Hi, everyone.

Welcome to lesson one, unit one, What is Pulse? I'm Ms. Glover.

I'm going to be your music teacher for today.

Before we begin, can you tell me what your name is and maybe what your favourite song is so I can get to know you a little bit better? Fantastic.

I feel like I know you a little bit better already.

Now find somewhere comfortable where you are free from distractions and it's nice and quiet and then we're ready to begin.

I guess you are wanting to find out what you're going to be learning today.

Well, by the end of today's lesson you will be able to say, I can hear the pulse, I can move my body in time to the pulse, I can count how many beats, and I can describe what the pulse is.

In this lesson, you will need, your body, give us a wave, your voice, say hello, your brain check, it's still inside your head and a teddy or toy.

If you don't have a teddy or toy with you right now, pause the video to go and get one.

Now we're going to sing a song.

This is called the welcome everybody song.

It's words are really easy and I'm sure you can join in.

But first I'm going to sing it to you so that you can hear what it you sound like.

While I do that, I want you to listen very, very carefully to what you think my hands are doing.

Okay? Let's go.

Now it's your time to join in with the singing.

This time we're going to make sure we're singing it beautifully, but we're also clapping our hands to that steady beat.

This song is all about a bumblebee called Hickety Tickety.

Have you got a bumblebee called Hickety Tickety? I bet you have.

Can you get him out of your pocket and say, hello, Hickety Tickety? Hello, Hickety Tickety? Here's my Hickety Tickety.

He's a big bumblebee.

He's going to help you with your singing today.

And he would really, really like to know your name.

So this song is all about Hickety Tickety learning your name.

Hickety Tickety is going to sing to you and you're going to sing your name back to him.

I'll show you how it goes first.

Do you know the song called "Cross Buns"? I'm sure you do, but just in case, I'm going to go over the words and you're going to repeat them back to me.

♪ Hot cross buns ♪ ♪ Hot cross buns ♪ ♪ One a penny, two a penny ♪ ♪ Hot cross buns ♪ It's pretty easy, isn't it? Let's do it all the way through together.

Now we're going to keep the beat while we're singing Hot Cross Buns.

To do this, we're going to pretend we're rolling out the hot cross buns dough.

So have you got your rolling pin? Show me your rolling pin.

Let's go.

Now let's try again, this time, now our dough is nice and flat.

We're going to cut them out with cookie cutters.

I wonder how many hot cross buns we've made.

In a minute we're going to try counting them, but for now let's try putting our crosses on our hot cross buns.

Okay.

You can see we've made our hot cross buns on the screen now, we're going to put our crosses on them like this, cross, cross, cross, cross in time to the song.

Are you ready? Then let's go.

♪ Hot cross buns, hot cross buns ♪ ♪ One a penny, two a penny hot cross buns ♪ I hope they've all got nice cross on them.

While they're baking in the oven, we're going to have a go at clapping in time to the beat.

Are you ready? Let's go.

Hurry up hot cross buns.

Let's see if we sing our song a little bit faster, If they'll cook a little bit faster too.

While I do that, I want you to listen very carefully and count how many beats are in the song.

That's how many times I clap.

Is also how many buns we cut out with our cookie cutter.

It's really, really important to know how many hot cross buns we've made.

So count really carefully, I'm going to ask you after I finish, how many beats you think Hot Cross Buns had.

Let's double check by doing it one more time.

What is the pulse in music? Is it the heartbeat of the music or is it the instruments used to play the music? Well done.

It's the heartbeat of the music, you're right.

The last thing we're going to do today is we are going to listen to some music.

This music is by Henry Purcell and it's called Rondeau.

We're going to listen really, really carefully to what the beat is doing and we're going to see how many different ways we can move our body in time to the beat.

We might choose to pat our head, pat our nose, pat our shoulders, clap our hands, pat your lap.

There are so many different ways we can keep the beat and how many different ways you can do it.
