathers.

Tell me more about gardens, you say? I think Cedric wants to play the, tell me more game.

Have you played the, tell me more game before? Don't worry if you haven't, it's very simple.

I say a sentence and then Cedric says, "Tell me more about.

." Something in that sentence.

Shall we try it? So tell me more about gardens, you said? So I like sitting in the garden and watching butterflies.

Tell me more about butterflies, you say? I like butterflies because I like the way they dance.

Tell you more about dancing, you say? I like to dance because it makes me feel good all over.

Fantastic.

Why don't you have a try at playing, tell me more at home with someone or a teddy.

It's good fun and it gets your brain warmed up.

Let's get ready for today's learning.

In our lesson today, we will be learning to tell a story from memory.

We're going to start by learning a song, and then we're going to use the storytelling school's method of hear, map, step, speak to help us learn our story.

You will need an exercise book or some paper.

If you've got your story map from the previous lesson, fantastic.

If not, don't worry.

You'll need a pencil and you'll need your brilliant brain.

Pause the video now, so you can go and collect those things.

Fantastic.

So in our last lesson, we heard the story of the magic paintbrush.

Cedric's worried 'cause he can't remember much of the story.

Don't worry, Cedric, we're going to learn it today.

I wonder what you can remember about the story.

Yes, there is a magic paintbrush in it.

Yes, Cedric.

That's right.

What else can you remember? Maliyang.

Yes, he was the main character.

Yes, he loved to paint and draw.

That's right.

And what did he do with the magic paintbrush? He helped other people.

Absolutely right, Cedric.

You've remembered loads about the story.

We're going to learn a short song now that's going to help us think about the moods in the story.

In this unit of work, we're going to be learning lots of different ways, that brilliant storytellers, help people feel, what they want them to feel when they are telling or writing the story.

We're going to build a toolkit, the mood.

So when we sing this song, let's think about the mood we're showing.

So it goes like this.

I'll sing it first, you can join in with the echo.

Before we use our map to retell the story.

Now, this story is full of magic.

So I'm going to need to wear my magical hat to tell the story.

Are you ready? ♪ It's story time ♪ ♪ It's story time ♪ ♪ Look listen ♪ ♪ Wow ♪ ♪ It's story time ♪ ♪ It's story time ♪ ♪ Look listen ♪ ♪ Wow ♪ Once upon a time there lived a young man called Maliyang.

He was a kind man.

He was a poor man and he worked hard every day in the fields.

He loved to paint and draw and you'd find him drawing everywhere.

Then one night something mysterious happened.

Maliyang, had a dream.

Can you remember what he dreamt of? That's right.

He dreamt of a magic paintbrush.

That an old man gave him and told him he had to help other people with it.

The next morning, what was there lying on his desk? That's right.

A magic paintbrush.

Whatever he drew.

That's right, it came to life.

From that moment on, Maliyang decided that he would use the paintbrush to help other people.

When they had no water in the field, what did Maliyang do? He used the magic paintbrush to draw a beautiful river.

Wow.

When people were hungry, he drew big plates of delicious steaming food.

And when he saw that people needed a home and safety, what did he build them? Beautiful homes.

That's right.

Now, soon, everybody had heard about Maliyang and his magic paintbrush.

But a greedy king decided that.

That's right.

He wanted the magic paintbrush for himself.

"Throw that Maliyang into jail." And he sent his people to steal the magic paintbrush from Maliyang.

Poor Maliyang.

Now, the greedy king then gathered all of his friends and decided to show off his magic paintbrush.

Are you ready? What? Nothing's happening.

He was.

furious.

That's right.

Now, he summoned Maliyang and said, "I will free you if you draw me whatever I want.

I want all of the riches in the world.

So draw me a golden mountain, and then I can go and get that gold and be even richer." But Maliyang didn't know what to do.

He knew the greedy king was a bad man But then, he had an idea.

"Draw me a golden mountain." So Maliyang drew a great sea.

"That's not a golden mountain.

I want to go to golden mountain.

Draw me a golden mountain right now." So Maliyang did draw him a golden mountain, but far away across the sea.

So what did the greedy king ask Maliyang to draw him next? That's right.

A big ship.

So Maliyang sent the people off on their big ship, across the waters.

The greedy king and his people.

And when they got into the middle of the sea, what did Maliyang draw next? He drew a giant wave.

Wash.

which destroyed the ship and the greedy king and his people were never seen again.

Maliyang then lived a happy life, drawing for other people and helping them out.

Did you enjoy that story? I enjoyed telling it.

And today, you get to be the storytellers.

Now that we've heard the story again, we're ready to talk it through with our story map.

Now, the important thing to know about the story map is the pictures are just for you.

They don't have to be perfect pictures.

As long as you can talk through what happens in the story, using your pictures.

So for example, he is Maliyang, he loves painting and drawing, and he's a kind man.

Next, he was in bed asleep having a dream.

And what was he dreaming of? The magic paintbrush.

When he woke up, there was a magic paintbrush.

This shows that he then decided to be kind and help other people with the magic paintbrush.

This is the bit where he drew the river for the people in the field and the steaming plates of food and the houses.

And then this is the bed where the greedy king decides that he wants the paintbrush for himself.

So then he throws Maliyang in jail.

This is the bit where the paintbrush doesn't work for the greedy king.

So he gets very angry and then summons Maliyang.

Who then doesn't know what to do, that's why I've got that question mark above his head.

But then he has an.

idea.

And then this is the bit where instead of drawing the golden mountain, he draws a great sea.

Then he draws a golden mountain, but far away across the sea.

Then he draws a great big ship and the greedy king and his people get on the ship.

And then he draws the giant waves, which destroys the ship.

And then this is the part at the end where Maliyang is happy and helping other people.

So all you need to do is talk through your map like that.

Why don't you pause the video now and have ago at talking through your map to someone at home or one of your teddies.

Now we've heard the story and we've mapped the story and we've talked to our map.

We're ready to step the story.

Imagine, there is stepping stones across a river.

Each stone represents a key moment in the story.

As we step from stone to stone, we'll do an action, a movement or say a word that represents that part of the story.

Breaking it down like this really helps us to remember it.

Okay.

So I'm going to show you my steps and then you can have a go the second time.

So Maliyang is a kind man and he loves to draw.

He has a dream and it's mysterious.

He wakes up to the.

magic paintbrush.

He wants to use it to help other people.

He draws a river.

He draws them plates of food.

He draws some houses.

There's a greedy king, who sends Maliyang to jail.

He is furious.

Maliyang doesn't know what to do.

The king tells him to draw a golden mountain.

But Maliyang draws a great sea.

And he draws the golden mountain far away and he draws a big ship.

And my favourite bit.

Giant wave.

Great.

So we've heard the story, we've mapped the story, we've stepped the story.

Now it's time, to speak the story.

Cedric's looking forward to this bit.

Now, if I'm going to be the storyteller, I'm going to wear my magical hat.

The next morning, what did he find? Oh, I remember this from my stepping.

Wow.

A magic paintbrush.

And he decided to use it to help other people.

Absolutely right.

I'm going to use my map now to help me remember what he did to help the other people.

So I'm going to have a look at my map.

Oh, that's right.

First he drew a river and then he drew the steaming plates of food.

And then he drew the houses to keep them sheltered.

Fantastic.

Next we have the greedy king.

And he said, "I want that paintbrush." And he threw Maliyang in.

Remember ? Yep.

Yeah, we did that action for the stepping, didn't we? He threw Maliyang in jail.

Poor Maliyang.

And then he tried the paintbrush, but it didn't work.

So he was.

furious.

Brilliant furious face, Cedric.

Next he called Maliyang and said, "You need to draw me a magic.

." Not a magic, a golden mountain.

Thanks, Cedric.

A golden mountain.

But Maliyang didn't know what to do because he knew he wasn't a good man.

But then he had a.

idea.

So then he drew a.

I will do the action, Cedric.

He drew a great sea.

And then he drew the golden mountain far away across the sea.

And then he drew a.

That's right.

He drew a big ship for the greedy king and his people.

And then when he was in the middle of the sea.

Yeah, this is my favourite bit, Cedric.

He drew a great wave, wash, which destroyed the ship and the greedy king and his people were never seen again.

And then Maliyang lived a happy and a good life, helping other people.

Now, it's your turn to tell the story.

You can use your map to help you remember the story.

You can use your steps.

I've got an extra challenge for you though.

Do you think you could show the moods of the story by using your face and your voice, maybe to show how magical and amazing parts of the story are.

Or maybe to show how frightening and sad it is when Maliyang is thrown in jail.
